Arrival Story:
Well, I did indeed get my new little brindle girl! My friend, Dayle (from Sandy Paws Committee) and I went to Orlando to pick her up at the track in Sanford-Orlando on Friday (March 18). It was quite an experience and we got to see so many other beautiful hounds! I don't know who was more excited, me or Dayle! As you know, I have been waiting for her for over a year as we thought she would be retiring last year. Her racing name was JAMS America and I have named her Rica (the last four letters of America). I also call her Miss America and she is a beauty! She is a very dark brindle with some red, and she is so tiny and petite (weighs about 55 pounds). Her last race was on Tuesday (March 15) and she came in last because she got bumped pretty hard by another greyhound. She had some bruising on her rump and one of her front paws. The trainer, Cheryl, gave her Rimadyl and said she would have won that race had she not been bumped. Cheryl was also very scared when she saw Miss America get bumped. I think she knew I was waiting for her! When I first saw her, it was love at first sight and she just knew I was going to be her new Mom because she came up to me instantly and started giving me kisses. She has this cute little way of crinkling her face so it looks like she's smiling! She's so adorable! She did really good on the trip from Jacksonville to Louisville on Sunday. She and Toby and Aleya all seem to be getting along just fine. Even though I had a bed and area for her in the van, she chose to sleep next to Toby on his bed and he didn't seem to mind. We left Jacksonville around 8:45 a.m. on Sunday and pulled into my driveway at 8:45 p.m. Sunday night. We were all very tired. I let them go outside to potty in the back yard, and Rica likes the yard a lot. Then I brought them in the house and fed them. While I was unpacking the suitcase upstairs, Aleya and Toby came up with me and I turned around and there was Rica! I had not even had the chance to teach her the stairs! Boy is she smart! Also, she has not had one single accident in the house! Rica decided she wanted to sleep in bed with me and Aleya (and Aleya let her!), but I didn't get much sleep as it was kind of crowded. I have a Queen size bed, but think I will have to get a California King! What we won't do for our greyhounds! LOL Rica also absolutely loves toys as much as Aleya and she woke me up at 6:00 a.m. yesterday because she had a toy in bed with her and she was squeaking the heck out of it! What a darling she is! I couldn't get upset and just laughed. I have made sure that I give Aleya and Toby extra hugs and kisses so they don't feel slighted (I will continue to do so) and I think they are secure and content. Rica is a lot like Aleya in that she loves everybody and wants everybody to love her! It's just so amazing how quickly she has adapted and fit in. She truly feels she's home and she has already been cockroaching on the couch! We also got Aleya's brother, MacKenzie as he is retiring too. He's bigger than Aleya and a darker red, but he sure is a lover. While we were driving back to Jacksonville, he kept coming up to the front of the van and giving us kisses! While at the track, we also got to see one of the other JAMS greyhounds (JAMS Patricia) and she was just precious! She gave us kisses galore! She's only 2 years old and is racing in Grade A races and is quite a little racer. She's another brindle (kind of a lighter brindle than Rica but with more red) and has the cutest white streak down her nose, she's petite too although a little taller than my Rica.

Sadly, and with a very heavy heart, I had to send my Miss Rica to the Rainbow Bridge on July 18, 2014 due to balance and rear end issues. She was just 6 weeks shy of reaching the age of 14, and she lived longer than any of my other female greyhounds. I was blessed to have her in my life for 9-1/2 years. She was "greytly" loved, will be missed but never forgotten.
