It was a cloudy winter afternoon. I had lost track of how long I had been confined to this cold metal cage, surrounded by what seemed to be an infinite space of brethren seemingly in the same position as I. We were all lost and not a single one of us stopped dreaming of the day our claws could dig into the earth from the world we were so abruptly stripped from.
But on this particular day,(if one could even understand the meaning to define the word, seeing how the days and nights themselves adopt the idea of a perpetual madness in a place like this,)I had awakened with a new sense of purpose. Be it a change of the winds I sensed or a bit of bad digestion muddling up the mind, I knew today would be the day I could escape this place.
Or at least start devising a plan...
And then she walked by, a two-legged soft-skinned, (you could tell by the particular hides she had draped across her to help protect her body from the elements since she is unable to produce a thick coat naturally like myself.)
Her kind is not something I'm unfamiliar with, in fact quite the contrary if you could believe it. Most of them patrol around us helping to keep us alive in the daylight. We like to call them the Watchers. They feed us and look at us with longing eyes wishing they could help more than they already do, (I wonder where they go at night? Are they trapped here too?) But I have also heard talk about a particular two-legged soft-skinned known as the Vanishers. They don't come around as often as the Watchers, but when they do, when they walk by us with the sun still warm on their backs and scent of the grass on their feet, they will stop, look one of our kind in the eyes, and before you know it another one of us has found a way to be granted the gift of freedom once more.
I knew I had to grab her attention but I couldn't be rash. Her scent was strong from the moment the doors opened. But why weren't my companions as attentive as I? I watched her walk around and away but she never walked far enough to lose hope. Then finally she was right in front of me, of me! I stood tall on my two legs to try to mimic her stance and with as boisterous of a sound I could produce, I stared back into her eyes and made my best offer.
"Freedom," I thought! "Freedom at last!"
The Vanisher crouched down and from a pouch in her hide she pulled out some of her own food and fed me through the cold metal bars. Would we get caught? My concern for that was minimal at this point for my stomach could no longer take the food I had succumbed to eat in this place.
I looked into her eyes. Not at the level of a two-legged, but as an equal. Above her right eye was a scar much like mine and at that moment, I knew why we were drawn to each other. It would take everything we had but we could both break free for somehow I knew somewhere deep inside her was a prison of her own.
A promise was made that day with an honor I would die to defend.
The Vanisher has become my Guardian and I her Sentry and together we will explore what this world has to offer and stand for something greater than ourselves.
