Does Gender Really Matter??

Hey Pals! So mom and dad have been going back and forth on possibly adding another dog to the family. Not 100 percent sure yet but a lot of what we read says that if we do it should be the opposite gender as me.

What do you think pals? I know personality is probably the biggest issue. I know a lot of my pup friends have siblings they live with.

Mom went to petco today and seen a really cute Red heeler mix that was an adoption event. He was two years old and reminded mom of me but its really important that I am happy.

Lots of love,
Meeko

Male and male isnt so bad (but pecking order WILL be established)... but SSA(same sex aggression) is a VERY real thing with some females.

It can stay dormant for till they are a couple of years old... and then simply explode.. and there are few ways to deal with it..

Read up WELL... go in the forums here and post and ask for guidance... there is a wealth of experience...

Be SURE of the kind of dog you want. There are no guarentees but you can narrow the odds alot.

That said.. some folk have a house full of Furs and never have a problem. BUT it pays to do alot of research abd asking.

Flicka does fine with Lucas.. as 2 males they simply dont have a problem. They are both rescues so there was no history to work with. However.. Flicka does NOT do well with other males.... so.. once again.. ask.. read... post... BE prepared.

Thank you! I am thinking We would go with a female but most likely another herding breed mix. I will take a look at the forums too.

Thanks again!

Zaidie- Yes They are smart for choosing me. Mom wishes they would have gotten my sister too. She was black and white but looked a lot like me otherwise. Then we could have grown up together. Oh well wasn't meant to be. We think if its maeant to be we will know it.

Thanks for your comments :)
Love,
Meeks

We too were thinking along those lines once or twice, but it didn't work for a lot of reasons...
A long time ago, I did not get along with my doggy cousin at all, we fought, though we were 2 males, and less then 3 months old, even. OMD! It took almost 2 years of long visits before we wouldn't fight...and even now we are not fed together, or playing with edible toys, like chewies and such. We both seem to do resource guarding.
However I do seem to get long well with other dogs that visit in my yard, male and females; all neutered...

I think its a personality thing, and the pups need to be seen together to make a decision.

Ponder it well, and have fun dog so!

Do you go along to help them look for a dog? Maybe you could let them know which one you like. If it was our ma she'd probably go for the opposite sex.

make sure you are in on picking a brother or sister.
are you at ease with them do you want a older sibling or do you want to be the older brother. look at all sizes of dogs do your cats have a say in choosing if so have your meanest and friendly meet it . THEM IN CARRIERS it is very important that they get a say. i had a dog loose an eye because the cat i had at the time did not want that dog in the house.she liked all other dogs in the neighborhood.T

Thank you Xena! I appreciate your advise. I am thinking an older female sibling possibly. Definitely not rushing into anything as we want to make sure its best for all of us.

Love,
Meeko
