Arrival Story:
While finishing graduate school in Laramie, WY, I went to the pound looking for a kitten-friend for my cat. There weren't any kittens, and as I had walked all the way over there, I figured I'd just look at the dogs. I knew I couldn't have a dog yet, and I had been immune when I looked at the dogs the week before, so it seemed harmless enough! But there was Chase. He was the only dog not barking, and when he laid down and crossed his front paws, it was all over! I still fretted and thought about it and talked to my landlord and took all my friends to visit him for a week, but then he came home with ME.

Bio:
From fall of 2004 to fall of 2007, Chase did Pet Therapy at a local nursing home in connection with the RVSPCA. He was one of the most sympathetic dogs I've ever met! He was also very well-traveled: he was born and raised in WY, been to both oceans, walked on the Pacific Crest Trail AND the Appalachian Trail, and been to 14 states. **I had to let my Chase go on Monday, September 15. At almost 14, his growing collection of minor age-related issues had reached a critical mass. We went for one last walk at Green Hill Park, then on to the vet where my boy went to sleep with his head in my lap for the last time. I took him straight over to Mom and Dad's and we buried him beside Daisy.

I can't believe this: Mom is going to be on Jeopardy! It's just amazing; i watch the show every night, except for the years we didn't have a TV (missed all of Ken Jennings' run, unfortunately). It's too bad i can't go on, but the lack of thumbs has tripped me up again! One more example of how dogs are discriminated against.... i'll save that diatribe for another day.

ANYhoo, the Brain Bus came through Roanoke in October and Mom went to try out. She passed the general test and was invited back to take the 50-question test, and passed that too! So a man called her last week to tell her to come on the show. I think I'M just as nervous as she is! We've been discussing strategy for betting in Final Jeopardy-- that's always a tough call, depends on where everyone stands-- but i told her to listen to her cousin: just make sure she has more than twice as much as everyone else, and Final Jeopardy won't matter!

Gotta go; Mom needs some help filling out her questionnaire of anecdotal tidbits to discuss with Alex Trebek. She said if she doesn't embarrass herself she'll let me post the air date(s) in my diary, so stay tuned!

Hello fellow Roanoke Dogsters,

No RDOG meeting this weekend-- apparently only a handful of people chimed in to vote on the date. Let's get this thing rolling, folks!! We're now looking at the first weekend of February, and if you're able to attend, email Nate at najones2@vt.edu to let him know what day you would prefer (meeting time will most likely be around 1:30). We can't do this is if we don't pull together!

RDOG meeting had to be postponed until next weekend-- it sleeted and rained freezing rain ALL day yesterday. Stay tuned, dog park fans!
