Once upon a time there was a very young, very naive couple who wanted a puppy. They decided to give a home to a sweet-looking baby beagle, but they had no idea what they were getting themselves into. After the first night the couple were zombies. The puppy was very, very sick, and had kept them up all night with his hacking cough. The young couple was also very unprepared for the puppy's affinity for power cords and how much he liked to sneak into the bedroom and soil the carpet. After another few weeks the couple was completely drained....the puppy had gotten even sicker and had to go to the hospital. They wondered if they'd made a mistake and would soon be puppy-less....

The couple decided to hang on, even if it meant taking time off of work to take the puppy to the vet three days a week. They were fascinated by his beauty as his coat gradually deepened in color and his eyes slowly changed from green to hazel. They wanted so badly to have a dog in their lives, and they were falling in love with the little beagle. Despite all his health problems, he bounded around their apartment at full tilt, as though there was nothing wrong with him. Then he would nearly collapse in a coughing fit, reminding the couple how fragile his health really was.

Slowly, the puppy turned a corner. His health improved, he finally got his vaccinations, and the couple could take him places. He loved riding in the car and going to visit family. They were fascinated by how smart he was...he could learn a trick in just a few minutes! They were falling even deeper in love with him, and he made them laugh until they cried with his silly antics.

A year and some months later, the couple decided to make some major life changes: they got married and bought their first home. The puppy, who had already moved with the couple twice before with few problems, cheerfully investigated his own house and settled in without ever batting an eye. They were fascinated by how well-adjusted he was, and how far he'd progressed from when he'd first come to live with them. They began to realize their love for him was without limits...he was their happy release to many stressful days.

Fast forward to present day: Although the "puppy" is two now, he still acts like a true puppy. He is the couple's ultimate comic relief! When they arrive home from work each night he scrambles to greet them and bring them a toy, a token of his true affection. They are fascinated by his capacity to love, even though their lives and jobs are demanding. They are thankful every day that they didn't give up two years ago...for this couple, love is defined by the little doggy who never gave up on them.

Thank you, Basil, for showing us that love never fails.
