Mom sometimes forgets that I'm a working dog. Yesterday, I reminded her that it's important to acknowledge the work I do around the house. I'm a stay-at-home dog, but my job is just as important as Rethy's.
I am the main watcher in the house. Rethy thinks she is because she chases cats around our house even when she can't reach them. That is totally not necessary. The best watchers let the cats go all the way around the yard, just not into it. The cats know I'm there, believe me. They try to tease me the same way they tease Rethy--walking on the edge of the fence or standing on the other side. They say "neener, neener, neener". Rethy falls for it every time. I just look at them and say, silly kitties. As long as they don't get into my yard, I don't care. Believe me, I know where they are.
Another thing I watch for is people coming to our house. I used to bark but I don't need to do that. I found the best way to do that job is by wagging my tail and wiggling--greet them at the gate and invite them in. That way, I get petted and loved. When you bark, people don't know you're friendly. I prefer the pets and lovin'.
My other job is to amuse Rethy and teach her how to play right. We play with the ball and with her monkey. I taught her "keep away". You are supposed to let the other dog have the toy periodically. If you grab it and keep it between your paws, the other dog gives up and it's no fun. My job is to teach Rethy these things.
Then there is my sniffing job. I sniff Mom and Rethy when they come home to see where they have been and what they have been doing. They are often around other dogs. I get to meet the dogs by sniffing, mostly Mom. Her pant legs are full of dog smells--puppies and older dogs. I'd love to play with the puppies but sniffing is as close as I can get.
The best part of my sniffing job is cleaning up the floors and washing our dog dishes. Rethy often leaves little pieces of food in her bowl. They are teeny tiny, but that just isn't acceptable. Bowls have to be clean before the next meal. Also, Mom is sloppy. The kitchen floor needs cleaning frequently. Today she said, Belle, I need to teach you to pick up the dog hair, too. Silly humans, what in the world would I want with dog hair? I have plenty.
My favorite job is giving Mom affection. She calls me her "love muffin". Muffin? The first few times I thought that might mean I need to do my sniffing job, but no. For Mom, that just means I sit there or roll on my back and let her give me pets and scritches and pats. Maybe this is really my favorite job.
you are amazing Belle! Not only that, you have so much wisdom. I just learned a whole lot from you. I am like Rethy and fall for the neeners, too ;o) Jolanda doesn't she is more like you. But with all the other responsibilities, especially with the keep away, I am on one page with you :D
I don't quite get the non barking when someone comes in. It's in my blood and I consider it my job.
Jolanda could not care less.
I like your attitude and effort and devotion. Kudos, Jojo and sonja
When you bark peeps don't know if you're nice or not?
I always greet with barks! HI! I'M FRANK!
Then Mama lets me greet the worried looking people and they see I'm nice.
Hm. I'll have to think about that one, commit it to memory.
But I LOVE the sound of my own voice! BOLBOL!
I like your style! Sounds like a nice place at your house!
Yeah, I fall for the Neener-neener's too. Sigh. I wish I had you close for pointers in neener-neener situations.
