Hey pups, Momma's gonna take over my diary for a bit to update on Grammy! For the Book of Faces friends, this is exactly what Momma posted over there, so you don't have to read it again!
We went to the oncologist today. There was a LOT of information given today, so I'm going to try to explain it as best as I can.
Her cancer is at a Stage 3, which we expected. She has several different chemo options, but she's also eligible for a research study that uses a newer (controversial because it's so expensive) drug called Avastin. The doctor really wants her to have this drug, but insurance typically won't pay for it unless you need a second round of chemo. The doctor thinks a second round of chemo can be avoided if she takes the Avastin. It's VERY expensive (it starts at $10,000 a treatment, and she would have 22 rounds), so basically, unless she does the research study, it's not happening. I have a huge packet of info on the study, and my friend good old Nurse Mary is going to read it for me and then go over to my mom's to explain it to her. We all think she should do the study, and I think she's leaning towards it too.
She's still living at my sister's, but she's coming home this weekend. She was able to walk up and down the stairs today without any problem, so she's ready! Her incision is healing nicely, although the wound vac she has to wear is uncomfortable when the nurses remove it to clean it. She wanted to do away with it altogether, but the doctor told her it would heal 4 times faster with the vac on, and the faster the incision heals, the faster she can start chemo. The sooner she starts the chemo, the sooner she can be done with it.
As always, any and all prayers and well wishes are deeply appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think Avastin was available to be commonly used for this type of cancer, back in 2006...which is when I went through all that..., I too was in a study using zyotax, which wasn't till after the first 16 rounds of Taxol, and others.
Well, Again, big hugs of encouragement, licks to wipe away the worries, and woofs to send out our best wishes and prayers, to all of you and esp, your Grammy. ♥
We are with you, sending hugs and prayers.
No, MJF, the dogtor said it's a relatively new drug, and right now it's being used for breast cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer. The study is to help prove that the drug is effective for ovarian as well. He says preliminary studies have shown that women with ovarian cancer that use the drug live longer. So we want Grammy to have the drug!!
Thanks for all the prayers, pups. Keep em coming!
