Any dog park where he can safely run off leash and socialize.

extremely agile while retrieving, also he yodels when he approves of something I am doing for him.

Arrival Story:
Saw him as a puppy in a park in SF and he was soaked in urine and emaciated. Someone was with him, using a rope as a leash. He seemed stunned by the dog's condition and was very quiet. I said, "Your dog looks hungry." He didn't say anything. I asked the dog's name and he said, "Suga Brown." In a silent exchange, I handed him $20 and he gave me the dog. As we left the park, I looked back over my shoulder and he was still watching us. My hunch is that he had been detained and Dexter had been stuck in a crate for days. Dexter freaks out anytime he is expected to be caged...the veterinarian or boarding place has to ask me to assist...he becomes very distrustful and growls...won't let anyone near him in those situations that involve cages. Maybe he thinks they will take him away from where he last saw me and is fearful that he will lose track of me. Fortunately I have only had to board him a couple of times and he has not had to go to veterinarians much. Thankfully, now that he is getting older, we finally found a vet who is familiar with Carolina Dogs and he does well with her. They tend to be so healthy that they aren't seen by vets very often and, of course, they are a rare breed.

Bio:
Dexter travels extremely well...we have moved around a lot. He seems to regard himself as a body guard...the low-key, incognito type. He positions himself in view of me and of the door at all times and is very friendly but occasionally turns into a serious protector, smart enough to give warnings to whomever might pose a threat. He has never attacked anyone but I know he would if the situation called for it. He has amazing powers of discernment and good judgment. I wish I had had the time to train him as a search and rescue dog...I think he would have enjoyed it and been good at it. He is scent driven and loves to retrieve and explore and be of service...highly competitive with himself when retrieving...it's not a game to him. To him, it is important to do it a certain way each time and very fast. He is thoughtful about how he grabs the toy and how he places it in front of me for more...he seems to imagine that he is really hunting. He tries to jump up trees to catch squirrels and tries to hunt birds, chipmunks, small animals (has sparred with a couple of skunks and their spray does not stop him). His temperament is even-keel and he knows the difference between wild animal prey and domestic small animals that should be treated like family. The cats love him and rub up against him a lot. He loves to run at top speed...the only dog that he couldn't out-run was a greyhound.
