Reverse Sneezing

I gave my family a big scare ...

Last Friday, in the early morning of the hours (three in the morning to be exact), I suddenly awaken in a spasm, stood up on all fours, bulged eyes, chest expanded, extended my head and neck, grasping for air I produced loud snorts and gagging sounds as I rapidly attempted to force long inspirations through my tiny nares-for two minutes.

Repeat again of above episode in the early morning of the hours on Saturday, twice.

Repeat again of above episode during my midday nap on Saturday.

No episodes on Sunday night.

Worried Mommy-of course, made me go visit my Vet first thing Monday.

It turns out, nothing to worry ... brachycephalic dogs (a.k.a flat faces, such as ME-the Frenchie) with elongated soft palates occasionally suck my elongated palate into my throat while inhaling, causing reverse sneezing. Although it is very disturbing to witness a reverse sneeze that mimics a suffocation episode, reverse sneezing itself rarely requires treatment.

On a disturbing/rude note, my Vet told Mommy "Zoe is CHUBBY". Rude!!! I tip the scale at a mere 21 pounds (net gain of 2 pounds from my previous Vet visit). My Vet told Mommy she would ideally like to see me weigh on average 17-19 pounds. Rude!!! I would be all bones and no meat at that weight!!!

Glad this was nothing serious but your Mom must have been frantic. Mine would have had a fit herself. Vets are forever telling the peeps that we need to lose weight. They are mean and rude I think you look marvelous.

I am glad to hear that your snorting was not a huge trouble...but my growlmy would have freaked out, too!
What is it with these dogtor peeps telling us to lose some poundage? Last time I was there they said I was too heavy, too! Imagine! Sometimes growlmy can see my that being overweight?
If you are, You do carry it well, and you look wonderfur!

I get those and they're not fun!!

Mom pinches my nose shut to make me
breathe through my mouth for several
seconds. That usually does the trick.

Well, I don't mean she pinches me hard.
She just holds my nose shut to force me
to breathe through my mouth. It calms me
down too.

My BFF Finley does that some. Pinching the nose makes the reverse sneezing stop, but I don't know how that would work on a Frenchie like you.

Happy your scare was just that - nothing serious! Does the Vet have any extra weight on them? Next time make a comment they could stand to lose a pound or two! It's hard! Your Mom will take care of you - as always!

I sometimes sneeze like this too Zoe and I have a regular face! My dads even say the German Shepherd they once had sneezed like that too during the spingtime!
