Arrival Story:
Wagger was a 'birthday gift' from my father at age 11 (1991). In all reality, he had gone off to the Rome NY Pound to see if they had found a lost cat of ours, Tigger, and came home with Wagger instead. Her papers said she was a Beagle / Coonhound mix, but in reality, she was a Beagle/Lab/Shepherd mix. Our mom, as anti-animal as she was, didn't want Wagger, and she was forced to be an outdoors dog on a tie-out with little-to-no affection or training from us (my mom had an irrational fear of flea infestation from the dog), as we were prevented from playing with her. Being a Beagle/Lab mix, she ran away every chance she got. This caused her to get hit by cars 3 times during the course of her 15 year life. The last time was a miracle. It was January and my sister let her out on accident- and she bolted across the front lawn at top speed, threw 2 feet of fresh snow, mind you.. And a poor woman on the way to work, hit her head-on at 45 MPH! ... did this slow Wagger down? Only for a second! As soon as she was clear to get up, Wagger started running down the road, only stopping for a few seconds to actually bark at the woman who had hit her, like "HEY! Watch where you're going!", before running back off!!! The woman came back a few minutes later and informed us she had the dog, but once Wagger saw it wasn't us in the car, she jumped right back out the woman's window! We found her only 5 minutes later, got her to the vet, and found out she merely had some light bruising.. talk about incredible! Wagger is no longer with us.. She passed away 10/31/06, poisoned to death purposely by my own mother. ...she will be missed.
