Arrival Story:
This is my 4th foster dog, I just picked him up on Christmas Eve. His story is something about living in a drug house, his owners were evicted and were going to have to put him to sleep so the neighbors took him in. The neighbors said they've known the dog for a couple of years and he's a good dog, but they already have 4 dogs so they called the rescue group to take him. The neighbors have been caring for him for a couple of weeks now, I guess. When I asked for his name they said, "Fritty." I said, "Fritty?? Is that short for something?" They said, "Or you can call him "Fritz" or "Fred." Poor guy, I'm not sure he hears his name either way because I've had a hard time getting his attention. He also seems to be losing his vision. He's a sweet, happy dog, though. I think he's going to need a full shave-down like Tigger had. I can't even tell you how dirty, smelly, and clumpy this dog is. I had to change the water twice when I bathed him and I still don't feel like he's clean. Ugh. 12/25/04: I've discovered that "Freddy's" front paws both have a nail that's grown so long it has curled back around into his paw. That would probably be why he didn't want me touching them to wash him. I've also been trying to clip away some fur around his ears because they're so clumped with dirt and wax, that could be part of the reason he can't hear very well.

Bio:
12/28/04: I'm trying to transition "Fritty" to respond instead to "Frankie." I think it suits him better now that he has a new look. (He was shaved / groomed yesterday.) The groomer pointed out that his bum looks raw, which is probably why he didn't want me washing him there, either. (He had diarrhea the first two days he was with me.) Since Frankie is now clean, I left the door to his kennel open last night in case he wanted to come up on the bed. He stayed in his kennel until about half an hour before it was time to get up and then he jumped up on the bed and he seemed cold so I covered him with the blankets and he laid there patiently waiting for me to wake up. 1/12/05: I think Frankie's vision is fine, actually, but I still think his hearing isn't very good (or he's just ignoring me). When I give a little whistle, he responds, but I can call his name all day and I don't think he hears me (when we're outside or if he's a ways away). Frankie HATES his kennel now. He whines if he has to be in there for more than a couple seconds. I'm not sure what changed. I guess he experienced the freedom of not having to sleep in it and decided he'd prefer never to be confined again. It's frustrating because I have to keep him locked up somewhere during the day to separate him from the cats (just to be safe) and to keep him from getting into the litterbox (which he did twice, gross). But, other than the crate issue, he's a GREAT dog and he's got good energy for a 10 year old. He's pretty content to just do his own thing and he's fine with my dog and cats (the cats tend to bat him in the face sometimes, though). He's a sweet little old man just looking for his final home. 2/1/05: I put a dark sheet over Frankie's crate yesterday and today and it seems to have helped A LOT. He whines a little at first, but it dies down more quickly and I think he rests better during the day. I wish I'd have thought of the sheet sooner. 2/28/05: I noticed Frankie limping yesterday so I took him to the vet today and he thinks Frankie has a torn cruciate ligament that will need surgery. I let the rescue group know and they want me to take him to an orthopedic vet tomorrow for a second opinion. 3/2/05: Apparently Frankie just has a broken toe. The vet put a splint on it and sent him home. I've been giving him some medicine for the pain but he's getting around great. The sheet over the crate only lasted so long and now Frankie's back to whining whenever he's locked up. I leave him out whenever I'm gone for short periods of time. 3/5/05: Frankie got adopted today! If I understood correctly, this man was looking for a dog to be a companion for his mother, but the dog will technically be his. So he picked Frankie!! (See bottom photo.) 11/28/05: I just found out yesterday that Frankie died about 6 weeks ago (around mid-October, I guess) from pancreatic cancer. He passed away in his owner's lap within a week after he was diagnosed. It makes me sad, but I'm glad he knew love while he was in this world.
