Are you looking for a holiday or birthday present for that intelligent, pet-loving child! If so, here's a book that may just fill the bill! Planet of the Dogs by Robert Mccarty is a sensitive, well-written new book that may become a new classic. Its definitely on my gift list!

Here's what the site says about Planet of the Dogs:

Out in space, on the other side of the sun is the Planet of the Dogs. This is the story of the first time dogs came to planet earth to teach people about love and to save the farmers of Green Valley from the invasion of the Stone City warriors.

Come join the adventures of Daisy and Bean and all of their wonderful canine friends on the Planet of the Dogs.

The story goes that dogs live on another planet and want to help out the poor, downtrodden humans. So a few dogs venture to Earth and make friends with a human family. From there, the dogs reach out to other humans. What would a book be without SOME conflict and in this case, its a village of warriors who want to take over everything. Needless to say, the dogs can't let that happen and well, read the book to see how it turns out!

Depending on the child's reading level, Planet of the Dogs is probably appropriate for children between 6 and 10.
