I want to announce a new contest I’m running on the blog. I’m in the midst of writing the sequel to Haint: A Tale of Extraterrestrial Intervention and Love Across Time and Space and she thought it would be fun to invite Dogsters (and other dog lovers too) to help her choose one or more new characters.

If you haven’t read Haint here’s a very quick thumbnail of the scifi doglit novel. Haint is told from the point of view of two characters — the Weimaraner Haint and his human, Amanda. There are other breeds and dogs mentioned in the novel including St. Bernards, Pugs, Airedales, Great Danes and especially Border Collies. The novel is set in the future where people are living in tribes based on their preferred breed of dog.

The sequel will have all these breeds and more, including a large tribe of mixed breed dogs. I already have several new breeds included in the sequel BUT, and this is where you come in, there is room for some new characters and maybe new breeds.

If you would like to see your favorite dog (there aren’t any cats in Haint but if you can make a good enough case for your cat there may be one in the sequel) become a character in a novel then bark in and give ne the following info:

Your candidate’s name, gender and breed
Dogster ID (if a Dogster)
Catster ID (if a Catster)
Why your candidate should be a character in a book
Why your candidate’s breed should be in a book (if they aren’t already in Haint)
Specifically why your candidate fits in the sequel to Haint (Hint–this is the most important question)

The contest closes the last day of September so send your entries into me as soon as you can. BTW, send them to me via “Bark to the Blog.” If you post them here in the comments section everybody will be able to read it but they’ll also be able to copy your dog’s style.

There’s no limit on the number of dogs (or cats) you can enter and please feel free to crosspost this announcement!

If you need to get a copy of Haint, check out Amazon.com, Borderlands-Books.com, Powells.com, any online bookseller or you can order it through any bookstore. Several petstores (see my website) and Borderlands Books in San Francisco also have copies in stock.
