I always find it amusing when the humans devote so much time, energy, and even their money to these "studies" which confirm what we dogs have always, always known.

Too bad they don't know how to use their intuition...but at least they do get the point eventually.

Congratulations, your Holiness Mr. Pope Sir, and let me just say that I howled with delight over the choice of name as Pope Francis, in honor and memory of St. Francis of Assissi, the patron saint of animals, the environment, cuz we dogs is all over that.

And while it is true that I did engage your predecessor in animated debate over his statement that the presence of animals at the first Nativity could not be proven...a point I refuted with vigor...I know that no one named for St. Francis, who is credited with creating the first nativity scene in 1223, (complete with animals, ahem) would promote such an idea.

Cindy still has St. Francis medallions that Frisco and Shantye wore on their collars after they attended special blessings...so she's real sentimental about this stuff.

Wow...what an amazing day...back when we were leaving Hawaii, with all the fuss and packing and everything, before me n' Barney got put on the airplane, Cindy promised me that we'd go to the snow again when we got back to California.

So today, just to take me and Barney to the snow country up at Bear Valley, Cindy took a day off work, drove many hours, then let me n'
Barney romp around.

I must admit, at first, I was stunned...after three years in Hawaii...and it had been at least another year before that since I had seen snow...at first, I didn't recognize it...then all the memories flashed back, of the days as a pup growing up in Nevada, the high desert...many trips through the mountains...snowbanks, digging with Shantye and snow flying everywhere...

It was so wonderful...and then driving home, Cindy and I started remembering all those car trips and snow play times...and you know, I could feel Shantye and Frisco in the car with us. We were the Dogs of Donner Pass back then...

It was a wonderful day.

So the very last Friday in December, I got this golf ball looking lump on my face...and of course it was off to the vet and on the way Cindy told me she was afraid maybe I had cracked a tooth and had an abcess...

Unfortunately, she was right...sigh...don't know if this is a sign of getting to be 11 1/2 years old, too many great chews...but it wound up being an extraction for me.

And now me n' Cindy been "negotiating" sorta...the pain med tastes and smells AWFUL...and makes me way woozy. The antibiotic is okay. So I went on pill strike...wasn't taking ANYTHING from her hand. Therefore, no pills...I'm not stupide after all.

So we had this big talk this morning that I really needed the meds and Cindy hated pushing stuff down my throat...

So I compromised and started taking the antibiotics readily and told her I didn't need the pain med...she said she was willing to try that but was gonna keep watching me.

I love a reasonable human.

Wow oh bow wow wow...we have had three days of storms here...and this morning the winds came up and the rains got even heavier...and we got no lights when we woke up...so Cindy got us all out to the car and drove us to a big mall with a covered parking lot that was very empty so me n' Barney could go walkies. We were getting kinda stir crazy. And she did that for us even BEFORE she went to get her coffee...and she needs her coffee, I might add.

But we got to walk and it was wonderful to be out, then she went to get her own breakfast, and now we are running errands and doing other stuff in the car cuz we know there's still no electricity at home. Living out in the ranchlands, the big trees get blown over on wires and it's very dangerous, and the roads flood too. We don't want the utility folks out there til this storm goes away.

It's pretty awesome. We had hurricans and stuff in Hawaii but this is pretty impressive.

We gonna have a long car ride today!

Okay, according to His Holiness Pope Benedict...quoted on the web...

Okay, according to His Holiness Pope Benedict...quoted on the web...

"As churches and families around the world prepare to dust off their Nativity figures for the festive season, Benedict writes in a new book on Christ that contrary to popular belief, Jesus's birth was not presided over by oxen, asses, camels or indeed any other beasts.

"There is no mention of animals in the Gospels," he wrote in the third and last volume of his biography of Jesus Christ, which like the previous two books is expected to become an international best-seller, with an initial print run of a million copies."

Okay, your Holiness sir...I know I'm just a dog...and you, obviously, are Pope and all...but I'm taking you on on this sir! How did Mary get to Bethlehem? On a DONKEY. And where did they have to stay? A STABLE...hello...and there's this big rush of folks trying to travel for the census, there's no rooms anywhere, and you're telling me the stable was empty? I don't think so. The inn's own critters had to be there, plus Mary and Joseph's donkey, plus any critters of the travellers. And then, we got the shepherds in the hills with their flocks. Even for an event of this magnitude, with the star and the angels and all that, you think those sheep gonna just stand there on the hills, in the dark, all by themselves and watch the shepherds walk off? I don't think so...His Holiness may be the great shepherd of the Catholic church but it seems to this dog he's spent no time around real sheep.

And with all that hay and stuff out there, you think there's no rodents?

No animals at the stable...harumph. I submit that critters were indeed there...and not only were they there, they probably had a doggone good idea something very special was going on, too...Double harumph.

And there's other doggies here too, including Ms. Cathy's own dogs and some other doggies sleeping over like us. I love doggie sleepovers...of course we miss Cindy, but she really doesn't leave us very often, and she said she was going back to Hawaii for just a short visit and it is way too much plane ride and quarantine junk for us to go just to visit. She also said she remembered she promised us we'd never have to do anything like quarantine ever again, and that sending us to a boarding kennel would be too much like quarantine. So we get to do this awesome doggie sleepover at "The Urban Pooch." Woo hoo!!! Somebody throw a toy!

My pack bro Barney's getting a real Napolean complex being a small guy on the ranch (except for a couple of cats). Heck, even one of the roosters is bigger than Barn. I do miss the festivities in Hawaii though...this is also King Kamehameha's birthday (thereby making me doggie ali'i) and the parade and festivities always made my birthday a bit grander.

We do! We have arrived at our new home. We live on a ranch! It is so fun. Cindy rented a nice cottage on a ranch down nearl Calero Resevoir in south Santa Clara County. It is wonderful. It is so much cooler than Kapolei...and while I know I will miss Hawaii and especially my Hawaii friends, it isn't easy being a full coated Keeshond in Southwest Oahu.

We have lots of interesting critter folk here. I think my favorite is the pony. He even touched noses with me. There's a big Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Ben, and he's very nice. Barney tried to pick a fight with him cuz my bro hates big dogs, and Ben threw a hip check on him like a hockey player. End of that! No harm done but Ben made his point.

It is very quiet here. We're still kinda getting used to it but overall, it resally is lovely. Cindy says she doesn't mind the drive cuz anything is easier than H-1 in Hawaii...lol...not sure what that means but she seems very sincere about it.

We have returned to Northern California...after a very long day in my crate on the noisy airplane...but the joy seeing Cindy at the airport, and being immediately released...no quarantine this time!!!! I danced on my hind paws.

Barney was all Mr. Tough Guy stoic as usual...but I know it is hard on him...all the noise, and being a smaller doggie and smaller kennel I think he doesn't like the ride at all.

But we had to be strong and cheerful for Cindy, she had so much stress on this trip...

But you know, the very great thing me n' Barney realized on our first California morning walk...

Okay, she walked it, she did not run it...but for that whole day she put in over 12 miles (8.3 of it on the official course). Cindy has an artificial knee on her right leg so me n Barney were kinda worried about this, but we faithfully, faithfully, day after day, took her out walking...on weekends sometimes we went very far and me n' Barney got kinda tired...but we pressed on.

The Great Aloha Run is a very special event, very Hawaiian in spirit...Cindy always said she wanted to participate in one and now she has done it.

She came home and hugged both of us and said she couldn't have done it without her training partners, me n' Barney.

We were so proud and happy...and kinda glad we didn't have to do the 8.3 mile walk...BOL.

Even Barney said I smelled really nice when I got home even though he says the groomer is kinda sissy stuff and he hates it when he has to stay home alone when I go off to the spa. He pretends he doesn't like the grooming stuff but I know he likes going with me and I have seen him sneak in a tiny kiss on the groomer's hand.

So my pack bro, Barney, needed a check up today. First off, we both LOVE car rides so we got very excited to be going in the car. And we really like our vet staff, so when Cindy let us out of the car we took off at full speed to the vet clinic door, and I hit it with my front paws to open it, but Barney didn't quite cut the turn right and he wound up ducking around one of those plastic patio chairs that was on the sidewalk next to the door and was about to drag it into the clinic. So of course Cindy dropped our leashes to catch the chair and me n' Barney just kept going full speed all the way to the back of the clinic in the surgery area. Since we were first (and only) doggies in there we got to say hi to all the staff as they were having their morning meeting. Then we realized "where is Cindy?" and decided maybe we should go find her. She was standing at the receptionist desk with her face kinda in her hands...which worried us til we realized she and the receptionist were laughing. Apparently, from what Cindy and our vet tech were saying, they aren't used to doggies breaking down doors and dashing into the clinic, most of the other doggies kinda have to get dragged in and are more likely to run out.

Seems kinda funny to us, what fun is that? You're not gonna get any tummy rubs, treats, or scratches doing that stuff. And all the folks are our clinic are really nice. We just couldn't wait to say hi to them.

Too bad about the chair thing though. Barney doesn't make turns real well even with his short little legs, it's that whole long back thing.

Getting a little tough to be a fuzzy Keeshond out here these days...Cindy's been stripping out my undercoat, and shaving my legs and my underbelly...and she keeps the house as cool as she can for me n' Barney. This is considered the desert of Oahu and we don't get as much rain or wind as other parts of the island.

This is actually harder than when we lived in Nevada...it was way hot there but never humid. I spent a lot of time in my wading pool in those days.

I keep hoping he'll follow my example and come find out how much fun it is to play with other doggies, to jump in water and play tag, to dog-dance and play bow...and to meet so many nice folks and doggies.

But I guess those days back in the shelter just have too many bad memories. Barney just sits with Cindy the whole time we're there...maybe all I can hope for is he won't be stressed when we get there, even if he can't really have fun...

Well...this will be our first July 4th weekend on Oahu with the new fireworks laws...which are supposed to mean no privately owned fireworks get shot off. Now, while a lot of doggies would rejoice over that news (most of them residents of Hawaii) me n' Barney are gonna kinda miss it. Cuz Cindy taught us that fireworks aren't bad, they just mean people are having fun. We used to sit upstairs at the big window, Cindy in the middle and me n' Barney on either side of her, on New Year's Eve and 4th of July and watch all our neighbors celebrating. Sometimes we even had popcorn!!! So Cindy said she'd take me n' Barney on a picnic way up the hill this year so we can watch the Oahu shoreline and see all the big fireworks shows. Wow...we even get a car ride this time.

Now...I must add...the noise of fireworks when you can't watch them is just a nuisance...and me n' Barney hate it when we're home alone cuz we can't really watch them and snuggle with Cindy and it basically keeps a dog from having a decent nap.

So, don't get me wrong...no pawactively endorsing fireworks necessarily, just sayin' even us dogs can enjoy 4th of July!

So today, Cindy came and picked me up from the groomer and she said we were going on a special car ride. I love car rides...but Barney was still at home and I thought that was kinda strange...but Cindy said she wanted this to be kinda a quiet ride and she thought Barney might get kinda excited if he saw lots of people. That's true, he can get kinda protective at times.

Anyway, I cozied down in the front seat and Cindy drove for a little while, and I could tell we were going up hill away from the ocean and starting to slow down, so I sat up to check it out.

Wow. I never saw so many flags flying along the road. And the view, it was so wonderful, from the hill overlooking the ocean, and a wonderful breeze. I thought this must be a very nice place, it felt so peaceful...but there were so many people...so, so many people walking everywhere...and so many flowers, and little flags...and lots of little stone markers...
Cindy just drove around for awhile...something must've made her really sad cuz she had tears in her eyes. I sorta wanted to get out and run in the breeze but somehow, somehow I knew that wasn't the right thing to do here, this wasn't a play park.

This place was so beautiful, so peaceful, but Cindy seemed so sad...then just before we were going to go back out on the road, she stopped and just whispered "thank you," and bowed her head. And I was watching all those folks walking around, carrying flowers and little flags to those little stone markers...

Cindy said the place was called "Punchbowl," but it had a big long fancy name like National Veterans Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. I won't ever forget it myself, not just because it was so beautiful and peaceful, but I never saw so many humans being so kind and caring in one spot.

Today, Sunday, Cindy spent ALL day with me n' Barney...she didn't leave us for anything, not even church...she took us up there and she introduced us to her friends. All her friends there remember Sato, the dog that Cindy had when she lived in Hawaii before...so many folks came out to the car to meet me n' Barney...

I wish I'd known Sato...everyone was talking about how smart she was and what a great dog. One person even called her "Sato san..." wow.

Anyway, they thought I was pretty, of course, and I got lots and lots of pets.

Barney was even okay with meeting everyone.

Then we went to this great big wonderful dog park...I was kinda worried about my brother Barney cuz he's got some baggage from when he was in the shelter...but Cindy let me go run free right away, and then walked Barney all the way around the edge of the dog park...then she let him go free too. He was kinda apprehensive...he really, really doesn't like big dogs running around him...he got "rolled" so much at the shelter. But he hung tough, I was so proud of him. One big black dog came running right at him, and Barney went over and stood by Cindy, and I cut the dog off...nice-like, you know...but pretty much let him know not to go running fast at my bro. Not a bad scene, the black dog dug what I was saying.

We had a wondeful time. We went riding in the car all over the place with Cindy.

Kinda tired when we got home, but great, great day. A whole day with her. And a car ride, and the dog park...wow, life is good...

Saturday, me n' Barney n' Cindy paid our first vet visit since we left the dog jail (quarantine station)...to be honest, we've been missing our friends back at VCA Blossom Hill cuz they were all so nice to us and took such great care...and it isn't always easy going to a new vet or new groomer when you love your old one...cuz it makes you kinda miss em...

But anyway, it was time for our annual visit, and Cindy said she'd been looking around and asking around and even visited two clinics without us before she took us to see Dr. Vance...

The clinic was kinda small but boy everyone was so nice. And they were fun too, they played with us a lot and the exams were just fine. I was so proud when Dr. Vance didn't say one thing about me needing my teeth cleaned, and I'm almost nine years old. (I love my Greenies...)

Barney even did okay, and he's usually kinda a scaredy cat. He actually played with Cisco the vet tech and Dr. Vance...and Barney's usually more wary of meeting guys than ladies. But they were so friendly and fun.

So we got poked and prodded and checked but all in all it was fun and we were so happy to find a nice vet again. We could see that Cindy was really happy that we were so at ease too...and very happy that everything checked out a-ok.

K, so, we live out in Kapolei, out on the low flat ground of Barber's Point...so when Mommy Cindy woke up to the tsunami siren on Saturday morning, things got a little busy...

Without even having her coffee, she was looking in the phone book at maps, then she got dressed really fast, and drove away...and me n' Barney didn't even have breakfast!!! And no morning walk either...no trip to the beach...

We were wondering what the paw was going on...

Then Cindy came home, smelling like the gas station, and she was carrying charcoal and other stuff and me n Barney got all excited about maybe having ribs...

But no, Cindy just stayed really busy and boy oh boy she was filling everything in sight with water. She filled the bathtub, the washing machine, buckets and barrels and everything. We started worrying about maybe getting baths, but no...

Finally, we had breakfast, Cindy had her coffee and walked us for a nice long walk...then we sat around and Cindy was watching the same picture on the TV...wasn't even the Olympics or anything, just someplace she called "Hilo Bay..."

We thought she'd really lost her mind, cuz all that was on the TV was water going back n forth and back n forth in the picture...okay, so it was going fast and stuff...

Finally she kinda sat back in the chair, finished her coffee, and started smiling more...

Whatever a Tsunami is, it would be nice if it didn't happen again. It kinda messed up our nice Saturday morning.

I miss snow, I really do. I always loved playing in it. No chance of that here, but we did get a very fine outing to TWO parks on Christmas Day, including some off leash time when Barney and I could run just as fast as we could across the grassy lawn....

That is very, very far from the concrete and steel of dog-jail quarantine.

So, Cindy has hurt her back, it's been really owie...and this has been a big concern for the whole pack.

But today, she was all worried because it should've been my bath day but she can't do it...she could do Barney cuz he's little, but I needed one too, even I knew that.

I was thinking of running through the sprinklers or something but I didn't really think she'd buy that...

And then we get in the car, and drive over to the SPCA station that's really close...and I got all worried cuz there were all these guys out there washing cars with hoses and big buckets of soapy water.

Dear dog...she's not gonna turn me over to them?

But no, of course not. A nice lady named Stephanie came and got me and then her and Tina gave me a very fine bath and nice towel dry, they were so nice to me, and on a hot Hawaii day the bath felt really nice.

And then I found out that my dog bath got a donation for the doggies at the shelter. Wow, how cool is that.

I think Cindy should let SPCA give me my baths more often...we gotta check this out.

So Cindy woke up early enough this morning to really cook breakfast...and she made scrambled eggs with ham and cheese and made enough to give me n' Barney some...then she went with her coffee to go sit watching TV (golf is on, something about President's Cup)...and me n' Barney got to have chew sticks and sit with her on the sofa and be scratched and petted while we muched away.

You know...ever since quarantine...ever second we are together as a pack, every laugh we share, every time I get to just lay against her and feel her scent really strong and feel her heartbeat...well, those are all very precious moments now.

Not bitter about quarantine or anything, cuz we just had to do it to stay together...but it sure does make a dog appreciate the little things in life even more.

I hope we have many many many more Sunday mornings like this.

I don't know if anything makes four months in dog prison "worth it" but the dynamic dog duo had one hell of a fine time romping all over Haleiwa Beach which we had pretty much all to ourselves when Cindy took a day off and drove us out there. We knew it was someplace special right away, cuz Cindy used to think about taking us there and talk to us about it in quarantine. I had been to the ocean before but not Barney...at first, he was really puzzled by the big ocean and the waves, but then he got so excited about exploring stuff he just ran and ran and ran with me. Even on our flexi leads, it felt like thw whole earth and sky were open to us, that we could run forver. And then, Barney saw this lady doing something called "stand up paddling" (paddling on a surfboard). He got so excited about that he actually ran into the waves like he was gonna swim to her...but of course Cindy pulled him back. The Stand Up Paddly lady laughed at Barney and said he was cute. Barney wants Cindy to learn that...but she says she knows Barney's just gonna be a joy rider though.

Running on the sand, dancing with the waves, digging in the sand...wow, that stuff really flies...it was like all my dreams for the days in quarantine about what I wanted to do came true at one time...

The long strange trip is done, we are really in our new home now...

Barney and me walked out of the dog jail (quarantine) with Cindy this past Saturday, and life has been too wonderful for barks...we have a nice little yard all our own, we can watch people going along the walking path and even see kids in the playgroud. There's all kinds of places to go walking and exploring, and trees, real trees, real big ones with lots n lots of shade underneath.

And all that lovely grass and dirt... a dog can really get their paws down in it and scuff up a good cloud of dust, you know...and after so long living on concrete, that is just wonderful. Me n' Barney have some good contests about who can kick up the most dust!

Shantye was Cindy's "big dog" when I came home as a puppy...she was a wonderful big sis and had a heart of gold. In her senior years she was a working therapy dog. That's not as much hard work as the service doggies who make their humans lives so much better. But Shantye would've been the first to howl out a long salute to the Assistance Dogs!

So the poor cat mommy found out when they got here that her kitty was stuck doing max time like me n' Barney...only me n' Barney are almost done. Cindy said less than a month now. Wow...well actually not sure what a month is, but Cindy sounded way excited so I am too.

But at least me n' Barney n' Cindy all knew what was gonna happen...

She says there's something called chamomile in it, and that she drinks that same stuff in her tea.

She also said there's gonna be those big noises tonight that the humans do every summer, but she didn't think it would be too bad up at quarantine. Just that some of the doggies gonna be way sound sensitive and she said me n' Barney should try to set a good example and be calm.

Well, any news about almost being out of here is good news...but this is kinda getting old and it's wearing on me now. And it's literally wearing on Barney. The little guy's always sat kinda lopsided, on his left hip...and being on concrete all the time...now it's worn kinda bald over there.

Cindy had the quarantine vet check him and she said he looks okay, no skin problem...but still...

I'm so tired of concrete and steel...and so thankful for moments of grass and dirt and not looking at stuff through a wire fence...

So today, Cindy arrives at quarantine early, like almost always on grooming day. We had new doggies move into the kennel section next to us, so Cindy didn't take me through there on the way to the grooming station cuz she didn't want to raise a ruckus and disturb the new neighbors...they just got here and they're in "quarantine quandry..."

So at first, I thought the grooming day visit might not be as good as usual...not as much time out of my jail cell...but I ran to the grooming table and put my paws up on it to let Cindy know I was ready and raring to go.

I love grooming day...Cindy hugs me a lot, I give her kisses, I look nice after...although sometimes there is that bath thing at the end...

But today, I watched Cindy keep looking and looking and looking through her big bag of dog stuff...dare I hope??? YES! YES!!! Thank the Maker YES!!! She forgot the shampoo!!!!!

Yesterday, when Cindy came to jail for visiting hours, she was moving Barney from my kennel back to his own - we get family time now, we can all be in one kennel - I managed to dash out and get a fast lap in. Cindy didn't chase me or get excited...she just stood and called me and of course I came back...no one from the quarantine station even saw me, I was so fast....

Just needed to stretch my legs a little and feel the wind through my fur.

We are 1/4 of the way done with our jail sentence. Still hoping for a hacksaw in the mail from Miss Eve.

This place is just so blah. Concrete and steel fencing...gray, gray, gray.

I need color I tell you. I gotta send Cindy after some decorations.

I get out of my pen at least once a week now on what Cindy calls "grooming day." It is so wonderful to feel real grass and dirt under my paws, and I even get to dig a little. And then while I'm up on the grooming table I am at the perfect height to give Cindy kisses.

I wish every day was grooming day.

Egad...I have landed in the most pawstrating situation...State of Hawaii Dept of Agriculture official doggie quarantine!!! Noooooooooooo

Gee, Hawaii sounded so great...and yeah, cindy did mention this was gonna happen but I think I was more interested in the beach and learning the doggie hula, you know...

Sigh. The room is really nice and clean, the staff is friendly and kind, I have a good fresh supply of water and Cindy made sure they had my own food for me. Barney is right next to me. We see Cindy every day...but that awful moment when she walks out without me is just terrible. Yesterday I could NOT stand it anymore and slipped past her and ran all over the place barking and prancing...til I realized she was still standing back at the kennel looking all sad...so of course I went back to her.

I can not wait to get out of here.

Another noteworthy vector in Hawaii is the flea and its ability to transmit the plague. Fortunately Hawaii does not have ticks and fleas that carry Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Today was kinda fun, but kinda sad....we went to see MY vet, Dr. Hare...Cindy's doing this to help me n' Barney to be ready to move, I have seen this before...extra vet visits...funny stuff like the medicine they put on my neck. It is sooooooooooo funny when they have to find skin under my Keesie coat. Took two techs and Dr. Hare today but they did it.

And a nice long exam that gave me plenty of time to give Dr. Hare kisses. I know she knows I love her...

But Cindy was so sad when we walked out...I think all this moving stuff is making her really tired, wish I could cheer her up.

Cindy showed me pictures of hula dancers on the computer...dancing with flowers in their hair, along the ocean...oh that looks soooooo wonderful. So that's a beach! Wow, that looks almost as much fun as a snowbank. I can not wait to try a doggie hula myself, I love dog dancing and especially when a person dances with me. And I LOVE flowers...I want one of those lei thingies as a collar.

Oh this is just gonna be so much fun. I wish Barney would stop being such a grump about it.

Cindy sat down with me n' Barney...and I could tell a big pack meeting was in order, she looked really serious and all.

She said we were gonna move the pack and pack to move (this got Barney really confused), and that we'd be living in a place called Hawaii.

I was like "bow-wow-wow..." cuz I have moved with Cindy before.
I thought it was great fun, but then I think almost everything is fun. We had great car rides, I got to see snow for the first time and got to play in it while the car was stopped by the roadside...Cindy said that was something called a blizzard and "road closure." That was great fun...even if I was the only one having fun. And I LOVE car rides.

But Cindy said not much of a car ride this time, I was gonna go on an airplane. Zippity do dah! Never did that before. I'm psyched. Any doggies out there done that? Will they let me sit in the co pilots seat?

If'n there's any doggies out there on dogster who live in Hawaii, I'd love to hear more about it. What's a beach, by the way?
