Sorry for the delay in the update! Mommy and Mama are in Florida, enjoying Disney and having a ball! They really needed a vacation. So we got a vacation of our own. We are staying with Nanny and Poppy M. and it's awesome. We get lots of treats and Nanny is really good at giving us our pills. You see, Rudy is still on the allergy pills and omega 3s, and in January, Izzy got a stoopid UTI and is now on antibiotics. It was pretty scary actually. She had some blood in her pee, so naturally mommy freaked out and took her to the vet, and they had to get a pee sample, and then send the culture to a lab. They even did an x-ray to make sure it wasn't stones. Luckily nothing showed up on the x-ray. We were so relieved.

Anyway, Poppy is giving us lots of belly rubs and taking us on walks. We miss Mommy and Mama but they will be back in a week.

I am so frustrated I could just cry. After nearly four years, I am still no good at walking the dogs. It seems like I am making every mistake, and no matter who I consult, or what I try, those two stubborn schnauzers do what they want. Even though I they both had initial training. I have multiple problems, and I’m begging for advice. I don’t always like walking my dogs anymore, and that breaks my heart. Here are my problems:

1. Izzy (4 years old) pulls like crazy. I switched from her leather collar to a martingale collar and at my session with the dog trainer, he showed me how to correct her when she starts to pull forward. So that’s what I do, and 2 seconds later she is pulling again. I have to correct her a least twenty times during the walk, and that’s a low estimate.

2. Rudy (6 years old) is incredibly stubborn, and could move concrete digging in her paws if she wanted to. If there’s something she wants to smell, then she yanks and pulls to get to it, or, digs in her paws and refuses to move from what interests her. This is really hard to deal with when trying to train Izzy.

3. I have Izzy’s lead in my right hand, because she needs more correction and I’m better with my right hand. I have Rudy with my left hand because she insists on walking next to the grass to get the good smells. However, on the way back, this doesn’t work (if I take the same route). Should I be switching sides of the road to make sure Rudy always gets the grass side? That seems a bit passive on my part, and then Izzy doesn’t get to walk next to the grass. If on the way back, I walk so that Izzy is next to the grass, then Rudy is constantly darting in front of or behind me to get to the grass. I’ve tried shortening their leads, but then they both seem to pull harder. Either way, their leads get tangled multiple times per walk. I’ve tried a double coupler, but Izzy just ends up dragging Rudy along.

4. The trainer said that I should walk Izzy separately, because she needs the corrective practice, and also because she needs more confidence. Right now I figure she walks twice as much as Rudy, because she tries to walk ahead and then if Rudy pees, she backtracks to pee right where Rudy peed. Then she tries to bound ahead again. However, walking Izzy separately is really hard for me, I have limited time, and not only that, I can’t imagine taking one on a walk and leaving the other home to look out the window! And no, I don’t have anyone to help me walk them.

What do I do? I realize most of these problems are probably my fault because I haven’t been pack leader, and all that. I try to be confident, and give them commands like “halt” when I want them to stop. That works probably 60% of the time. But the pulling is exhausting, and correcting her constantly doesn’t seem to be working. Izzy is not food motivated, so bringing treats to entice her doesn’t really work.

I am so sad, because I used to like walking the dogs, but it seems like it’s getting worse, and it just breaks my heart that I don’t even want to walk with them any more. :( I need help. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mommy Sarah

Thank you Dogster for making us a daily diary pick, and thank you to all our friends for your well wishes! Rudy's insect bite is all but gone now, thank goodness. Izzy's hot spot is still sore, because Mommy is a BAD MOMMY, and forgot to put the cone back on after Izzy ate, and she scratched it all up again. That was yesterday. So since Mommy found it and cleaned it up again, the cone of shame has remained ON, despite Izzy's pathetic-looking face and begging eyes. Mommy has to keep the cone on Izzy for her own good! The guilt, though! She hates it so much. Hopefully in another day or two the cone can come off.

Mommy is feeling a bit better too. She was feeling really down and sad with all the news, but, believe it or not, the Olympics have been really inspiring and fun to watch. It's still hot and muggy here, so Mommy is spending time downstairs, and bringing us down with her cause it's the only "sort of" cool place in the house.

love to you all!

Boy, did we have a yucky week! First of all, it was very very hot for Newfoundland, today it felt like 36 C/96 F - which is WAY TOO hot for pups here in Newfoundland who are not used to it! See it wouldn't be so bad except houses here generally don't have air conditioning, just air exchange or fans. So, we've been wearing our cooling kerchiefs (Mommy puts them in the freezer to get nice and cold). Mommy likes heat but not humidity, and this humidity is BRUTAL.

The humidity tends to cause hot spots for Izzy, and she was doing SO good, but of course, last night, after one of the muggiest days of the year, Mommy came home to see Izzy's face bleeding, full of pus, and a big circle with the hair torn out. Besides freaking out, Mommy feels so bad, because maybe she would have seen her scratching had she stayed home instead of going out for the night. :( Anyway, we had the cleansing solution from last time Izzy had one, so Mommy cleaned her up really good, and put on the antibiotic cream, and then the dreaded cone of shame. Poor Izzy. Mommy is just trying to keep it from getting infected, so we don't have to go to the vet, because it feels like we live there. :(

Which leads us to Rudy. Rudy went and got bitten by some weird insect, likely a spider. Although Mommy didn't know that at the time, and freaked out. It was a big red circle with a dot in the centre. It looked (from trust internet pictures) like ringworm, or a tic bite. Mommy and Mama both freaked, and decided Rudy had to see the vet. She wasn't scratching the bite, but trying to lick it (rather unsuccessfully). Anyway, Mommy took Rudy to the vet, and the vet looked at it for about 30 seconds before deciding it was a bite, and it was Rudy's intense allergies that made it look so bad. 12 hours later and you could barely see it. Thank DOG the nice vet didn't charge for that visit.

So, hot spots, insect bites, holy humidity, and on top of that, Mommy had to submit an article for publication (the deadline was this week), so it was a rather stressful week. Mommy says it's a good thing she doesn't drink or she would be an alcoholic! Although, come to think of it, a bodka dwip would not go astray!!!

There's a lot of sad things in the world, and sometimes Mommy can't see past them to see the good. Of course these bad things are everywhere on the news, on the internet, and really hard to avoid. She tries real hard, but she's depressed and anxious no matter how hard she tries. We pups give her as much love as we can, which helps a lot, of course. And the dogtor has Mommy on medicine to help the sadness, but the agitation and sadness sometimes are too strong for the medicine. Mommy gets tired a lot too, cause it's just tiring to be sad and nervous all the time. So, if you pups have a minute, could you put your paws together and send POP and prayers for Mommy? She just wants to be well again. She says it's a long road to recovery, and she knows that some of you understand how bad it can be sometimes. Thank GOD for dogster buddies. Mommy is taking some time off facebook, and watching tv - we think that might be making the agitation worse. She's gonna get out her cross-stitch again, and try to do things that make her happy. Luckily, that means lots of doggie snuggles.

We had a wonderful vacation at Auntie Jill's house! While Mommy and Mama baked in the sun in Cuba, we got to go on doggie vacation! Jill and her hubby Ed have a farm with hens, turkeys, a rooster, even doves! They take dogs in whose Mommies and Daddies are going on vacation, and as you can see from the profile pic, it was a full house! WE LOVED being at Auntie Jill's. It was a real pack mentality, and Jill told Mommy we were good as gold. We got to go on real long walks in the woods and play with the other doggies. In the picture above, we are all waiting patiently for a treat! We are glad to be home now though, so we can start our routine barking out the window again! There's no place like home!

and you know what that means! STRESSED spelled backwards is DESSERTS! A few days ago she made apricot raisin cake and now she's jonesing for some banana bread. We like this trend. Cake is the best smelling stuff in the whole world! And if a crumb drops to the floor, all the better!

All joking aside, Mommy has decided to limit her facebook time considerably, cause it is so much fun she is on it WAY too much. And that won't get a thesis written! So, the best way to keep up with Mommy Sarah and us pupses is through this page right here! This dogster-fing is much less stressful than that book of faces-thing, so feel free to drop us a line or keep up with our diary right here! After all, we couldn't go off the grid entirely - Mommy would get the shakes or sumfing!

Mommy is getting mad cause Izzy is a jealous, jealous dog. She tackled Rudy when she got out of the tub, and was growling very loudly at her. She does this a lot lately. She is jealous whenever either Mommy or Mama give Rudy necessary attention for her skin condition. What do we do? It's getting ridiculous. Izzy sounds like a big massive rottweiler, the sounds she makes, and Rudy just lets her pounce on her.

(Mommy speaking) It looks like playing, but it seems pretty rough sometimes. I usually never hear a yelp, but today I did, and then Izzy backed off. I have tried grabbing Izzy by the neck and saying "no" firmly, but as soon as I let go, she goes right for Rudy again. If I separate them in different rooms, as soon as I let them out, Izzy bolts for Rudy again to pounce/attack. It freaks me out cause it seems like it is getting more frequent. We are both giving Izzy lots of cuddles and loves too, she is definitely not "left out" but she seems to think she is. I can't let Izzy in the tub with Rudy because it's special dermatological vet shampoo, and Izzy doesn't need to be bathed twice a week anyway. When they play, as soon as Mama gives Rudy some attention, Izzy stops what she is doing and pounces on Rudy, growling loudly and biting at her neck. It's like she HATES it when we give Rudy any attention. Now if one of us wants to play with Rudy, the other Mom has to hold Izzy and distract her! This is not a good solution. What do we do? Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

We woke up to a lovely email saying that we had been chosen to be a Daily Diary pick for Dogster! Yippee! We love barking in our diary to all our friends, and we are sure glad that you read it!

What has been new this week? Well, Mommy and Mama are both sick, and Mommy lost her voice completely, and they are both barking this real strange bark. Mommy can't yell at us, so she points her finger at us if we do something bad. Not that we are ever bad, mind you. Ever! Mommy has not been on dogster much this week so we may have missed a few barkdays, gotcha days, or rainbow bridge days. She is sorry if we missed them!

One of our good friends Ramona (Jiffy, Bella, Scooter's mom) got a new pup! Her name is Rosie and she is really sweet. We can't wait to see her dogster page. We just love it when our friends add dogs to their family!

It is fall now, and we are getting a lot of rain. That's no good for our walks! Mommy walks us in the rain sometimes, but not as regularly, which is bad, cause Rudy is supposed to get exercise every day to keep the weight off! Rudy has to be less than 20 lbs when we go to PEI at the end of the month, or they won't let her fly in the cabin with us! She is 20.4 lbs now! (Mommy says if they ask, it's just her fur). The dermatologist appointment for Rudy can't come soon enough, poor Rudy is scratching herself to bits, and is going to have to wear tee-shirts soon if it continues to be bad. She is not allowed her medication for 3 weeks before the appointment, so as to allow the dermatologist to see how bad she really is. It is hard on everyone, and we are trying to give Rudy extra loves because she is so uncomfortable.

That's all on this end. We will bark more soon.
love Rudy, Izzy and Angel Ben in heaven

We have pink eye! Nobody knows how we got it cause we haven't been around other dogs in ages, and haven't even been around any on our walks. Maybe we caught it off grass or something? Mommy had an appointment to take Rudy to the vet because her skin was bothering her a lot, and Izzy came too. The vet took one look at Rudy's eyes and determined that she had pink eye, and it was a good thing we brought Izzy in too, because the vet looked in her eyes and determined that she had it too. So eye drops for both of us, in the morning and night, for ten days. The whites of our eyes are real pink, and Mommy is hoping she or Mama Deb don't get it too. The vet said you couldn't transmit it from dogs to humans, but we have had several people say that they have gotten it from their dogs!

We are starting our preparations for our trip to Prince Edward Island to see the vet dermatological specialist. There isn't one in our province, so we have to fly to see one in another province. They are really rare, apparently, and there are only a few in Canada. Hear that, aspiring veterinarians?! Do a specialty in dermatology!!! We need more! Anyway, we will be leaving Oct 27th, and returning on Oct 30th. Rudy will go to the Atlantic Veterinary College and have skin testing and allergy tests on Friday the 27th. Mommy and Mama are flying us all to Halifax, and then we are driving to P.E.I. because only large airlines take dogs in the cabin, and we sure aren't going in cargo, Mommy says. Since the large carrier doesn't fly into Charlottetown, it is easier to fly to Halifax, and of course it is a shorter flight. Then we will drive from Halifax to Charlottetown. If we are able, on Saturday we will go see our breeders Diane and Barry, and see all of their schnauzers. They have eleven!

It is going to be a challenging three weeks for Rudy, because the dermatologist wants her off the prednisone for the next 3 weeks, and off of the omega 3 fatty acids and antihistimines for 10 days before the appointment. Since Rudy is still scratching *with* the prednisone, she is going to be quite uncomfortable this month. We are really hoping it is not too bad, but we have to put up with it to get accurate results at the specialist appointment. Mommy thinks she will be giving lots of oatmeal baths.

So, that is where we are right now. Hopefully October won't be too hard on Rudy, itchy wise, but keep us in your thoughts and prayers. We will keep you updated!
love Rudy and Izzy

Well Mommy had her panties all in a knot because we were getting another hurricane, this one was named Maria, almost exactly a year after Hurricane Igor damaged Newfoundland so badly. We got our heavy duty extension cord. We got our generator ready. We got flashlights, charged our cell phones, made ice, and had lots of food ready. The schools were closed. WE were ready. With Igor last year we lost our power for four days and we were going to be prepared.

Well, we had a bad afternoon. Lots of wind and rain, but luckily our basement didn't flood and we didn't even lose power! The worst is over now! Apparently instead of directly hitting St. John's, most of the action happened about 50 kms offshore. What a relief! We lost our internet for a little bit, so Mommy was in facebook withdrawal, but it was nothing serious, there were no reported injuries, and I think damage was minimal! Thank God! Hurricanes are nasty business, and after last year, Newfoundlanders know all too well! And Mommy had all that nervous energy and anxiety for nothin! She even ate her "anxiety chips and chocolate bar", when there wasn't even anything to worry about. We slept through most of it in our afternoon nap. Now Mommy wishes that "anxiety vegetables" were as tasty as "anxiety chips", her waist would be a LOT smaller! BOL.

Hope you are all well!

5-28-11 News on the Kirk Puppers (cross-posted from Minister Misty)

FEMA is coming to their property to look things over at 5 p.m. Please pray that FEMA can help in someway. Either temporary housing or help with the replacement of their home.
Bill is going through the debris with his hands (manually).
Shawna's people who deliver her oxygen, said she has to go to Freeman Hospital and have a breathing treatment.
They suspect she inhaled insulation and other debris. :(
Her bark and coughing is much worse this morning.

She found a pair of summer white shoes for church covered in something all red and black. She soaked them in clorox and laundry soap and scrubbed them up. She will be able to wear them. 2 simple dresses bought just before Easter (as she has been losing weight) were found. She soaked them and they will be wearable. When evening comes she washes out clothing in the sink.

Still no power. Have City water to be able to wash themselves off and hand wash a few pieces of clothes. They are overwhelmed by the support from here...They thank all of you. They are relieved they will be able to treat the puppers for the fleas/ticks for a short time. One less thing to worry about. Candles and all kinds of batteries C and D mostly are a real need. Because there is no power and so many people need batteries and candles, they are harder to find everyday, even to purchase in a store.

There are more and more places to go and have a meal at least, places are set up each day. Now the time waiting for something to eat doesn't take so long. The endless appts. and paperwork to fill out, go here and there to see what can be done, fills a lot of the day.

Around that they try and dig in the debris, looking for scraps of anything they can save. A small handful of old pictures were found. Most stuff like that, has been so water logged you can not identify the items at all.

The TEARS keep coming with each trip to try and find something...Bill said," he can feel our prayers and he felt stronger yesterday. Shawna, thanks everyone for all their prayers, thoughts and love shown to them."

This will be a long, long road back to anything that seems normal.....
We appreciate every single Fur that has pmailed, left a message, reached out in anyway to help the Kirk Puppers. DOGSTERS HASVE TO STICK TOGETHER!!!

Addition: I have been facebooking with Dogster Mom Alisha (Sasha and Roxy) who went down to see if she could help in the area. She has spoken to Shawna, and found out that Shawna has pneumonia. She needs flexi-leads for the dogs, and she is going to see what she can do. I have the info to wire the family money if anyone wants to make a donation, which is what we are going to do.

We copied this directly from Mazy's diary, Mamma Shawna's friend (Dogster ID 1122249), we thought everyone should read about her bravery in saving her pups!

"PleaZZZZZZ Pray for all the Furs and Peoples across the country who are going through all these BAD,BAD storms and tornadoes.

Our furiends the Kirk Puppers: Copper,Harley Davidson,Haro,Lucy and Ashton are O.K. but, Now Homeless! The Furs were not injured cuz their Momma Shawna laid across them and covered them with her body. Momma has cuts and bruises, but they will heal.....

We found out today that before Momma Shawna got the furs to the bathroom, they were in the hallway. The twister hit and tore the back 2 bedrooms off the house. She shoved those fur babies into the bathroom, throwed towels on them and laid on top of them.
Not a scratch on those precious furs....

The twister took the whole house away, Momma's SUV, trees and everything, nothing but rubble and debris left. We talked to Momma Shawna today.... We know it is very hard right now for them. The most important things are still with her. Her parents, son, husband, other family are O.K. Her precious fur babies...

Momma said,"The hand of God was on her, cuz the twister was trying to pull her out the back of the house, while she was pushin' furs into the bathroom." No power where they are. Have a small MP3 player for AM radio and Bill's Cell phone. Momma's phone flew right out of her hand...."

Here are the Kirk pups Dogster ids: Dogster members have been asking for the Kirk Puppers ID's. Here they are: Ashton 782176, Haro 782176, Lucy 776648, Harley Davidson 776010, Copper775999 and Angel Molly Mae 781734. You can send them messages through these ID's. We do not know how long it will be before they will have a way to see them?

The family is staying with a friend. If you would like to send a card here is their address:
Shawna Kirk
c/o Jayna Myers
4507 West 26th. Place
Joplin,MO. 64804

We can't afford to do much, but we will definitely be sending a little something for them.

Re: Power of Prayer for Momma Shawna's pack in Joplin

A dogster family has been directly affected. Harley Davidson, Copper, Lucy, Ashton and Haro and their parents Shawna and Bill were directly hit and their house is gone. Momma Shawna saved the pets by lying on top of them in the bathroom. Only one wall of the bathroom remains. She does not know where all of her family is. It is very tragic and they could use our prayers.

Here is Harley Davidson's page:
http://www.dogster.com/dogs/776010

We are very very sad to hear this, no one deserves to lose their house... :( We will be praying very hard and hoping that all of Momma Shawna's family is okay.

Last week we let our pals on Schnauzers Rule know that our Nanny (who is 91 years young) fell and hurt her leg last Thursday. There was a big commotion and she had to go to the hospital in an ambulance. Well, she fractured her leg, and she can't walk at all, so she is still in the hospital. We are NOD pleased about this. The hospital is, as Lexie says, NDA (NO dogs allowed), which truly stinks, cause we would be able to make Nanny feel so much better! So we have to wait in the truck when Mommy and Mama visit (see our new profile pic). Mommy and Mama take turns so we are not left in the truck by ourselves very long. We bark and bark, cause there are lots of people going back and forth into that place. Hopefully Nanny can hear us barking, and it will make her heal faster!!! BOL.

Till Nanny gets out of that yucky hospital, we won't be able to see her. That is truly the worst. Nanny is a great back-rubber. We went to Nanny's house the first few nights, and it was so strange that she wasn't there.

If anyone has any extra prayers for our Nanny, it would sure be appreciated. She is starting to learn to use a walker, but she is bruised up on her side and ribs from falling, so they are keeping her in a few more days. Tomorrow Mommy is taking us to the pet "spa" so we can get "beautified", and hopefully we will get to see Nanny next week.

Well it may be May, but it is COLD here! Mommy took us on a walk tonight and she had to wear earmuffs, and we had to wear our winter jackets! Not fair, it is supposed to be Spring, isn't it? Other parts of the country are getting snow, so I guess we should count our blessings.

Apparently there was a big royal wedding on Friday morning. Sheesh, Mommy even got up in the very early morning to watch it! She said her invitation must have gotten lost in the mail. We didn't see any dogs there, though, so it couldn't have been too good. They did have horses, so I guess that's something. Still, all in all, pretty boring, if there's not even any dogs. The Queen is supposed to have Corgis - where were they? They definitely should have been in the procession. It would have been a lot cooler then!

BTYL!

Hi guys! Dogster made us a daily diary pick! Thank you Dogster! We are excited today because it is SUNNY outside! This is a BIG DEAL cause it was snowing and hailing yesterday. Seriously. We have a very weird (and late) Spring up here in Newfoundland. So it is nice and beautiful, although still cold, so Mommy is going to dress us up (including our coats) and we are going on a walk soon.

But first we have to address something very important. Repair persons. Across the street there has been a white van with a repair man going in and out, in and out, with various instruments and tools. It is very suspicious. We have let him know that we are watching him, and one false move... Mommy says it is "Barkageddon" here. She even had to go out for a "sanity latte" yesterday afternoon. Hee hee, oops. :D

Have a great Saturday everypup!

Holy moly. Now that the snow is melting, Mommy says it's "one holy bleeping mess" out there! She never said bleeping though. She said one of those not-suitable for sensitive ears words. Anyhoo, finally it is getting a little warmer, which means we are getting more walks. The snow is melting, but there is still a lot of sand on the roads, and mud, and dirt and stuff, which means a MANDATORY BATH after every walk. Talk about punishment! We had a great walk today, the sun was out, Mommy took her time letting us smell everything, we walked a nice distance, and then she has to go ruin it by washing all the good stuff off! And not just a wimpy leg bath either. Today we got so filthy (her words) that we needed full baths, even our heads! Mommy sure knows how to put a damper on a great day!

Seriously, pups, it's -2, and we have lots of snow, blowing snow and wind right now. We refused to go outside and do our business until we were absolutely busting, which was around supper. We held our pee ALL day! Then Mommy snuck up on us and put our winter jackets on, and made us go outside. The wind was blowing up our backsides, and it was NOD fun. Izzy is a lot better at being in the snow than Rudy, in fact she doesn't mind it too much. Rudy, however, thinks the world is coming to an end. If Ben were here, he would stand just far enough out the back door, to do his pee on the deck! Mommy says he's up in rainbow bridge where he can lie in the sun all DAY. That sounds nice. We will hold down the fort down here, Ben, until we see you again!

Hey pupses! Mommy took Ben back to the vet yesterday cause he was barely eating, and it was stressing us all out. Mommy was putting out all sorts of good fud, and he wouldn't touch it. Not chicken or rabbit, or cheese or roast beast or salmon. NOT EVEN SARDINES. It was getting serious. After 48 hours with only a few little treats in hims belly, Mommy said enough was enough. Well, good news. The vet examined him and decided that the super strong antibiotic was making him nauseous, and so she gave him an anti-nausea, appetite stimulant pill to take. Also, he wouldn't take any of his pills on Thursday, so his stomach had a break from the antibiotic anyway. Well, Mommy took him home and opened up some smelly wet dog food to try to entice him, and he ATE! And nod just a little bit! Mommy was so excited she started to sing and dance. Rudy was put off cause she didn't get to finish Ben's dinner, and Izzy wasn't sure why he got yummy wet food. But it's all good, cause he ate!

Then we got up this morning, Saturday, early, to do our business outside. It was 6 a.m. We decided to let Mom sleep in - BOL. Anyhoo, Ben was hungry!!! So Mommy fed us all at 6 in the morning, and he gobbled his breakfast all up! Mommy was real proud, and then we all went back to bed for a good snooze.

So Mommy is happy today, and tonight we are going to Mommy's Mommy's house (Nanny) cause it's her barkday. Mommy made a homemade carrot cake with cream cheese icing and the hoomins get to have pizza. That's okay, cause Mommy promised us some yummy rabbit. It has been a good day.

Well, Mister Ben has been with us for almost four months, and we are FINALLY settling into a routine. Mommy can ALMOST figure him out now. Here is Ben's schedule:
8 a.m. get up, go out
8:10 eat breakfast
8:15 go out for other urgent business
8:20 go back to the hoomin bed where it is nice and warm and go back to sleep
12:00ish get back up
12:00-3:30 walk around house, look out window, snooze on couch
3:30 nap
4:30 go outside to investigate possible intruders and check yard
4:30-6:00 relax, watch tv, be entertained by Rudy and Izzy, do some barking, torment Mommy
6:00 eat supper
6:15-7:00 chill
7:00-9:00 snooze
9:00 demand snack, and maybe a short play with Mommy
10:00 go outside for urgent business, investigate yard
10:15 go to bed and snooze all night!

Mommy is pretty happy with this schedule. Ben is an old man and doesn't play nearly as much as us two young girls, but we keep that in mind! He even watches us when we wrestle, but he keeps his distance. BOL.

Christmas 2010 was Ben's first Christmas with our family, and we think it was quite successful! First, we got like fortelebenty Christmas cards, and the mommas only got a few. Ha! Power to the PAW there! Secondly, Ben got to meet Santa Claus, and he was a real good boy, and we even got a great family photo (you can see it on our page). Mommy and Mama are real proud of that picture. Thirdly, we got some real nice pressies from our good pals Lucy & Daisy, and Zaidie! Wow, that was such a nice surprise. We love our MEATZ toys, our Snoopy toy, and the goodies for the mommies were much appreciated!!!

Let's see, we also had a YUMM-O Christmas dinner at Poppy's, and we had lots of fun watching the humans opening their presents. All that wrapping paper, and laughter! Everyone was in a real good mood! Today Nanny had a get-together and we went over to her house, and got lots of rubs and loves from cousins, and uncles and aunts, and all sorts of friendly dog-loving people! Ben was completely at home with lots of people there, and wasn't remotely scared at all! Today was also one of the only days in a long time that it DIDN'T rain, so we got to go on a nice walk! It has been pretty miserable here, we didn't have the snow that a lot of the Northeast U.S. got, but get this, in December, St. John's had 300 mm of rain! That is the most since 1909!!!

Anyway, we thank each and every one of our pals for our Christmas cards, rosettes and presents. We love you all, so very much. Dogster rocks!

We are a featured diary pick today. Thank you dogster! We are having a really great December so far. Hardly any snow, just cold and some frost. Last week it was so mild we had a big rain storm, and this week it will be above the freezing mark for most of the week! This is good, as Ben's arthritis seems to act up when it is really cold. Mommy has taken to putting tee-shirts, sweaters and hoodies on him every day, cause he seems to shiver much more than us (Rudy and Izzy)!

We are getting ready for Santa Paws at the house. Mommy is slowly decorating, and Mama will do the outside lights soon. We are hoping to get our tree up this coming weekend! It's always a fun time of year. Mommy is just happy cause the tree blocks the window, and it's more effort for us to get to the window and "ARRROOOOOO", which means we don't do it as often!!! BOL.

Ben is finally off his third dose of antibiotics for his mouth infection, but Mommy is not convinced it is better. He still rubs his mouth vigourously (sometimes whimpering too) against the couch or bed after eating. He still yelps if Mommy tries to go near his mouth. It's looking like he's going to have to have an x-ray to see if the infection has penetrated the bone. Our poor Bennie. Mommy and Mama are keeping a close eye on the situation, and we know our good vet Dr. Beth will do what she needs to do to get him better.

love to you all!

Hello! As you know, Mommy and Mama are fostering me (and probably adopting me) and it is their first foster. I am 10 years old, have 6 teeth, a collapsing trachea, slightly elevated kidney function and possible arthritis. I LOVE to eat. I can't wait to get as much food in me as possible! I am still a trim 16 lbs. though.

Mommy's question is this. You see, I have been here two weeks, and I still cry at night. I whimper at around 2, then again at 4, and then I get up at around 5 or 6. Mom wonders if I am in pain? She took me to the vet, and I had a full check up. The only place I wouldn't let her touch was my mouth. I am on antibiotics for a jaw infection, but I am already 5 days into them, so Mommy doesn't think that is it. Maybe I have arthritis which is making me stiff? Either way, Mommy is really tired, because my whining makes her wake up. She doesn't know what to do. I also whine a LOT when I am hungry, which is about an hour before feeding time, and I don't quit until I get food!

Mommy had never fostered or adopted before, and she knows she has to be patient, but she doesn't know what to do. Do you have any ideas? Mommy is getting ready to start an IV drip of caffeine for her, as Mama said Ben is "her" dog since she was the one who the foster people called!
love always,
Ben and Mommy Sarah

We haven't been tagged in a game for a long time either, so we are playin' dis here game!! Answer the questions, and then tag yourself if you want!

1)Du yu EBER wake yur pawents in da nite??
Yes! We both wake up Mommy and Mama if we want our backs scratched, and if we need to get more comfy. Mommy says we like doin' somersaults in da bed, whatever dat means.

2)Du yu eber tear up stuff???
Oh yes, kleenex are our favoritest eber, but we also like receipts, Canadian Tire money, or anyfing paper, or soft cardboard, like paper towel rolls. Mommy even saves them for us! Mommy says she is very careful not to leave REAL money around, cause we'd probably try to rip that up too.

3)Whut r yur FABOURITE tweet???
Oh, we love CHEESE, chicken, popcorn, and real doggie treats, like liver, lamb, and salmon based treats. We usually get grain-free stuff.

4)Can yu fetch sumfing when askded??
Sometimes. If it is a toy, there is a better chance we will fetch it, as it are relevant to our interests!

5)Hab yu eber wiveded anywhere else, 'sides where yu wive now??
We were both born in P.E.I. at the Ykelenstam's schnauzer breeding house. It was a great place, so big and fun. We stayed there till 8 weeks each.

6)Say yur cwush an' du NOD be shy!!
We has LOTS ob crushes on dogsters all over! You all mean so much to us! We pawticularly like those who write in diaries!

We don't know why this stuff happens and there is no point in trying to figure it out cause it will make you crazy. We just haf to try and be there for Ernie, and his momma, as best as we can. Every day with our pups is a blessing. We love you Ernie George, and we will do everything and anything we can for you, and we will light daily candles for you.
Thanks DOGSTER for making us Diary of the Day, we are honoured!

For those of you who read our last entry on applying to foster PJ, we have excellent news. It turns out that the lady who got him is a friend of Mommy's from university! She is a totally loving person, and PJ has got a great foster home. And she is hoping to adopt him too! Mommy found out this by accident, when her friend posted pics of her new foster on the people-dogster-fing, called facebook. HOORAY for PJ!

Isn't that the most fabulous news ever? What a great ending to PJ's journey.

Little PJ

Message Body:
Mommy applied to foster!!! OMD!!! OMD!!! OMD!!! There is a little dog, PJ, who has suffered a tremendous amount, was left outside, with no food or healthcare, and he had a huge tumour on his backside. He is about ten years old. A really great organization here (Heavenly Creatures) found him at a shelter, where they were about to euthanize him. Well Heavenly Creatures got him out of there, and even paid for his surgery (with lots of public donations). Now PJ is doing okay, they didn't have to amputate his tail, like they first thought, and he is ready to go to a foster home. Well, Mommy applied! She was not first pick because there are two other dogs in the house (us!!!), and they were concerned that PJ might need a sedate environment for now, but if anything falls through, then we will get a call! OMD!!!

Here is a link to PJ's facebook page if you want to see. Some of the pics show his horrible tumour, and there are after surgery pics and video to show how well he is doing now!

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=124938907545155

OMD! Even if Mommy doesn't end up fostering him, (and it looks like the first lady who doesn't have any other pets is a nice lady), she feels good about volunteering, and her and Mama Deb are going to donate money for his food and vet bill.
love Rudy and Izzy

Wahoo!!! We are going on our first trip of the year in our new trailer! Mommy and Mama are very excited, and we are too, because we always get to go too! We are staying in a few parks, Terra Nova National Park, and Pippy Park, for 6 nights. We will get to see squirrels, and rabbits, and maybe moose, bears or other animals! Izzy will get to eat ants if she wants, (BOL - she did last year anyway!) and we will both get to bark at all the birds. Mommy and Mama are going to have sweet relaxation, away from law firms, and universities, and cell phones and email. It's gonna be great.

Bark to you all next week!

Mommy had access to her email while they were away, and our lovely dogsitter lady Stacy wrote her a message to assuage her fears while they were gone; Stacy and her dog Oz came to our house for a week. Here it is!

"Everyone is wonderful!! Few mishaps: Oz had an accident on the tile the first day and one of the ladies, not sure which one, had an accident in the living room last night while I was asleep-not sure why b/c they had been out in the yard for 20 minutes before we went to sleep-unfortunately I am a heavy sleeper so I did not hear her go to the door. Don’t worry, I found a natural stain remover in the cupboard and the rug looks good as new!!!

Other than that everyone is getting along perfect!! Izzy is now totally comfortable with Oz and actually couldn’t be bothered bossing him around anymore…she finds bossing Rudy around much more entertaining! Watching them in the garden is hilarious they run and run and run and I have the darnedest time getting Miss Izzy in, lol. Oz actually tripped up in his own feet while running with the ladies Wednesday afternoon and skinned out his snout. He was a bit fretful so he spent the night at mom and dads and the ladies and I had a night to ourselves. Back again last night and everyone was back out in the yard running laps, so he is no worse for wear. Everyone is sleeping wonderfully, and actually it is Izzy who gets down in the middle of the night to sleep out in her chair. Sleeping with three dogs is a crazy scene let me tell you…I am the least of their worries…I have to strategically place myself around the three of them lol! Rudy sits like a perfect lady for me to clean her eyes in the morning and Izzy is the first to jump up for morning kisses.

So generally everything is great; everyone is eating perfectly, sleeping perfectly, playing perfectly and the house is still standing, albeit it a bit messy with three dogs and all their toys!! So, go, enjoy the trip, don’t worry about things back here, we got it all under control. "

I'd say we had it all under control! We had a blast with Stacy and Oz. Still glad to have Mommy and Mama home though.

love Rudy and Izzy

Mommy and Mama are going to some tropical island called Cuba where there are coconuts on trees and strange birds and flowers, and this weird thing in the sky called the SUN. They say it is a sanity vacation on account of it's been such a miserable spring here. Rain, drizzle and lots of fog. So they are going south for a week and we haf to stay home. We have a sweet deal though. We get to stay home in our own house, sleep in our own bed, and do all the regular stuff we always do. We have a dog/house-sitter coming! She is real nice, and she is bringing her dog Ozzy over, and staying for the week in our house to take care of us! Mommy interviewed her extensively and deemed her suitable (of course she was already a friend, or Mommy never would have even considered it!) to take care of us. She is going to take us on walks, and even though she works in the day, she is going to come back home lunchtime to let us out. We think it will work out just fine!

We will miss you, but we will fill you all in on our adventures when Mommy gets back and resumes her typing responsibilities!

love to you all!

Mommy is definitely a crazy dog lady. She loves ALL doggies, big or small, every kind, every mutt, every single one! When she sees a dog riding in a car, she grins from ear to ear. When we see a dog on our walks, we go over and say hi (if the doggie and owner look friendly). When she sees a dog wearing clothes she laughs with delight. She LOVES dogs.

But you know what she REALLY loves? Dogster dogs. All the great pals she has made on this fabulous webpage, their pictures and diary entries, and funny quips. Mommy talks so much about dogster dogs, that we feel like we know them, even though we haven't met a SINGLE one in real life! Lexie and Buddy, Zaidie, The Tetrad, Ernie George, Jelly, Zoe, Uno, The Sassy 6 Pack, The Gang, and so many more friends we have! We love keeping up with all of you. Mommy talks the ear off of Mama when she gets home from work, telling her about all of your antics. We love that we have met you all. Thanks for being our pals. WE LOVE YOU!!!

Izzy did more urka-gurkas, after we went to the vet, so we know for sure it were her who was sick in the bed and out in the living room floor. The dogtor was from Australia (where Zaidie's kangaroo fuds come from!) and he had a Doctor of Veterinary Homeopathy degree from Queensland. Isn't that cool? He gave Izzy a very thorough inbestigation, and decided that she did not have a blockage, and her tummy did not seem tender, but becauze of the bad smell on her breath, and her urkagurkas, she must have eaten something (probably outside, maybe rotten grass under all the snow) which upset her FLORA and FAUNA in her belly. So he gave her acidophilusmus and psyllium husks to put in her food (that will make her poop out any leftover grossities) and 3 days of antibiotic jus' to be on the safe side.

Well, we are happy to report that her bad breafs went almost completely away after the first night, and she hasn't urka-gurkaed since. Them psyllium husks WERKED amazingedly and Izzy was even up to playing a bit last night!

Mommy and Mama were glad that there was a good vet to see Izzy since our regular vet is on vacation. Thank you Dr. A!

One of us had (as Zaidie calls it) the urka-gurkas. We were not going to tell who it was, but there was puke on the floor, and we were both staring at it interestingly. Then there was another spot of puke on the bed! It was a mystery, as neither Mommy or Mama saw either of us urka-gurka! Mommy had to take the nice velour blanket off the bed and wash it. What a mess. But she's not mad, just worried. It was a mystery till this morning, when IZZY's breath gave it away. What a stink! Mommy says Rudy smells like roses in comparison. Humph. Izzy has also been urging, like she is trying to throw up, but can't. Mommy is not taking any chances, and taking her to the vet. She says between that and the bad smell out of Izzy's mouth, it is definitely enough to warrant a trip to the vet. Wish us luck.

Wow, it's a snow day! We are having a blizzard here in Newfoundland, all the schools and businesses are closed, and police are telling people to stay inside. So far we still have our power and we have a propane fireplace, so we are still warm. It is great because both Mommy and Mama are here, keeping us warm and snuggly. We have done a lot of napping so far today. It's wonderful. The only not-so-wonderful thing about the blizzard is when we have to go outside to do our business. Mommy makes us put our coats on, but the winds are 75 km/h with gusts to 90 km/h, so you can imagine how cold that is on your hiney!!! We run outside and back in as fast as our little legs can go. There is quite a bit of snow down already, close to 20 cms, and another 20-30 cms coming tonight. Guess we will be having a very quiet night! Mommy and Mama will probably play cards and drink a beer or two, while we wait under the table for the odd pretzel to fall!

Stay warm everypup, it's a cold one out there!

Mommy Sarah and Mama Deb are gone to T.O. for the weekend. You know what that means... PLAYTIME! We were brought over to "Auntie" Jill's house very early on Thursday morning, before the mommies had to get their flight. So far we have played outside in the snow three or four times a day, gone on long wonderful walks in the woods, and played with the big friendly galoot, Cody, a golden retriever. He is so much fun! Now that Auntie Jill is off for the weekend, we are going to have even more fun, playing and getting homemade bacon treats that Mommy packed in our "overnight" bag. Mommy said we had to share with Cody, which I guess we will, cause she did pack TONS of TREATS. Auntie Jill even lets us sleep in the bed with her. She's the bestest pet-sitter ever.

Mommy says she is glad Jill emails her with updates about how we were doing, otherwise she never would have left the province. She's a bit of a neeeurotic. She says it's a good thing we are having a lot of fun!

HAVE FUN Mommy and Mama, see you on Sunday!

Mommy made up a song and sang it while she was making our supper. She sings songs to us quite often, and we really enjoy it. When she starts singing, we know for sure it is our supper time! Tonight's song was quite good, and we may demand that she perform it every night for our evening entertainment. It goes like this:

Sung to the tune of "If you're happy and you know it"

If you're hungry and you know it
raise your paw!
If you're hungry and you know it
raise your paw!
If you're hungry and you know it,
and you don't know how to show it,
If you're hungry and you know it
raise your paw!

hee hee. Mommies are so silly sometimes!

Mommy made us a real yummy treat! It is blueberry banana biscotti made with handpicked blueberries. Mommy made a huge batch and shared them with some pups that we know, and EVERY pup liked them!!! You should try them! They are pretty easy to make, and they keep for a long time!

Blueberry Banana Biscotti
4 cups all-purpose flour (1 liter)
1/4 teaspoon baking powder (1 milliliter)
1/4 teaspoon baking soda (1 milliliter)
1 cup chopped peeled banana (250 milliliters)
1 cup blueberries, thawed if frozen (250 milliliters)
2 tablespoons each canola oil and water (25 milliliters)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla (5 milliliters)

1. Preheat oven to 350 F (180 C). In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder and baking soda. In a food processor, combine banana, blueberries, oil, water, egg and vanilla. Puree until smooth. Pour over dry ingredients and mix well.

2. In the bowl and using hands, knead until dough holds together. Transfer to lightly floured surface. Divide dough into 2 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a log. Flatten the logs to make about 4 inches (10 cm) wide.

3. With a fork, poke holes all over the surface of the logs. Place about 4 inches (10 cm) apart on baking sheet.

4. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until firm. Place pan on a rack and let cool for 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 300 F (150 C).

5. With a sharp knife, cut each log into 1/4-inch/0.5 cm thick slices. Place, cut side down, about 1/2 inch (1 cm) apart on baking sheets. Bake for 30 minutes longer or until hard. Transfer cookies to a rack and let cool completely. Store in a tightly sealed container for up to 30 days.

Makes about 1 pound (500 grams)

We had a great day with Mommy. First we had a great sleep-in all morning. Then some light and power workers came to our backyard to trim some trees that were in the way of the electrical wires. So we got to bark bark bark BARK at them! After they left, Mommy let us outside and we played in the backyard while Mommy hung out laundry on the line. But the best part of the day was when Mommy took us on a walk in the woods to pick blueberries! She said we were very good, letting her sit down and pick the wild berries while we stood guard. Mommy even said that we led her to some great berry patches! They smelled good, and we sniffed them all over. Now Mommy, will you make us some blueberry biscuits please?!

We are back from our voyages with the mutt hutt. We had a great time, and even went swimming (with life jackets, for a very short time). Mom will try to get the video and pics up soon.

However, we are back just in time for Hurricane Bill which is headed directly toward us. Hopefully it will be down to a level 1 or even a tropical storm by the time it gets to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, but so far it doesn't look good.

Please keep us in your thoughts, as well as all the pups in Atlantic Canada. Mommy will try to update you tomorrow (it's supposed to make landfall here by tomorrow night) and let you know how we are. We have plenty of water and supplies should we lose power.

love to you all! Gosh we missed it here!

Mommy says we are REAL BAD when we go on our walk with her. First, as soon as we see her get the poop bags and our leashes, we start singing and crying and barking like crazy. Then while she is putting on her sneakers, we start playing/fighting, especially Izzy, because we are so excited to go out! We make a HOLY RACKET, she says. Then Mommy hooks our leads on to our collars, and we try to run out the door as fast we can, nearly tripping her in the process. Mommy says we need DISCIPLINE, and she is at her WIT'S END. She says she doesn't want to walk us any more until we learn our MANNERS. She wonders does anyone have any tips to help her so we can continue to have our walks?!?!

A most concerned,

Alright Pal! You made it here. I see you caught my foot ball pass. Here is what you should do next! Hurry and pass the ball to 5 of your team mates so they can make a touch down. You are also supposed to write down 5 things about yourself that are funny. Also please leave me a bone and ask all those who visit your diary to leave you a bone so you will know they have been there! Ok…Here goes the play!

1. (Rudy) I wear my winter coat only when mommy makes me - I didn't mind it last year, but this year I do!
2. We both sleep in the human bed because we *love* being warm and toasty!!!
3. (Izzy) I bark really low and sound like a big dog, even though I'm only little. I especially don't like running children!
4. We both love to play with other dogs. Izzy is becoming more and more outgoing as she gets older, while Rudy is a little bit more reserved.
5. We go to doggie country camp once a week where we get to play with other dogs all day in a safe environment. We love it there, but we also love to come home!

My great friend Lucas Xenakis tagged me!

I am tagging to play:
Buddy
Jelly
Frodo
Sniffers

Mommy put the picture of the two of us in the Christmas present in the Dogster group Schnauzers Rule holiday photo contest. Can you believe we won first place for non-edited photo! Mommy did the absolute dance of joy when she found out! Now she doesn't feel so bad for torturing us by putting us in that stinkin' box! Georgie, Finnegan, and the other admins at Schnauzers Rule even awarded us 10 zealies for first place! Hooray! We love Schnauzers Rule.

By the way, the mysterious "awarding of zealies" was from the photo game where you had to guess the right type of dog. Mommy had forgotten that she played enough to win some zealies. Silly mommy!

We love you all and wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
