The Mom picked up my ashes today. She and the Dad had a good cry.

The people at St.Francis Pet Funeral Services & Crematory are very special people. They sent the Mom and the Dad a lovely, heartfelt sympathy card through the mail. And today, with my ashes, they included a sweet little St. Francis medal and prayer card.

Alex from Alex in Welderland's Custom Pet Urns is going to put me up onto WINston's couch urn. But, even though the container from St. Francis is just a temporary stop for me, it's a beautiful tin--white with gold trim, a bouquet of flowers on the lid and this printed on the side:

"Herewith are deposited the remains of one
who possessed beauty without vanity,
strength without insolence,
courage without ferocity, and
all the virtues of human beings,
without their vices.
This praise which would be unmeaning
flattery if inscribed over human ashes,
is but a just tribute,
which makes one grateful to now
have the privilege,
of the happy memories left behind,
by this pet."

just as lovely as Dixie...

Sully & Socks' Mom posted this in the Mitey Mitey Buh-ens Party forum:

There was one star brighter than all the others last night guiding home our precious Dixie Black Pearl...the Bridge was very crowded on the far side with all the angels who have gone before shuffling to find a spot to welcome her. Big WINston was front and center, drooling and barking...a beacon in the night. The rest of the Crew and Rocky were keeping an eye on Socks and Jenna as they kept trying to nudge closer to see. Levi & Kubbi, Brandibear,little Cocobear and Buh-ens were wagging their tails excitedly as they saw a beautiful, shiny Black Pearl angel with wings of glittering diamonds racing down the edge of the Rainbow to join all the happy, young angels waiting to greet her.

There were so many of Dixie's old friends there that she let out a howl of joy as she brushed away a tear, sad to leave her earthly family, but knowing that one day they would also cross over the rainbow and once again be all together. As she descended in the most beautiful field of flowers, the angels all barked happily to see their dear friend land in the arms of beautiful young man named Brendan, who kissed her and let her race to join them. The welcoming group had the biggest pawty ever and reminisced long into the night, telling Angel Dixie all about the wonderful sights she's see so clearly now and that her family would always know that she was watching over them, as all the other angels keep watch over their families.

Dixie told them about how she was guided to them by all the beautiful candles lit by her family and friends. She hoped that her family wouldn't cry for too long because she is now whole and happy to be free of pain. As the evening drew to a close, Dixie and all the other beloved angels blew kisses of gratitude to their loved ones left behind, thanking them all for the love and the wonderful times they had shared together over the years.

The angels all slept peacefully, knowing that they had left indelible pawprints in the hearts of their loved ones and would wait patiently to greet them into this paradise at the end of the Rainbow Bridge.

Dixie took her Pepcid, and while she was waiting for the hour to be up, the Dad reheated his Chinese food from Sunday. Sniff, sniff, sniff... she seemed interested, so the Dad hand-fed her all the chicken chunks. Then he used what little remained of the black bean sauce and coated some hotdog pieces, chicken chunks, etc. Dixie picked the chicken out of her bowl, and took some of the hot dog pieces from the Dad's hand.

Then the picky little missy took her self over to Burt's bowl and chowed down on some of his Beneful Hearty Stew (that the Dad should NOT be giving Burt--he's such an easy touch). So, a little bit of this, a little bit of that, adds up to another SUCCESS!

Dixie, sadly, has stopped eating the Blue Buffalo, the Beneful Hearty Meals, the Chicken Teriyaki, the beef summer sausage, the Tyson steak strips,etc. It's a struggle day to day to find things that she'll eat.

We're feeding Dixie different things by hand, sometimes lifting her lip & rubbing the juice/gravy on her teeth so she'll taste what we're holding. Dixie's remaining vision is getting more spotty so she can't see what we're offering her. She can't smell what we're trying to feed her as she has a lot of nasal discharge. Our vet said it's a high possibility the cancer has manifested itself up in Dixie's nasal passages, given how it presented earlier in her eyes.

Thank you so very, very much for the continued prayers and PotP. Dixie's made it so much farther than they thought she would. We are very blessed.

a happy update:

I got her to eat almost 2 whole cheese hot dogs at around 5:15am, and Lar got her to eat 2 more around 9am. Before anyone weighs in about the dangers of nitrates and preservatives in hot dogs, you're missing the BIG POINT--SHE ATE SOMETHING!

well, the Prednisone did cause some GI tract problems. We increased the Pepcid and today the pile glop of #2 looked like it had NO BLOOD in it! Hurray!

Dixie seems to like Blue Buffalo stews. She eating almost everything we put out, so the Pred has improved her appetite. Still not doing too well with the dry kibble. Oh well, can't have eveything.

Had a nice couple of walks at the park over the weekend. Dixie's energy level on the walks seemed better than last week. (of course, we still walk a couple of steps, sniff, walk a couple of steps, sniff, sniff). BOL

Burt "watered" Dixie's head when they were both sniffing along the one of the park's baseball diamond backstops. Thank D*g we had brought some wipes with us. Came in handy on the opposite end from where we thought they'd be needed.

Burt continues to clean up Dixie's food bowl. He's doing better on the Blue Buffalo we picked up for him. Burt's shape is still very "burrito" looking... our Burt-ito! LOL

Dixie's staples came out 1-2-3... so much easier to remove than stitches! We took Burt with for moral support (and because he wigs out whenever Dixie goes without him). He was whining & carrying on so very much at Dr. Jackie's office Dixie was worried about HIM!

The plan is to continue the Prednisolone drops in Dixie's remaining eye. Her pressure today was 14, and the eye itself wasn't inflamed. Dixie still has particulate matter inside the eye (lymphoma cells) causing cloudiness and reduced vision.

Starting today we began the Prednisone series. 1-20 mg tab twice daily for 7 days, then 1 tab once a day for 7 days, then 1 tab every other day until the supply of 30 tabs is gone. Additionally we started a Pepcid regimen to try and alleviate any side effects of the Pred.

The Prednisone will increase her appetite, decrease her calcium level, and increase her thirst. Possible side effects other than digestive upset include Hot Flashes!!! (I feel ya, baby girl, I feel ya) BOL

On the way home we stopped for chicken. Lar had the idea of getting some gizzards. Bought a 1/4 lb bag and Dixie ATE THEM ALL (minus the breading, of course)!!! And we had really good luck again this morning with the Beneful prepared meal--ate over half of it.

People are already weighing in left and right on how we should proceed with Dixie. Please be respectful of our decisions. They are very hard to make, and are made with love.

All that love can do, will be done.

Dixie ate all the chicken from my Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sandwich from Subway this afternoon. And we found some soft no corn, no wheat Bacon flavored training bits she seems to like.

In her current condition, Dixie is not a candidate for Chemotherapy. So, we are going to go ahead with the Prednisone, which will increase her appetite and lower her calcium levels, 2 very good things.

Picked up some little doggie diners--chicken stew, beef stew, etc. to try and tempt her to eat. At this point we are so not going to worry about food allergies. And if she doesn't eat them, Burt will.

That will become more of a problem... Burt's already big, and Lar's been giving him whatever Dixie doesn't eat. Being a lab mix, Burt has a big fat ol' Lab body and these skinny little legs and head. He's beginning to look like a Burrito. LOL

Will let you know how the staple removal goes tomorrow afternoon.

Much love to you all...

As we read everything we can lay our hands on about lymphoma, one thing keeps coming up, time and time again. This is a darn sneaky disease, that can be going full steam in a dog but the dog acts like nothing is wrong. Only after things have gotten so very bad, when organs are involved (like Dixie's eye) do you realize something is wrong.

As we wait for the results, b-cell or t-cell cancer, we begin to feel it's too late. Last month when Dixie had that diarrhea she couldn't shake, that could have been the tipping point into systemic illness. Already she doesn't eat in the morning, and it's becoming harder and harder to find something she will eat.

We feel cheated. We should of had 5 more years. Now maybe we have weeks. It's hard to celebrate each day of life when each day becomes a struggle to live.

I listen to her as she breathes. In and out, so loud, as if she ran a marathon. And maybe that's what these last weeks/months will be like. A grueling marathon, finish line in sight, but oh, we wish we could just keep running...

The Mom took me in to see Dr. Jackie because my eye looked more cloudy today and I tried to scratch it (I know, bad Dixie). Dr. Jackie fit us in to her busy schedule.

Bad news is there IS more protein in the fluid behind the cornea. So my vision is more compromised.

Good news is the drops are keeping my eye "soft" so the drains in the inner eye are still working and haven't plugged up. Plugged up = increased pressure = blown pupils = loss of vision. My pressure is 4, which is lower than normal, but makes Dr. Jackie happy.

I'm still on track for staple removal this coming Monday (on the Mom's birthday-how's THAT for a present?).

We should hear back on Thursday with the biopsy results. Paws crossed...

Back in March of 2008, a dear pup named Hayden decided to throw a pawty after finding out that a bully buddy named Buh-ens had an inoperable mass on her heart, and sadly would not be with us for too much longer. Four and a half years and 1,591 pages later, the Mitey Mitey Buh-ens Party (in the Party Time & Virtual Play Dates forum) continues to give companionship, love and support to all that drop by.

As you know, Dixie BlackPearl developed Secondary Glaucoma in her left eye, possibly from a blood cancer. She lost that eye on Tuesday. Today we posted this in the Buh-ens forum:

beloved Buh-ens family... words cannot begin to express our thanks for your prayers, kind words and continued support for Dixie BlackPearl and her family. Today we received a package from Buhens. Big, but light. My heart stopped when I thought it was a stuffy. Should have known that you would know and remember that the only "toys" Dixie ever plays with are blankets (a hold-over from when she was riding the roads as a trucker's dog?). When we opened the box we found a beautiful red dog-print blankie, with wonderful big fringe, the perfect size for tossing over Dixie for play.

bless you all, and please continue your support as we fight the good fight with our darling girl.

about taking her antibiotics and pain pill. Dixie has always been quite the gourmand when it comes to food. If you offer her something by hand, she'll lean in, sniff it, and gingerly take it into her mouth. If she's not sure about the taste or texture, she lowers her head & drops the food onto the floor, then sniffs it again. If it passes the second sniff test, she'll eat it.

This doesn't bode well for us sneaking Clavamox, Doxycycline & Tramadol past her! She used to take pills with cheese. But, because she ALWAYS chews her food, she caught on fast about that, and stopped eating cheese.

Then we tried liver sausage. We'd give her a piece or two sans pills, then the loaded piece. Dixie would chew each piece before swallowing, and then pittooee, out would pop the pill.

We tried the pill pockets yesterday. Chew, chew, chew, swallow, pittooee! Deja Vu! What a little stinker!

Picked up a feeding syringe today. We tried cream of chicken soup with dissolved pills. Worked somewhat. Tonight, her Daddy tried tucking a pill into the end of a mini-egg roll (paws crossed no Pancreatitis). Of course, it worked!

Can we say "spoiled Daddy's girl"? BOL

Her poor Daddy is beside himself, blaming himself. It's hard to say if it looks better, worse or the same. Both her Daddy and I were shocked by how she looked when she came out of surgery and both of us avoided looking at her poor face. It was that, or break down and bawl like babies. Dr. Vernot believes when the University of Wisconsin biopsies Dixie's left eye they will probably find cancer, specifically cells from some sort of blood cancer. We will have a path to follow for treatment going forward.

Dixie has something starting in her right eye. Dr. Jacqueline Vernot started to treat that eye today. I said "to save her sight" and Dr. Vernot corrected me: "No, to save her life". Truth.

Well, Dixie had her follow-up with the ophthalmologist this morning. Apparently we saw what we wanted to see the other day when we thought we saw reaction in her eye.

Even though Dixie's eye is less swollen and is more comfortable, her eye is still non-visual and her pressure is actually slightly worse. So, the meds helped with the Uveitis, but did nothing for the Glaucoma.

We've added another medicine to the mix, having Urine Blasto Antigen testing done, and are going to have the abdominal & thoracic xrays and ultrasound repeated, looking for the systemic disease or neoplasia that's causing the Glaucoma.

And so it goes...

A big thanks to Dr. Jamieson from Animal Eye Consultants for hauling Dixie's file with her to Elgin today so she'd have it, just in case. Another big thanks to Brenda from Banfield Schererville who texted our vet, Dr. Mullings, that Dr. Jamieson needed to touch base with her about Dixie. And the biggest thanks to our favorite vet, Dr. Trudy Mullings, who took time out of her vacation to call Dr. Jamieson to go over Dixie's case.

Uveitis-nonvisual, negative dazzle & menace, pupil fixed & dilated, moderate aqueous flare, central hypopion, fundus visable, optic nerve appears slightly inflamed, pet has 1 month history of weight loss & elevated liver enzymes, ddx: systemic disease, neoplasia (possible cancer at bottom of eye--not primary, but secondary spread from an unknown location.
Well, Dixie isn't getting her teeth cleaned and her cyst biopsied tomorrow after all. Before we left the vet last week, I had her draw Dixie's blood for testing too. Got the call today.

Dixie's one liver enzyme is elevated. Don't know the reason why. I'm so very careful about everything they eat, after WINston was poisoned by MenuFoods/Nutro back in 2007. They get NOTHING made from China. I research where the ingredients that make up their food and treats some from, because even though a product is made in the USA, ingredients could come from China (the poisoned Nutro was made in Canada with ingredients from China).

Our minds are spinning. The vet said she's fairly confident in the Cushing's diagnosis for Burt, but the tests tomorrow will point us in the right direction for treatment or for an ultrasound. Dixie? Who knows. I want to puke.

Good case scenario with Cushing's is about lifespan of two years after diagnosis if it's caused by tumors. I am numb. This can't be happening again. I can't lose them both.

Weeeeeellllllllll, seeing as how both Dixie and Burt's bloodwork came back with liver enzyme problems, I'll update on D&B's joint page. http://www.dogster.com/dogs/1084910

Well, It's that time of year--time for the dreaded dental. I eat the EXACT same thing as Burt, but my teeth are all scummy. Burt's? Pearly white! The Mom and the Dad decided they weren't going to have my teeth cleaned anymore because last year and the year before I had a lot of problems with anesthesia--super low heart rate, which the vet thought was a reaction to acepromazine. The second time we didn't use the Ace, but I still had a low heart rate. Then vet hooked me up to an ekg during my next physical and low and behold, periods of irregular heartbeat!

Fast forward to Thursday. Burt & I spent the day with Doc for our semi-annual physicals, and the vet was going over what she found with the Mom. The Mom was going to tell the vet about the decision not to do a dental. Before the Mom could open her mouth, Doc told her about a pea-sized tumor that she found in MY mouth! Right above my front teeth, attached to my gum. So, I have to be put under so Doc can remove it and send it out for diagnosis. Might as well do the dental while I'm resting my eyes.

Will let you know how things go next week.

Three years ago, after losing Remo and Lucy, we were no longer a Triple-Dog Family, for the first time in over 20 years. How very, very strange to have just one dog. Dogs are like Potato Chips--you can't only have one!

But our hearts were very bruised, and we hesitated to open ourselves up to love, and eventually lose, another dog. Lose yet another piece of our hearts.

But we took a chance on Dixie BlackPearl, and she took a chance on us. A shy, timid, frightened shelter dog, the volunteers had worked with you for over six months. You needed someone to believe in you. To take a chance. And little did we know how much more we would need you just three weeks later.

Dixie, thank you for saving our hearts.

So, the Mom hopped on the internet and ordered Burt and me our very own Thundershirts! The website not only offered the original Heather Grey Thundershirt, but also a Pink Rugby and a Navy Rugby Thunder Shirt--perfect for diva Dixie and dashing Burt. We'll be stylin' real soon and we'll be ready for the next TStorms that roll through ChiTown!

For those pups not up on what Thundershirts are for, well, the name says it all. From their website, www.thundershirt.com :

With its patent-pending design, Thundershirt’s gentle, constant pressure has a dramatic calming effect for most dogs if they are anxious, fearful or over-excited. It is this pressure that has a dramatic calming effect for most dogs if they are anxious, fearful or over-excited. From real world experience, we know with certainty that Thundershirt DOES WORK. That is why we are able to offer a money-back guarantee. Based on surveys completed by over 1,000 Thundershirt users, over 85% of dogs show significant improvement in anxiety symptoms when using Thundershirt.

Thousands of veterinarians and dog trainers now recommend Thundershirts for their anxiety cases. We recommend just putting on a Thundershirt and observing the results (No training!). You very well may see significant improvement for noise, crate, travel, barking and others with absolutely no training. For more complicated anxiety cases, we recommend using Thundershirt as part of a behavior modification program.

One thing is for certain, for a very large percentage of dogs, Thundershirt’s gentle, constant pressure has a terrific calming effect. This has obvious benefits for most types of anxiety. But Thundershirt is also a very useful tool for managing excitability or hyperactivity with strangers, on the leash, or in a training environment. Thundershirt’s calming effect helps a dog to focus (or refocus) her energies in a more constructive direction, allowing training to be more effective.

We'll bark back about our results ASAP!

My seizure activity is ramping up. The Mom had to take Wednesday off when about 4am I went into overdrive with panting. My heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest. The Mom gave me 2 Melatonin, but that didn't even take the edge off. I was moving around a lot, and burping from all of the air I was panting in. The Mom first thought I had bloated, but my tummy was soft and there was no retching or drool. Nothing the Mom did could calm me down. The Dad said It was like I was on doggie uppers.

The Mom finally remembered about applying pressure (TTouch, Anxiety Wrap, Thunder Shirt...) so she slung her leg over me and pressed down on my flank. She put one hand on my breastbone, one hand on my spinal column mid-back and pushed. Holding me firmly like that, I finally closed my mouth and started breathing through my nose, but still fast. Slowly I came down, and finally fell asleep. Trouble was, if the Mom started to drift off and loosen her grip on me, I'd wake up panting. This went on for about 4 hours.

The Mom picked up the Comfort Zone DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) diffuser and that seemed to help me. Instead of sleeping in the pawrents bed or on the wooden floor, I laid in the dog bed right by the DAP. I seemed ok for the most part on Thursday, just a couple of fly-catching incidents, but this afternoon I had a smaller episode with the panting and racing heart. It's a concern because I can't take most sedatives--I go too far under. Vet gave me Acepromazine (sp) once and almost lost me when my heart rate slowed too much. The Mom is going to order the Thunder Shirt ASAP.

It's always something, isn't it?

Of course, it wasn't anyplace FUN... I went to Samantha's (the Groomer). The Mom said my fur was out-of-control, so I had to go in for a bath, blow-out and trim. Burt really, really wanted to go with me. But if he knew where I was going, I think he would have changed his mind. The first and only time Burt went to Sam's he hid in the corner of the shop until the Mom came to get us. I stayed with him in the corner--for company, you see.

The Mom said that HoneyBunny (one of the Chicago Crew of Angels) would actually walk up the ramp into the tub all by herself! Without the Bather even telling her to--she liked bathes that much! The Mom said that since I put on weight I look more and more like a Black Pearl version of HoneyBunny. The Dad really loved her very much (still cries about her even after four years) so to be compared to HB is a GOOD thing!

The current Dogster poll has got my backhair up! And Burt's too!

The question: If you could add another pet to the family, what would it be?

The first two answers:
- A wonderful rescue pup.
- A beautifully-bred dog.

My question:  Why not both?

Over 25% of dogs in shelters on any given day are pure bred dogs. Pure. Bred. Dogs. Or, as the poll so cleverly words it "beautifully-bred dog(s)". So how about SAVING a life and adopting your next "beautifully-bred" dog?

If you are leery of shelter dogs (and, as a shelter dog, I ask Why???????) you can contact any of the hundreds of reputable "beautifully-bred" Rescues across the United States. For info on breed specific rescues, go to www.akc.org, and click on Breed Info, select the breed you are interested in and then click on Breed Rescue for lists of breed-specific rescues by state.

So, again, I ask, why not both?
Why not a Wonderful, Beautifully-bred Rescue pup and save a life?

Until there's NONE, rescue ONE!!!!!

I went to the vet yesterday for some shots and my semi-annual checkup. I have been coughing a lot, and the vet took xrays to make sure I had no growth or obstruction in my esophagus. Everything with that was a-o-k.

The Mom talked to the vet about my "fly-catching". It's a very mild form of epilepsy. It's call "fly-catching" because of the behavior. The dog or cat will fix their stare off into the distance, staring at nothing in particular, their eyes fixed, non-blinking, and almost pop-eyed. In my case, my mouth is closed and I breath really fast through my nose (I'm normally a mouth-breather).

Nothing disturbs me when I go into one of these trances. The Mom can be right next to me, calling "Dixie", "Dixie", "Dixie", but I don't even hear her or even blink. The vet asked the Mom to keep a diary of when I have these episodes. The vet didn't seem too worried about it, and neither did the Mom. Just another part of the uniqueness that is Dixie!

Here we were, minding our own business, enjoying the park on a warm Saturday afternoon when we were swarmed by this little yappy thing. Circling and circling and circling, and yapping and yapping and yapping. And it's people trying to dodge our leashes, chasing it around in circles (have to admit it WAS pretty funny how this little itty bitty thing had these people all in a FRENZY).

What a panic! Guess they thought Burt and I would eat their baby for lunch (us being big mean lookin' black dogs and all... BOL). Would have been TOTALLY avoided if they'd OBEY THE LAW and LEASH their dog. And me and Burt? Totally calm, totally in control. Totally on a harness and leash.

Burt FREAKED! He did NOT like going to a new place. He did NOT like meeting new people. I hardly had a chance to sniff around and get some treats from the employees admiring my beautifulness. Burt kept jerking around and trying to bolt for the front door, so we left :(

The Mom and the Dad bought Burt a couple of new "babies" (the word Burt associates with little stuffies). They also bought me and Burt these things called "Merrick Bones". I don't get it. The bone SMELT good, but it's HARD! Not worth the trouble, if you ask me...

(but the stinkin' CAT liked the bones! He was licking them and biting the grizzle off of them. Go figure...)

The Mom was NOT pleased. Let me explain... Burt and I went to the Groomer's Monday. Today we had a "melt" here in Chicago. It got up to 39 degrees! So we HAD to go for a walk this afternoon. Without our coats!! Wooooooo arrrrrrrroooooooooo! Senka Park (three blocks from our house) was in full melt-mode. Lots and lots of puddles and mud! There's nothing like mud oozing up through one's pads. Walk through mud, walk through a puddle. Walk through more mud, walk through more puddles! Such Fun!!!
Well, I don't know where they were for eight days, but the Mom and the Dad are BACK!!!!! Wooooo arrrroooooo woooooooo!!! They came back last night and it was like PARTY!!!! They brought TREATS, and gave PETS and HUGS and KISSES, and we got to SNUGGLE in bed all night long!!!!!! I am SUCH a happy girl! I kept breaking into a combination Happy Dance / Zooooooooooooomies all through the house!

A little birdie reminded me that tomorrow, February 10th, is my 7th BARKDAY!!! Well, we're not sure WHEN I was born, as I was dumped at the shelter in the middle of the night. But I turned up on Feb 10th, so that's the date we use. Originally I was going to the V E T tomorrow for a semi-annual check-up, but we rescheduled due to it being my BarkDay (not really--severe snow in the Chicago area, and EXTRA lake-effect snow falling in Indiana where my Vet is). So, I get to have another day with the Mom and the Dad and treats and pets and hugs and kisses and snuggles. It's so GOOD to be ME!

Well, I sooooooo don't get all the excitement around here this afternoon. The Dad had this stuffy ball thingy, and he kept telling Burt "are you gonna get it?" over and over again. Then he tossed it across the room and down the hallway, and Burt ran after it and picked it up. "Good Boy, Burt, Good, Good Boy!" You'd have thunk he performed a super-canine feat or something they way the pawrents reacted.

Burt ran into the bedroom with the stuffy in his mouth. Then after a bunch of "Come, Burts", he brought it back into the living room. Such excitement over what??? I just DON'T get it (literally and figuratively). Dad tried to toss a stuffy for me to chase and I looked at him like he'd lost his marbles. Divas DO NOT do fetch!

From UStream:

Tune in daily to see the cutest Shiba Inu pups... EVER! ;)
The five Shiba Inu pups (3 boys and 2 girls) were born on Saturday, January 16th, 2010.
This was the second litter by their mom, Kika.
Names pending...
Girls (both red):
B1, B2
Boys (1 red and 2 cream):
B3, B4, B5

First photos of the new litter -
http://www.puppycam.yuku.com/topic/1314

For more information on the Shiba Inu dog breed go here - http://www.shibas.org/docs/Shiba_Brochure_col or2.pdf

Please do NOT purchase pet store (puppy mill) puppies! All they care about is money and not about proprly testing the parents of the pups for genetic defects. Do your research to locate reputable breeders in your area!

Likewise, do NOT buy puppies over the internet! No reputable breeder will ever advertise pups/dogs for sale on the internet (this includes streaming sites). You should be able to visit the breeder to see the conditions of the pups/dogs and get a chance to bond with the pups before you decide on whether or not they are right for you. If the breeder doesn't allow you to visit beware, it's likely a puppy mill.

Do note, that most reputable breeders have waiting lists prior to a litter being born. Once you have located a breeder you feel good about ask to be placed on the waiting list.

Another option would be to consider adopting a rescue Shiba. Go to this link to view rescues across the country or to make a donation:

We are so very happy for Kika and her new family. Congratulations!!!!!

So, today the Mom got us dressed up in our coats to go to the park. Burt and I love going to Pasteur Park 'cuz we get TWO things we love to do--a ride in the Jeep AND a walk in the park. But last night the Mom had to park down the street from our house. (The new Garage Door is coming Monday--woohoo). She got into a really small parking space, but ended up a bit from the curb.

Burt and I got to the Jeep and the Mom opened the door. I jumped up, missed the folded down seat, and ended up with my paws in the gutter, ankle deep in melting snow. NOT FUN!!! The Mom kept saying up, Up, UP... but I kept saying no, No, NO!!! And Burt took my lead--no, No, NO!!!

So, the Mom lifted each of us up and put us in the Jeep. (Well, it was more like she picked us up, fell against the side of the Jeep and pitched us through the door opening). I think it's time we invested in a RAMP, don't you?

Hey, everypup (especially those living in the Midwest--Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan) help me out here. Seems the Mom has lost her frickin' mind! Just when I've gotten use to sharing my space with Burt (NOT), the Mom has begun floatin' the idea of adopting a Greyhound from the now shuttered Dairyland Greyhound Race Track in Kenosha, Wisconsin!!!! She heard there are HUNDREDS of dogs of all ages looking for furever homes.

Head on over to The Chgo Crew's BlackPearl Dogs page http://www.dogster.com/dogs/1084910
and check out how you can adopt a retired racer AND make sure there are NO Greyhounds left for the Mom to adopt!

Thanks loads!

This cold is NUTS, I tell ya... simply NUTS!!!! Right now it's ZERO at the lake downtown where the Mom is at work. And out by us, by Midway Airport, NOAA says it's currently FOUR DEGREES with a wind chill of MINUS ELEVEN!!!!! YOWZA!

Is it any wonder that I started picking my paws up high during our walk this afternoon? The Dad couldn't figure out why I was doing it. He checked my paws and found no snow or ice. He rubbed my paws on his pants leg (whatta guy) and we walked a bit more. I started picking my paws up high again. He checked again. Still no ice or snow.

NEWS FLASH, Dad: It's COLD!!! I was picking up my paws because they were COLD!!! Duoh!

The Mom is going to order us some Mushers Secret paw wax from the Drs. Foster & Smith's website. Many of our Dogster pals have used it with a lot of success. Hope it helps against the cold. I AM a delicate little diva, you know. ;D

Really, really, REALLY love it! The Dad and the Mom were spending a quiet New Year's at home. The Dad was watching his Masterpiece Theatre Sherlock Holmes dvds, and the Mom was on Dogster (of course). The big screen tv is next to the Mom's desk, so at least they were both in the same room... BOL

The Dad was eating these huge Shrimp he'd bought at Costco. Burt and I were doing our best begging, but the Dad hadn't budged. Then, the Dad asked the Mom those magic words "Can they have Shrimp?" The Mom said, "I don't know, but I'm on-lline so I'll check." Some Googling later, the Mom said "Yes, small amounts without any shell or tail".

Nom, nom, nom, nom... WOW, Shrimp is GREAT!!!!! Happy, happy New Year to all!!!

Well, I can't say I'm particularly happy with the newest development here at home. Seems the Burt is feeling more comfortable here. Seems the Burt is feeling more confident. Seems the Burt is feeling a bit more assertive.

Yesterday and today, when the Mom had the Burt and me Sit, Paw, Down for treats, the Burt made a move to shut me out from the treats!!!!!!!!! When the Mom says Sit, we both sit. When the Mom says Paw, we both give her paw, one paw on her hand, the other paw on her arm (she thinks it's kind of cute, and has been meaning to videotape it for Dogster).

But yesterday and today, when the Mom said Down, the Burt laid down IN FRONT OF ME!!! Between me and the TREATS!!!! The NERVE of some pups! The Mom just laughs and hands me the treat over the Burt's back. She and the Dad think this is just a WONDERFUL development!!! That's NOT the word I'd use...

So, 'tis the Season to GIVE. Give to reputable shelters/rescues. But if you can't give financially, how about donating another precious commodity--your unused stuff? Contact shelters/rescues and ask about their "Wish List". Many times shelters/rescues are looking for items that you may have around the home. Here's AN EXAMPLE--the Wish List from my and Burt's Shelter, the Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Indiana:

Items Needed:

13 and 55 Gallon Trash Bags
Lysol/Disinfectant Wipes
Windex and refills
Brooms/Dustpans
Bleach
Laundry Detergant
Large Towels
Blankets
Paper Towels
Powder-Free Latex Gloves
Hand Sanitizer
Mop Replacement Heads (large stringy kind)

6-Foot Nylon or Leather Leashes & Collars
Stretch and Scratch cat execise cage attachment
Double Dish Plastic Puppy Bowls
Cat & Dog Shampoo (regular, flea & tick)
Bagged Timothy Hay (for Rabbits)
One Touch Ultra Test Strips
Cat Condos
Large Dog Crates
Kongs/Dog Toys/Cat Toys
Pet Beds
Kuranda Dog Beds

Rabbit & Guinea Pig Food
KMR (Kitten Formula)
Esbilac (Puppy Formula)

Postage Stamps
Gift Cards (Petsmart, Walmart, Meijer, Target, Office Max, Staples, Petco, etc.)
Gas Cards for Animal Transport Vehicle
20lb. Copier Paper (colored and white)
Card Stock Paper (colored and white)
dry erase markers

####

So, look around your house. Look in the closets. In the basement. In the attic. In the garage. You may have many unused, unneeded items that your local shelter/rescue would welcome with open paws (plus it would declutter your house and add to the positive Fung Shui). :D

...one Pain in the Hynie Adopted Brother!!!!!!!

No, not really, but a Queen of All Things can wish, can't she? Today we drove to Indiana so ol' Blabbermouth Burt could see Dr. M and get some booster shots. When we walked in we saw a Lady and two children by the front door taking donations for the Humane Society Calumet Area, the shelter Burt and I came from.

Seems this Family almost adopted Blabbermouth Burt!!!!! How about THAT for a small world??? The Lady told the Mom and the Dad that she had met Burt at the shelter a couple of weeks before he was adopted by us. She came back in to put in an application to adopt Blabbermouth Burt, but our application was already pending!!! We're soooooooo lucky... NOT! ;o

The two children were excited to see Burt again and tried to pet on him. Burt kept cringing each time. Instead of taking Burt, they adopted a smaller Lab mix that they named Shadow. Shadow seemed to enjoy a lot of attention. Shadow is a better fit for them than Blabbermouth Burt... mores the pity...

The reason I'd give Blabbermouth Burt away FREE TO A GOOD HOME? It was such a commotion when we first got there, and we HADN'T had a walk yet... and it had been a LONG drive... I had a small "accident" of the solid kind on the rug right inside PetSmart's doors. And Blabbermouth Burt had to tell EVERYONE who reads his diary about it, as well as all of our friends in the Mitey Mitey Buh-ens Party forum... sheeeeeesh... can a black dog get any redder?

Yesterday at class Trixie the Trainer and the Dad made such a big deal about how well Burt did on the Hide 'n Seek-Come Burt, Come game. They worked at it for almost 30 minutes. The Dad was a good sport about it all.

When it was my turn, well, let's just say I approached the whole thing a little more laid-back than my brother Burt. He was so excited. He was almost towing Trixie through the store looking for the Dad. I just couldn't see the point of running around.

I knew the Dad wouldn't leave without me and the Mom was still sitting down resting her bad leg. No need to rush. We weren't goin' ANYWHERE... so I took it at a leisurely stroll. BOL

Well, Burt was still so full of himself when we got home, I decided to remind him that I was Queen of ALL Things!! That night before we went to bed I did my best "Alpha Dog" snap and snarl and put Burt in his place! The way the Dad reacted, you'd think I tried to HURT my little brother. Trust me, Dad, I was just bein' a dog...

It lasted through THREE Golden Retrievers, an English Bulldog, a Whippet-mix, a Flat-coated Retriever, a Lab-mix, three cats and four foster litters of kittens!!!!!!!!! Not bad, really...

So, which Dyson Animal upright do you like and why? We have been debating the pros and pros ;) of the DC25 Ball and the DC28 Airmuscle. The Mom can finally get her Purple Animal (did I mention purple is her FAVORITE color even though it makes her look GREEN when she wears it? )

Please pawmail me if you have any suggestions...

See, I was at the end of my 15' retractable leash, leaving a little "present" on the park grass for the Mom to pick up. Burt was standing next to the Mom, waiting. quitely. P a t i e n t l y. For once. Until he saw the SQUIRREL!!!!!

Burt lit out after that squirrel. Usually, the Mom runs after him, and I follow along. So when Burt hits the end of his leash, the Mom's forward momentum makes it no big deal. But today she was standing still waiting for me to finish. So, when Burt hit the end of his leash... BAM!!!!! Down the Mom went. Luckily, on the grass, not on the paved path.

The Mom dropped our leashes on the way down so she could break her fall with her hands. The leashes retracted, right into me and Burt. Good thing, that. It startled Burt and stopped him right in his tracks!

The Mom was on the ground saying "come, Burt, come". Every time Burt walked toward her, the leash banged into his side and he'd stop. She'd say "come, Burt, come" and he'd start toward her again. Then "bang" and Burt would stop again. This went on a couple of more times before he finally made it back to the Mom. I, of course, came back to the Mom right away. I've been paying attention to our trainer, Trixie, unlike some dogs I could mention...

Poor Mom. She had to stay home from work and ice her knee. And tomorrow is her birthday! Great present, Burt... a fat knee and a cane--the present that just keeps on giving! Sheeeeesh...

So Burt and I have been going to training class at PetsMart. Every Sunday afternoon. For an hour. With our trainer, Trixie ;) Last week was unbelievable. The Mom and the Dad brought this thing called a "coupler". I heard them tell Trixie that they hadn't used it in nine years--since Perky went to the Bridge. Seems they would "couple" Remo and Perky together to slow Remo down on their walks.

Trixie had the big idea to "couple" my brother Burt's harness to my harness so he would feel more secure with me right next to him. I tell ya, what a pain in the back!!! Trixie would say "come Dixie", and me, being the star that I am, would immediately try to come. But this 50 lb furry weight of a brother wouldn't move. I had to drag him several feet until he got the idea and got off his butt.

When he got the idea though, there was no stoppin' him. He dragged me ALL OVER! Up and down the aisles. Quick turns. Plowing through crowds. Careening around corners. Bouncing off displays. He was UNSTOPPABLE! And they thought this was a GOOD idea???

Ok, so my goofy brother Burt is a big chicken. He likes to ride on the front floor of the Jeep where the passenger sits. He misses seeing all the sights as we drive around. His loss--my gain. That way I have the entire back of the Jeep to myself. Works for me!

So, today after our walk at the park, the Mom drove to the grocery store. She needed to run in real quick and buy us some skinless, boneless chicken breast. (we are soooooooo spoiled :D ) When the Mom came out of the store she saw that the Jeep's tailights were on. She didn't remember leaving the lights on. When the Mom got to the car and opened the door she found Burt on the DRIVER's side floor underneath the steering wheel. He had his big bootay up against the brake pedal!!!! Silly Burt. The Mom said we were lucky Burt didn't flood the engine...

So today the Mom got up and found it was raining. But not hard rain. So she said we could still go to the park if we wore our coats. Great! Danced around and made a pain of myself while the Mom tried to put my coat on me. Finally got Burt and I dressed and loaded up in the Jeep. Off we went.

Got to my park. Jumped out of the Jeep and heard THUMP THUMP THUMP DA-BUMP, BUMPITY THUMP THUMP!!! Now, you all know I am NOT a fan of loud noises like thunder, fireworks, gunshots. What was at the other end of the block rounding the corner? A PARADE!!! With DRUMS!!!! And cars with High School football players hanging out of the windows BLOWING THEIR HORNS!!!!! And kids carrying big banners. And lots of hoopin' and hollerin'.

Well, after yesterday's excitement, the Mom's decided to get a security fence. More and more homeowners are getting them in our neighborhood. We have sidewalks and a parkway here in Chicago (you can see our setup in some of the pictures on our pages--there is a pic of WINston that shows our neighbor's fence).

Neighbors put up a 6' decorative iron or steel fence right at the edge of the sidewalk--the sidewalk and the parkway remain as is, but then the area from the sidewalk to the house is enclosed in a fence that has a key-locked gate. The mailbox is attached or is built into the fence next to the gate.

No more solicitors coming up the walk, Church people knocking on your door at 8 a.m. trying to convert you (the Mom works 2nd shift, and is trying to sleep, thank you very much), pizza flyers taped to the door or mailmen encroaching on MY turf! That way, if we burst out of the house before the Mom is ready, we'll be safely contained. Costs a little money, but cheaper than a lawsuit.

...so he pepper-sprayed me. It wasn't my fault. The Mom takes Burt and I to the park every afternoon before she leaves for work. The park we go to now is about a mile from our house. So we drive in the Jeep. Usually the Mom unlocks the Jeep while we're still in the house then opens the screen door and we run right to it and hop in.

Well. Yesterday the Mom was "having words" with the Boy and not paying attention. She unlocked the Jeep with the remote and then opened the screen door WITHOUT LOOKING OUTSIDE!!! BAD MOMMY!!!! Burt and I blasted out and the mailman was coming up our walk!!!!!!!!!!! Burt froze on the porch in fear and I, of course, charged the mailman barking my head off! So, he sprayed me. Right in the eye. It was NOT fun.

The Boy pulled me back inside while the Mom tried to apologize to the mailman. He wasn't having any part of her apology and was quite nasty to the Mom. He told her he saw her WALKING us all the time without a leash. The Mom NEVER walks us without a leash, but she is guilty of getting us in and out of the car without one. Never again though. Never, ever, EVER again.

I didn't bite the mailman. I just scared him. But he made the Mom cry. Maybe I should have nibbled on him...just a little.

I'm trying to be nice to my "little brother". But he really knows how to push my buttons. Burt is climbing up onto the Dad's ottoman in front of Dad's chair. Ok. Yes. I know. I'm a Momma's Girl. But I still need special attention from the Dad too. Yesterday the Mom was petting me on the couch and the Dad was petting Burt on the ottoman.
He's a BlackPearl, just like me. In fact, the Mom and the Dad thought the picture on Petfinder was a picture of me. But it wasn't me, it was Burt. We both came from the Humane Society Calumet Area shelter in Munster, Indiana. Burt was born at the shelter, on WINston XXLP's 9th Birthday! How about that for a connection to The Chicago Crew? Burt spent three years with his first family. They returned him in June. I met Burt on Sunday, and yesterday Burt came home with us. Now he's ours and he isn't going anywhere! He has a Dogster page already, #1048888.

Well, last night was ok. Burt was a good boy, but then he tried to come into the bedroom to sleep with the Dad, the Mom and me. We are like three spoons in the bed. But it's a queen size bed. There is NO ROOM for Burt. So I let him know. Just a small grrrrrr. And then I got yelled at. What's up with that?

One year ago my pawrents adopted me, a stray--not claimed, from the Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Indiana. Back in the beginning of February 2008, in the dead of a Midwest winter night, I was dropped off after hours outside of the shelter by person(s) unknown. I spent over six months at the shelter, and slowly learned to trust people again. Then, on August 26th, the lady that came to see me three days earlier came back and took me to my Forever Home!

So, after one year, I am still a "work in progress". But very, very, very happy. And very, very, very loved. What more can a pup ask for? National Dog Day AND my Gotcha Day! Let's PAWTY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wooooooooooooooo arrrrrooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my oh my...this is gonna be really hard on the Mom and the Dad. I have VERY expressive puppy-dog eyes and have the art of begging a bite down to a SCIENCE! The Dad especially likes to sneak me bits of whatever he's eating/making. When the Mom told him about no people-food he said "we're gonna have to eat in the bedroom with the door closed!!!"

On the way home from Dr. Mulling's, the Mom and I went through the Drive Thru. Even though we were hungry all she got was a soda. The Mom laughed when I started nosing around looking for the fast food bag. I KNOW what Drive Thru means!!! Or meant...

I also went home with some Remicin for my ears as I have yeast and bacteria way down in the canals (which is a new development). And I gained 1 pound, but Dr. M put down that I was 5 to 10 lbs overweight!!!! The nerve...

No treats or people food for six weeks???? I'm gonna waste away. :(

...and I'm surprised that 60 Minutes doesn't realize it! This just in:

(CBS) Former pro-football star Michael Vick speaks to CBS Sports NFL Today Anchor James Brown on 60 Minutes in his first interview since he admitted two years ago to running a dogfighting ring - a crime that landed him in federal prison for 18 months and got him suspended from the NFL.

The interview, conducted Monday, Aug. 10 in Virginia, will be broadcast on 60 Minutes this Sunday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

The ex-Atlanta Falcon's quarterback was conditionally re-instated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on July 27, a week after he was released from federal custody. If a team is interested in him, Vick could be playing again in a regular league game by the sixth week of the NFL season.

The segment will also include interviews with Wayne Pacelle, head of the Humane Society of the U.S., the country's largest organization dedicated to the protection of animals. Tony Dungy, the former NFL coach who will be a special advisor to Vick, will also be interviewed.

####

Again, this is a con by Vick and his handlers to get him back into the NFL--to get the gravy train rolling again. When will the national media realize this? Again, HSUS, and now 60 Minutes, loses all credibility with me by giving this "animal" a forum.

...instead of that soulless, morally bankrupt Vick? If the HSUS needs an NFL star to reach out to children that are exposed to dogfighting in their daily lives, why wouldn’t you choose someone who can set a GOOD example through his past and present actions?

Jarrod Cooper of the Oakland Raiders and other Raiders players are helping fund a initiative called “Code 597,” after the penal code violation for animal abuse. The goal is to educate the public on better care and to fund dog shelters.

Cooper volunteers almost daily at a shelter. And he's worked with some of the Vick dogs rescued by Bad Rap. Check out this picture of Jarrod and his buddy Hector (a former vick dog) :

We have taken vacation days from work, traveled by train and paid for hotel rooms to participated in HSUS Humane Legislation Day at our state capital. We have supported the HSUS with our time and our money. We have defended the HSUS when people sought to lump them in with radical animal rights groups like PETA. We will no longer do ANY of this, and will boycott any and ALL NFL sponsors if Vick plays.

I was saddened, appalled, horrified, sickened to read that some Dogsters are upset that a family that we held a fundraiser for took a pre-paid, pre-arranged vacation. That some of the Dogsters that contributed toward saving a life now feel "betrayed". And have actually dropped this family as pals just when they need the continued support of this community.

I don't think people can really, really understand what it's like to take care of a cherished family member (human OR animal) that has a potentially life-ending illness/disease. I've done both, unfortunately, many times. HoneyBunny. Remo the Red. LuckyLucy. Perky. Harry. WINston XXLP. I know that if I could have gotten away to forget it all for even half an HOUR it would have been priceless!

I pray that those casting stones never, ever have to deal with such illness/disease. But, at the same time, I think that until they do they won't understand just how wrong they are. My love and support go out to Meaty and family.

Teddy, my BlackPearl friend out in California, has left this Earth so very suddenly. He had successful surgery on his leg, but died afterward from heart failure. How horrific and unbelievably sad.

Some of you remember sweet Layla, who was with Bob and Pita for too short a time. After she left for the Bridge, Bob opened his heart and home to a fuzzy teddy-bear of a rescue dog named Chopper. Chopper soon became Teddy, and helped pull Bob and Pita out of their sadness, as I helped my Mom and Dad after the Crew went to the Bridge last summer.

This is so distressing, so unbelievable, so heart-wrenching. I wish we could fly to Cali and just hold them both so close. Please stop by Teddy's page and leave some love and support for Bob and Pita. Teddy, aka Chopper, Dogster #966024.

...blazes WAS that??? I was out walking with the Mom late last night, patrolling with my super-sniffer. When I walk, I sniff. EVERYTHING. Each thing for a very, very, VERY long time. I totally immerse my nose into bushes, plants, grass, treebark, planters, flowerbeds, water meters, etc. This is probably why they're treating my muzzle for contact acne ;)

So... I'm smelling over by the crabby people's house (don't let your dog on my lawn--we try to keep it nice---grrrrrr, excuse me, but the parkway belongs to the city, and we always pick up after ourselves, thank you very much!) . They have a water cutoff that sticks up out of their lawn. Lots of dogs leave messages on it. Sniff... sniff... sniff...

The Mom was watching me and watching the neighborhood at the same time (when you're out walking the Chicago streets at 2am it pays to be alert). She turned back to me just as I put my cold, wet nose to the small access panel on the bottom of the streetlight pole. YELP! (translation... OUCH!!!!!) I jumped back about three feet, gave the lightpole a W__I__D__E berth, and went back to sniffing the next tree. The Mom figures I must have gotten a shock--the wires inside the lightpole must have been touching the access cover.

Now, I've heard the urban legends of boy dogs getting zapped if they peeps on lightpoles. Never thought I could get a shock by just sniffin'... but, then again, I HAD to touch my nose to the plate... A block later I was back trying to sniff lightpoles. This time the Mom didn't let me get close enough to touch. Did I learn a lesson getting zapped? Nope. :D

we ALL scream for ICE CREAM!!!!

One of my newest BlackPearl pals, Metta (Dogster #356996), has Ice Cream tagged me! What a great game of tag! You have to write what kind of ice cream you'd be and why, and then tag 5 other Dogsters.

If I was ice cream, I'd be Breyer's Snickers ice cream. Smooth creamy vanilla ice cream (like most black pearls--ordinary, but so extraordinary if you take the time to appreciate us) with swirls of caramel (like the color of my eyes) and bits of chocolate covered salted peanuts (like my personality--salty but sweet too).

I want to take some time to figure out who to tag--don't want to pick someone who's been tagged and tagged and tagged again! (I vote that for all future games of tag on Dogster we include the line "tag ___ (#) of Dogsters that haven't already been tagged". So I'll get back to you soon...

p.s. aren't you hungry right now for some Ice Cream? We have a 24-hr Jewel food store just 5 minutes from our house... hmmmmmmmmmmm... hey, fire up the Jeep!

It's suppose to rain on and off all day today, tomorrow and Monday here in Chicago. So, when the Mom got home from the newspaper this morning at 4:30 a.m. she took me out for a quick walk. Usually there's nobody out that late but us. The Mom carries the warning siren Flicka's Mom sent us, and a short, thick stick that the Brother made from a tree branch for the Mom to carry, just in case. No worries here.

When we got about a block from home, a man parked his car up ahead of us. As he started to walk toward us he acted pretty drunk. The Mom said "watchhim, watchhim, watchhim" real low and quiet like. I went into my cattledog walk/crouch as we continued walking toward him. The Mom kept saying "watchhim" and I watched him BIG TIME! I didn't take my eye off him as he passed us. "Good girl, Dixie, Good Girl!"

The Mom kept walking. Suddenly she realized my Flexi-tape leash was extended all the way out. I had stopped walking and had turned around so I could to watch the man until he went into his house. Still in my best "cattledog" crouch. Just in case...

Not too bad for a scaredy-pup from a shelter, eh?

DaisyMae CGC, #439979, a super-sweet Dogster and long-time pal of the Chicago Crew, posted a very informative, thought-provoking, prick-your-conscience (we hope) diary entry. She graciously gave me permission to cross-post here:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is from my Care2 site and it made us stop and think. Decided to share with everyone :))))
Flo is a doe-eyed 10 year-old Basset hound mix that was sent to the animal shelter when her owner couldn’t return home after being hospitalized. The little dog, who is almost deaf, was terrified to be in a cage at a shelter with so many other animals and all of the commotion.
Josie is a serious looking senior Wheaton terrier mix whose owners tied a pretty bow around her neck and dropped her off at a shelter in Northern California.
And when a tiny silver-haired Shih Tzu named Jennifer got too old, her family brought her to the shelter to be euthanized.
This is how life turns out for thousands of loyal older dogs. The main reason senior dogs are relinquished to shelters seems to be illness. Either the owner becomes too sick or passes away or the dogs develop an illness and owners can’t afford to pay for the medical care or choose not to get help.
Prospects are pretty grim if you’re an unwanted senior canine. Shelter workers see the tragedy every day as older dogs with wonderful dispositions are tossed aside. And once they get to an overcrowded public shelter with limited resources they are “practically written off” as un-adoptable.
In addition to being hard to re-home, senior dogs have special health risks when they’re exposed to a shelter environment. They’re more susceptible to kennel cough, their arthritic bones get worse as they sit on concrete floors and the overall stress of living in a shelter can worsen any pre-existing illness. For most old dogs the shelter is where they spend their last days before being euthanized.
However, in the last couple of years some animal advocates who are touched by these sad circumstances are coming to the aid of senior canines.
Sherri Franklin is one of these advocates. With a distinguished career in animal rescue she began a non-profit organization in 2007 for older dogs, called Muttville. The group is located in San Francisco. Their website says this about their goals:
“Muttville’s mission is to change the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs and to create better lives for them through rescue, foster and hospice. We reach out to senior and special needs rescue dogs; find suitable homes for those dogs that are adoptable; and offer end of life care for those that are not.”
The organization is successfully making the last few years of unwanted senior dogs peaceful and happy.
In other parts of the country, The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs and Old Dog Haven are also saving the lives of seniors that have been cast aside. Both organizations have become experts in getting older dogs ready for new homes. They provide an extensive medical workup for each animal so they are in the tip top condition and they use the internet for finding new homes.
Because most of their budgets are used for medical care another organization called Grey Muzzle was started to help. They give grant money to rescue groups that specialize in working with senior dogs.
And some animal shelters like Sacramento SPCA have started programs to meet the special needs of old dogs. They provide cots to get the dogs off the floor and they do a dental and blood work-up so they can determine any medical problems. The group also waves the adoption fee so senior dogs have a better chance of getting a new home.
There are many specific reasons why people avoid adopting an older pet, but the basic theme is, ¯There‘re so many dogs available, why choose one with something that looks like a big problem, or looks ugly, or takes a lot of effort?
The Senior Dogs Project also finds homes for older dogs. They list these 10 reasons why people should consider adopting a senior canine:
1. Most are housetrained.
2. They are past chewing inappropriate items.
3. They are focused so they quick learners.
4. Old dog know the meaning of “No.”
5. Settle in with a pack easier.
6. Give lots of love.
7. WYSIWYG – What you see is what you get in personality and behavior.
8. Instant companionship.
9. Owners get more time for themselves because seniors are less demanding.
10. A good night’s sleep – old dogs need their rest.
It’s a sad commentary when people place less value on anything or anyone that is old. Sure, brand new puppies are wildly adorable, but it is a heartwarming experience when an older dog looks you in the eye and crawls into your lap and falls asleep.
The Dad asked the Mom what she wanted to do for Mother's Day tomorrow.  The Mom didn't want to hang around the house waiting for her #1 son NOT to come over (grrrrrr).  The Dad asked her if she wanted to go out to a restaurant to eat, or out to a movie?  The Mom said, "no, let's do something that we can do with Dixie".  :D
So, the plan is a long drive to the southern suburbs to drop off some new baby gifts.  The Dad, the Mom and me.  If the weather is good, a short hike in one of the area's many forrest preserves.  Then we are all going to go to eat.  At the Mom's favorite drive-in.  Sonic.  We don't have a Sonic by us (they won't build one in the big bad city of Chicago--grrrrrrr) so it will be a nice long car ride for me.  And then Sonic shakes for the Mom and the Dad, and burgers for EVERYONE!   Woooooohoooooo. What a great idea, don't cha think?  Mother's Day burgers...
The Mom and I got up early and left at 7:45 am for the Anti-Cruelty Society's Bark In The Park 3.1 mile walk at Chicago's lakefront. The Mom wasn't on her best game--had about 1 1/2 hrs of sleep, 'cuz Friday night is her 8pm-4am at the newspaper. And, of course, she didn't get out of there until 4:20!!
It was really beautiful weather. I took turns jumpin' around and smilin', then circlin' the Mom, then walkin' ahead of her, then trailin' behind her. For 3.1 miles.  I was NOT allowed to smell all the smells left by the 3,500 dogs. THAT did not make me happy.
The Mom and I took an "official" picture for a $10 donation. The Dad will scan it in to the computer when he goes to work Tuesday. (Monday is another dreaded furlough day--day off without pay).  The Mom and I matched. Instead of wearing the event t-shirt, the Mom wore her orange ASPCA We Are Their Voice t-shirt, and I sported my matching orange ASPCA bandanna. I tell ya, black dog and bright orange bandanna is quite striking, if I do say so myself!   The video the Mom shot wasn't too good, but we'll try and get it up on my page soon.
After a short nap back home, the Mom took a 5hour Energy shot and then went off to work 6pm-2am tonight. I'm not sure what happens after 5 hrs... I am spending the evening with the Dad and relaxing after my exciting morning of sniffin', meetin' and greetin'.  There are sure a lot of dogs in Chicago!
While sitting at the computer trying to come up with something for Earth Day, my eyes fell upon our latest adopted 4-legged daughter, Dixie BlackPearl.  I thought about how she saved our hearts from being broken apart when we lost all three of the Chicago Crew last year over the course of three short months.  Gazing upon that furry bundle of love, the perfect motto came to me:
Recycle Love--Adopt!
I realized that motto worked three-fold:  for Earth Day on April 22nd, for the month of April during which we "Go Orange for the ASPCA", and for the start of  The 4th Annual ADOPT Stroll and Contest.
####
From Gibbon's Forum announcement:
"It’s time for The 4th Annual Adopt Stroll and Contest! Originally created by my pal, Lucia, we have kept the contest rockin' and rollin’ and every year gets more exciting! The deets are below!
What is the mission of the contest
By our own dogster pals and members sharing pictures and stories of how an adopted pup has brought joy, love and fulfillment to one’s life, we hope to inspire, motivate and encourage others to consider adoption when adding a member to their family. So many beautiful pups wait in cages and foster homes throughout the country. If this contest can change just one person’s mind to adopt, it will be a true accomplishment!"
####
There are currently 2,621 dogs on Dogster awaiting forever homes.  They have a good chance here...out of the 479,396 dogs currently on Dogster, 95,916--a little over 20%--are rescues.  But the sheer number of dogs that will not be saved in time in this country alone is staggering.   Over 4 million animals--that's FOUR MILLION--are killed each year simply because too few people adopt from shelters or rescue groups.
It takes a very special person to work in the field of dog rescue.  I tried, as a shelter volunteer doing weekly off-site adoption events and as a transport driver for a breed rescue.  What I experienced nearly killed my soul.
Now we help by donating whenever we can and by participating in fund raisers like Bark In the Park, benefitting the Anti-Cruelty Society, the PAWS Walk/Run For Their Lives, benefitting  the PAWS Animal Shelter, and Paws In The Park, benefitting the Humane Society Calumet Area.
And we recycle love--we adopt.  PerkyPuppyPrincessGirl was from a small no-kill shelter.  Remo the Red was from a puppy mill.  HoneyBunny was from a kill-shelter that accepts dogs from 53 municipalities around Chicago--municipalities that don't have, and won't build, their own shelter.  WINston came into our lives while we were picking up his Golden roommate to transport across Illinois into breed rescue.  LuckyLucy was another transport that we fostered "just for overnight"--we became "failed fosters" when she never left.  And lastly, but certainly not THE last...the bundle of love lying next to me...our sweet BlackPearl, Dixie, adopted from the shelter in Indiana that our wonderful vet, Dr. Trudy Mullings, volunteers at.
Please join us and help chip away at that 4 million...
Recycle Love--Adopt!
So, I told you about how I've had to school the Dad that sitting on the couch by the Mom is MY spot.  Not his.  So, the other day I'm taking a nap on my chair and I open my eyes only to see the Dad leaning on the Mom.  Yup.  Sitting together AGAIN on the couch.
Now, getting up and climbing all over the Dad was a lot of work.  And apparently it had no effect.  What to do... what to do... what to do...
Got it!!  I looked at them with my big brown puppydog eyes.  I sighed.  A BIG sigh.  Then I hung my head totally off of the chair cushion.  Nose pointed to the ground.  Looking straight down.  And I waited.
Then I heard...
"Sweetie."  *twitch*  "DixieDawg".  *twitchtwitch*    "Baby".    *twitch*    "Dixie".   *twitchtwitch* "ChaChaChewie".    *twitch*  "DixieDoodle".    *twitch*    "Birdie".  The Mom and the Dad, both trying every nickname they know to get me to pick my head up.  I held strong.  It was hard.  My ears twitched back and forth.  So they knew I heard them.  But I wouldn't relent.
FINALLY they got the message.  The Dad said "oh, Dixie" and scratched my head as he went to sit back down in HIS chair.  And I didn't even have to get up.   Hmmm, it seems they're right.  Sometimes, less IS more!
Last night I was sleeping peacefully in my chair.  The Dad sitting on his chair; the Mom sitting on Winston's couch--both watching the magic picture box.  I wake up and see things have changed.  The Dad is now laying on the couch.  Using the Mom as a pillow.  I look at the Mom.  I look at the Dad.  I look at the Mom again.  Then I act.
I climb up, over the Dad's legs, onto the back cushions of the couch.  I like to perch up there, behind the Mom.  I usually rest my head on her shoulder.  But last night, I draped my body over the Dad's shoulder.  Then I sat up.  Then I laid down.  Then I sat up.  Then I laid down.  Slowly, surely, I maneuvered my body between the Dad and the Mom.  Finally, the Dad got the message and went back to his chair.  I stretched out on the Mom's lap and fell asleep.  Just so everyone understands--that's MY Mom!
Well, the Mom and I drove the 38 miles to Indiana to see Dr. Mullings this morning. For my semi-annual comprehensive exam and some SHOTS!  Only to find out when we got there that Dr. M had called in sick! So..... we left! Woooooooo hooooooo!!!
Then the Mom and I went to Burger King for breakfast. I had a sausage biscuit... num num num num...
We had some spare time, and seeing as how we were all the way over in Indiana the Mom decided to go visit the Humane Society-Calumet Area shelter where I lived for six months. I was very, very nervous when the people came to the reception area to see me. I crawled under the chairs! I thought they were going to take me away--back to the cage with the barkin' dogs...
The Mom and I went outside with this lady called Alex. I think I remembered her, but I wasn't too sure... it's been 7 months since I lived there. Then the Mom and I came back in and sat together until the Gift Shop opened. The Mom bought some soft treats and I showed the lady how I can give Paw and Sit UP for a nummy.
Got to say that I was very, very, VERY happy to get back in our Jeep and leave!  ;D
  Back in Illinois we stopped by the Nature Preserve for a quick sniff/walk.  A couple of more stops as the Mom ran some quick errands.  And now, I am Home!
Ok, what is with those Crazy Barking Dogs????  The ones who live right next to the Nature Preserve?  You know the ones I'm talkin' about... The spinning top Jack Russell, the stoic and silent chocolate Lab and black Lab.  I passed them by twice on Sunday with no big problem on my walk with the Mom and the Dad.
Yesterday was a different story.  Yesterday they were joined by some Instigators!  Two little barkin' dogs had joined the two Labs in their yard.  NOW the Labs weren't stoic and silent... they were CRAZED!   Bark!  Bark!  Bark!  Bark!  Bark! Bark!  Normally, I don't let this kind of thing bother me.  The Mom says "you're ok, Dixie, you're ok" and I usually am.  But yesterday those crazy barkers almost got me BIT!
I had met up earlier with a yellow Lab-mix on the path by the duck pond.  Sniff.  Sniff.  Wag.  Wag.  No problemo.  But then, as I was passing by the Nutso House of Barking Canines, the Lab-mix decides to buy into the whole "pack mentality" thing.  Suddenly she figures that, even though we met earlier and were fine, if the other dogs are barking at me there must be a problem with me.  I go in for a friendly sniff and she turns into CUJO!!!!!  Full mohawk of hair rising all the way down her back, fangs snapping, growling, mean scary bark... WHOA!!!!  I'm the same dog you meet 15 minutes ago.  I haven't changed!  Don't listen to those other dogs!  Don't fall for the Pack Mentality!
Today it got up to 55 in Chicago, sunny, no rain, so we went to the Nature Preserve.  It was the first time the Dad got to drive the new Jeep (the Mom was NOT impressed with his driving--I think ol' Dad is destined for the passenger seat)!
It was quite busy at the Nature Center, as it is the only park in the suburb of Oak Lawn that allows dogs (talk about discrimination)!  I met a Puggle named Marley and his Pug friend Bailey.  I met a real friendly Labradoodle named Grover.  I met a Beagle who was attached to a bike (grrrrrrrr... I still have some issues with the whole Bike thing, but after about the 10th bike passed me today I started ignoring them).   We passed by a Chihuahua and Pekingese-mix who were NOT friendly to dogs (what's up with that??).  Said hello to a very old Lab who had a nasty skin thing going on (poor guy).  Boy, you meet a lot of pups at the Nature Preserve--the only game in town!
I felt sorry for the two Labs and the Jack Russell who were stuck up in the yards we passed.  The Jack Russell had a 6 foot chain-link fence around his yard, but it looked like he could JUMP over it if he really tried.  He was spinning, and jumping, and circling and barking... You think he'd get tired after a while.  But Nooooooo, he just kept on...  I guess he must feel he has to protect his yard from all the pups walking by on the path below him.  I would be exhausted if I carried on like him!  The two Labs in the next yard just stood there and watched. I guess they figured the JR makes enough noise for all of them!
After a bit, it got a little TOO warm for me.  Sunny day + black coat = panting pup.    BOL.    The Mom said she is going to get me something called a "cool-danna" for the summer months.  She'd ask Samantha (our Master Groomer) to shave me, but the Mom knows what the answer will be... Whenever Golden owners ask Sam to shave their Goldens down, she says "you want a short-haired Retriever, you should have gotten a Lab".   And I DO have a glorious coat, if I do say so myself...
All in all, a very nice way to spend a Sunny Sunday afternoon.
Copy this diary entry, and paste it into your diary. Read and then delete my answers. Then you can fill in your own! We can get to know our pals better!! Have fun!! Then send a rosette or pawmail to 4 pals and ask them to post it in their diary!!!!
1. What color is your collar? burgundy red
2. What kind of food do you eat? Science Diet canned and dry
3. What are your favorite treats? They're all my favorite, but I especially like soft treats that are small in size, like Bil-Jac liver treats or the Beggin' Bits that Rocky sent me.
4. Do you have a Valentine or significant other?? Lucas, my double, asked me to be his Valentine
5. Do you get Table Scraps? The Mom says "no"; the Dad says "when the Mom's not lookin'"
6. What is your favorite toy? I just don't get the whole toy thing yet... it's been six months and the Mom and the Dad are still trying.  I get excited when the Dad bounces the tennis ball, but then I ignore it when he throws it...
7. When is your Birthday? I was abandoned outside of a shelter in the middle of the night, so they estimated my age and gave me the date of Feb. 10, 2003.
8. How many times a day do you get to eat?   Twice (officially)  ;)
9. Do you have a favorite color? Black Pearl  :D
10. Do you hope all your pals put this in their diary? Of Course!  (was that a trick question? )
I'm sending this to... haven't decided yet.  I want to check a couple of pages out, as I don't want to send to pups that have already played.
The Mom has been after the Dad NOT to feed me any people food.  The Mom is no fun.  All because she can't feel my ribs.  Hey, I don't go poking you in the side, do I? (on second thought, maybe I do when I'm laying in the Big Bed and feel a good sssstttttttrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttccccccchhhhhh coming on... hee hee).
So, anyway, yesterday I scored.  BIG time.  From the Mom, no less.  It wasn't people food, but it was treat after treat after treat after treat.  All I had to do was give the Mom my paw.  Give paw.  Here you go. Treat for Dixie. Num num num...
The Moms been pulling this "give paw" thing for the entire six months I've lived here.  But yesterday, I GAVE paw.  And got a treat.  Gave paw AGAIN.  Got another treat.   Showed the Dad.  Give Paw.  Paw given. Treat for Dixie.  Showed the Brother.  Another treat for Dixie.  Boy, if I knew it was so easy to train the Mom I would have given paw six months ago!
My wonderful Senka Park has lately been overrun by Thugs with sweet Pit Bulls that are no longer sweet... so very, very sad for those poor dogs.  And these DOPES (sorry, just calling it like I see it) don't even have the dogs on leash, and sometimes they don't even have a collar on!  Nothing to grab onto if they try and take a piece out of me  :(
So, yesterday the Mom and me took a ride in our Jeep  :)  out to the Nature Preserve in OakLawn (a suburb of Chicago).  The Nature Preserve is the ONLY park in OakLawn where you can walk a dog.    I really liked riding in the new Jeep.  The back windows roll ALL the way down, but the Mom won't do that--she leaves them up a bit for my "safety".  She also followed through on her threat.  The Mom installed a Cargo Net barrier behind the front seats so I can't jump up and ride "shotgun".  But that's ok, I still have the entire back of the Jeep in the cargo position to roam around in, complete with water bowl and dog bed!
Anyway, at the Nature Preserve.  It was one of HoneyBunny's favorite walks and LuckyLucy liked it too.  LL would have jumped in after the ducks and geese if they'd let her.  I have only been there once before, but I recognized it right away.   Woooooooo woooooooo arrrrroooooooooo wooooooooooo I yodeled as we pulled up.  (Mom is half-convinced I'm part Malamute the way I yodel).
We started our walk and right away met two really nice dogs.  Small.  On leash.  Sniff.  Sniff.  Polite.  No problems.  Continued walking.  Met two more dogs.  One was a pit bull.  It was lunging at me.  But not to kill me.  It was an 8-month old puppy named Roxie who wanted to play with me.
Continued the walk.  Met a few more nice dogs.  Then, a lady came by with a Pom.  As soon as she saw me, she grabbed the Pom up in her arms.  Before the Mom could tell her I was friendly to dogs and there was nothing to worry about, the Pom went BALISTIC!  Snarling and trying to jump down to get me!!!  The Mom just shook her head as they passed me, and I looked back at the Mom as if to say "What WAS that?!!!"
We got a new Dog-Mobile yesterday.  While I was at Sam's, the groomer's, having my Day of Beauty, the Mom was out signing her life away.  She came to pick me up in a new-to-us 2007 Jeep Liberty with all the bells and whistles.
The Jeep Liberty has back seats that cargo flat, so I have a lot of room to roam around in.  The Mom left the 1/3 split seat up so I wouldn't have as far to jump up into the vehicle.  After I was in and she took my leash off, the Mom folded the seat into the cargo position.  Then she closed the door. Took one step to the left and opened her door, only to find...
Me.  In the front passenger seat.  Smiling.  Tail wagging.  Didn't work, though... the Mom said "back seat, Dixie"!  She opened the lid on the center console to "block" me from coming up between the front seats.  And she drove home with her arm across the gap.  I pushed at her arm with my nose, but she wouldn't relent.  When we got home, the Mom got out of the car, folded the side mirror in, walked around the car only to find...
Me.  In the front seat again.  Still smiling.  Still wagging my tail.  It didn't work, though.  The Mom said "the dog barrier is going in this car tomorrow".  sigh...
So, the newspaper the Mom and the Dad work for ran an article about Black Dog Syndrome in Friday's paper (delete any spaces in the link and it'll work):
http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/1452145,CST-NWS-blackdog27.article
Today, a very nice man that the Mom works with on the weekends was talking to the Mom about it.  He's a news editor, and he and his wife are from Japan.  He told the Mom that his wife said the reason that the Japanese don't like black dogs in Japan is because they smell--they stink!
Wow!  Talk about a conversation killer.  The Mom didn't know what to say... all she could think to say was "well, Shiba Inu's are light colored.  Maybe because they show the dirt more than black dogs they get washed more than black dogs do in Japan."  He said, really?  Black dogs don't smell here?  The Mom said, "yes, black dogs don't smell here... I have a black dog and she doesn't smell".  (Thanks, Mom!)
When she told the Dad about this, he said the Mom should have said "all dogs smell... they have noses, right?" *insert rim shot*
Ok, so the other day the Dad and the Mom took me for a ride to PetSmart.  It was the day after my Gotcha Barkday.  We were almost there, stopped at a red light, when I started wooo wooing, chirping my chirp bark, and going in circles in the back of the Dog-mobile station wagon.  The Mom thought I was getting excited because I recognized that I was almost at PetSmart.
THEN the Mom saw me try to jump out the window!!!   She rolled it up right quick.  She couldn't believe I would try to jump out... but I really, really needed to get out of that car NOW!!!!
So, I had no choice but to poop in the car!  And not just poop... almost the Hershey Squirts!  The Mom pulled into a parking lot and got me out of the car while the Dad cleaned up.  They were pretty cool about the whole thing--they knew I tried to get outside first.
I've been having bad poopies on and off all week now.  The Dad has been adding rice to my food.  He tried adding pumpkin, but I wasn't digging that too much.  We thought we had everything back to normal, then I pooped out a small mucus-covered soft pile today.
Now they are talking FAST... what is this fast?  I heard the Mom tell the Dad they are going to fast me until tomorrow, and then try rice and hamburger.  Hey, I'm all for hamburger... that's one of my FAVS!!
But what's a "fast"?  My Spidey-senses are tingling... don't think I'm gonna like this "fast" thing...
They say it's your Birthday... na na na na NA na... It's MY Birthday too, yah...
I received this awesome PawMail this morning:
Dear Dixie BlackPearl,
Woof woof!
We want to wish you a very Happy Birthday full of love and joy and tail wagging. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate it with you!
Dixie BlackPearl will be profiled today with other birthday doggies on Dogster's special Birthday Stroll.
Since it's your birthday we want to give you something special, so we have given you 25 Dogster bones and one vote of 5 Paws! Dogster loves you!
Sincerely,
Your Friends at Dogster
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
See, I was dumped at the Humane Society Calumet Area shelter a year ago today, so the shelter people gave me February 10th as my "Gotcha Day".  They estimated last year that I was 5, so today I turn 6!  As the late, great Remo the Red would say "woooooooooooooooooo wooooooo!!!"
The Brother didn't do such a bad job on the walk.  He let me sniff when I wanted to sniff.  And he let me walk where I wanted to walk.
It is very, very cold outside. It's 7 degrees out now, going down to -12 below zero with windchill of -30 below. The Mom called the Dad at the job and told him about my "success" in the back yard this afternoon.  I think it gave him ideas.  When the Dad got home from "the job", he said "no walk tonight, Dixie". Hmmmmmm.
The Dad just called the Mom at work. To tell her about the "guilt trip" I'm giving him. What guilt trip? Just because I spin around and around every time he looks at me.  Just because I climb up on his ottoman and block the tv.  Just because I go to the picture window and sit looking out. Just because I jump up on the ottoman and put my paws on his chest.  Just because I keep running to the front door.  What guilt trip?
Update:  Just got back from a walk.  ;)
So, it's crazy cold here in Chicago.  The Mom and the Dad have been walking me.  Once in the afternoon and once at night. Every single day since I came to live with them in August.  Through heat and rain and fog and sleet and now through cold and snow.
But today there was no walk in the afternoon.  The Mom kept putting my jacket on me.  Then she'd let me out in the back yard.  I wouldn't do anything.  I don't do my business in the yard.  The Mom knows that.
This went on all afternoon.  Finally, the Mom let me out and I ran back to the alley gate.  Then I ran back to the house.  Then to the alley gate.  Then to the house. Back and forth.  Back and forth.
While I ran I looked at the drifts of snow on either side of the walk.  Big drifts.  Taller than me.  Suddenly I jumped off of the walk.  And into the snow in the middle of the yard!  Then I ran. Around and around and around.  In a big, big circle.  Until I had a nice path.  Then I stopped.  And squat.
You know, the Mom totally over-reacted.  When I came in she was yelling and cheering and telling me "good girl, Dixie" and "what a smart girl, Dixie".  It was just some poop.  It wasn't Gold!
Our dear friend Damon, http://www.dogster.com/dogs/766139, was diagnosed today as diabetic, with possibly Cushing's disease too.  He already has an enlarged spleen.  Damon is the pup that Arthur Furever Wiggling, http://www.dogster.com/dogs/457493, our bestest bulldog buddy angel, sent to his family after he went to the Bridge.
Pawrents: Pay attention to what your dog is doing!   We dogs are really, really good at fooling people into thinking we're ok.  Many times we conceal disease until the situation becomes acute.  Damon's pawrents caught on to something being wrong when Damon didn't want to eat his food.  He was still eating treats.  And he was drinking more water.  And he had put on weight.  Eagle-eyed pawrents... the BEST kind!
Symptoms of Diabetes:
The classic symptoms are increased water consumption and increased urination; weight loss despite a voracious appetite; and blindness due to cataract development. Dogs with diabetes can be underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese.
Symptoms of Cushing's:
Symptoms can be vague and varied and tend to appear gradually and progressively. It is thus easy to mistake Cushing's disease for normal aging. Additionally, many of the clinical symptoms are not unique to Cushing's and could reflect a number of other health concerns.
The most common symptoms include:
      • increased/excessive water consumption (polydipsia)
      • increased/excessive urination (polyuria)
      • urinary accidents in previously housetrained dogs
      • increased/excessive appetite (polyphagia)
      • appearance of food stealing/guarding, begging, trash dumping, etc.
      • sagging, bloated, pot-bellied appearance
      • weight gain or its appearance, due to fat redistribution
      • loss of muscle mass, giving the appearance of weight loss
      • bony, skull-like appearance of head
      • exercise intolerance, lethargy, general or hind-leg weakness
      • new reluctance to jump on furniture or people
      • excess panting, seeking cool surfaces to rest on
      • symmetrically thinning hair or baldness (alopecia) on torso
      • other coat changes like dullness, dryness
      • slow regrowth of hair after clipping
      • thin, wrinkled, fragile, and/or darkly pigmented skin
      • easily damaged/bruised skin that heals slowly
      • hard, calcified lumps in the skin (calcinosis cutis)
      • susceptibility to infections (especially skin and urinary)
      • diabetes, pancreatitis, seizures
New Year's Day was very, very, very cold.  The Mom and the Dad and I went to the park in the afternoon.  Noone was there.  So I got to go off-leash.  I did zoomies across the baseball field.  The Mom took video.  It's on my page.  It wasn't my best effort--I can run much faster.
It was nice at the park.  Until we were leaving.  We saw a beautiful, large snow white dove.  Lying on a gentle hill.  Just a few feet off the pathway.  Not moving.  It looked like it was sleeping.  The Mom said it must have froze to death.  Poor thing.
The Dad put a poop-picker-up bag on his hand.  He said he'd put the dove in the waste can.   So no children coming into the park would find it.  They would get upset if they did.  The Dad picked the dove up and then we saw what had really happened.  Someone had stabbed the beautiful dove.  Right in the chest.  You couldn't see any blood until you picked it up.  You just saw the snow-white back, wings, head... then when you turned it over...
The Mom got really mad.  The Dad got really mad.  I got mad because they were mad.  What's wrong with people!!!  If the person(s) who killed the dove were still around, I'd bite 'em!
This morning I stayed right next to The Mom.  She had the start of a very bad headache when she woke up.  It is called a Migraine.  When she opened her eyes she saw me.  I leaned over and licked her forehead.  Three licks.  I think it helped her headache.
Well, I know "STAY" really well.  The Mom and I were coming back from a nice romp in the park.  It was snowing, and blowing.  We have to go underneath the train tracks at the end of our block to go to and from the park.  It's called a "viaduct".   But, no one shovels/salts around the openings.  The snow had blown away to a fine covering over a big patch of ice.  The Mom slipped and fell straight back and smacked the back of her head on the concrete.  She dropped the flexi-leash, and I jumped back from her because I was startled when she hit the ground.  I almost jumped into the street, just a foot away, where cars were going back and forth under the viaduct.  She yelled, STAY, DIXIE, STAY, and I stayed!!  She laid there for a while and I waited right next to her.  Then she used me to help herself up.  I was a good girl.  I know Stay!
Has anyone played the new Dog Breed Photo Game? It uses Dogster photos, and you guess the breed from 5 choices. When you get to 1,000 points you earn 25 Zealies!!!
Everypup should give it a try, and try the Expert level. It really isn't THAT hard--many times you can guess the correct breed by knowing what the dog ISN'T. And after a few wrong answers, you quickly learn some of the new, exotic or rare breeds.  It's point and click--you pick from 5 possible answers and it sure passes the time!!!  (The Mom needs to brush up on the coonhound and mastiff breeds...)
Also stop by the other levels so you can appreciate all the different dogs on Dogster--we saw our bulldog pals Sarge and BabyGirl in the Beginner level.
Dixie BlackPearl was in 7th place the last time we looked--they have a "Leader Board" which shows the top ten Dogster scores, but you can also look at all the scores and see who else has been playing, and your score adds up every time you play.
Try it at
Every day when we come back from our late night walk, the Mom lets me off the leash.  Just a few houses away from ours.  Then we both run for the house.  Very fast.  I always win.  I have to wait up on the porch for the Mom.  She is slow.  I dance around in a circle.  And sing Woooo-arroooo-oooo!
Today the Big Dad took me to Senka Park.  The park where the Mom & I walk in the afternoon.  There is a very big fenced area.  Where people play football and soccer.  It was covered in snow.  The Big Dad took my leash off.  And I ran!  And ran!  Zoom!  Zoom!  Zoom!  The Big Dad would call "Dixie".  I would race back to him.  I would race past him very fast.  He is slow too, like the Lady.  We did this many, many times.  I ran around for a long time.  Then I started to sniff some trees and the Big Dad put my leash back on.  I like going to the park with the Big Dad.  We go Running!
The Lady and I walk most every night after she gets home from the "job".  Nighttime is a nice time to walk.  No barking dogs.  No grabby kids.  No scary men.  Just me, the Lady, and the BUNNIES!!!  I try to catch the bunnies but they are, as you know, wascally wabbits!  They are so very fast.  And they know all the places to hide.
Last night we rounded the corner.  What a SURPRISE!  Someone had planted a whole bunch of TREES!  Right where the Tastee freeze parking lot used to be.  Wow!  These must be some magic trees, to grow so fast. The Lady said they were Christmas Trees.  She stopped and talked to the Christmas Tree men about "wreathes".  I stood real quiet and didn't pull away.  I was a good girl, even though I was very nervous.
The Lady took a couple of pictures of me by the magic Christmas Trees.  And Sunday we are going to something called a "mall".  To see someone called "Santa Claus".  I will try not to be afraid of this Santa Claus.  Much.
10. We cannot clash with your furniture or clothing (and some of you actually worry about that).
9.  We cannot clash with any collar you might choose either!  Ditto for the bandanas; accessorize us!
8. Ease of vacuuming!  You can quickly spot the areas of most urgent need.
7. We hide the dirt well (doesn't mean we don't need that bath after a messy play but your guests won't be able to see it so quickly).
6. We make an excellent "backdrop" for a second, lighter colored dog (if you choose to have one).
5. Availability!!  We are available now at every shelter or rescue you can imagine, in every age bracket with no long waiting lists or difficult search.
4. No annoying queries of "exactly what kind of dog is that anyhow?"  People are content with "big black dog" and don't ask anymore questions.
3. EXCELLENT night walk protection.  The "bad guy" won't see us until it's too late!
2. Status symbol potential.  Black pearls are the most costly you know.....
and the number 1 reason to adopt a Black Dog
1. WE NEED YOU!
Thanks to Midwest Lab Rescue for this top ten list, which appeared in their Winter08 Newsletter as a side-bar to the story "Black Listed--the truth about BBD-Big Black Dogs (otherwise known as Black Dog Syndrome)"  www.midwestlabrescue.org
I've been tagged.  I guess it's a good thing to be tagged.  Means someone thinkin' about you.  Wants to know about you.  Bentley tagged me.  He was a special friend to the Chicago Crew.  Hope he will be my special friend too.  And Bubba Smalls tagged me.  Bubba lives in Illinois, just like me.  He is family to Tico el Bandito, a Chihuahua that was in the news because he got attacked by a Hawk!!!  Right in his own backyard!  Whew...
Anyway, here are 7 things about me.  This is hard because the Lady and the Big Man are just learnin' about me.
1. I was a trucker's dog.  In a big, big truck.  With 18 wheels.  Now I am not.
2. I chase bunnies.  Every day.  I never catch any.  Every day.
3. I do not do "toys".  I do not understand this "fetch".  But the Big Man keeps trying.
4. I like when the Big Man eats.  He always gives me some.
5. I race the Lady back to the house.  I always win.  She is slow.
6. I can sing wooooo-arroooo-oooo, and I do "zoomies".  I am happy here.
7. I miss the little fat dog.  Now I just live with a cat.  Jury is still out on the cat.
Now I will tag 7 other Dogsters.  I will try to tag those not tagged already. I do not know many Dogsters.  The Chicago Crew knew a lot of Dogsters.  I will tag some of them.  I tag:
Sully & Socks (two for one?) 752866
Lucas (my twin) 655535
Maxi the Golden Poet 490032
Mickey, Sammy & Bernadette's brother, 322533
Sheba, LuckyLucy's Mom 761843
Damon, Arthur's brother, 766139
and TrixieMae Marshmellow Ears, WINston's good pal, 313869
To the Post Office to mail something for Sully & Socks.  To PetsMart (where I pooped outside like a good girl).  To Kohls.  To CVS.  Then we came back home.  I sang when I saw our house. I ran up the steps (I always beat the lady to the door--she's slow) and sang some more.  When the lady let me in, I took off!  I ran through the house.  At top speed.  Jumping on and off the couch.  Through the house back to the kitchen.  Back through the hall to the front room and onto to couch.  Back through the hall toward the kitchen.  Where I almost knocked the lady over!  The lady said "Dixie, you have the Zoomies!"  Zoomies?  I don't know Zoomies.  I just know I'm Happy I'm Home!
Yesterday I went with the lady and the tall boy in the car.  We drove a long time.  All the way to the big lake.  Lake Michigan.  Then the tall boy got out of the car.  He had to go to one of those "job" things at something called McCormick Place.  Then the lady and I drove for a long time.  Stop.  Go.  Stop.  Go.  We were on "city streets" instead of the "expressway".  It took a long, long time.
Then we stopped.  I looked out the window and saw my park.  The BIG Senka Park right by my house.  I got so excited I started to sing!  Woooo-arrooo-oooo.  A chortle, high, singing bark, with lots of spins around in the back of the car.  Good thing there is a lot of room.  The lady laughed and said "Dixie, I didn't know you could sing!"  Sing, shming, let me out of the car!
Today we drove to the park again. I had a good long walk with lots of sniffs.  I like to kick my back legs out -- kick, kick, kick -- and make the dirt and grass fly!  I leave MY mark in MY park!  The lady says "oooo, tough girl, Dixie, you're a Tough girl!"  I leave my Mark!
Then we got in the car and went to a store.  I was a good girl.  I waited in the car.  Then the lady came out of the store with PIZZA!  I like pizza.  The lady and I had pizza in the car.  Then we drove home.  And when we got home.... Wooooo-arrooo-oooo!!  I started singing again!  I am happy.  I can Sing!
The Big Man and the Lady took me for a walk.  It was a nice day.  We took pictures by some pretty flowers.  Then we were in front of a Church.  They were having a "Pet Blessing".  I met a nice brown dog named Newman.  And a very fat little beagle who wasn't nice.  The beagle belonged to the "Deacon" man.  The Deacon-man shook the lady's and the Big Man's hands.  I did not like him touching their hands.  He walked away to get me treats.  I jumped after him and tried to bite him.  I missed.  I guess it was bad that I tried to bite the Deacon-man.  And good that I missed.  He still gave me the treats.  Then the "Father"-man came out of the Church.  He talked about how animals helped people in the Bible.  He sprinkled us dogs with his special water.   Now I am Blessed!
I would jump too when I was the one stepping on a leaf.  Now I don't jump anymore.  The leaves are very pretty.  But if I can, I don't walk on them. I smell ever bush.  And not a quick smell.  I put my nose right into the green... sniff... sniff...  The big man said to the lady "why don't we both take Dixie"?  And they did.  I did my happy dance where I leap and turn and scamper and the big man said "what is she doing"?  The lady said "It's her happy dance.  She does it for the first block of our walks and then she calms down.  Doesn't she do it for you?"  And of course, the big man said "no", because I only do my happy dance for the lady.
The lady and the big man took me in the car for a long ride.  We stopped at a strange place.  It was all fenced in, like a back yard.  But you could walk all around it.  I sniffed every foot of the fence.  Dogs ran up on the other side to sniff at me.  Then we went inside the fence and the lady took my leash off.  I got to sniff some more.  There was a basset hound that I liked at first... He was nice.  A big yellow lab ran up to bother him.  I knocked her away from my new friend.  Then a dog tried to go by my lady.  I wouldn't let her get near my lady.  Then my new friend tried to mount me.  I showed him my teeth. Then we left.  Who knew?  I'm an "alpha" dogpark dog!
This is WINston XXLP, doing a quick fly-by...  So many Dogsters have written to say that my fight to battle back from the Menu Foods/Nutro poisoning has made me source of inspiration and a hero in their eyes.  I'll tell you who the real heroes out there are... the rescue people on the front lines battling Puppy Mills and the poor pups that spend their entire lives as breeding livestock.
Today is Puppy Mill Awareness Day.  And what better way to honor those heroes than with a donation to a bulldog rescue that is actively removing bullies from the puppy mill breeding population?  Here's a recent email from CEBR about their last auction success:
Hello Chicago English Bully Rescue Friends and Supporters!
You most likely read our last email several weeks ago as we were preparing for a
puppy mill rescue mission.  I have great news to report!  Through generous
donations from friends of rescue we were able to save 14 bullies from a horrific
life in a puppy mill!  What a success.
We plan to have a complete Website live by this weekend which will allow you to
get to know each of these girls.  The URL:
http://www.puppymillrescues.ebullymatch.com.
As you can imagine, it has been a heck of few weeks trying to get all of these
bullies, plus our other beautiful rescues, settled and healthy.
They were talking and said how much they had missed having a "cuddle-bug".  The last "cuddle-bug" they had was back in 2006.  She was called HoneyBunny.  They said that me laying in their lap felt so good.  I don't know what this "cuddle-bug" is, but I'm happy I could help.
We sat together for a half hour.  Then I went and laid down on the lady's pillows in the soft bed.  I waited and waited.  Fianlly the lady came home and we went for a walk.
The little fat dog wanted to come up onto the couch.  He always lays at the other end, away from my favorite spot.  There is an ottoman there for his little fat legs to use to get up onto the couch.  I do not need this "ottoman".  The lady put a pile of pillows on the center of the couch to separate his side from my side.  I climbed up and laid down on top of them.  I am Queen of the Pillow Hill!
I met a lot of dogs at PetSmart yesterday.  A man said his dog doesn't like any dogs, but she liked me!  The trainer man's dog was friendly at first, but then he put his muzzle on top of my muzzle and started to push down.  I stopped wagging my tail.  He kept pushing on my muzzle and trainer man didn't stop him.  I didn't let him push my muzzle down and I finally growled at him "enough".  I am shy, but I am tough!
It was a very busy day.  I went to many different places with the lady.  Tonight the big man took the gate down and let the little fat dog walk around.  I couldn't settle.  I climbed up & down onto the couch, onto the chair, onto the bed, over and over and over. Then I climbed up onto the big man's lap.  It was a perfect fit and I went to sleep.
I go on lots of walks now.  I live in this thing called a neighborhood.  Block after block of houses, trees, bushes and grass... and lots of messages left for me by other dogs!  The lady lets me sniff all I want.  Every walk has been someplace new.  We pass a lot of dogs locked in yards.  They bark and bark as I walk by, but the lady says "you're ok, Dixie", and you know, I am!
I got to sleep in a big, soft people bed last night.  It was very, very nice.  The big man snores a lot, but the fat little dog snores too (I don't know who snores louder)!  I was quite comfortable, but the big man moves around too much.
