Dad's closing note: "Moon Flowers"

Recent events have caused me to recall childhood memories of the Moon Flowers out at Grandma’s place in the country. These plants bloom at night, hence the name. Even better, the flowers pop open in just a matter of a minute or so. Summer nights, I would be allowed to stay up late, just after dark, and watch this magic as the flower buds opened right before our eyes. We would sometimes choose buds and “bet” which one would bloom first.

Spirit was my doggy Moon Flower bud.

Of the dogs needing a home when the time was right to take on a temporary dog, Spirit looked like an easy foster. He was a good looking boy! He had a heart wrenching story, and at just forty pounds, was the perfect size for adoption. So, he had three legs... Tripods aren’t so rare these days, one of my friends even had one. Thinking I would have this extra dog for just a month or three, I placed my foster “bet” on this bud, and invited Spirit into my life.

Things began quite well. It only took a matter of days for Spirit to house train. He quickly learned basic obedience and even a few tricks. Spirit was popular at the adoption stand. Everybody visiting wanted to know his story, and many gave him hugs and pets. I was even inspired to create a Shutterfly story book all about him and his life…

Winter turned to spring. Summer came and went. Many other dogs came into the rescue and were adopted out, but all these months went by without us receiving even a single application for my little guy. After time, Spirit like many dogs, became grumpy in the stressful environment of the adoption stand, so we showed him less. At home, he began to have issues, mostly with my male dog Manny. I began to wonder if my chosen bud might be a dud, and never grow to have a home of his own.

How could this be? I had spent quite the effort nurturing this bud! I provided a good environment for him. There were others of his kind here and they were doing fine. I trained Spirit. I fed him. I watered him. I can’t say I fertilized Spirit, more like he fertilized me, or at least the back yard... I couldn’t keep Spirit forever, but I couldn’t let him down either! What was I to do about this needy dog that couldn’t seem to find his forever home?

It was at this stressful point in my foster of Spirit that THE APPLICATION arrived.

Having lived with Spirit for over half a year, I had a good idea of what his forever home should look like: Spirit would not be a good choice for the novice dog owner. He needed that perfect combination of a firm but gentle hand, rare even with experienced dog owners. I know Spirit was occasionally frightened by my own loud and boisterous manners. And Spirit doesn’t like surprises, his great surprise in life being suddenly hit by a car. In general, Spirit is reserved in nature. These characteristics ruled out houses with children bouncing about, and maybe even pouncing of my already damaged dog. Nor would the party crowd be a good home, for many of the same reasons.

Spirit best liked to play with Sadie, my female dog, and I did want him to have a doggy pal to share his life with…

So, the perfect application would begin with: Married couple, no children, female dog…. This application had all that and more! This couple had recently lost their special needs dog, and wanted to reach out to another hard-to-place dog. They even had a female dog, the perfect canine companion for Spirit. In my wildest fantasy application, I’d never have thought to include both Behaviorist, and Works with the Mentally Ill in the job titles section.

They did have a cat; I was worried about that since I didn’t know what Spirit’s reaction to a cat would be.

A meet was set up at my Mom’s house, neutral territory for all involved. I can’t say that started out well... Spirit cowered up on Mom’s porch for much of the first meet, while their dog Binger, determinedly marked off Mom’s yard better than any human surveyor ever did. As this is going on, I am thinking; “Nooooo, Spirit!!! This is the best chance you’ll ever have for a real life. Don’t blow it!” Fortunately the couple was interested enough to arrange several other meets, and during that time, decided that they would like to give Spirit a try in a foster-to-adopt arrangement.

It was time to transplant my little bud.

Instead of potting my little guy up for the move, I ended up washing off the home soil. Can’t deliver a dirty boy! As I drove over, I thought of all the horrible things that could go wrong. (My friends will agree I am a pessimist at heart.) There was the cat. How would Spirit react to this new creature he was expected to share his life with? Would Binger, the existing dog accept Spirit as a pal in her home territory? Would Spirit be so defensive in this new environment that he growl and snap at everyone? Would I even end up bringing him back home with me that night? These thoughts chased each other through my mind as I drove over…

But last night, my little Spirit finally bloomed!

I will always remember watching as Spirit blossomed right in front of my eyes, just like the Moon Flowers of my childhood. He and Binger, were zooming around like old pals not long after our arrival. Tails wagging, it was time to bring the dogs inside Spirit's new home… The cat? Invisible!!! Spirit didn’t even pause to sniff him. I brought in some dog supplies to launch Spirit off to a good start in his new life, and watched a bit more.

Seeing smiles on all the faces except the cat. And cats, being cats don’t smile much anyway. It was time to leave Spirit with his new family. While he was happily exploring his new home, I whispered my good-bys to the couple and quietly closed the front door. I drove home with a tear in my eye, yet a smile in my heart.

Next year, I think I’ll plant some Moon Flowers...

Thanks you Dogster, the company for providing an interesting place for me to play while I waited for my forever home. My rescue site only has the band width for one, or two pictures at most. Petfinder provides three. Here, riding on my Dad's Plus account, I could have a hundred! Only Dogster provides the space for a detailed biography, not to mention endless Diary entries! The Dogster link from my AARF rescue site played a major role in my adoption. The link is on three rescue sites now!

Thanks to the Dogster members of all species for fun contests, encouraging notes, and advice. How can I know so many dogs and Pets I haven't even met in the fur???

Thanks for rescue groups working to save our lives. Thanks again, John for your work taking pictures of us at the shelter. Without you, none of this would have been...

Thanks to all foster families everywhere. Sharing your home provides an important link between the kill shelter kennel enviorment, and a forever home for so many of us!

I met some new Pets last night. Actually I met them last weekend at the adoption stand, and tonight they came over to play and visit.

I was sooo shy to start! New Pets can be scary for me, and I have been let down by other Pets before. Just this time last year, I was a still happy-go-lucky pup, yet to be hit by a car, ignored almost to death, and end up at the kill shelter.

I stayed up on the porch and let them, and their dog sniff the yard for a while. They fed me a few treats and I started warming up. The female Pet started playing with a toy and I couldn't stand it any more and went down to check it out.

Binger is the boss. Funny, she looks like a 3/4 sized, female version of Manny! She sniffed the perimeter of the yard, marking where she was going to be, before checking me out. She sniffed, did a test growl, and I flipped. Well, I do like a strong woman in my life! After a while, everydog got a taste of what we might play like, with Binger playing the role of the nucleus in the center, while I was the wild proton zooming around, and around the center.

Her Pets were both very nice. Betcha I don't even have to take them to formal training. They have even had a special needs dog before!

We are all going slow and not rushing into anything, I will bark more later...

and not every relationship is perfect 100% of the time.

Dad's note:

Spirit is one year old now ...

and not every relationship is perfect 100% of the time.

Dad's note:

Spirit is one year old now. I think we ran into some teenage attitude issues and hopefully they have been solved. As with any of our AARF dogs, it is important to match up Spirit with a forever home that will be a match for his personality. So I will record some issues we recently had to deal with and what was done to resolve them.

Readers should note, you don't get these details from the kennel based rescue groups! Home foster groups are the way to go.

It was mid summer when we noticed Spirit and Manny not getting along. We found out later that Manny was suffering through a flea allergy (Fleas are HORRIBLE this year due to Global Warming, its all Bush's fault.) Anyway, Manny was feeling run down and I wonder if Spirit was pushing things with him because of it. They had been the best of pals up to this point! Things grew to where Manny and Spirit had some serious snarling duels at the kitchen table. I didn't know what to do.

I have not had a ton of dog experience. The last time I had issues like this was when my first foster attempt failed due to fighting between Sadie and another alpha girl. Now I looked to be having the same type of thing happen on the boy's side. I was very concerned that my foster of Spirit was heading for disaster!

I asked for professional help and got it. Robert Jordan, a dog behaviorist in the Richmond area, donated his time to stop by a see what was going on.

He advised me to step up the NLIF treatment. Make all the dogs Sit/Stay before being allowed to eat. Have them eat together instead of apart as I was doing. The dogs were to Sit/Stay before being allowed out or back inside. I was to direct noses away from each other when the dogs were around me. I already did some NLIF, but not to that degree. I wondered if the change would even work.

IT DID!!! Just over a week later, the dogs were fine together. Manny, feeling a bit better with some flea medication was even seen playing with Spirit. Play bows even!

So just after that, Spirit started growling in his food bowl as he ate. Now I know food guarding is a real bad thing, and again got in touch with Robert. He quickly got back with me and gave me a few exercises with the food bowl to try. In short, handfeeding and dropping premium dog food into his bowl as he ate. Again, results could be measured in days!

So the only "issue" with Spirit is he is sometimes slow to warm up to strangers. For that reason, I am looking for a quieter forever home for Spirit. Reams of screaming kids running and slamming doors is not his cup of tea. The all night kegger people should adopt that insane Lab that loves everybody and everything...

Just recently, Spirit was kenneled as I went out of town for a couple of days. Spirit earned his way into the 'Perfect Pink Play Group there, which is all the happy and good dogs in a group. As I was leaving, one of the workers there did the happy snuzzle face kiss with Spirit, so even the stranger thing seems better that before.

I still often think of Spirit as a cat personality trapped in a dog's body.

Spirit has taught me a lot about dogs. And for someone involved with dog rescue, that's a good thing!

I will rub myself against your shins seeking attention, and against the sofa if that fails.

And I am on the reserved side. Oh I enjoy my humans, don't think I don't, but I do like to go slow on initial meetings. Its not like me to go dashing across the yard to meet new people like some dawgs do.

My perfect forever home will be on the quiet side. Childern thundering around is not my cup of tea.

(AKA another poo themed Diary entry...)

So much for my holiday weekend. I spent it at the emergency vet hospital. While Sadie and Manny were scarffing up hamburgers and hot dogs, I was sitting in a crate with tubes out my leg dressed in a e-collar. The Vets were telling me if I didn't poo, they were going to cut me open to get it out!!! Now, that promise alone is enought to lock a pup up tight, if ya know what I mean!

Not to mention NOT GETTING ANY FOOD! Come on guys, if you want something OUT, you need to put something IN first! It only took about day and a half for the humans to figure that one out. And they think THEY are the smartest animals!?!

Eventually they let me eat like a tablespoon of stuff, so I gave them a tablespoon back out of the proper end. A close thing. If I had ralphed it up instead, I would have likely gone through major surgery.

Shortly after I got some more canned food at home, I pooed again.

Anyway, I am home now. Comfortable, but being watched closely by my pets.

Thanks for all the support! Dogster is great when you need a friend!

Dad's notes:

First, a moment to rember WHY we call this Memorial Day. Thanks to all who have or are now serving to keep America, America!

Second. I wonder if I can ever look a major Summer holiday in the face again. Just a year and a half ago, I took Sadie to the emergency vet over the Labor Day weekend because she was limping. That was the start of a process that resulted in two artificial knee jobs. (TPLOs)

Saturday first-thing-in-the-morning, I opened Spirit's crate door to let him out. As he got up, he gave a great YELP, came out of the crate and froze. I thought I might possibly have pinched him when opening the door...

I ended carrying him outside and wraped him in blankets. I wanted to give him time to recover if it was just the pinch or something simple. In short, that was not to be the case. He would hardly move.

After checking with Cindy my AARF foster supervisor, I rushed him to the emergency vet thinking he may have twisted his intestinse. He yelped a few times as I rolled over the somewhat bumpy road on the way.

As I write this, he has been under observation for 24 hours. I think the intestinse flip theory is out. The Vets can't decide if he has swallowed something soft like toy stuffing or parts that may be blocking his lower intestinse or if the has something viral in nature blocking him up.

They are giving him fluids and trying to get him to pass whatever is in him. If that does not work, it will be the major surgery to go in after the blockage.

His vitals are good and stable for now... That is all I know.

My poor dog, he has been through so much in less than a year on this world!

Manny and I started wrestling just after eating a few minutes ago. Now Manny has a sensitive stomach. So not long after we start, he ralphs up dinner right on the den floor.

Our Pets are kinda looking at each other to see which one is going to clean up the mess. Not wanting to miss the moment, I dashed over and gobbled up everything in sight. Sissy was grossed out, Dad just sat back and let me go...

It was our favorite, Canidae kibble garnished with Merrick canned, for moisture and flavor. Hmmm hmmm, good even the second time around!

(Per forum instructions, diary entry moved here. Makes the story line a bit jumbled with the other entry dates...)

Beginnings 7/07 - 10/07

Actually I began life on four wheels just like most of us. I am hardly more than a pup now, yet my puppyhood seems a lifetime ago, and a world away. I can't remember Mom's name, don't even recall how many brothers and sisters I had. My first couple of months were just normal puppy stuff that any country dog could bark about.

One fine autumn morning me and my pals were out exploring. We had been straying farther and farther from home base over the past several weeks. So many new things to discover! One of us discovered rolling in cow pies, another found a neat creek to splash in. It was a time of fun and exploration.

This day, we discovered what I later learned was called; 'The Road', and 'Cars'. Now we had all chased off a rabbit or two before, but these Car things were fast! They made funny blarring noises when we chased them too. We were having a blast trying to catch one, and had no clue of the danger. I went after one of them and before I knew it, I was attacked! It bit the heck out of my leg. It felt like it was on fire it hurt so much! The bone was showing through my skin. I don't even know how I made it back home, I just did it.

That was when I discovered not all packs took good care of their members. My humans did nothing! No Veternarian, no nothing, not even a bullet to put me out of my growing misery. Over a week went by and my leg kept getting worse. I grew sick and feverish. There came a time when I couldn't even get up to eat or drink.

Finally my humans took action. The whole litter was loaded up in the car and off we went... TO THE POUND!

I arrived at the shelter as a bag of skin and bones with a compound fracture of my back leg ozzing pus. My foot was swollen to twice it's normal size, and I smelled of sickness and infection.

Now the Pound is not a nice place. They have a tough job to do, that no one else wants, which is to house and dispose of unwanted animals. Some Pounds have money and doctors, and some don't. This one had neither. I shudder to type this, but the kindest thing they could have done would to have been to euthanize me right away. Obviously that didn't happen since I am still barking this, so just what did they do?

Nothing!

I was kept in a common pen with my siblings, too week to move as they romped all over me. Once again, humans didn't keep their end of the bargan. see (The Pact of Fire) My time in this world was running out. I was fading away and often dreamed of The Bridge.

The next day my new life began.

Dad's edit for adopt 08 contest:

Need you ask what adoption (rescue) means to me? How many forms of abuse and neglect can you spot in this single diary entry!?!

I want to be a part of the solution to any part, and/or all of this...

As Sadie mentioned in her diary, Dad coordinated his first remote dog adoption stand last weekend. I was one of only four adoptable dogs that actually showed up to the spring carnival. A few more were supposed to come, but they didn't make it for various reasons.

I had fun there mixing with the kids and other dogs. Dad told my story a hundred times. But no furever home yet. I know Dad is trying his best, it will be grrreat when it happens.

One of my pals Trigger, did score a forever home from the fair, so Dad is running around telling everyone he has a 25% successful adoption rate at his stands.

Uh huh. Just a few weeks ago, he was telling eveyone how I made 25% less mess on the kitchen floor with my three legs ... Believe that, and I'll sell you some swamp land full of dinosaur BONES too...

... I'm not afraid of cars anymore! Dad and I just noticed it this morning on our walk. We've probably been at that point for over a week or so.

In other news, I am learning some commands and tricks too.

I can; Sit, Down, Stay (well most of the time...) and Come. Tricks I can do are; Speak and Spin. Dad tried to teach me to Shake paw, but I kept falling over. Dad felt kinda bad about that.

Today, I played my first game of hide -n-seek. I Sit/Stay while Dad goes into the warehouse and hides. He then calls me, and I have to seek him out. And I get a treat when I find him. Good fun!

Well its not Ed McMann and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, but I did get my 30 seconds of fame this week. I got filmed for a short bit on the Paws for Pets TV segment. If you look close, you'll catch me Wednesday April 2 at 12:00 noon on WTVR 6. So now I have been on Radio and TV too. Pretty cool for a country pup, if I bark so myself!

Dad and I went to another adoption stand location Saturday. I had my blue sweater on, and by the time the stand ended all the Pets were blue from the cold weather to match.

No prospect yet. Dad says my forever home is out there, we just haven't met.

We worked on obediance at the stand. I am having trouble with 'stay'. Dad says as soon as I can get that, we can play hide-n-seek for treats. That might be fun, I'm game for anything involving treats! I did start learning 'spin' and did pretty good with that.

Hmmm... What does 'spin' have to do with obediance anyway?

This morning I on was on the radio with my Pet helping him do the Dog-of-the-week bit on AM-1140, WRVA. Actually, I let him to the talking while I sniffed around the broadcast booth. I guess Dad did OK, he didn't stumble his words too badly. He said I helped by not covering us both with barf and poo like his last D-O-D did.

I also went to the Bank again. Pretty neat place, Dad gives up this one piece of paper, and he gets back a lot of green ones and a dog treat. He works all week long just so he can get that one piece of paper, and he doesn't even get to chew it!

And he thinks I'm stupid for sitting for 10 seconds to get a biscuit?

I went to the Hairdresser's. Not for me, Sissy needed to be primped up. They loved me there. I was able to walk on the slick wooden floor, but I wouldn't want to live on that stuff!

Dad also took me to a crowded roadside Hamburger stand next to a very busy road. It is a wait-and-eat-outside place. I was so busy sniffing the people that wanted to pet me as we waited for the order, I hardly noticed the heavy traffic wizzing by just 15 feet away!

Not so much to report this weekend. I went to the adoption stand with Dad Saturday. He grabbed a bright color rug to line my crate in so I would show up nice against it, me being a black dog and all.

I got more attention when outside the crate and had more fun too. It was neat to sniff all the visitors to the stand, and I got to horseplay with a couple of other AARF dogs. End result for this weekend is no applications.

The other thing that happened this weekend is Dad got a bit more serious on working on my car fears. We went for two long walks Sunday with the whole pack. Most of the walk was pretty cool. I got to walk through a patch or two of woods, through a huge grassy school yard and then we moved up to a busy road. We walked up to it and sat about 30 feet from the traffic for a while. Sadie and Manny didn't care about the cars, but I stayed as far away as my lead would allow.

Dad says I am fitting in quite nicely around the house. He opened another room for me to explore and Sadie and I even took a nap in there between walks.

Speaking of Sadie, we have worked out a system for snatching Dads stuff. She works the socks, and I bring up the underwear to show visitors to the house. Neat, huh?

Yeah, I love writting diary entries through the eyes of the dogs. On a more serious note, now that I have fostered Spirit for a couple of weeks, its time to fill in potential adopters more about Spirit.

The Crate:
Spirit does quite well in the crate. I usually toss a treat into the back and in he goes to lie quietly. His routine has settled into something like this; He overnights in the crate with the door shut. My two sleep in crates in the same room with the door open. (Cause I trust them around the house.) In the morning he gets about an hour romp before I go to work. Spirit spends from morning to lunchtime in the crate. I go home for lunch, let the dogs play and then he gets to go to work with me for half a day.

There are times when he gets crated when we are just hanging in the house. Those might be 10-15 minute things, to settle him down just after playing outdoors, if I am in the shower, or need to do something else without a dog under foot!

One day, I was caught up with a project at work. Poor Spirit had to go from 8-am to around 4-pm without a break. He looked calm when I finally showed, but he did pee in the crate. That is the first time, and was definetly MY FAULT for breaking his routine and making him go that long without a break.

Around the House:
Spirit has peed in the house just once, or at least we suspect he did. The fire alarm went off, and we all dashed upstairs to check things out, and when we came back, just a few minutes later there was this wet spot on the floor... And ALL the dogs are looking like; "I didn't do it." Hmmm...

He has had a few pee accidents at work. All of my dogs have had accidents at work early on.

Spirit is a floor dog like the rest of mine. This means he is not used to getting up on the furniture. Also the dogs are not allowed in all rooms of our house. He still wanders into No-Dog areas, but is not too bad about it. I think he'll get it soon.

None of mine counter cruise, but Spirit does point his nose up at the counter at times. So far, no counter crusing and no trash can tipping either. (If YOU adopt him, be sure to keep up the good habits!!!) Spirit has not shown much interest in chewing furniture, but he is VERY interested in shoes and clothes! Keep a good supply of dog toys around for him to focus on.

My dogs are pretty mellow indoors, just a bit of horseplay now and then. Spirit is quickly learning to follow their lead. So, he is wide open outdoors and pretty calm inside.

On lead:
He walks well on lead, very polite. I have not had much opportunity to walk him along our surburban streets much. I did today, and he is still very frightened of cars. Hang onto that lead near the road!

Food:
Canidae kibble garnished with Merric wet food.

Outside:
Spirit has yet to show any sign of wander lust. He has dug a hole or two in the yard, but nothing like he was trying to tunnel out. He is eating a few bushes. (Maybe he is a Liberal, and hates all Bushes!)

Obedience:
He is in a mild form of 'Nothing in Life is Free'. He has to Sit before getting food and going inside or outside. He lays calmly on the kitchen floor with the others and waits for us to finish dinner before getting his. While I am working on manners, I have not yet worked on actual obedience. I hope to get more into Stay and Come soon.

His big bad habit for now is "Gate Crashing", that is trying to slip through the door any time it is open. I really want to work on that since it is a safety issue!

As I type this he is laying quietly at my feet, tired from a half-day romp. I always said, a tired dog is a good dog!

Nope!

Dad thought he had the best sales pitch to help find my furever home. He reasoned that since I only had three legs instead of the four, that would mean 25% less mess on the kitchen floor. One less paw to print, right? He made a big deal about that at the adoption stand.

Perhaps he didn't account that the three legs were still holding 100% of my weight, meaning each paw goes into the mud 33 1/3% more than the normal paw. So, while my foster brother might be named Manfred Muddipaws for his mud tracking, I actually take the cake where it comes to tracking mud into the kitchen. And I leave darker footprints too!

Just goes to show what happens when you put a brain into a monkey...

I have been given so many things since I moved into my new foster home. I've got a food bowl that's my very own. There are treats everyday. I know Bones. Dad has bought me new toys, but the older ones living here half chewed are more fun!

But like the Pet that plays with the box his Birthday gift came in, I have found on my own, my favorite toy. Its a stick. Not just any stick, its more like a small log. I can barely lift it, but I manage and then I run all over the yard wth it, getting tripped up by it more often than not. Ahh what fun, and its Cedar too! Grreat to chew and freshens my breath.

I bark a heart felt thanks to humans John, Esther, and Kimberlee (who later named me!) for saving my life. There is a special place at The Bridge for all of you. I promise now, I will be one of the many to grrreet and honor you on the day of celebration when we are re-united!

It was John that discovered me in horrible condition at the Pound. He just happened to be in that day taking pictures of Pound animals for his rescue site: Witt Animal Website. Seeing my plight, he called Esther and Kimberlee to come ASAP get me out! I would have suffered a slow death over the weekend if they had not come.

The girls rushed me to see Dr Taylor at the Wythe Co. Animal Clinic. She did everything she could. In addition to my leg, it was discovered I had Parvo virus. In the end, the leg had to go, and my body could then turn it's attention to the Parvo fight. I made it, but they say it was a very close thing!

For the humans, there remained the matter of the small vet bill. It was only $138 for barking out loud, but the county refused to pay it! Into my life came another benefactor, Sarah who paid the bill out of her own pocket!!!
(See my Bio for details.)

John was so mad at everything that happened, he created the Justice for Spirit Petition. It has over 600 signatures! Please feel free to bark your opinion and sign it!

It was Sarah who kept me as I healed from my sickness and surgery. Then it was time to find a furever home. Only problem is, there's not a lot of call for tripod dogs out in the country! What to do? Finally Sarah decided I needed to move to the big city to find my new home. She arrainged for me to travel to Richmond, Virginia to be put in the care of AARF dog rescue.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dad's edit for adopt 08 contest:

Need you ask what adoption (rescue) means to me? How many forms of abuse and neglect can you spot in this single diary entry!?!

I want to be a part of the solution to any part, and/or all of this...

Spirit, a 3-4 month old mix breed puppy was found on the morning of Saturday October 6, 2007 at the Wythe County Animal Shelter with a compound fracture and severe infection of the rear left leg. The shelter received the puppy in this condition on Friday October 5, 2007. Neither the previous owner nor the Wythe Co. Animal Shelter provided medical treatment to the puppy. The Animal Shelter was responsible by Virginia state code 3.1-796.68. to provide medical treatment. See pictures and read more at www.je923.com/misc/puppy.html. The puppy could have been euthanized to prevent the suffering. The Wythe County Administrator admits their fault. I want the immediate dismissal from their jobs all those responsible for the needless suffering of this puppy.
I have been taking pictures at the Wythe Co. Animal Shelter since 12/22/04 and putting them on my website at www.je923.com. On 10/6/07 I went down to take pictures of the dogs that where available for adoption. I was told by an employee at the animal shelter that one of the puppies looked like it had a broken leg.

The leg was indeed broken and badly infected. I asked if the puppy had received any medical care and was told no, it wasn’t in the budget. I stated, isn’t it a state law?

The employee sort of shrugged. The employee said the puppy had been hit by a car while the former owner still had it and medical care was not given. The owner surrendered it and 6 other dogs and puppies a few days after it was hit.

I was told the puppy was not going to be allowed to be adopted. My wife went back down a little while later and asked about adopting the puppy. There was an animal control officer there with the employee and they let my wife have the puppy, no paperwork was filled out.

My wife took it to the Wythe Co. Humane Society and the puppy was taken to the Wythe Animal Clinic in Wytheville. The vet said the puppy was very weak and might not live through the weekend due the infection caused by the compound fracture and that parvo was a threat as well. They would feed it through Sunday and if it looked like it was ok
would remove the entire rear left leg on Monday 10/8/07. The outlook is not good for the puppy my daughter named Spirit.

Why did this 3-4 month old puppy lay in a filthy pen untreated and suffering?

Animal Control was required by law to provide medical treatment or at the very least could have euthanized the animal to prevent this prolonged suffering. These are the people who are supposed to be our animal control officers? They are supposed to investigate animal neglect?

They are guilty of breaking the very law they are supposed to uphold. There is no excuse for this. You can see pictures of Spirit at www.je923.com/misc/puppy.html. They are graphic and may not be suitable for kids. I may not be allowed to take pictures any longer by bringing this out.

I think all those who are responsible should be removed from their jobs at the very least! They broke the law!

That’s my opinion.
