A Letter from a Shelter Manager:

I think our society needs a huge " Wake-up" call.

As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all. ..a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day.

Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore.

So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays" that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are;

"We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving to that doesn't allow pets and why did you choose that place instead of a pet friendly home?

Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get?

"We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10- 12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs!

"She' s tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family?

They always tell me: "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog."

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies.

Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps.

It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it.

If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose.

If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted.

It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are. If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed.

If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long.

Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment.

If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down"....

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk - happy, wagging their tails.

Until, they get to "The Room", every one of them freak out and put the brakes on when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them.

Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are.

Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff".

Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams.

They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pet's corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage.

What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much further than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this: DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is.

I just hope I maybe changed one person's mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog.

I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt." THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT!

PLEASE FORWARD, CROSS POST, CIRCULATE TO YOUR CONTACTS!!!!

Patty is an old gal who probably gave her family years of unconditional love, in return she is now sitting in a shelter waiting to be euthanized. She was found wandering the streets and no one has come to claim her.

Patty’s time is up, if she doesn’t get a home immediately this beautiful girl won’t get a chance to live out her golden years.

This sweet old gal is sitting in an overcrowded and chaotic shelter, scared and confused as to how she got here. Patty came to the Humane Society of Greater Akron several weeks ago as a stray and no one has come looking for her. Now she sits, waiting to find what her future holds. This is where a kind hearted rescuer needs to step in!!! We need help for Patty!

She is a 10+ year old yellow lab and approx 65 lbs (she is not too thrilled we are revealing her weight to so many!!!!) She has been fully vaccinated, heartworm tested (negative), wormed, and up to date on flea and heartworm prevention. We do not believe her to be spayed. Due to moderate arthritis, she is on senior vitamins and joint supplements twice daily to help her feel better and move a little easier She also has some dental disease which may need future attention. Because her teeth are not the best, she is a huge fan of canned food…oh yes, and she also LOVES hotdogs as well!

This girl is low key as most of her days are filled with lounging around and getting plenty of beauty sleep. She is very fond of large fluffy dog beds/blankets and getting as much attention from humans as possible. Gets a little annoyed with other furry friends so this older gal would love to be spoiled and rule the roost as an only doggie! Her temperament with people is wonderfully loving.

It tears us apart to see her so scared and alone at our shelter. No one is adopting her and she deserves better than a noisy shelter kennel to live out the rest of her time on this earth. I am afraid she does not have much time left at our shelter before a decision may be made to euthanize her so WE MUST GET HER OUT ASAP!

Patty will be released to an approved and reputable rescue at no charge….we would just like to see her go somewhere safe that will give her a chance. A donation of wet food and a few extra comfy blankets will come with her of course!!! Any rescue interested, please contact me right away. Transport help is available.

Please call Shannon at 330-657-2010 ext 105 or email if you can help save Patty.

Shannon O’Herron - Humane Officer (this is me)

What a beautiful girl Patty is. If anyone out there would like to adopt her please contact Shannon right away, there is no time to waste.

Mom and dad are leaving for vacation tomorrow AM. Initially I was SUPER excited, but then I found out that they are going on vacation WITHOUT US! What's up with THAT?!
They are going to Michigan for the NASCAR race and they are camping at the track. THEY say that a NASCAR race is no place for an innocent little pupper! I say HOW DO THEY KNOW?! Have they ever taken us with them to a race before? NO! So how do they know that it isn't the place for us?
Oh well - we get to go to the dogsitter, Angie, house from tonite until Monday night! WOO HOO! She has DOGGIE DOORS! I get to spend my days finding each and every toy in the house and dragging it outside so that Angie has something to do when she gets home from work!! Aren't I just the most wonderful little helper?!
Shadow just spends the days going in and out of the doggie doors. I keep trying to get him to help me take the toys out - buy he won't go for it...he's such a little brown noser!!!
Talk to you all next week!

Mom helped with another transport today - SEVEN DOGS. This is becoming a pretty regular thing for her and she loves it! Her pawrents are even starting to get into it!
She doesn't get to know the dogs, or their stories very well, but on this particular transport they had a bit of a celebrity...an APBT named Grace. Mom got an email about her while ago, so she knew what the poor girl had gone through...
Grace was used as a breeder down south for quite some time - I'm not sure how long - and, after awhile, her 'owners' decided that they either wouldn't or couldn't breed her anymore. So, instead of bringing her into their home, or giving her to someone that would, they heartlessly tied her up with a rope around her neck with no food, and no water, and left her to die of starvation or dehydration - whichever came first.
Grace has come a long way since she was found, nearly dead. She is still underweight, has a horrible rash around her neck and her skin and coat is in horrible shape. However, she LOVES people - though I don't quite understand HOW - and other dogs. As someone else on mom's tranport said, she has a lot of hope in her eyes, you can see it. Somehow, this dog, that was treated so badly, still has FAITH in the human race - which is more than I can say for mom right now (present company excluded of coarse). She still wags her tail, and looks up at you with love - no matter how guarded - with love in her eyes. She is going to make someone a GREAT pet someday!
Mom came home and gave us LOTS and LOTS of loving when she got home from this one - more than usual! While she was hugging us, her cheeks got all wet and she said something to the effect of how lucky we were for never having to know the horrors that some other dogs are forced to know.
She asked me to tell you to tell your pawrents to give you some extra special lovin' every day in honor of Grace, and others like her. We sure are some special pups for having some really pawsome pawrents, aren't we?

I went to the dogter on Saturday - it was SCARY! I have lost 6 lbs!! Pretty soon mom won't be able to call me a fatty anymore! When I got in the room they made me stand on this platform - which they had to TRICK me into getting on. Once I got on it, it started to MOVE! I tried to jump off of it but there were four people that had death grips on me! Then they FORCED me over onto my side which REALLY freaked me out - jeez, all they had to do was ask, I would have rolled over onto my side by myself!
The doc did lots of poking and proding and twisting and turning on my leg. He said that it was swollen inside there, but he doesn't think it's a full ACL tear because I would be in more pain than I was. He can feel a miniscus click in there, so he is leaning more towards that being the cause of my limping.
He gave me two weeks of Deramaxx and light duty for a MONTH! So of COARSE mom wouldn't let me go to the beach over the weekend! I tried to tell her that swimming is GOOD, but then she said Yes, Abby - swimming IS good. BUT, running through the sand is NOT good! Oh well, we had fun anyway!

It's Memorial Day weekend and I'm so excited because that means that we are going to the CAMPER, which means that I get to go SWIMMING, which means that my search for buried treasure can resume...YAY!!!

What?! I may not get to GO swimming this weekend? But, but, but...WHY?! I must continue to hunt for the treasures in the sand before some other pup finds the BEST treasure!

I've been limping intermittently for the past couple of weeks and of COARSE mom is freaking out! I have to go to the dogter on Saturday at 10AM. From mom's DISTORTED discription, many think it's either a soft tissue injury or a torn ACL, but I personally, have my doubts.

I believe that it's just mom's way of ruining my weekend. I mean REALLY...it's just a limp! I'm not whimpering or whining (except when I want something that I'm not getting) and am pretty much being my goofy old self - so what's the big deal?

She has had me on light duty for the past week. I haven't gotten to do ANYTHING! No fetch in the backyard, no wrestling with Shadow, no humping Shadow, no NOTHING! I have no quams what so ever about letting her know EXACTLY how I feel about it either:) I've been SUPER naughty in the house since her bright idea of putting me on light duty. I'm taking underwear, socks, TShirts, basically whatever I can get me teeth on out of the cloths baskets, hiding only one of her shoes or slippers, laying in the middle of the livingroom protesting with my high pitched 'help me' bark (she always really likes it when I do that - BOL) Anything that I can do to driver her batty!

Anypup have any other things for me to try to drive her nuts? Last night, I sat at the bottom of the stairs after then went to bed whining and barking my high pitched bark for about 45 minutes before I finally decided to grace them with my presence - then I proceeded to take up mom's WHOLE side of the bed - BOL!:)

Today started out like any other day - got up, got fed, got petted and mom left for work. Same old, same old.

Mom came home early - YAY! She let me, Shadow and Buddy out, put Buddy's muzzle on and left - yes, without US! Said something about Buddy having to go to the vet.

She came home about an hour later, let us all out, fed us and then Dad came home early - YAY! As soon as dad got home, they packed up Buddy again and left - yes, without us AGAIN!!! Mom seemed a bit sad though...

They were gone ALL NIGHT! When they finally did get home, they smelled like a lot of different dogs, and horses - but Buddy wasn't with them. Mom gave me and Shadow each a big hug and her cheeks got all wet.

Like I said before - a rather odd day!

Yesterday, for the first time, mom helped transport dogs from a rescue in KY to a rescue in MN. Her leg was only about an hour though. There were three pups - two adult Border Collies and a 4 month old puppy Border Collie and they were all SOOOO sweet that she just wanted to take them home with her! But she refrained and just dropped them off at the next spot to continue on their journey. The puppy was in the front seat with mom and about 1/2 way home she threw up and filled mom's cup holders!!!! Mom said it was yucky! She got an email late last night saying that they were all to their final spot and were doing well and getting acclimated to their new surroundings - YAY!

Signs That an Animal Might Be Abused
Recognizing cruelty is simple, right? Not quite, say ASPCA experts. Obvious behaviors such as aggression, timidity and fear don’t always tell the whole story. Animals may appear to be timid or frightened for many reasons other than abuse.

“It’s almost impossible to make conclusions based on a pet’s behavior alone,” says the ASPCA Animal Behavior Center’s Kristen Collins, CPDT. “The best way to tell whether a pet is being or has been abused is to examine him and his surrounding environment.”

Check out our list of signs that may alert you an animal needs help:

Physical Signs
Collar so tight that it has caused a neck wound or has become embedded in the pet’s neck

Open wounds, signs of multiple healed wounds or an ongoing injury or illness that isn’t being treated

Untreated skin conditions that have caused loss of hair, scaly skin, bumps or rashes

Extreme thinness or emaciation—bones may be visible

Fur infested with fleas, ticks or other parasites

Patches of bumpy, scaly skin rashes

Signs of inadequate grooming, such as extreme matting of fur, overgrown nails and dirty coat

Weakness, limping or the inability to stand or walk normally

Heavy discharge from eyes or nose

An owner striking or otherwise physically abusing an animal

Visible signs of confusion or extreme drowsiness

Environmental Signs
Pets are tied up alone outside for long periods of time without adequate food or water, or with food or water that is unsanitary

Pets are kept outside in inclement weather without access to adequate shelter

Pets are kept in an area littered with feces, garbage, broken glass or other objects that could harm them

Animals are housed in kennels or cages (very often crowded in with other animals) that are too small to allow them to stand, turn around and make normal movements possibly with too many other animals
“Reporting suspected animal cruelty ensures that animals in jeopardy receive prompt and often lifesaving care,” says ASPCA Supervisory Special Investigator Annemarie Lucas. “By making a complaint to the police or humane society in your area—you can even do so anonymously—you help ensure that animals in need are rescued and that perpetrators of animal cruelty are brought to justice.”

If you see signs of animal abuse, don’t keep it to yourself. Here’s how to report cruelty in your area.

Good morning fellow animal advocates.

This is an issue near and dear to my heart-
the issue of pet overpopulation and far
TOO many dogs and cats being euthanized because
of it.

-------------------------------
Pet Overpopulation
------------------------------

Every year, OVER eight million dogs and cats enter
U.S. and Canadian shelters; some three to four million of
these animals are euthanized because there are not enough
homes for them.

Thousands of dogs and cats are born daily due to
uncontrolled breeding in homes across North America,
PLUS stray and abandoned animals reproduce leading
to a HUGE pet overpopulation problem.

----------------------------
Too many animals
---------------------------

There are far too many dogs and cats in shelters
competing for not enough homes- the TRAGIC result
in many shelters is that these unadopted pets
are euthanized.

We as a society are endorsing a culture of CRUELTY-
animals are great when there small and sweet- but if
they become inconvenient, you can just dispose of your
problem at the local shelter.

Shelter workers endure these losses on a daily basis-
Can you imagine bonding with a 5 year old Lab cross, then
having to see her euthanizied because her time was up?

------------------------------
No Kill Shelters
------------------------------

Many shelters, and societies have adopted a
'No Kill" policy in that they WON'T euthanaize a
healthy dog or cat. And my local animal shelter
Second Chance, has this policy. We are fortunate
that we can do this; we only accept so many dogs and
cats, and they all stay until their adopted.

If you are looking for a dog or cat, I encourage
you to check out Second Chance at:

http://www.secondchanceadoption.com

But other shelters have mandates in
which they don't turn away any pet relinquished- hence
these shelters fill up pretty quick. To even have
any space for future adoptions, they euthanize
pets.

------------------------------
Too MANY pets
------------------------------

The PROBLEM ultimately comes down to irresponsible
people. There are too many dogs and cats being bred.

Abandoned animals become that way because of people-
they let them go.

--------------------------
What can YOU do?
-------------------------

Spay and Neuter your pets. This is the
responsible thing to do.

Support your local shelter and Humane Society-
do it with $$ and volunteer time.

Tell others about the problem, and
write your government representative-

-----------------------------
What am I going to do?
-----------------------------

Great Question.

Well I do support and help run my local
Animal Shelter, Second Chance. We have a
No Kill Policy.

I do the Shelter Spay and Neuters at 50% off
the regular rate.

I am holding a 'Spay a Thon' with my local
SPCA- the spay and neuters for a fixed period
of time are 60-75% off.

-----------------------
Can't you do more?
-----------------------

I have been asking myself this very question.

And I am going to do more.

I am establishing a Spay and Neuter Foundation.

I'm in the finishing touches of my New Veterinary
Secrets 2.0 Course- and when it is released, I'll
be putting 10% of ALL profits towards Low Cost
Spay and Neuter.

It will be a WIN WIN

You get to HELP your pet, and someone else's at the
same time.

I'm excited, and I'll be giving you more details in a
few weeks.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. During this Recession, Shelters are being over run
with animals- there are a lot coming in, yet few going
out.

Your local Animal Shelter or Humane Society would
LOVE your help.

Give them a call.

Spend some time with the dogs and cats.

Even consider becoming a Foster Family.

The animals will appreciate it.

P.P.S. Dog and Cat Emergency Care- The
*EXACT* steps to take if your pet is ever
injured is now on Video. I cover ALL of the
common Dog and Cat Emergencies and SHOW you
WHAT to do. It's available here:

Thank you Gwydion for posting this:

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Average Idiot,

We receive an extremely high volume of inquiries and requests to
accept surrendered animals. To help us expedite your problem as
quickly as possible, please observe the following guidelines:

1. Do not say that you are, "considering finding a good home,"
or, "feel you might be forced to," or, "really think it would be
better if," you unloaded the poor beast. Ninety-five percent of you
already have your minds stone-cold made up that the animal will be
out of your life by the weekend or holiday at the latest. Say so. If
you don't, I'm going to waste a lot of time giving you common-sense,
easy solutions for very fixable problems, and you're going to waste
a lot of time coming up with fanciful reasons why the solution
couldn't possibly work for you.

For instance, you say the cat claws the furniture, and I tell you
about nail-clipping and scratching posts and aversion training, and
then you go into a long harangue about how your husband won't let
you put a scratching post in the family room, and your ADHD daughter
cries if you use a squirt bottle on the cat, and your congenital
thumb abnormalities prevent you from using nail scissors and etc.,
etc. Just say you're getting rid of the cat.

2. Do not waste time trying to convince me how nice and humane you
are. Your coworker recommended that you contact me because I am nice
to animals, not because I am nice to people, and I don't like people
who "get rid of" their animals. "Get rid of," is my least favorite
phrase in any language. I hope someone,"gets rid" of you someday. I
am an animal advocate, not a people therapist. After all, you can
get counselors, special teachers, doctors, social workers, etc., for
your ADHD daughter. Your pet has only me, and people like me, to
turn to in his or her need, and we are overworked, stressed-out, and
demoralized. So don't tell me this big long story about how, "We
love this dog so much, and we even bought him a special bed that
cost $50, and it is just killing us to part with him, but honestly,
our maid is just awash in dog hair every time she cleans, and his
breath sometimes just reeks of liver, so you can see how hard we've
tried, and how dear he is to us, but we really just can't ... ."

You are not nice, and it is not killing you. It is, in all
probability, literally killing your dog, but you're going to be just
fine once the beast is out of your sight. Don't waste my time trying
to make me like you or feel sorry for you in your plight.

3. Do not try to convince me that your pet is exceptional and
deserves special treatment. I don't care if you taught him to sit. I
don't care if she's a beautiful Persian. I have a waiting list of
battered and/or whacked-out animals who really need help, and I have
no room to shelter your pet because you decided you no longer have
time for your 14-year-old Lab.

Do not send me long messages detailing how Fido just l-o-v-e-s
blankies and carries his favorite blankie everywhere, and oh, when
he gets all excited and happy, he spins around in circles, isn't
that cute? He really is darling so it wouldn't be any trouble at all
for us to find him a good home. Listen.. we can go down to the pound
and count the darling, spinning, blankie-loving beasts on death row
by the dozens, any day of the week. And, honey, Fido is a six-year-
old shepherd-mix weighing 75 pounds. I am not lying when I tell you
big, older, mixed-breed, garden-variety dogs are almost always
completely unadoptable, and I don't care if they can whistle Dixie
or send smoke signals with their blankies.

What you don't realize, though you're trying to lie to me, you're
actually telling the truth: Your pet is a special, wonderful,
amazing creature. But this mean old world does not care. More
importantly, you do not care, and I can't fix that problem. All I
can do is grieve for all the exceptional animals who live short,
brutal, loveless lives and die without anyone ever recognizing they
were indeed very, very special.

Finally, just, for God' s sake, for the animal's sake, tell the
truth, and the whole truth. Do you think if you just mumble your cat
is, "high-strung" I will say, "Okey-dokey! No problem!"and take it
into foster care? No, I will start asking questions and uncover the
truth, which is your cat has not used a litter box in the last six
months.

Do not tell me you "can't" crate your dog. I will ask what happens
when you try to crate him, and you will either be forced to tell me
the symptoms of full-blown, severe separation anxiety, or else you
will resort to lying some more, wasting more time.

And, if you succeed in placing your pet in a shelter or foster care,
do not tell yourself the biggest lie of all: "Those nice people will
take him and find him a good home, and everything will be fine."
Those nice people will indeed give the animal every possible chance,
but if we discover serious health or behavior problems, if we find
that your misguided attempts to train or discipline him have driven
him over the edge, we will do what you are too immoral and cowardly
to do: We will hold the animal in our arms, telling him truthfully
he is a good dog or cat, telling him truthfully we are sorry and we
love him, while the vet ends his life. Some are not so lucky and
will face the gas chamber, depending on the part of the country
you're in...a slow, painful death.

How can we be so heartless as to kill your pet, you ask? Do not ever
dare to judge us. At least we tried. At least we stuck with him to
the end. At least we never abandoned him to strangers, as you
certainly did, didn't you? In short, this little old rescuer/foster
momma has reached the point where she would prefer you tell it like
it is:

"We picked up a free pet in a parking lot a couple of years ago. Now
we don't want it anymore. We're lazier than we thought. We've got no
patience either. We're starting to suspect the animal is really
smarter than we are, which is giving us self-esteem issues. Clearly,
we can't possibly keep it. Plus, it might be getting sick; it's
acting kind of funny."

"We would like you to take it in eagerly, enthusiastically, and
immediately. We hope you'll realize what a deal you're getting and
not ask us for a donation to help defray your costs. After all, this
is an (almost) pure-bred animal, and we'll send the leftover food
along with it. We get it at the discount store, and boy, it's a
really good deal."

"We are very irritated you haven't shown pity on us in our great
need and picked the animal up already. We thought you people were
supposed to be humane! Come and get it today."

"No, we couldn't possibly bring it to you; the final episode
of 'Survivor' is on tonight."

To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose height.

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut,! it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.

2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'niture.

3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

4. To you, it's an animal.. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

1. Eat less

2. Don't ask for money all the time

3 Are easier to train

4. Normally come when called

5. Never ask to drive the car

6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends

7. Don't smoke or drink

8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions

9. Don't want to wear your clothes

10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and...

11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

Today her and dad went out for awhile and they came home with BUNCHES of stuff!

First mom put this metal frame together and then put two new metal dishes in it for us. It's very nice, but our dishes are NOT on the floor where they belong! How does she expect us to eat when our dishes are being held up in the air on this metal thingy?! She said it was called an elevated feeder and it was supposed to be better for our digestion - well I don't like it ONE BIT!

THEN - dad hooked something new up to the TV, they said it was called a Wii! It sure looked like mom and dad were having fun jumping around and swinging their arms, so we joined in, barking and jumping with them waiting for SOMETHING, ANYTHING to fly out of their hands for us to go get, but nothing ever did! What's up with that?! Then dad got mad at me cause when he was swinging his arms I tried to jump up and get the white thing in his hand, but his hand kind of got in the way of my teeth:( I gave him lots of kisses to apologize, so he forgave me!

A No-Win Situation for Women, Children and Pets

Imagine living in an abusive home. Maybe you think it would be easy to “just leave.”

But what if doing so meant abandoning a beloved pet with your abuser? And what if that abuser had previously hurt your pet, or threatened to harm or even kill your pet if you were to leave?

This is the tragic situation that many women -- and their children -- are facing.

Very few domestic violence shelters offer on-site housing for pets. As a result, a significant number of women choose to stay in dangerous households, keeping themselves, their children and their pets in harm’s way.

According to a 2007 review of a dozen research studies, up to 48 percent of women in abusive relationships had concerns about the safety of their pets that affected whether they stayed in abusive homes.

No one should have to choose between their own safety and the safety of another family member, including a pet. That’s why American Humane needs your help.

The Power of PAWS

Your donation will support American Humane’s Pets and Women’s Shelters (PAWS)™ Program, which helps women’s shelters and safe houses build and maintain accommodations for residents’ pets. The program is critical because it eliminates a significant obstacle to women leaving abusive relationships.

Since its inception one year ago, the PAWS Program has made tremendous progress. Currently, eight shelters provide on-site housing for pets and three more are in the process of doing so.

But approximately 2,500 family violence shelters have yet to consider the benefits of housing pets. We have a long way to go, and we’ll only get there with the help of donors like you.

Please give what you can to help keep women, children and pets together -- and safe!

15 Minutes

I am your dog, and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your ear.

I know that you humans lead busy lives.

Some have to work, some have children to raise.

It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer.

See the way my dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age.

The gray hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle.

You smile at me; I see love in your eyes.

What do you see in mine?

Do you see a spirit?

A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world?

A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for just a simple moment of your time?
That is all I ask.
To slow down, if even for a few minutes to be with me.
So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that screen, of others of my kind, passing.

Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly, sometimes so suddenly it wrenches your heart out of your throat.

Sometimes, we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end,
when we look at you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes.

Still the love is always there, even when we must take that long sleep, to run free in a distant land.

I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here next week.
Someday you will shed the water from your eyes, that humans have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did
not have just 'One more day' with me.

Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me.

We have NOW, together. So come, sit down here next to me on the floor, and look deep into my eyes.

What do you see?

If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart.

Come to me not as 'alpha' or as 'trainer', or even 'Mom or Dad', come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep into one another's
eyes, and talk.

I may tell you something about the fun of chasing a tennis ball, or I may tell you something profound about myself, or even life in general.

You decided to have me in your life because you wanted a soul to share such things with.

Someone very different from you, and here I am.

I am a dog, but I am alive.

I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and I can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls.
I do not think of you as a 'Dog on two feet'.

I know what you are.

You are human, in all your quirkiness, and I love you still.

Now come sit with me, on the floor.

Enter my world, and let time slow down if only for 15 minutes.
Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears.

Speak with your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self.

We may not have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short.

Love,
On behalf of canines everywhere

Well, over the weekend mom and dad went to the Twin Cities Pet Expo and had a GREAT time! They got to see Wallace (the Pit Bull Disk Dog Champion) and get to see Hector (an ex-Vick dog and Wallace's brother) just briefly. There were so many rescues there that mom would have come home with a bazillion dogs, if dad hadn't been there! They watched the MN Disc Dog team perform and watched Dock Dogs for the first time in person! They also got to meet Nallah and her mom and dad for the first time! They were there doing Dock Dogs too!
After watching Dock Dogs and seeing how much fun everyone had, mom and dad have decided to let me take a shot at it! They aren't exactly sure when though. There is an event coming up the end of March in Green Bay, but they are thinking they want my first event to be an outdoor event so we'll have to wait and see if I get to go to that one or not.
Even though I'm going to try, Shadow won't be able to:( Mom has done some reading and it does appear that, if it's an outdoor event, Shadow would be able to come along and watch me though!
I'll keep you all posted!

I was naughty Tagged by Fungi!

I am supposed to name 5 things about me that are naughty..
BOL - that shouldn't be too hard..

Here goes...
1) When I don't want mom to be on the computer any more, I'll jump up on the couch, lay down and put my big ol' labbie head right on the keyboard so she can't type anymore!
2) When Shadow is on the couch and I want to be up there, I'll go to the back door and whine like I have to go potty. Then, when he comes back there I'll turn around and go jump up on the couch where he was!
3) When Maxx (our feline furbro) tries to drink water out of my water dish, I run at him then guard my bowl so he can't drink out of there anymore!
4) I'm a big ol' bed hog! I do usually leave enough room for mom to at least stretch out her legs, as long as she puts one on either side of me!
5) When mom and dad aren't paying attention to me, I'll lay in the middle of the livingroom floor and whine and do my high-pitched 'help me' bark for hours on end!

I am supposed to tag 5 pups and have you share your naughty side... Be watching for a rosette - to see if you get tagged!!!

Thanks Dylan:)

You Know You're A Dog Person If...

You have a kiddie wading pool in the yard but no small children

Lintwheels are on your shopping list every week.

Your freezer containes more dog bones than anything.

You hang around the dog section of your local bookstore way too often.

Your non-dog friends won't eat food prepared in your kitchen.

Your parents refer to your pet as their "grand-dog."

You have baby gates permanently installed at strategic places around the house but no babies.

You open your purse and that big bunch of baggies you use for pick-up pops out .

You skip breakfast so you can walk your dog in the morning before work.

The trash basket is more or less permanently installed in the kitchen sink, to keep the dog out of it while you're at work.

You can't see out the passenger side of the windshield because there are dog nose prints all over the inside.

You don't go to happy hours with co-workers anymore because you need to go home and walk your dog.

You don't think it's the least bit strange to stand in the back yard chirping "Molly, Pee!" over and over at your dog who tends to play and forget what she's our there for.

You go to the pet supply store every Saturday because it's one of the very few places that lets you bring your dog inside, and the dog loves to go with you.

You get an extra long hose on your shower massage just so you can use it to wash the dog in the tub, without making the dog sit hip deep in water.

You and the dog come down with something flu like on the same day. The dog sees the vet while you settle for an over the counter remedy from the drug store.

You not only have dog toys strewn about, but your guests also have to be careful not to trip on the dog jumps. (well we gotta exercise them in the winter somehow)

Your weekend activities are planned around taking your dog for a hike.

You refer to yourself as "mommy" and "daddy".

Your dog sleeps with you.

You'd rather stay home on Saturday night and cuddle your doggies than go to the movies with your sweetie.

You keep an extra water dish in your second-floor bedroom, in case your dog gets thirsty at night.

You avoid vacuuming the house as long as possible because the dogs are afraid of the brain-sucker.

When your dog is getting old and arthritic, and you go buy lumber and build it a small staircase so it can climb onto the bed by itself.

You shovel a zig-zag path in the back yard snow so your dog can reach all of his favorite places.

Your have 32 different names for your dogs. Most make no sense but they understand.

Your dog eats cat poop but you still let him/her kiss you (but not immediately after, of course)

You never completely finish a piece of steak or chicken so the dog gets some too.

Poop has become a source of conversation for you and your significant other.

You are the only idiot walking in the pouring rain because your dog needs his walk.

You send birthday, anniversary and Christmas cards from your dog.

You like people who like your dogs. You despise people who don't.

You lecture people on responsible dog ownership every chance you get.

You keep eating even though you find a dog hair in your pasta.

You carry dog biscuits in your pockets all the time.

You make popcorn just so you can play catch with your dog.

You talk about your dogs like other people talk about their kids.

You have your dog pictures on your office desk. (but no one else's).

Your license plate or license plate frame mentions your dogs.

You match your furniture, carpet and clothes to your dog.

Mom and dad are sad today. Cody was at the vet on Monday and he is very sick. Mom says that tomorrow her and dad are going to help him go to the bridge where he will feel better an not be sick anymore - isn't that wonderful?!
I am very happy that he will not be sick anymore so why is mom so sad? I've tried to tell her that it's a GOOD thing, but it doesn't help her feel better. Over time I'm sure she will understand.
If you puppers/kitties at the bridge could watch for him tomorrow evening and show him the ropes, I'm sure it would make my mom a little more comfortable. Thanks all!

T’was the night before Christmas and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
The stockings where hung by the chimney with care
In the hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there

But at the North Pole sudden changes arose
All down to Rudolph and his ruby red nose
Clipboard in hand, a breed expert arrived
He motioned to Santa saying," please step aside".

A smooth haired coat and a muscular build
A broad deep chest our Rudolph did yield
The breed expert's pen, created pages of ticks
Then he suddenly called out "good lord, we've been tricked!"

"This creatures no donkey and clearly no horse!
I know these things! I've attended the course!"
Look at my clipboard the boxes are full!
It's very obvious to me: Rudolph is a pit bull!

Out with the measuring sticks, he explained to Santa the law
And he measured poor Rudolph from shoulder to floor.
As the spectacle continued Santa said with a sigh
He's a reindeer you fool! Why must he die?

"The law is the law" the expert said standing tall,
Then picked up his mobile and made a quick call
The sound of sirens filled the peaceful night air
and Rudolph removed ...to who knew where?

Days turned too weeks and confused and alone
Rudolph pined, for the place he called home
As the first snow started falling Rudolph gave up the fight
And he took his last breath on a cold winters night

You may think this is funny, if a little untrue.
But how would you like it, if it happened to you?
If your dog was taken because of its look...
Because it ticked enough boxes in some silly book?

Regardless of parentage it doesn't matter what breed
If it ticks enough boxes then it's a done deed
So humor me here and pretend this is true
Think how you would feel if it happened to you.

Cuddle your hounds while you have them close by
For some spend this Christmas, waiting to die.
Now back to the story, it doesn't end there
One more short verse I need to share

Santa fetched Rudolph's body and cried for his friend
And swore to himself, this would not be the end
And I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight
"The law is wrong, please help us to fight!"

Spirit in the sky,who watches over all animals:it is my prayer and my request
that you grant greater understanding and acceptance to humans;those who love
us,and those who hate us.
That they will know how loyal we are,how brave we are and how loving we are.
Help them to accept us as a breed in whole and not let a few tragedies shine
brighter then the many great traits that we have.

And those who would kill me,let them know,i forgive them even though i don't
understand their hatred.
And those who would beat me,let them know i still love them, even though it is
not the honorable way.
Thank you for all the strong traits that you have given to me and my breed.
Help those to know that i stand for courage, strenght, loyalty and bravery.
And as my master all ready knows, let those who would come against my FAMILY
know that i would surely DIE defending them!
And just one thing that i would ask:Let my master know that if you should call
me away, that i will wait patiently at those pearley gates until the one who

Before I was a Dog Mom: I made and ate hot meals unmolested; I had unstained, unfurred clothes; I had quiet conversations on the phone, even if the doorbell rang.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got to bed . . . or if I could get into my bed.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I cleaned my house everyday, I never tripped over toys, stuffies, chewies, or invited the neighbor's dog over to play.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I didn't worry if my plants, cleansers, plastic bags, toilet paper, soap or deodorant were poisonous or dangerous.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I had never been peed on, pooped on, drooled on, chewed on, or pinched by puppy teeth.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I had complete control of my thoughts, my body and my mind. I slept all night without sharing the covers or pillow.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I never looked into big, soulful eyes and cried. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop a hurt. I never knew something so furry and four-legged could affect my heart so deeply.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I had never held a sleeping puppy just because I couldn't put it down. I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was well. I didn't know how warm it feels inside to feed a hungry puppy. I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important.

Before I was a Dog Mom: I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment, or the satisfaction of being ... A Dog Mom

I found this very sad story in forums:

Last weekend there was a story about a dog named Molly. Molly's owners thought that the dog was sick with cancer and took a hammer and hit Molly over the head. Molly was still alive. They then took her to the backyard and buried her up to her head in the ground. They then took 2 pillows and put them over Molly's head and put a log on her head. They did this because they didn't want blood all over the yard. The owners then went out to dinner.

Today the owners have apologized because of the public outcry on the abuse towards Molly. Molly was a beautiful yellow lab. Unfortunately the Humane Society had to euthanize Molly because she was in such pain and bad shape. The neighbors could hear Molly cry when she was buried in the ground and they called the police and removed the log while waiting for help to arrive.

Washington County District Attorney's office is looking into this case.
Well, summer is coming to an end and I have to say that I'm less than thrilled about it. Mostly because of the fact that my search for buried treasure was fruitless this year! Oh, sure...I found the normal large sticks and logs, but have yet to find that one prized possession:( Oh well, there is always next year!
Mom hurt her finger on Sunday. Dad and his friend Roger decided to have a race with their golf carts and mom was holding on to the side handle. Well, the saying goes that rubbin' is racin' and that's exactly what happened - dad and Roger bumped and moms pinky finger got smashed right in the middle of them! She's OK - it's not broken or anything - just really swollen and bruised.

Yipee! Mom and dad got back from vacation today! I was so happy to see them, but after I got all excited that they were home I remembered that I was mad at them so I snubbed them for a while. I also didn't eat more than one dish of food the whole time they were gone!
She did make it up to us though. She brought back a whole gift basket that Sunni, Porter, Morgan, Cody, Snowball and Sara's mom sent home for us! It had stuffed squeaky toys - which we promptly desqueaked and destuffed - and there were squeaky tennis balls and LOTS of treats! Thanks y'all, we loved everything! I haven't stopped squeaking the tennis balls in a couple of hours - BOL!
On their way home from TN they stopped in Chicago and saw some friends too. They have a 8 month old bulldog pup and their neighbor has a young lab/pit/beagle mix so they came home with all KINDS of different smells on them and in the luggage that they took and our noses went nuts for quite a while after they got home.

Well, I don't know exactly who my pawrents think they are but they are going on vacation to TN without US!!! Can you even believe it! And, to top it all off, they are going to meet Sunni, Porter, Sara and their whole family....without US!
They are TRYING to convince us that it's in our best interest to stay home because it's a really long drive and they are going to be too busy to give us the amount of attention that we demand, but we aren't buying that!
So, to pay them back for leaving us at home with our Aunt Kim I've been waking Dad up at about 3am - 330am for the past couple of nights acting like I have to go potty. Then, just as he gets to the steps I turn around and run to the bed, jump up on mom to wake her up and then won't leave them alone trying to get them to play with me! HAHAHAHAHAHA...that'll teach them to leave US home when they are gonna go away and have a great time!

Well, we can all rest a bit easier tonight knowing the city of Denver will be safer. A sweet boy named Coco will be killed first thing tomorrow morning! Don't you feel better already? See Coco was raised with his family, loved, and cared for. His grievous crime was to look like a pit bull, whether or not he actually was. We tried everything possible to stop the City from killing him to no avail.

One of his owners went down to the shelter to say goodbye to him and this one woman who worked there wouldn't let him go back to pat his head and say goodbye. After many phone calls and drama, we finally got him back to his dog's side one last time. Thank heavens for the shelter volunteers who have taken care of him and the other dogs on "Pit Row." If the world was right, you'd be kings and queens!

So...Denver area residents, sleep well tonight knowing that this great city that is hosting the Democratic National Convention in a few weeks is doing its diligent duty in keeping the public safe by taking innocent, loved, family dogs from their homes and killing them!

On August 5, 2008, a hearing officer employed by the city of Denver deemed "Coco," the beloved compan ion of Desiree Arnold and family, a "pit bull" under the city's pit bull extermination law. Doug Kelley, director of the Animal Control and Care Division for the city of Denver, has refused requests to allow Coco to be removed from Denver and to be taken in by another loving family. Kelley insists that Coco must die. Ms. Arnold expects Coco to be killed today.

Ms. Arnold and others will gather at the Municipal Animal Shelter at 678 S. Jason Street at 4:00 p.m. today to hold a brief memorial for Coco.

Coco, and his family, are the most recent victims of Denver's cruel and ineffective ban on so-called "pit bull" dogs. "This law is about as rational as confiscating everyone's SUV because some people use the vehicles for drug trafficking or other illicit purposes, "said Arnold's attorney, Karen Breslin.
 /o:p>
"It's hard to know what to think of the Mayor's opposition to impounding vehicles owned by people who lack drivers licenses and his tacit support of a law that kills innocent dogs entirely because of how they look. The city pretends this law enhances public safety but that assessment is refuted by the state of Colorado, the National Association of Animal Control officers, the American Veterinary Medical Association and other groups," Breslin said. "If you love dogs you should be outraged at the city's wanton destruction of innocent animals, and you should learn about "the pit bull issue" and discover for yourself that these laws are cruel and stupid."

Coco was deemed a prohibited animal even though Animal Control Officers agreed that Coco possessed only 11 of 27 traits city officials have identified as "pit bull" traits, apparently using outdated breed standards. The ordinance states that a dog is prohibited only if it is an American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier or Amer ican Pit Bull Terrier or if it possesses the majority of attributes of one or more of the three breeds, or possesses "the distinguishing characteristics" that "substantially conform to" the breed standards. Coco was not identified as a purebred dog and was considered a mixed breed dog by two of 3 animal control officers.

In a related development, an attorney for the American Kennel Club last week entered an appearance on behalf of plaintiffs challenging the constitutionality of Denver's ban whose case is now on appeal before the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. The opening brief in that appeal was filed July 30.

Breslin has also asked city officials to release another dog named Forrest, who was seized a second time in Denver but whose owner, Chris McGahey, is a resident of unincorporated Adams County. Forrest's hearing is scheduled for Aug. 13 at 9:00 a.m. at the Municipal Animal Shelter.

Yesterday mom noticed a hard bump on the side of my head next to my eye. It was about as big around as a pencil eraser and hard as a rock. Today when she looked at it, it was bigger and bleeding. Dad cleaned it up with a wet towel and found a little puss and blood coming out of it. So, of coarse mom is FREAKING out! She is such a worry wart! Now she says that she is going to have to call the vet tomorrow to see what they say about it.

We would like to thank Sunni, Nallah and Quigley for the information they have provided and we will keep you all updated!

Well...we've been swimming every weekend and I have found many things that have made my tail wag!

A couple of weekends ago I found this hard shell thing and I wasn't sure what it was. I took it to mom and she said it was a CLAM! I tried to bury it in the sand but they made me put back in the water.

Then I found a HUGE stick! It was almost as heavy as me...dad said it was so heavy because it's been soaking in the water for a long time. I was having a GREAT time watching them try to throw it for me - BOL! They would throw it and it would sink so I got to search for it all over again!

Mom has been real busy making up a spreadsheet for BSL laws all over the USA! She's been doing LOTS of research on the internet and has finally completed it. It's almost 3000 rows long - how sad is that:(

That's about all for now...talk to ya all later!

A Big Breeds Prayer.

Spirit in the sky, who watches over all animals:

It is my prayer and my request that you grant greater understanding and acceptance to humans; those who love us, and those who hate us.

That they will know how loyal we are, how brave we are and how loving we are.

Help them to accept us as a breed in whole and not let a few tragedies shine brighter then the many great traits that we have.

And those who would kill me, let them know, i forgive them even though I don't understand their hatred.

And those who would beat me, let them know i still love them, even though it is not the honorable way.

Thank you for all the strong traits that you have given to me and my breed.

Help those to know that I stand for courage, strength, loyalty and bravery.

And as my master all ready knows, let those who would come against my FAMILY know that I would surely DIE defending them!

And just one thing that I would ask: Let my master know that if you should call me away, that I will wait patiently at those pearley gates until the one who chose me comes home.

Please read the entire message carefully before taking any action As most of you are now aware, Ohio Representative Tyrone Yates introduced House Bill 568 (the 'Bill') earlier today, which, if passed, will prohibit the ownership of pit bulls in the State of Ohio. The Bill requires all owners to surrender their 'pit bulls' within 90 days of the effective date of the proposed law. The Bill provides that the dog warden 'shall' euthanize all pit bulls within 10 days of their surrender. In addition, a dog warden or other officer that has probable cause to believe that a dog is a 'pit bull,' may apply for a search warrant. With a search warrant, an officer will have the authority to seize the dog and surrender the dog to the dog warden to be killed To see a copy of the Bill, please visit: http://www. legislature. state. oh. us/bills. cfm?ID=127_HB_568 We heard from Webster's Aide earlier today and she indicated that the Bill has been assigned to a committee. Until I am informed of the committee considering the Bill, there are a few things each of us can do. Please DO NOT WAIT to do the following: please remember to be polite and respectful in all correspondence! Ohio Residents : Contact Your House Rep as follows: in your contacts, make sure to mention you are an OHIO resident!!!! (1) Draft a PERSONALIZED LETTER to your house representative. If you do not know who your representative is, please visit: http://www. house. state. oh. us/jsps/Representatives. jsp In the letter, indicate that you are a constituent, that you oppose Bill 568, that you will leave Ohio if this passes (if that is the case) and that you want your representative to oppose the Bill Please try to send this letter out immediately! (2) Call your representative to express your opposition and to urge your representative's opposition. PHONE CALLS MAKE THE MOST IMPACT! Tell him/her that you will fight this all the way. Remember to leave your name, city of residence and phone number. You will most probably get your reps voicemail. Please plan what to say prior to making the call ALTHOUGH EMAILS ARE EASIER, PLEASE FOCUS ON SENDING LETTERS AND CALLING. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AT THIS POINT!!!!! TAKE 15 MINUTES TO WRITE A LETTER AND MAKE SURE TO PERSONALIZE IT. OUR REPRESENTATIVES NOTICE WHEN THEY RECIEVE FORM LETTERS (3) Send an e-mail to your representative urging him/her to vote against the Bill. Tell him/her that you will leave Ohio if this passes ***For additional talking points for your letters, please visit: http://www. animallawcoalition. com/breed-bans/article/524 Contact the Leadership: (contact information below) (1) Use the LETTER you sent to your representative and revise it slightly. Although you may not be a constituent, leadership has a lot of power and expects to hear from the residents of Ohio. So, please send letters (2) Call each member of the leadership. You will probably get voicemail but please leave your name, city of residence and phone number. Please plan what you will say prior to making the call ****At this point, we do not want emails sent to leadership************* IF YOU CAN, PLEASE LET ME KNOW ONCE YOU'VE SENT THE LETTER, LEFT A VOICE MAIL AND EMAILED. WE ARE TRYING TO KEEP TRACK OF WHAT EVERYONE'S DONE AND WE'RE TRYING TO FIGHT THIS AS A UNIFIED GROUP SO YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED! Out of State Individuals Wishing to Voice Opposition : Until we determine to which committee the Bill has been assigned, if you would like to voice your opposition, the best thing to do is to: (1) Send LETTERS to House Leaders (contact info below) and voice your opposition (2) Call the leadership and leave messages voicing your opposition Leadership Contact Information: John Husted Speaker of the House 77 S High St 14th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 644-6008 Fax : (614) 719-3591 Email Address: district37@ohr.state.oh.us Kevin DeWine Speaker Pro Tempore 77 S High St 14th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 644-6020 Fax : (614) 719-3970 Email Address: district70@ohr.state.oh.us Larry L Flowers Majority Floor Leader 77 S High St 14th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 466-4847 Fax : (614) 719-6958 Email Address: district19@ohr.state.oh.us Jim Carmichael Assistant Majority Floor Leader 77 S High St 12th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 466-1474 Fax : (614) 719-0003 Email Address: district03@ohr.state.oh.us Michelle G Schneider Majority Whip 77 S High St 14th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 644-6023 Fax : (614) 719-3589 Email Address: district35@ohr.state.oh.us Shannon Jones Assistant Majority Whip 77 S High St 11th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 644-6027 Fax : (614) 719-3967 Email Address: district67@ohr.state.oh.us Joyce Beatty Minority Leader 77 S High St 14th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 466-5343 Fax : (614) 719-3581 Email Address: district27@ohr.state.oh.us T Todd Book Assistant Minority Leader 77 S High St 14th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 466-2124 Fax : (614) 719-6989 Email Address: district89@ohr.state.oh.us Fred Strahorn Minority Whip 77 S High St 14th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 466-2960 Fax : (614) 719-6940 Email Address: district40@ohr.state.oh.us Mike Foley Assistant Minority Whip 77 S High St 14th Floor Columbus, OH 43215-6111 Telephone: (614) 466-3350 Fax : (614) 719-3910 Email Address: district14@ohr.state.oh.us ************************************ Shana Klein, President P.O.
I just thought I would share the latest list of breeds that are being effected by Breed Specific Legislation in the US. These breeds, somewhere in the United States, are being affected by one or more of the following methods…

Breed bans - an outright ban on owning a specific breed of dog
Breed-specific sterilization - owners are forced to spay or neuter animal
Breed-specific
Breed-specific insurance requirements - forces owners to obtain the unobtainable "vicious" breed insurance - in reality this forces owners to surrender dogs or move
Weight or size restrictions - banning dogs over an arbitrarily determined weight or size - as in Fairfield, Iowa where all dogs over 100 lbs are banned (St. Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, etc.)
BTW - your insurance company is happily waiting in the background too - waiting to exclude coverage of your dog, waiting to drop your policy, or waiting to outrageously raise your rates.

Well...mom took Friday off of work this week so we get a four day stay out at the CAMPER!!!!

She PROMISED we would get to go swimming - we are so excited! We heard her and dad talking last night and they said that they were going to spend all day Saturday down on the beach! How cool is that - a WHOLE DAY of playing in the water!

I can't wait to resume my search for buried treasure that lies somwhere just beneath the sand. Of coarse, I'll play fetch for awhile in order to keep my girlish figure and to let Shadow think that he's the boss by stealing the toy, but then I'll start digging. I know that somewhere just off the shore lies something that every pup would give up a steak to have! Someday.....

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend everyone!

>
>
A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for the just a simple moment of your time? That is all I ask. To slow down, if even for a few minutes to be with me. So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that screen, of others of my kind, passing. Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly, sometimes so suddenly it wrenches your heart out of your throat. Sometimes, we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end, when we look at you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes. Still the love is always there, even when we must take that long sleep, to run free in a distant land.
>
> I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here next week. Someday you will shed the water from your eyes, that humans have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did not have just 'One more day' with me. Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me. We have NOW, together. So come, sit down here next to me on the floor, and look deep into my eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart. Come to me not as 'alpha' or as 'trainer' or even 'Mom or Dad', come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep into one another?s eyes, and talk.
>
>
Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears Speak with your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self. We may not have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short.

Well, mom evidently dropped the ball on this!
For my woofday we went to the camper all weekend! I got a stuffed duck that quacks when you squeeze it! Usually I unstuff toys like that within an hour but this one I just really like to play with! Shadow and I started playing tug of war with it and mom took it away:( But then she went and bought Shadow one of his own (he's SO spoiled!)

On Saturday I was real naughty though - hahaha. Mom was taking some garbage out to the fire pit and I snuck out of the gate and ran immediately down to the river! The water is real high and the current is swift so mom and dad TOTALLY FREAKED! When they realize that I'm a big girl and can take care of myself?! Anyways....dad came flying down to the landing just in time to see me swimming/getting swept downstream! He ran along side me on the shore for about a 1/2 mile, then I was ready to get out but there was only a real steep bank and I couldn't get out!!! Dad reached down to grab my collar and that was gone - I must have lost it running through woods. So I swam/floated a little while longer till there was a place for me to get out and dad was there waiting for me....boy was he MAD!!! I think I realize why they don't want me going down to the river by myself!

Not really anything else new though. Mom and dad are making me stay tied up at the camper now. They say that I can't be trusted to stick around - what a load of poop!

Well, today I am 4 years old! Mom says I'm still acting like I'm 2 but I disagree. I think I've grown into a very respectable canine (NOT!)

We are finally going to spend the WHOLE weekend at the camper! It's been SUCH a long winter. Mom says we probably still can't go swimming cause the water is still real high but she'll check it out:(

Mom has been diligently trying to find places for us to visit once I get my stuff from Therapy Dogs International and she's already got us into two places; the first one is Bethany Lutheran Homes an elderly care facility and the other is The Children's Museum!!!! We are SO excited about that one! I LOVE kids!!!

Happy Spring to all my pals!

Why, you ask?
Last night Shadow and I both jumped up and went to sleep on our respective sides of the bed - me on mom's side and Shadow on dad's. Well, in the middle of the night I got hot and jumped onto our own little bed ~ you know, the one we are SUPPOSED to be sleeping on! At about 3:30am I decided that I wanted to go back up by mom and guess who was lying there - all snug as a bug on MY side of the bed!? Yeap - the little twit! So I sat and paced back and forth from moms side to dads side, whining pathetically, hoping that he would wake up and move! He didn't wake up and mom and dad had the nerve to yell at ME! They wouldn't even listen to my reasoning - I mean, really, if you think about it, Shadow is the one they SHOULD have been yelling at because HE is the one who didn't stay in his spot!

Anyways, they've forgiven me, but I vow vengence on 'the twit'!

'Morning everyone!!! Before I tell you my test results Shadow has something to woof to you...

It's Shadows 3rd woofday today! Mom was gonna make him a cake but she doesn't think she is going to have time so she's gotta think of something else fun to do for him! Be sure to stop by a send him a woofday pmail!!

OK - Now to let you know my test results...
I DID IT! I am now officially a Canine Good Citizen and a registered Pet Therapy dog!! Well, I will be once mom gets all the paperwork sent in. She was SO proud of me that she stopped at Burger King and let me have a plain hamburger on the way home! I've never had one of those before, but boy are they yummy!!! I hope I do something really good like that again so I can get another one! That psyco German Shepard wasn't at the test, so that was nice. I was a little more relaxed! I kind of took a shining to a beautiful Rottie that was testing...mom told me that I better watch it or Shadow would get jealous!
Thank you all for the Good Luck notes and pawresents!

Well, gotta get to work filling out paperwork so I'll talk to you all soon!

Well, tomorrow is the big day! I get to take my test to see if I can be a Therapy Dog! I really hope I pass. Last week I got a treat that was on the floor during the 'leave it' exercise:( Mom scolded me cause if that happens during the test I automatically fail! I'll let everyone know how it goes!

Shadow ended up being a Pet Therapy Class drop out. He's just too much of a nut! Maybe he can take the test when he gets a little older and settles down a little. Or, maybe he just isn't cut out for therapy work. It's kinda crazy cause at home he's pretty mellow (except when we are all star wrestling!) but once we walk in the door at class he turns into a psyco! Oh well, mom will be happy if just one of us passes!

Wish me luck!

Well, on Sunday mom made her first attempt at making homemade treats for us and boy were they YUMMY!!! Mom and dad even tried them - just out of curiosity...they both thought they needed more peanut butter. Mom did discover that she definately needs to get a smaller cookie cutter because they turned out HUGE. The recipe was supposed to make like 36 or something like that and it only made 18 - BOL! We had just a tiny bit left so she made two cookies for our pal Rocko down the street - he loved them too! His mom said that my mom had to start making them for him and she would pay her! She wants to try different recipes but dad says to stick with one for awhile - what a stick in the mud!!! Mom says that tonite shes gonna stop at the store and get us some fruit for our Kongs - YEA!!!

Yesterday it was 70 degrees here! So mom and dad took us out to Grandpa Bruce's land and we got to run and run and run! Mom brought the 'Chuck It' ball thrower and we fetched for HOURS! Then we got to run with the four wheeler on the trails and then Auntie Kim came out and brought our cousins Shelby and Molly! We had so much fun! We are pretty tired today though. We are kind of sore too so mom gave us each an asprin to help us feel better.

Dog class last Wednesday did not go well for Shadow. Neither the instructor or mom think he is going to pass this test. The teacher thinks that he just may be too young and exciteable yet. She thinks I've got a real good chance of passing though!

I'll give you guys all a laugh first thing on a Sunday morning..
Last night Mom, me and Shadow went up to bed before dad did, he came up a few minutes later. As soon as Shadow heard him coming up the steps he sprawled out as much as he could, then quick closed his eyes and pretended he was sleeping - this made mom laugh, but what happened next made them both laugh real hard.
When dad reach down to pat him to get him to move he started smacking dad with his two front paws! Mom said it looked just like the movies when two girls get in a 'cat fight'. Then dad tried to physically move him and he let his body go totally limp and made himself be dead weight ~ at 80 lbs dead weight is A LOT apparently 'cause dad had a heck of a time moving him and mom couldn't help cause she was laughing too much!
Anyways, Shadow must have slept real good cause this morning he woke up bouncing off the walls! He made mom get up at 630am (this really made her happy - BOL!) because he was running around the bedroom like a banchee and hasn't quit playing since - mom thinks the doggie speed dealer visited in the middle of the night - BOL!

Well...Shadow did better this week. Mom and Dad practiced for the last two weeks by taking us for walks and taking me one way and Shadow another. He was still a little bit of a twit, but not as bad.
The teacher started out by having us all stand in a circle then she came around and pet us...which we REALLY liked, even SHE said that Shadow did a good job at that one. Then she sat in the wheelchair and we had to take turns going up to her and behave ourselves - this was real hard 'cause she had some really great treats! As I was walking back to my spot this big German Shepard got real mad at me...I didn't even do anything! Just walking along minding my own business, feeling very proud of myself for being a good pup. All of a sudden he started barking and lunging at me! The nerve!!!
Then we had to walk in a circle and not eat the treats on the ground - that was REALLY, REALLY hard but we both did it! Then she said we could have them so I ate one and looked over and Shadow picked one up then spit it back out and wouldn't eat it - what a freak, huh?!
Then the real big test...we had to stay while mom and dad turned their back on us and walked 20 WHOLE FEET AWAY! Shadow was the first to go and I was just WAITING for him to make a fool of himself, but he didn't! He only tried to move once, then he stayed where he was supposed to like three times in a row! I was getting ready to take my turn and here came that blankity, blank, blank, blank German Shepard again! This time I was real scared cause he was right next to me! I put my tail between my legs and Shadow really freaked out this time - he just kept yelling at that naughty German Shepard to leave his big sister alone! It was quite touching. Then they still wanted me to sit and stay while dad walked away (like that was gonna happen! I was so scared I'm surprised their wasn't a pile on the floor!) But, I sucked it up and did get it done, barely!
Then someone else had to take us and walk around with us. We did OK, at first. All of a sudden Shadow started barking his fool head off, then he peed on the wheelchair - how embarassing! I looked and he was barking at ME and jumping around like a fool! He didn't care that he wasn't by mom and dad, he just cared that he wasn't by me! What a goofy brother! That's all for now

Mom was so excited tonite! Shadow has never been one to give kisses - in fact the closest mom has ever gotten to a kiss is a little peck on the tip of her nose - Mom and Dad were talking about Breed Specific Legislation, and after the discussion Dan ran to the store. While he was gone, Shadow pinned mom on the floor and gave her kisses 'til she couldn't breath!!! She was so happy that she cried - he has NEVER given kisses like that before!
He must have been able to sense that she was sad because our campground decided to impose it's own version of BSL this year - certain breeds of dogs are not allowed in the campground. That makes momma sad since she loves all breeds, no matter what.
Lots of big, wet and sloppy kisses no matter what your breed -

I would like to thank all of you that voted for me in the Bissell MVP contest. I didn't win but mom entered me again using another picture. I think my next voting period starts the 18th.

Well, Shadow and I had our first lesson on being pet therapy dogs last night and Mom and Dad said that I did wonderful (like there was any doubt that I wouldn't!) I was a little leary of the walker the first time I saw it, but the second time I barely even looked at it. I think I might have a problem on test day when Mom and Dad have to make me stay while they turn their backs and walk 20 whole feet away!

Shadow, on the other hand, was a little twit! I think he has seperation anxiety from me! We were only like a few feet apart and he just sat there and barked and whined at me! I acted like I didn't even know him, hehehe. Mom finally had to get a bottle with stuff in it to spray at him when he barked to make him stop - he smelled like lemons when we got done. Plus he was OBNOXIOUS! He wouldn't listen and just kept flopping himself down on the floor throwing temper tantrums. Then mom sat down on the floor with him and he just climbed all over him - I've never seen him do THAT before! The stuff he did participate in he did good at though. He didn't get distracted by anything that the instructor tried, except when she walked by bouncing a ball. He did real well in the 'meet and greet' and just stood beside mom while she talked to the other ladies. He just has to stop being so upset about not being right by me! Mom hopes that it will get better as time goes by. The instuctor seemed optimistic that it would!

It was almost 50 degrees here today! Mom got home from work and took time out of her 'causes' and took us both for a walk! We got a little over excited and tried to drag her down the street because we hadn't been on an actual WALK since the beginning of Winter. But it wasn't long before we got the hang of it again and we walking like pro's! Mom was real happy for that since this was the first time she's tried to take us by herself!

One more wake up til we start classes for our CGC!!!!

Hey all! Just time for a quick note. First, Shadow and I start our Pet Therapy classes in two more wake up mom said so...Wednesday!! We are so excited, wish us luck! Mom's been so busy doing research, talking with other Dogster pals and sending out emails trying to help those poor furs in NC. She actually found shelters in WI that are dedicated to going there, picking up those poor creatures and bringing them back to live in foster homes here! The great old State of WI! Then she decided to become the State Rep for the Million Dog March! My paw must be doing much better because mom said last night I was wound up tighter than an eight day clock, whatever that means...I think in this situation it's good though! Take care and talk to ya soon - mom needs to get back on!

HELP, WE NEED A SUPPORT GROUP FOR "NEGLECTED" DOGS - BOL!

Well, actually it started yesterday afternoon I guess. Dad looked outside and saw blood in the snow. He got both Shadow and I back in the house and attempted, with two large dogs crawling all over him, to find out who was bleeding and from where. He finally found out that I wouldn't let him touch my back paw, so under the assumption that was the problem, he proceeded to try to TRICK me into letting him look at it - how dumb does he think I am? Anyway, mom got home and called the vet, then they both ganged up on me to look at my paw and sure enough, there was a big ole gash right in the middle of my paddie - well I could've TOLD them that if they had just asked! So first think this morning mom took me to the vet (I really like going there, I get lots of treats!)
Well, we were walking out to the truck and mom opened the door. Something just wasn't right, I could smell it. So, in mid jump I stopped myself from getting in and stood strong on the fact I was not getting in! Well, mom tried to explain to me that the only difference was it was a new vehicle and I just hadn't been in it yet. It took some convincing but, reluctantly, I finally got in. We got to the vet and the nice Dr Mattis cut the flap of skin off and gave me something called an antibotic that I get to have wrapped in PEANUT BUTTER BREAD (mom doesn't think I know it's in there - again, how stupid do they think I am!) And some other pills that kinda taste like liver. They make me feel funny, but my foot doesn't hurt anymore!

You're never going to guess what my mom has up her sleeve now! She is going to try to get both Shadow and I into the class that starts at the end of this month to get our Canine Good Citizen certificates! Then, right after that, she wants us to take the test to be Pet Therapy Certified! Doesn't that sound like fun!! We sure would love to be able to go to hospitals and places like that to make people happy and we would DEFINATELY be on our best behavior in order to accomplish this! We hope dad doesn't fight her on spend the $200 to get it done for both of us! We think that it's a good investment, what do you think?

We (Shadow, Mom and I) would also like to thank all of you for being our pals. We've gotten a lot of really great gifts from you (although we haven't been able to show the same generosity as of yet, we will be able to soon, thanks to Lacy and Jan who generously sponsered our Plus membership before mom could talk dad into it) and we've created friendships with most of you in a very short amount of time. We think it's really great how everyone here just kind of bands together and helps each other out whenever someone needs a paw!

OK - enough of the sappy stuff! Have a great day everyone!

See, we tricked them and made mom think that dad let us out and made dad think that mom let us out - pretty funny! Yeah, not so much when they don't get home until after 4pm and the last time we went was 9pm the night before! I don't know what we were thinking! But we held it all day and didn't go anywhere! Shadow and I are still up to our usual tricks. It snowed a lot the other day and we had a GREAT time running around in the backyard with snow up past our bellies! Mom stood and watched us out the back door and laughed so hard she was crying! We were just chasing each other around the back yard but it's been windy so the snow is deeper in some areas so at some points we were actually swimming in the snow instead of running through it - we had a PAWSOME time! Nothing else really new - talk to ya all soon! Lots of big, wet and sloppy kisses -

Hey everyone! Thought we'd give this diary thing a try. We'll we've been on Dogster for about a week now and we really love all the new friends we've made. Thanks for making us feel so welcome!
We've really been living up to our name lately. Friday we got up on the counter while mom and dad were at work and ate the rest of the chocolate cupcakes and got pink and red frosting all over the livingroom. Mom and dad were NOT impressed! I've been especially naughty - I think I have cabin fever or something - I'm just into EVERYTHING. Mom did a load of laundry and didn't get it folded right away so I drug all the clothes out of there and left them all over the livingroom. I'm trying real hard to be a good girl today though. Talk to you all soon!
