Yesterday I went to the vet for a wellness exam and today we got back the blood work results. The good news is the blood work came back great and doesn't show any indication of any problems. The bad news is you can clearly see there is an issue so now we still need to figure it out. The biggest problem right now is weight loss. I lost 2 pounds and am down to only 13 pounds now. Mom says I am very skinny. With the blood work coming back normal it is most likely one or two things. First is that I am not getting the nutrients from my new dog food and will have to go back to my old kibble. Mom switched me 6 months ago to dehydrated food. First was The Honest Kitchen but I wasn't fond of it so she got Grandma Lucy's last time. I like it a little more but the weight still comes off. If the problem is the food, I am in OK shape and going back to kibble will help me to gain weight back. If it isn't the food, the vet worries there is a possibility of cancer since blood work wouldn't show it. We don't want to think about that possibility just yet and hope it is just the food.

Secondly, I have a UTI. I am now on antibiotics so that should take care of that problem. I go back in to see the vet two weeks from now to see how it worked. It will also be a great time to see if I picked up a little weight with the diet change.

Lastly my mobility issues are getting worse and probably a spinal issue. I can still get around but have aches and pains. It is not an issue that can be corrected so it is a problem we have to deal with and one I have been.

So as long as I can pick up some weight, I will be in fair shape and that is our goal.

Today we celebrate my 15th birthday! I feel pretty blessed too considering only 5 years ago my fate was uncertain at the animal shelter. I was one of the lucky ones though to be adopted as a senior and here I still am 5 years later loving life.

I got some McDonald's Chicken nuggets today and also vienna sausages. My favorite item was my brand new froggie. I have always loved toys and this froggie is pawesome. He makes the best froggie squeak and I can easily squeak him and tease all the other dogs. I was kind though and shared some of my 10 piece nuggets.

So thank you all my very special pals for helping me celebrate 15 and with any luck hopefully my 16th in 2013.

Love to you all,

I'm so happy to be back home! Even though the surgery was unsuccessful, at least I managed to bounce back and I feel like my old self again.

At this point we do not know what to expect from here on since it is too dangerous to remove the stones. I suppose like any good dog, we simply take one day at a time. They are not exactly sure what cause me to stop breathing. I don't have a great heart but x-rays don't show any reason for what happened as far as it is concerned. They think it may be a compilation of events. My heart, age, and possibly fear or stress from the hospitalization may have been the cause.

I am sorry we didn't report back sooner but with the holiday weekend, it has been a bit chaotic here.

Now I just want to concentrate on seeing my Navy boy in a few weeks and enjoying lots of time with him while he visits.

Have a safe and blessed Memorial Day weekend

Yuki went for surgery today and when they administered a mild sedative to prep him for surgery, he went into acute respiratory distress. They had to abort the surgery and work to bring him back around. They have him stable for now and we'll know more soon. Since the stones are fairly large, there is at least no chance of them lodging and causing an obstruction.

He is just too old at this time and his heart disease is too advanced to take having the procedure done again.

My visit went pretty well and I am sure I charmed the ladies ;)

I might be having the surgery done on Thursday......hello mom, that is in two days!!! They think it would just be better to get it done and let me recover fully before my boy shows up next month.

For now, I am just waiting for confirmation of the surgery date and if it goes as planned, I will be admitted really early on Thursday morning and should be home that evening as long as there are no complications.

I have to say though that the doctors there are way too interested in my anal area. What the heck did they all have to examine there for? Guess it goes with the age, they were checking for any signs of tumors or other abnormalities that might occur in a gentleman of my age. I might have given them some presents, but I couldn't help it. I blame them totally.

I'm nervous surgery is sooner than expected but hope this is the last one ever!!

Love,

My bladder stones are back this year so I'm heading back to the U of M for another consultation. I had surgery a couple years ago and was hoping at my age that would be the end of it but no such luck.

Once I have the consultation we will have to schedule the lithotripsy surgery. Mom wants to hold off until the end of June so I can visit with my boy Josh who is coming home for a couple weeks to visit. When he heads back to the Navy, I will have the surgery. There is no obstruction so putting it off shouldn't be an issue. We only found out the stones were back because mom opted to do precautionary x-rays to see how I was doing. It was a bit of a surprise for us to see two stones in there. Anyway, I'm a tough old man and surely can handle the surgery once again. My annual vet visit went fairly well overall. I still have heart issues, which is one of the reasons I go to the U of M. The have all kids of specialists in case of complications.

So that is all for now. I am enjoying my new buzz cut and think I look pretty dapper for an old man :)

Have a wonderful spring and summer. I'll post more at a later date. Won't really be much to say until the actual surgery.

Great news! Surgery was successful and I am now in recovery. I'm all set to go home later this afternoon. Whew, I'm so glad to have this all done and over with.

The stones will be sent to a lab to determine what exactly they are composed of so that we can adjust my diet accordingly. I certainly don't want these coming back so hopefully this was a one time deal. I still have stones in the kidneys but with any luck they will just stay put and never travel into the bladder.

I just can't wait to get home. Thanks for the pawrayers.

Today I went to see the specialists at the University of Minnesota to get their opinion on whether or not I would be a good candidate for the Lithotripsy surgery. I am indeed good to go! Normal procedure is to go in through the abdomen and cut the bladder open to manually remove the stones, but my surgery will be to have a laser go in through the urethra, up to the bladder, and then blast the stones until they are small enough to be flushed out of the bladder. It means I can go home the same day and won't have an incision. The risks are the same as with any surgery, but being at the U should give me the best possible care should anything go wrong. My heart is the biggest concern but the surgery has to be done.

Anyway, that was my busy day today. I even got a new toy and some treats at the pet store after we left the hospital.

I'm not looking forward to Monday, but I'll be happy once it is done and over with.

You know there is always room to be an optimist so here it goes. I went to the vet today, I have been having some very slight issues but mom really didn't think much of it. First was a lump on my head. Great news, I got it aspirated and it actually drained and is now gone! Yay! Optimism #1 Next was some problems I was having with potty issues and was made to wear a stinking belly band (how indignant!) Anyway, a urinalysis and x-ray later and it seems it really wasn't my fault, I have both kidney and bladder stones. They can't do anything about the kidney stones but the bladder stones have to go. We're treating them at this point as struvite stones - optimism #2 but it is most likely calcium oxalate stones that will need to be removed surgically. At this point it is not serious and I haven't been having many issues except a bit of inappropriate urination. That is why we are trying treatment as struvite. My final bit of news is the most serious. Last year I had no signs of a heart murmur and this year on a scale of 1 to 6 with 6 being the most severe, I was diagnosed with a grade 4 murmur. This was very alarming to the vet to have such a severe murmur present itself in such a short amount of time. If there is anything to be optimistic about, it is just that the heart is currently not enlarged. We are cautiously going to have to keep this in check because having the surgery to remove the stones will be complicated with heart issues. Other than that, I am acting pretty normal and you really wouldn't look at me and know I was having these issues. I'm hoping things will fall into place and look better by my visit next month to see how the stones are progressing. My bloodwork will come back tomorrow so we will have a bit more info then as well.

No, not me! I'd be great but they feel my age would not be appropriate........BOL! My boy has joined the Navy though and will be leaving for boot camp in December. I'm going to miss him SO much. He loves me and always takes me on short trips with him in the car. He said he needs to work on his future though. I know he'll miss me but I support his need to move forward. I would really appreciate if you would keep him in your prayers though. It is still a dangerous time and he will need a few extra thoughts and prayers.

Today we celebrate my 12th birthday. Truth is, the shelter said I was at least 10 when adopted so I would be at least 12, but to keep a youthful and positive aspect on the whole relative age thing, we went with the youngest and just said I was 10 at adoption. So two years later, I am now 12 and still looking rather youthful. Sure the gray hairs are starting to creep up with me and I have slowed down quite a bit in the last twelve months, but overall I am still a very active senior.

I wonder what kind of toys and treats I will get this year. It is NO secret that I love squeaky toys so I hope I get one or two of them. I take everybody else's birthday toys too so in all actuality, it is like we celebrate my birthday four times a year (can't count Teddy since he doesn't like toys and gets treats instead).

Well, I'm off to see what the day brings. It is a very seasonally cool and beautiful day today. Perfect for a celebration!

This is the worst time of year! I just hate those terrible, scary, noisy fireworks. I have probably been afraid of fireworks my whole life but this is a new experience for the pawrents. I have only been here a few years and I am their first ever pet to be so afraid of them. I can't get in the house fast enough and I don't want to go out to potty. If I hear one tiny little boom, forget it! I will not go potty at all and race to go home. I am a big gruff manly dude, but those fireworks are still all scary as can be!

So, please turn of the fireworks and let's have some peace and quiet! BOL! Have a safe 4th of July everyone. You will find me under the bed until the 5th. :)

So, I went to the vet the other day and she was saying all kinds of wonderful things about me. She said how cute I was, how soft my fur was, how great my heart sounded, and how good my eye looked since the surgery. I think she was just buttering me up because she went on to say that I was getting F-A-T! She said with my body type the excess weight could cause serious problems with my back, being an older gentleman and all. I told her it was just my winter weight and it would melt away this summer but she wants mom to put me on a diet. I have to lose 2-3 pounds and get back down to the 16-17 pound range. What the french toast?! I like me as I am! Oh, and then to top it off I got shots and my blood stolen! What a day it was, but I have to say in all honesty that I loved all the extra attention.

PS - My bloodwork came back great!

You know, if you were my age and forced to live with all these pups when you were raised for over 10 years as an only child, you'd be a little irritable at times, too. I dare say that I am not a grouch, just a bit particular in the way I want things and expect the other pups to act around me. If that means I'm Oscar, than so be it. Like Popeye says, "I yam what I yam!".

I've been tagged by my good furiend Remi. I need to write seven facts about myself and then tag 7 pals.

1. I'm a rescue dog. I ended up at the shelter matted and full of fleas. I was 10+ years old and for a time I didn't think I would ever make it out. Just my luck that mom saw me on Petfinder and adopted me and got me well again.

2. I have been with my family for over a year now.

3. I love to play with stuffed toys. I believe they are ALL mine! I can act very youthful at times.

4. I'm terrified of fireworks. I was so glad when the 4th of July was over.

5. I have a large family of siblings. I may be one of the new guys, but I took over as alpha dog.

6. I love sleeping on bed.

7. I don't give kisses except once in a blue moon. I can be quite charming, but kisses do not come easily.

The white stuff just keeps coming and coming. That must mean Santa Paws will be here soon. Yippeeeee, that means new toys!!!!!

Anyway, back to the snow. I was having so much fun playing that I refused to come back in the house. I was playing with my rubber 8 ball and having a blast. After a half hour or so mom picked me up and made me come inside. I was still playing and having so much fun but I was also shaking a bit and she knew I wouldn't come in on my own. I had snow balls on my snow balls and had to come in to thaw.

Yikes! Where has time gone? I was adopted just over a year ago but didn't arrive with my new family until September 7th (spent a couple weeks with my grandma until she could bring me to MN). I was supposed to arrive on the 1st so the humom decided to just keep that as my birthday. The shelter said I was at least 10 so that means it will be my 11th birthday tomorrow!! Wowzers! I don't feel eleven years old! BOL! Mom says I'm a spry old guy. Anyway, I'm happy to have found a forever home. It was my best present ever. The only thing that could make it better is if I was an only dog....what's with all these other furamily members anyway? I was always an only dog so it has been my biggest adjustment, but compared to my life before, this is a piece of cake!

Thank you so much girls! You are very special to our family and Dolly is so lucky to have joined you.

What an honor to be chosen as one of today's diary picks. Thank you Dogster!

I guess this would also be a great time to catch everyone up on my progress. Tomorrow my stitches will be removed and then hopefully this whole dental and eye surgery will be behind me. I've made a great recovery!! My eye looks great and there is no more pain from the dental. I'm eating my regular diet and I finished up my antibiotics. I still have another day of eye ointment but that is it.

BTW - I didn't come home and kick mom's butt. I was way too groggy when I got home and then when I got to thinking I realized she did it because she loves me. I'm one of the lucky seniors that were fortunate enough to make it out of the shelter. I really shouldn't complain.

Mom is in big trouble when I see her! OMD, I am so sore. I was under anesthesia much longer than expected and my surgery wasn't finished until 30 minutes ago. I'm loaded with pain meds and morphine. 4 of my missing teeth were actually broken teeth that I lost long ago and the roots had to be removed today in order to prevent them from causing any trouble down the line. One of the 4 actually was only able to be partially removed because they just couldn't get it all and by putting more pressure on it, they were afraid it would penetrate the nasal cavity. The two eye masses were also removed and the dogtor said that went very well. Mom sure wishes she knew my background better, but at least I'm on the right track now.

So, I'm super sore both physically and mentally. Mom is gonna get a piece of my mind when I get home, but I'm now resting in recovery with hot water bottles and blankets.

Dental and eye surgery $1200+
Gas to and from vet's office $20
Yuki kicking mom's butt for making him go through it all $PRICELESS

For being the first day of spring, it sure doesn't feel like it! We are under a winter snow advisory. Can you believe it? Weather can be pretty unpredictable around this time of year. We're supposed to be going on a road trip next week. I hope the weather is better. My surgery will be scheduled once we are back home.

The vet called yesterday and said all my blood results were great! She said I'm a very fit older gent :) The surgery is more expensive than mom thought it would be, but we may as well take care of it before it gets larger and less likely to have good results. It will be sometime the first week of April. I'm a little nervous, but I'm sure it will be just fine.

I have two little growths on my eyelid that cause it to water so mom thinks they should be taken off before it causes any problems and figures since I'll be under it would be wise to have a dental done as well. I don't agree and think we should skip it all together. She has me going to the vet tomorrow along with Mia to have annual exams and my pre-surgical blood work drawn. Hmmmmm, gotta think of a way outta this one.

It's been a year of many changes for me but now that the dust has settled, I am totally loving how things have worked out! Just a few months ago I was sitting in a dog pound covered in fleas, matted, stinky, and my prospects weren't looking very good since I'm a senior. Then one day a nice lady is sent to check me out and a few days later she comes back for me and takes me straight to the vet. They gave me shots and took my blood and gave me a pill that started to kill all those terribly itchy fleas and also a cortizone shot for all that itching. Then the nice lady took me to her home and in the morning she took take me straight to the groomer and had them shave off all my hair. That felt wonderful and finally some of the itching was gone. I was still red and raw from the whole ordeal, but it was the best I had felt in a long time and I smelled so much better! So I start to really like this new lady and figure she was my new mom. I didn't quite understand it when a couple weeks later she took me to a new home that she said was my forever home. I was a little confused but after a short time I realized she wasn't coming back and this new home was where I was staying. They have several dogs here and I admit I don't like to share. The shelter said I used to be an only dog for the first 10 years but I'm trying to get better and the other dogs here are very tolerant of me and I appreciate that. Santa Paws visited me this year and my new pawrents fixed us all a steak dinner with steamed broccoli and cauliflower on Christmas Eve. Can you imagine how yummy that was! Now I have toys, treats, beds, and really yummy meals. I get lots of walks and even go to an occasional playgroup (not really my thing but I have gone twice). I'm really looking forward to 2008. Things are going to roll my way!

This is the first Christmas here with the new family and I'm loving it. They have all these great decorations that I want to play with but unfortunately they said No, it was for looking at not playing with. Waddaya mean they aren't for playing!! There are Disney beanie babies with Christmas hats and these things called Boyd's bears. They look so fun and I want them but they were placed out of my reach :( I don't understand why I can't have them, but I am enjoying the holiday despite this little setback. I went shopping over the weekend and I even got a stocking for pressies on Christmas Day and a new loofa dog! This is very pawsome. Even us seniors get in the spirit of the holidays. We also put the tree up! I am going to get my very own ornament. The pawrents said everyone gets an ornament the year they arrive. I'm happy about that. Oh, and guess what.......I like to lay under the tree. The pawrents think that is cute so I'll amuse them and do it from time to time. Happy holidays Dogster dogs.

It's getting mighty chilly around here and the other day we even had the "S" word......snow flurries for our southern pups that might not know what that means. I'm happy to report my fur is growing in nicely. I still have some tiny sores from the flea bites I had before getting adopted but I feel really good now and things are going well. I have a sweatshirt but heard I'll be getting another coat for when the weather is even colder. Brrrrrr, it's cold enough now!

There is one thing that bothers me though - I heard Teddy and Mia are trying to trade me away or ship me off as a Christmas gift. I hope they won't really do that. I know I boss them around and I may have destroyed some of Mia's favorite stuffies, but I'm not used to sharing. I'm trying, really I am. I heard the humom say they didn't have the resources to ship me off so I think I'm in luck!

Just wanted to post a short pupdate. Have a pawsome day.

I went to my first playgroup today with Teddy. I don't know yet if I like it and I had to tell a few dogs to get outta my face. They weren't mean to me, just bothersome. I'm old ya know! Teddy didn't do much better though. None of his regular friends were there, but he did like a little girl Min Pin.

Anyway, after playgroups I went to the humane society store with Teddy and the humom and got a new sweatshirt to wear on the cooler days. I look quite buff if I do say so! Mia got a new dress. She looks so beautiful. I think they really like me here. Maybe I'll be less grumpy once I know I'm in forever home. The humom promises me that this is indeed my retirement home.

It's my 5th day in my new home and things are going pretty well. The lady who I thought was my new mom left today, but now I realize she was just fostering me for my real family. I do miss her though. I guess she's my Grandma, whatever that means and I'm told I'll see her again.

I'm adjusting to my new food, friends, and routines. One really nice thing is that we got for daily walks. I like that. The humom says I'm pudgy and could lose a few pounds. I don't think it will take long with all these walks every day!

They also said something about needing some training for being too possessive of toys and treats. I'll try, but I'm an old man set in my ways! BOL

I've been very good for the eye flushes, ear cleanings, and medicated baths. I am feeling so much better that I don't even mind having these done to me! Anyway, I just wanted to post a quick update. It's my first official day with just the family.

Wow, I'll have lots to say but for now I'm adjusting and meeting the new family! I'm so excited! There are two Shih Tzus to play with. That Teddy seems like fun! There is also a Springer and a Rottie, but I'm not too interested in those guys. Teddy is my favorite so far!

So I'm home and there are a few new pics posted! Hopefully we'll get better ones later. Gotta go mingle.

My grandma called my new humom today and said she thought I should go back to the dogtor so my new humom said to take me in. All the stress with the time at the shelter and the vet and groomers have caused me to come down with kennel cough. Now I'm on medication to help ease the symptoms of the kennel cough and got ear cleaner for my terrible ears. The vet cleaned them the day I came home from the shelter and the groomer cleaned them Thursday and I still have itchy gunky ears. Boy, I'll be so glad when all this is over with!

You may be wondering why I'm still with my grandma and not my mom. Well, it seems my taxi service was delayed a week and now I won't meet the humom who's shelling out for all my bills until next weekend. Grandma said she doesn't mind at all, in fact, she is quite fond of me. I follow her EVERYWHERE.

That's my pupdate!! Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend!

You would think at 10 years old I wouldn't have to be starting over, but I am. I found myself in a very crowded little shelter in Indiana. People thought I was cute but being so matted, stinky, and aged they would pass me by for younger dogs. The person who will be my new humom saw me on Petfinder and didn't want my life to end just for being an older gent and asked family to go and see me. They did and reported what a sweet older fellow I was and they were told to put in for my adoption. They were approved!! My grandma took me home and is watching me for now until my new humom takes over the job.

First thing was a trip to the vet! I guess I had several hitchhikers called fleas so they had to give me a pill called Capstar to kill them off. I didn't really like them anyway. Then I got a cortizone shot for allergies since I was red and itchy. I'm already feeling loads better. I am heartworm negative but I do have a heart murmur. The vet wasn't concerned since it was mild and said it should be monitored. I also have a small growth near my eye to be watched. My teeth are great for my age and the vet said I was a prize patient.

Today I went to a lady called a groomer. She took a look at me and said I had to be completely shaved. That's OK because some of my fur was so matted it hurt and pulled on me. It also gave me hot spots :( I was happy to see grandma came back for me. She said thank you to the groomer lady and sadi how nice I look now and how much better I smell. Everyone will be so much more willing to pet me and hold me now. AnywayI feel so much better now that I can't believe it! I can't wait to get to my new home!

BTW - My name is now Yuki. It means Lucky in Japanese
