Because of my food allergies, I have to make things like bread and crackers myself. Over time, pieces have fallen on the floor, and Geordie has discovered that he really likes my homemade goods. (Since they are basically biscuits, we ended up naming what I make "Mommy Biscuits".)

I have a tough time getting to eat what I make because Geordie feels that biscuits are for puppies, and that includes my food. The other day, I was sneaking and having one of the crackers that I had made. I thought I was doing a good job of being furtive until I felt 20 pounds of muscle start shaking my chair. I looked down to see the happiest, most excited smiling face looking up at me. This wasn't the dog-face that we often see. The one where there is laser vision zeroed in our food telling us that if our attention wavers for even an instant, all that food is going to end up inside out pet. No, this look I recognized from countless toddlers over the years. It reflected a lack of concept of ownership. Whatever Mommy has is also mine because we share everything! Yes, that was the look I saw. Pure joy that both Mommy and he were going to enjoy biscuits. I am sure that Caesar or Victoria would criticize me for sharing with my pup, but there was no way that I could refuse. No, here, "Mommy and I share everything!".

What is your pup's favorite game? Is it chasing a tennis ball? Tug of War? Find the Treat? If Geordie were a human, his favorite game would be called, "Playing Barbies". His favorite thing is for us to pretend that one of his stuffed animals is real so that he can interact with it.

Last night, Geordie brought me his little yellow puppy to play with. After a while, he stopped to rest, so I took the little puppy and pretended that it was playing with his Kong. I would roll the Kong around and pretend that the puppy was eating treats that fell out by making "nom, nom, nom" noises over the imaginary food. You wouldn't believe how mad my boy got! Then I made the toy pretend to eat his kibble by dipping its nose in the bowl and clinking the food around. Ach! Too much to bear! Geordie was huffing and glaring and sticking out his lower teeth at the toy, but he didn't do anything until I looked away. As soon as he thought my attention was off the toy, he ran over and hit it. Then when I didn't say anything, he grabbed the toy and ran, shaking and shaking it! It amuses me no end what an imagination this dog has!! It makes me wary of introducing a little brother or sister to him. I worry what sneaky things he would do to the pup when my attention was off them.

Yippee!!! Today is by birfday!!!

(When Mom set up my Dogster account, she typed in the wrong date and never fixed it. Today is the right day.)

To celebrate, Grandma and Grandpa gave me a big bag of yummy mixed biscuits. (I've already conned Mom into giving me three.) Then we went for a looong walk in the sunshine. While we were out, we met a lady who gave me yet another biscuit to eat. Then I met a new girl puppy in the neighborhood. She is a Husky/German Shepherd mix and promises to be a real beauty when she grows up. We liked each other and sniffed politely.

After we met the little girl dog, we kept walking until we reached one of the churches in town. Mom was mystified at first why I wanted to go there until the heavenly aroma of roast beef drew her near. I was positive - POSITIVE - that smell was for me! So, I walked right up the front steps of the church, planted my butt there and refused to move. Mom kept trying to coax me, but I absolutely refused to go. In the end, Mom had to pick me up, throw me over her shoulder and carry me back down the steps. Really, this whole misunderstanding is Mom's fault. If she did a better job of teaching me to read, I would have been able to read the sign that said this was a fundraising dinner, not an honorary birthday dinner.

Anyway, when Mom and I got home, she gave me a Frosty Paw to cool me down. A pup couldn't ask for a better day!! Well, except maybe for a belly rub. Perhaps I can con Mom into one of those before bedtime!

Hope all of you are having a wonderful day too. : )

Yesterday Geordie and I were walking down the street when I saw a pup I didn't recognize sniffing around a neighbor's mailbox. I called out, "Little puppy, are you supposed to be there?" The little dog turned and got such an excited look on her face, then ran over. She was jumping up and sniffing and wagging, and I kept talking to her to keep her with me while her Mom pulled up in a car behind her. The poor lady had two other pups in the car already as well as one in her hand. Mom scooped up her wayward girl and put her in the car, then showed me the little puppy she is sitting for this week. The pup is a Bichon/Poodle mix, and she must be only 8 or 9 weeks old. Oh my, she was the cutest little ball of fluff ever! If Geordie ever gets a little sister, she may have to be one of those adorable little dogs.

In the meantime, we saved yet another puppy from possibly being hurt while on an afternoon adventure. Our good deed for the day is done!

This afternoon, Geordie came to me wanting to go for a walk, so I grabbed his leash and took him out. We had barely gotten started when a lady in a van pulled up and asked if we had seen her little black dog that had escaped. At the time, we hadn't, but as soon as she pulled away, there the pup was! So, Geordie and I chased after her van to let her know about the sighting. Afterwards, we followed behind to make sure she found her dog. I know from past experience that whenever a dog gets loose, he or she will inevitably run to Geordie. As the dogs socialize, it is easier to catch the little sneaky runaway. Fortunately, as the little dog was running toward Geordie, her Mom caught her and put her in the van. It was so cute when the little girl realized she was caught in the act of being naughty. Her ears went down to half mast, and she gave that low, guilty wag. By the time he Mom reached her, she was practically on her back as she kept rolling over. What did Mom do? She scooped up her little lady and hugged her so close. Mom wasn't angry, she was just so happy to see her girl safe.

There was another person helping to look for the dog, and we were able to tell her that all was well. Geordie was so excited by everything that he made me take him on a really long walk to burn off his extra energy. Had my boy not needed to potty at that exact time, we may have missed this chance to help keep a little pup safe.

Tuesday during the day, it was actually pretty warm. Maybe close to 50. I took little Geordie for a walk, and when he was tired, we went back home. After I dropped him off, I grabbed some shopping bags and walked to the store. I wanted to get some fresh fruits and veggies because the forecast was calling for the biggest snow of the season overnight. They were anticipating 4-6" for this area. They were wrong, though. We got 12-14"!!! It was sooo beautiful! I kept peeking out the windows at night, watching everything change and turn such beautiful colors. I wanted to grab Geordie and go adventuring, but I was afraid he would start barking and wake the neighbors. Around 5 or 5:30, I could hear the neighbor taking his dog out (arf! arf!) and scraping off is car. That woke Geordie up, too, and he was rarin' to go like a kid on Christmas. I got dressed in a bunch of layers, and the two of us headed out in the pre-dawn to go see what we could see.

He flew out the door and into snow that was nearly as tall as he was! To get around, he does this leaping thing that makes you hear "Boing! Boing! Boing!" in you head as he goes. Then, just for fun, he would decide to tunnel through the tall snow. Then back to boinging. We went all over and messed up all of the smooth, white snow. We boinged down the hill, but when it came time to go back up, he was running out of steam. I may have mentioned before how funny it is to see a lightweight dog in loose snow. They aren't heavy enough to compress it, but they aren't light enough to walk on top. They end up doing something that looks like the doggie paddle and swimming through the snow. So, my boy "swam" back up the hill.

For a while, he just wanted to sit and look at everything, so we sat. I had to coax him to go for a walk with me, but he finally came. (I think what was intimidating him was having to get over the big lump of snow that the plow had pushed up along the side of the road. ) We ran down the middle of the snowy street and on some of our favorite side roads. We stopped to look at the little duck pond a heard dozens of geese arguing about something. By the time we got home, Geordie was so covered with snow that he couldn't bend his arms or legs. At one point, he just stood in the snow and whimpered.

Oh, I forgot, when he was having trouble getting back up the hill and was "swimming", I offered to go ahead of him and pack the snow. (I had noticed that he was walking in his original footprints.) As soon as I got ahead of him, he stopped and gave me this totally angry look. So, I stepped out of his path, and he swam more. I tried walking on his path again, and again he stopped and glared at me. How funny! He didn't want me in front helping him!

At the end of the walk when I tried to unhook his long leash, I wasn't able to grab hold of it. Geordie, of course, wasn't making things easy by being still. After much tugging and pulling I found that the leash had become enmeshed in the snow on his stomach. It was totally embedded there! My poor little guy. If we both hadn't been so totally covered with snow, I would have tried to get my camera. Oh well, we will just have to remember this day! We both had a lot of fun and have spent most of the day napping after it. The funny thing is, after the snow, the temps went up to 50, and most of the snow has already melted. Whoever heard of such a wussy storm?!

Last year a one of our neighbors adopted a shepherd dog. He is a very handsome, very good dog and would sit watching the family, not barking or jumping or acting up. Whenever Geordie would go out and see him, Geordie would do his loud, trash-talk bark to let the shepherd know he was there. The shepherd would simply sit and ignore him.

After Christmas when it snowed, the first thing Geordie did was run outside and start calling for the shepherd to come and play. The other dog wasn't outside, but Geordie kept calling and calling. Now, whenever Geordie goes outside and the shepherd is out too, the other dog jumps and barks and greets Geordie. Oh dear, my boy has corrupted the nicest dog in the neighborhood!
Oh goodness, I have to tell you my Geordie story from last night! Since it has been raining, Geordie has a touch of cabin fever. Last night, he didn't want to go to bed but wanted to run around and play with toys. We chased one after another, and he chewed on a few. At one point, I reached into his toy box and took out Brown Puppy. I may have mentioned this toy before. I am partial to it, and Geordie knows it. When he really wants me to play with him, he will bring me that one as a lure. So, I took out Brown Puppy and I made him wag his tail and do a few tricks. I held him close and scratched his ears. Geordie hates the trick, "smile". I try to get him to smile, but he won't, so I touch his whiskers and it makes his lips draw back. Anyway, this toy puppy has a big grin on his face, and I showed Geordie Puppy's big "smile". That made him angry. Later, I was trying to convince Geordie to go to bed, so I showed him how Puppy was going to bed. I brought the toy into the bedroom and set it on my sweatshirt. I thought that maybe Geordie would curl up next to the toy and sleep. What did he do, though? As soon as he saw the puppy on "his" bed, he stomped into the bedroom, grabbed the puppy, dragged it into the hallway and threw it on the ground! He always gets jealous when I show any attention to the toy, but he usually doesn't evict it from the room! I was laughing sooo hard on the inside, but I didn't want him to know I was laughing at him. You know how self-conscious dogs can be when they know you are laughing at them!

In previous years, I would wrap Geordie's Christmas presents and hide them in a closet, saving them for the holiday. This year, his joined everyone else's under the tree as part of the decorations. I figured they would be safe because he is very good at leaving things alone that aren't his.

Yesterday, however, when I was busy doing something else, Geordie got into the Christmas presents but good. He used his claw to tear each one open enough to stick his nose in and check it out. He kept opening until he found one for himself. Then he unwrapped it and played with it. By today, his new stuffed puppy has been ripped in half, the squeaker torn out, and his ears pulled off. Hey, at least someone is having a good time at Christmas!

When I started teaching Geordie to spin, we hadn't learned to talk that well yet. To get him to spin, I used a toy and had him follow it in a tight circle. I would say "Spin", he would follow, then I would give him a reward. We practiced and practiced, but he wouldn't do the spin without the toy. One day, I finally got frustrated and threw my hands up and said, "Why won't you spin?" I was totally not expecting it, but he understood my question, and he answered me! He took his toy, shoved it into my hand and gestured that "Spin means follow the toy, doesn't it?" I gasped, "Ooooh!" with the accompanying look of comprehension on my face. From that moment on, he spun without the lure. I finally understood that he thought I wanted him to follow the toy, and he understood that I am an idiot. That was one of the first breakthroughs we had in talking. Now when I want to teach him a new trick, I can largely use English to explain what I want him to do. I will repeat myself once or twice so that he knows that I am teaching and to let him get used to the sound of the words.

He likes when we use words to play Find the Biscuit. I will hide one, then send him to go find it. He gives up early and asks me for hints and clues to where it is. The other day, I learned more about how he understands my words. I told him to make a left turn, and he did, but he thought I meant that the food would be right there. I learned to tell him, "Left turn. Walk, walk." So, he turned, then took two steps and then found the biscuit. He is such a little smarty!

A while ago, I wrote how by switching Geordie from Sentinel to Heartgard, I saw a marked improvement in his allergies. Well, Heartgard or no, it is definitely allergy season here!

I know we're not alone in this boat. It seems everyone I talk to complains of their dogs licking all night and suffering from lots of itchies. Poor Geordie is no exception. The little guy has spent the last 3 weeks rolling on his back in the grass or rubbing up against the furniture.

Finally, though, I think he has found a solution for his itching problem: he makes me scratch him. All the time. If I stop, he barks or whines or gives me Sad Puppy Eyes until I give in and start rubbing him again. I wouldn't mind that much, except that he insists in lying juuuust out of my reach so that I have to stretch in order to touch him. I'll insist that he come closer, but then he'll slither down and ooze across the floor until he is juuuust out of reach again.

I hate to wish my life away, but I am very anxious for first frost. I am hoping that whatever is blooming and making both him and me miserable will die so that we can have some relief.

Good luck to all of you dealing with pets with allergies. And, if you have any secrets for dealing with the itching, please feel free to share them with us!

A while ago, I read an article that said that dogs only wag at things that are alive or that they think are alive. (For instance, they may wag at a leaf blowing across the lawn if they think it is really a chipmunk.)

The other evening, Geordie was pestering me for a bite of my dinner, and I gave him a really long green bean that I had cooked. As soon as I lifted it out of the pot and moved it toward him, he started doing an excited, happy wag. It made me wonder, did he think of the green bean as alive? Or, were the scientists wrong, and dogs do wag when they are happy and anticipating something good?

After my elderly dog passed away years ago, I missed him terribly. I wanted a new companion, but I couldn't envision myself with anyone but him.

I used to imagine that I would wander into the pet store and find him as a puppy among the other pets. Maybe he wouldn't even look the same, but I would recognize the spark in his eyes that would tell me it was him.

Then, landlord be darned, I would take my little puppy home and give him a wonderful life! I would already know what he liked and disliked. I would make sure that we spent as much time playing as he wanted. This time, I would make his life perfect. (Not that he had it bad in the first place, but whenever you lose someone, you always wish you had done more.)

I never did find my little guy again, but many years later, I met the most wonderful pup in Geordie. His personality is completely different. His energy levels are high. His opinions are strong. Sometimes I hate to admit it, but I think Geordie might be even smarter. Imagine if I had gotten my way, I would never have met my new pup. Geordie has changed everything from how many people I know in the neighborhood to my business where I design pet costumes. Sometimes there is joy in unanswered prayers.

Like many people, I used Sentinel to keep my dog safe from heartworms, fleas and other pests. After the temporary closing of the Novartis plant, I had to make a choice about which alternate product(s) I wanted my dog to use.

Ever since the commercial campaign started for Trifexis, I felt uncomfortable about the product. I got their pamphlet from the vet and read it cover to cover, including adverse effect that were reported in the back. Then, just for fun, I looked at reviews from ordinary people whose dogs weren't part of the test group. There was a significantly higher number of reported side effects with warnings from people that said things like, "If you love your dog, don't give him/her this pill!" A particularly nasty problem with the pills was painful sores on the dogs' backs. In general, I don't like to take new medications. I prefer to wait until more is known about them, so I decided to have the vet switch Geordie to Heartgard instead of Trifexis, which my vet was pushing.

Pushing is the word for it, too. I felt as if I had asked her to give up her firstborn instead of a simple prescription for a well-known and safe heartworm medication! (Long story short, I am now on my vet's Poopy List for bucking the trend.)

One reason I chose Sentinel for Geordie was that I didn't like the idea of the topical insecticides that you put on a dog's fur. I have a lot of chemical sensitivities, and I was afraid that I might have a reaction to it. At that point, it would be difficult to get it out of the carpet and off of any furniture where it may have touched. (Even though Geordie is not allowed on the furniture, I could transfer it there by touching him, then touching it.)

I read the Dogster article about using neem as an alternative to topical pesticides, and I looked at other sources as well. In the end, I chose a topical treatment that included neem, lemon grass, cedar and other aromatic oils. (For safe measure, I have diatomaceous earth, and I comb a little of that on his fur in case a bug gets on him.)

What I wanted to share was the happy side effect I have found from stopping using an internal flea protection for my little guy. For years, Geordie has had increasingly bad skin allergies. He would actually cry for me to use topical sprays on him to alleviate his misery. Since stopping Sentinel, his allergies have improved about 95%. Occasionally he will lick a paw, but that is normal. This isn't a scientific study, but if you like anecdotal stories, I will say that I have observed a marked improvement in my dog's allergies after stopping those pills. And how do the oils and DE work? So far, great! I was a little nervous when I first made the switch, but I am happy with the results. "What about the scent?" you may wonder. I have found that it dissipates in just a few minutes. It is strong enough to keep the bugs away, but I don't smell it on him.

In case you are considering making a change in your pet's prevention routine, let me encourage you to give it a try. If you are uncomfortable about the risk with ticks, there is a Lyme's Disease vaccine you can get for your dog. It is a once a year shot, and it is effective 99% of the time. I do this for my dog. He is good about telling me when there is a tick on his fur (he absolutely hates them), but in case one sneaks past us, he shouldn't get the disease.

Ever since Geordie was little, he liked to make up rules for things and then teach me about them. When it comes to his vocabulary, he is no different.

(I will preface this story by saying that I have taught Geordie to nod his head to answer a question with a "yes", and to turn his head to the side to mean "no". In this way, I can hold conversations with him by asking yes/no questions.)

Last night as I was cooking, Geordie kept squeaking and nudging me to let me know he wanted something. When I asked what he wanted, he pointed with his nose at the microwave. (He didn't realize that I hadn't heated anything up yet.) What made me laugh was his word for microwave. He thinks of it as a "Beep, beep, beep"!

I had told my Mom about some of Geordie's words before, and she asked me how I know what his words are. I explained how we go about those sorts of things. An easy example is soup. One evening, he wanted to taste the soup I was making. Wanting him to learn and respond to a word, I asked him, "Do you want some soup?" while pointing to the pot. If he would have nodded "yes", I would have given him a taste. He did nothing. So, I asked, "Do you want some broth?" Again, no response. Then I asked, "Would you like some chicken water?" (thinking to put together some words that I knew he was familiar with), and he gave me a big nod and got all excited. OK, Geordie's word for soup is chicken water! I used a similar process with the microwave. It is funny because I asked if he wanted "hot food" (He knows hot and cold), but he wouldn't say yes. He wanted food specifically from the microwave (or the Beep, beep, beep). He is such a funny guy. He decides these things and insists I learn from him. Of course, I wouldn't have him any other way!

I guess that's why this incident struck me as so funny. We were walking past a kiosk at the store when I felt a tug on the leash. I looked back and saw Geordie standing up on his hind legs, holding onto a shelf with his hands and pooping.
When I (Geordie's Mom) was just a baby, my mother tried to teach me manners at the table. One day when I burped, she prompted me, "What do we say when we burp?" I thought for a second then threw my hands in the air and yelled, "Piggy Wiggy Woo!" My Mom said it was very difficult to keep a straight face around that kind of answer. In the years since, in my family, if someone burps, you say "Piggy Wiggy Woo" instead of "Excuse me".

If you have a terrier, then you know how they love to burp. If Geordie eats the slightest thing, even a piece of kibble, he lets out a good one. This has earned him the nickname, "Geordie Weordie Woo". In case you've ever wondered when you read his nicknames on his pet page.

Last night, my friend stopped by with her little boy. Geordie never settled down for the whole visit. He wagged very hard, very fast, plus he ran back and forth barking the whole time. By the time my friend was ready to leave, his normally erect tail was curved around his bottom...and it stayed that way. He never yelped, and I know no one pulled his tail. When he tried to sit down, he looked really uncomfortable. I touched his legs and his tail, and he didn't seem to have any injuries. So, I wondered, can a dog pull a tail muscle?

I found a "dog cake" at the store (by Canine Cuisine), and I mentioned to my Folks that I was going to give it to him for his birthday. They came to the party with candles and a camera. We all sang "Happy Birthday" to Geordie and got pics of him standing next to his cake. He was thrilled because he likes to be the center of attention, and he likes food. He got a new Loofah dog to play with, and he got to eat the whole cake by himself. He had a bit of a tummy ache that night, but he's all better today. In all, I think it was a winner of a birthday for a 3-year-old of any species!

Woof is a name I've given to a dog along the route where Geordie and I walk. The first time we "met", Geordie and I were engrossed in chasing a squirrel. Woof came up behind us and said, "WOOF!" as loud as he could. It caught me totally off guard, and I screamed and jumped straight up in the air. I scared poor Woof, and he put his ears and tail down and slunk home.

I came to realize that Woof patrolled a whole block, not just a single yard. Whenever we walk anywhere along those four streets, I've got to watch out for that ball of noise and fur.

It seemed that Woof was always startling me. Almost as if he were doing it on purpose. Until one day when I caught him planning one of his attacks. He had already sneaked up on Geordie and me once, barking like crazy. Then I watched him creep under the bushes and position himself between two parked cars. I was tall enough to see him, but poor Geordie wasn't. Sure enough, when Geordie and I got to the two cars, Woof jumped out and let out a humongous bark. This, of course, set Geordie to barking too. If I don't quiet him, he'll never stop on his own, so add my own yelling to the mix. Some guy came running out of his house to see what was the matter.

Woof is an older gent. Sneaking up on folks must be his great entertainment in life.

Seriously, it would be interesting to see how, linguistically, he classifies his world. Lately, he has been receptive to me teaching him to "Talk" as a command (to make the growly noises Cairns love to make when they want to play or are mad). He has shown that he is willing to immitate my vocalizatons...Hmmm, I wonder how far we can go with this?

In addition to saying MuhMuhMuhMuh for Minty Biscuit, Geordie has made up some other words as well.

He has figured out a word for "peanut butter". Grandma gave him a taste of it, and then he made up a word for it so that he can get more. His word isn't verbal; it's sign. To get some, he nods his head while sticking his tongue out. For emphasis, he'll raise his hand. (To him, a raised paw means both "please" and "excuse me".) It's so adorable, he usually ends up getting it. What amazes me is that he is using a word, and not just going to the cupboard and scratching. By creating a word, he can ask for the food no matter where he is, and you know what he wants.

I've also caught him saying "Ungh Ungh Ungh" At first, I thought he was making fun of human speach much as we immitate dogs by making sounds like "Arf, Arf, Arf". He's shown me, though, that "Ungh Ungh Ungh" is GeordieSpeak for doing tricks. (He likes doing tricks because he gets food rewards.) He uses this word fairly often. If he can think up words for these things, what else is he capable of saying? How did God make such little doggies so smart?

Like so many grandparents, Geordie's like to nag me that I do everything wrong in raising my dog. Their latest complaint was, "His nails need trimmed!" I told them that Cairns' nails look long, but that his are OK. They argued and nagged until I told them they could take him to the groomer to get them clipped, if they were that worried. (I felt vindicated when the groomer said that his nails were fine! Ha!)

Anyway, when I got my little boy back, I ran over and hugged him and pressed my face against his fur....Ow! Ow! What just happened? It turned out that the groomer had some sort of perfume on her hands, and she got it on Geordie when she touched him. Then I got it on my face and got a burn from it.

I've been afraid of something like this happening, that's why I've always done his grooming myself. I'm worried that he won't be able to be a therapy dog because if someone wearing a scent or preservatives touches him, I can get burned from it. I feel bad for my little guy. I'm sure he would love to be a therapy dog, but I guess he'll have to settle for making me feel better.

Sorry we're late. Geordie and have been busy and offline for a week. So, here's out belated Thanksgiving Tag:

Because it’s Thanksgiving time, there is a change to the rules. Each player needs to tell seven special things they are thankful for. Tagged dogs must post the rules in their diary and their 7 thankful things. Then choose 7 pups to tag and list their names. Let them know by pawmail or rosette that they have been tagged and to read your diary for the instructions on how to play.

1. I'm thankful for the cooler weather, finally!
2. I'm thankful for Sammi, the girl-dog who lives down the street. Woo Hoo!
3. I'm thankful for my many disembowled stuffies.
4. I'm thankful for gravity. It makes finding food on the floor a certainty!
5. I'm thankful for Minty Biscuits.
6. I'm thankful for my many Dogster friends.
7. I'm thankful that my friends and family are all well.

Now, I tag: Roscoe, Danny, Yankee, Ragtime, Sabrina, Sunny and Paquita

The command we learned that day was to have the handler and the dog walk backwards at the same pace. It is usually difficult for a dog to learn this one.
I was wondering if anyone else's pup does something like this:

When I walk Geordie at night, he insists on searching out a particular star in the night sky, then he barks and barks and barks at it, trying to scare it away like he would a bird.

When he was younger, he would jump up and try to catch the stars. One evening, he was so determined to catch one that he fought me when it came time to go in the house. So, I picked him up and held him on my shoulder. With the other hand, I reached out as if to touch the star. When he saw that it was too far away to reach, even when standing on my shoulder, he sort of deflated. I hated to destroy his dream, but I was afraid he would wake the neighbors.

As I'd mentioned in a previous diary entry, I've been teaching Geordie to say "yes" and "no". I was really pleased with his progress, but noticed that he wasn't continuing as nicely as he had started. I found out why. My Mom saw Geordie nodding his head "yes" to different questions that I asked him, and she thought it was so cute that she started asking him things all the time. The problem is, instead of asking him "Do you want...?" questions, where he could answer negative or positive, she would ask him, "Do you love Grandma? Yeah?" "Did you make big poopies? Yeah?". Geordie found that as long as he nodded his head when she did, he got praise and/or a treat. Aaagh! Now I've got to teach my Mom before I can teach the puppy!!

Hey, has anyone seen the new Fall TV lineup? Of course not! It's a bunch of stinkeroos, this season. It is funny that at a time when picture clarity is improving by leaps and bounds, program content is so stinky. The up side is that since TV is so bad, I just turn it off and play with my pup. Geordie gets to play lots of games of chase and be the center of attention of him Mom. If Madison Avenue knew this, I bet they'd try to put ads on puppies.

Well you can have your TV and your nightclubs,
And you can have your drive-in picture show.
I'll stay here with my little dog near
We'll listen to the radio
Biding my time watching Geordie grow.

By the way, if anyone sees this, can you read this word? سلام (It should look like a lowercase "g", sort of a backward "K" and a "w".) Thanks.

Geordie has recently joined the ranks of the allergy sufferers. A couple of days ago, I thought I found bite marks on his legs. Since I'm not positive what flea bites look like, I took him to the vet to get checked out. The vet said he probably has seasonal allergies, and she gave him antibiotics for his skin infection. The good news is that he is getting better. The bad news is that he is so sleepy from the pills that he doesn't have the energy to get in trouble and do funny things.

The vet also said that Geordie has beautiful, white teeth. I guess all those nights of wrestling him to brush those fangs are paying off!

As a prelude to this story, I have to mention that I've taught Geordie to nod his head when he means "yes" when someone asks him a question. (Ex. Do you want to go outside? Do you want to do tricks? Do you want to play? He'll nod his head "yes" to the one he wants to do.)

After the incident at the sewing table, I realized what Geordie had been saying all those times he was fussy and barky with me: he wanted me to lift him so that he could see something. The next day, he did it again, so I lifted him to see my sewing, then he was quiet.

On the next day, he was fussing and barking again. This time, he wanted me to lift him to the back door so that he could look out and sniff through the screened, upper portion. I did this for a few minutes, then put him down. He came back wanting more. So, I held him up for a little while longer, then put him down. He kept coming to me and telling me he wanted me to lift him. I said "No, we're done with that for a while". The whole time I'm talking to him, he is vigorously nodding his head "Yes!" I knew that teaching him to talk would eventually lead to him arguing with me!

The other day, I sat down at my sewing table to do some work. Geordie seemed restless, and in a few minutes, started "talking", growling and barking at me. I figured he wanted to play, or needed to go out, so I put down my work and asked him what he wanted. He kept walking backwards, and getting more and more frustrated with his "Arf"s. Finally, I asked him, "Do you want me to pick you up so you can see what I am doing?" He calmly got up, walked over to my table and stood there with his shoulders braced like he does when I lift him. I couldn't believe that what he wanted was to see what I do! After I showed him my tools and told him their names, he laid down and let me work.

It reminded me of how earlier this year, I was knitting a sweater for my Mom. When he saw me knitting, he kept reaching up with his paws for my work. He pestered me until I got down on the floor with him and showed him how I moved the yarn from one needle to the other. It wasn't enough to know that I did it, he wanted to see how.

To be honest, I don't think I've ever met a human male who was so interested in my work.

Poor Geordie had a bad day at school this week. There is a Chesapeak Bay Retriever in the class, and Geordie is afraid of him. First this dog, then the two angry spaniels growled at him. I could see that he was upset. Even more so when I had to put him in a kennel right next to the big dog. When I tried to put him in the kennel, he grabbed hold of me with all four paws. I could feel his claws digging into me like a cat will if you hold it over water. He cowered the whole three minutes he was in the kennel, and when I took him out, he wouldn't let me put him down.
After I got him calmed down somewhat, we went off to a corner to practice tricks while we waited our turn to walk the course. I went through the usual, Sit, Down, Roll Over....then I decided to ask him some "yes" "no" questions so we could practice that. I asked him several things, and when I came to "Do you want a hug?" , he nodded a big YES! I was so surprised since Geordie isn't a snuggly pup. He must have really been shaken by those growly dogs.

Normally he barks his head off and rushes at the dogs around us. On Wednesday, he was well-mannered and did everything I asked him to.
In my family, my brother is the rich, successful offspring, and I am the Billy Carter offspring. He got another promotion at work this week and is rather a big wig now.

However...One day, he was getting ready for work and was filling his new travel mug for the trip to the office. He poured in the coffee and pushed the lid on. He then went to take a drink and spilled coffee all over his clothes. Drat! So he went upstairs and changed.

Once again, he filled the cup with coffee and pushed on the lid. This time he pushed really hard, then went to take a sip...and got coffee all over his clothes.

Again he went upstairs to change, worried because he was running out of suits. So, he again poured the coffee. This time he pushed the lid on really, really, REALLY hard, then took a sip. Again, coffee all over his clothes.

Trying to figure out what was wrong with this blasted cup, he looked at it to find...it was a screw top.

Ha! Ha! Ha! What does this have to do with my dog? Nothing. I just wanted to embarass my brother. (Remember, he's the smart one.)

I went to the vet on Monday, and it was GREAT! I love the vet's office. I remembered everyone there, and I was sure that they all wanted to pet me if I could only get closer to them. Mommy didn't agree, and she kept making me sit down. I didn't keep quiet, though. I barked and howled the whole time.

While I was there, I met my cousin. He was only 4 months old, but I growled and barked at him like he was a squirrel. He growled too. I could tell we would be great friends if only we could get closer. Once again, Mommy didn't agree.

You should have heard me when they clipped my nails. I didn't just whimper, I screamed bloody murder. You would have thought they were pulling my teeth the way I screamed. Was I hurt? No. I just don't care to have my paws held like that.

Geordie had his first blackout recently. We lost our electricity for a few hours. He was so excited, you would have thought I took him to Doggie Disneyland. He loves to chase reflections and shadows to begin with, and with everyone having to use flashlights, he was in heaven.

Since there wasn't anything else to do, we went out in the yard and watched fireflies. When bedtime came, he didn't want to come in, and he complained when he had to go to his kennel. Between this and the recent holiday, Geordie is going to think he is supposed to be out all night in the summer.

Yesterday at Obedience School, Geordie was introduced to wheelchairs and walkers so that he would be better prepared to meet folks in hospitals and the like. While he was fine with the wheelchair, he was afraid of the walker.

Today, there was a lady walking down the street, using a walker. I called Geordie over the the front door and pointed it out to him, saying there was nothing to be afraid of. We waved and went about our day. A couple of minutes later, a very worried nurse went running down the street. Here, the lady with the walker was a patient with Alzheimers from the nursing home down the street. I felt bad, like we should have realized and done something to help instead of just waving.

I took Geordie to Obedience Class today (we're working toward him getting his CGC). Anyway, when we got there, the bull terrier in the class had messed on one side of the room. So, I took Geordie to the other side for warm-ups. Then he poo'd too! Geordie has never poo'd indoors before. While I was cleaning that up, a huskie came in and messed too. I was wondering, do dogs synchronize these things? Is it like humans who can feel sick from the smell of someone else being sick?

So many people tell you of how terrified their dogs of fireworks and loud noises. I wasn't sure what to expect from Geordie when a fireworks holiday finally came along.

I was so surprised that not only wasn't Geordie afraid, but he LIKES fireworks! If seemed that every family in the neighborhood bought some this year, and Geordie dragged me outside to go look at them. He ran from one corner of the yard to the other so he could look at what all the neighbors were doing. By the time we came in, he was an exhausted but very happy pup.

Today was the day that Geordie discovered that the pet store has toys. One of the things on my list was a new loofa dog for him. The display for them was at the check out. I picked out a blue one that I liked, and a cream one that looked like the one he had before. I held them both up for him and asked which he wanted. He took one look at the cream one and started that "oooooh" cry they have when they see a friend. Ok, we'll get the cream one. The woman in line behind us just laughed and laughed.
At the checkout, Geordie stood up on his back legs, trying to be as tall as he could to see what was going on. After ringing up the toy, the cashier handed it to Geordie. He was SO happy that he trotted out of the store with his head high and his new toy weiner dog (that's bigger than he is) in his mouth. He got a lot of "Awww"s today.
