Today is Chinese New Year's Eve and mom has been busy preparing a feast for tonight and tomorrow. I hope I get to taste some of the goodies.

According to the Chinese calendar, 2009 is the Year of the Earth OX (January 26, 2009 - February 13, 2010). The Chinese calendar is based on solar and lunar cycles so the new year falls on a different day of the Western solar calendar each year.

Here's what's in store for us this year:
The OX year is a conservative year, one of traditions and values. This is not a year to be outrageous. A slow but steady year.

This OX year will bring stability and growth where patience and diligence pays off.

This is a year of Harvest - when we reap what we have sown. Take care of business this year, do not let things slide.

If you were born in the year of the RAT

This year is a stable year for family life and will be a joyful year. Career wise the rats will take on more responsibilities and will feel the pressure of the extra duties. A good year of steady progress.

If you were born in the year of the TIGER

This is the year for keeping a low profile, tigers. Because of the slow pace of the OX year, it will be a frustrating time for you. You like things to be move quicker, you will need to show restraint.

If you were born in the year of the RABBIT

The year of the OX is well suited to the rabbit nature. The slower pace of this year will see you spending more time with friends and family. A good year to upgrade your home, or for buying or selling a house.

If you were born in the year of the DRAGON

In business and in romance your word for this year is integrity. Keep your head down and you will make steady progress this year. Established relationships will be comfortable and easy during this year of the OX. A slow but sure progress will be made.

If you were born in the year of the SNAKE

A very good year for Snakes! The steady pace of the OX year is well suited to the snake person. Act on an opportunity - this is your year.

If you were born in the year of the HORSE

Although you are rearing to surge ahead, this is another year of caution for the horse. Not a good year to strike out in new directions, consolidate your positions instead. On the brighter side, Love will bring comfort this year.

If you were born in the year of the SHEEP

The Ox is the direct opposite of the sheep, therefore expect challenges in all areas this year. Keep a low profile.

If you were born in the year of the MONKEY

This is a year of moderate progress for monkeys. Work will slow down this year allowing the monkey more personal time. It also allows for quality time with friends and family.

If you were born in the year of the ROOSTER

Great opportunities for rooster this year. A good time to recoup losses. You will make great progress at work, reaping rewards of your labor. Emotional ties bring joy. Your prestige and reputation increase.

If you were born in the year of the DOG

A year for dogs to keep a low profile. Put more attention into matters at home, spending quality time with loved ones. The simple pleasures will bring happiness this year.

If you were born in the year of the PIG

A year for the pig to follow his/her instinct, laying foundations for the future. This is a bright and hopeful year for the pig. Do not take unnecessary risks though.

Last night my human brother Oliver went for his Middle School graduation. It was such a beautiful day as all the graduates gathered at the school dressed in their finest. I wasn't allowed to go but when I went out for my evening walkie I saw a bunch of good looking kids. The boys were dressed in tuxs and suits and the girls had on beautiful prom dresses. It looked like there was a wedding at the school.

Mom and dad were beaming with pride when they learned that Oliver won the prestigious award for Academic Excellence along with a school medal for all the hard work he did. It was a long night and then they had a party for the graduates. It's called a PROM. There was food and drinks and of course lots of dancing. I wish I could have gone but mom said "no dogs allowed" and besides there's a mean old Principal there who does not like dogs. Tim had a run in with her and he called her the wicked witch of Silver Creek (that's the name of the school).

Oliver finally got home after 11 pm. Dad was already in bed because he had to work the next morning but mom went to pick him up and they chatted about the big night. He had a lot of fun and even danced with a few girls. It was a very memorable evening and now he gets to enjoy the summer before heading off to high school.

We lost our Grandma

Things have changed at home for the past few weeks. I wasn't exactly sure what was happening. First, mom and dad left in a real hurry one day and didn't come home for a few days. It seemed like eternity to me. I was being a good bichon and guarded the house in their absence. My human brothers did try to comfort me but I missed mom and dad a lot. When they finally arrived home, I was so excited. I started to bark and do the blitz.

Mom was real stressed out and I did my best to cheer her up. Then we learned that one of my human grandma was not doing well. I think that's why mom and dad have been so sad. Dad had to rush back to Montreal and we later learned that grandma passed away. When pets pass away, they go to Rainbow Bridge and when humans pass on they go to Heaven.

Mom has been crying a lot. I'm trying my best to cheer her up but I just can't seem to plug up the tears. I even told her that when she cries it makes me cry and my tear stains will make me look awful. Dad is coming home today so maybe he can work his magic on her.

I overheard mom talking to the kennel lady this morning. I have a feeling they are going away again. Oh well, I guess I'll have to be brave and try to enjoy myself. Maybe I'll get to meet some new friends.

Only 4 days left until Valentine's Day. Mom said it's the day of LOVE and there's no shortage of that in the Clubhouse. As a matter of fact, Reggie White and Camry are a couple now. Ellie Mae and Torrey have been a couple for awhile. It's so nice to see everyone falling in love. Mom said that Cupid has been very busy. He/she is the little fellow that goes around shooting his/her arrow that infects us with the love bug. I'm not sure if I buy that silly story but it sure sounds good to me. Check out our BLC Valentine Slideshow to see all our Bichon Valentines sending messages to one another. Then of course, don't forget to drop me a kiss at my KISSING BOOTH. Have a great Valentine everyone!

It's been an emotional week for a lot of our BLC buddies as we mourned the loss of Auntie Mary's JR who is now looking down on all his friends from Rainbow Bridge. A lot of tears have been shed but we hope time will heal the wounds and Auntie Mary will open her heart to love another fluff. I just know in my heart that there is a little boy or girl that will light up Auntie Mary's life again. We all know bichons are great listeners so he or she will be able to hear all of JR's tales and follow in his pawsteps.

Some of our friends attended a Memorial Service for JR on Monday, January 21st. We lit candles and said some nice prayers. I watched mom as she read this poem "A Dog For Jesus" and then she glanced over at me. She came over and gave me the biggest and longest hug. It made me feel all fuzzy inside.

A DOG FOR JESUS

(Where dogs go when they die)

I wish someone had given Jesus a dog.

As loyal and loving as mine.

To sleep by His manger and gaze in His eyes

And adore Him for being divine.

As our Lord grew to manhood His faithful dog,

Would have followed Him all through the day.

While He preached to the crowds and made the sick well

And knelt in the garden to pray.

It is sad to remember that Christ went away.

To face death alone and apart.

With no tender dog following close behind,

To comfort its Master's Heart.

And when Jesus rose on that Easter morn,

How happy He would have been,

As His dog kissed His hand and barked it's delight,

For The One who died for all men.

Well, the Lord has a dog now, I just sent Him mine,

The old pal so dear to me.

And I smile through my tears on this first day alone,

Knowing they're in eternity.

Day after day, the whole day through,

Wherever my road inclined,

Four feet said, "Wait, I'm coming with you!"

And trotted along behind.

Author: Rudyard Kipling

Now that JR is settled at Rainbow Bridge, his buddies must all move on with their lives to make their mommies and daddies happy. After all, that's what we do best so we must live up to our reputation. JR would not have it any other way. Just look up to the heaven's skies and you'll get your answer. JR...you will live in our hearts as we remember all the good times we've shared in the Bichon Lovers Clubhouse.

Today is October 29th and it's my Woofie Day today. Humans call it BIRTHDAY...the day you were born.

I am officially 4 years old today but mom said in human years I'm older than that. I don't feel old at all so I'm not sure what she's talking about. This morning my human brothers sang "Happy Birthday" to me. It sure was noisy but I felt very special and loved. Thanks guys! Yesterday my brother Oliver baked me some banana pupcakes. Boy, it make the house smell nice. I had my snout in the air sniffing away. As a pre-celebration to my Woofie Day, mom couldn't resist giving me one to try. It was a new recipe she got off the world wide web. It was DELICIOUS so I thank whoever posted that recipe. 4 paws UP!!!! I'm quite sure I'll get one later on today.

Of course, mom couldn't resist taking a picture of me in my party hat (see above picture). See all those banana pupcakes? Well, I'm more than willing to share with all my fluffer friends so drop by and you can have one.

Bark to all you fluffs later!

Hey, mom said today is the first day of Spring. It's starting to warm up here and the snow is all gone. I can finally pee on the grass. The problem is we keep finding little gifts on some lots and mom isn't too happy about that She hates it when I try to sniff it. The weekend is supposed to be really nice so I'm hoping that mom and dad takes me to the park so I can blitz to my hearts delight.

I got to tell you what happened last night. Dad took me out for a late night walk last night. The air was crisp and the sky was clear. I was loving it. On our way home, my eyes caught a little dog. It was slightly smaller than me and dad called her a shitzu. I instantly stopped to check her out. She was cute!!! As we got a little closer and I proceeded to sniff her out, all of a sudden she growled and snapped at me. Dad quickly pulled me away just in the nick of time. He wasn't the least bit happy. The shitzu's owner apologized and left quickly. I've got to learn that not all dogs like me...was it my look, my smell or WHAT?

Anyway, I'm fine...no harm done! Enjoy the day but make sure you stay out of the mud puddles or else you'll end up in the bathtub.

It's been real nippy in the morning when I go out for my walks. The air is crisp and sometimes the grass is crunchy. Mommy says the colder weather is here and frost developes. All the trees and bushes around me are so colorful.

We just finished celebrating Thanksgiving here in Canada. Our American friends will be doing the same thing towards the end of November. Halloween is also soon approaching and of course Mommy had all sorts of ideas of dressing me up for the occasion. I don't mind it so much because I know I will always get a nice treat or two out of the ordeal. This year she decided to turn me into a Bichon Pilgrim. Here's a picture of me sporting my pilgrim cape and hat.

Hey fellow bichons!

Hope everyone is behaving themselves. As for me, I guess a lot of you heard that I got into BIG trouble yesterday. Luckily for me, there was a happy ending. Here's my side of the story.

I was minding my own business yesterday when daddy came downstairs to get his coffee. After his morning coffee, he went upstairs to use the bathroom. He left this white thing which looked like a chocolate bar on the night stand. Being the inquisitive bichon that I am, I had to go over and check it out. I sniffed it and then licked it....no smell and no taste. It fitted perfectly in my mouth. It was very slippery so I had to chomp down on it to get a grip. I wanted to bring it down to show mommy but then all of a sudden I heard the bathroom door open. I had to hide!!! I knew daddy would get mad at me for touching his baby. That's what I heard mommy calling it. I ran as fast as I could and waited at the stairs. Then all of a sudden I heard a loud yell....OH OHHHHHHH. Daddy caught me red handed and the evidence was all over his baby. He yelled for mommy who came to look. Mommy gave me a stern stare. I just wanted to hide. I knew I was in BIG trouble. It turned out that daddy's baby had a name and it was called iPOD. Mommy was nice enough to defend me saying that I didn't know any better because I was a dog. Sometimes being a dog has its advantages and being cute definitely helps when you get into trouble. Mommy said we were both to blame because daddy should not have left iPOD on the night table where I could reach it and I should not have gone near it.

To make a long story short, daddy went to the Apple Store and the nice people there replaced the one I hurted. I want to thank the nice people for saving my skin. Mommy said who knows what daddy would have done to me. There could have been a nice bichon rug but luckily for me all was forgiven. I hope I never get into that type of trouble again. Mommy had a big lecture for the family. The bottom line was....don't leave anything valuable that you treasure dearly out where little paws and mouths can get it!!!!

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

My day was going so well until mommy came home around 4 pm today. She had gone out to do visits and was running late. She busted through the front door yelling for me to come. I woke from my nap wondering if there was a fire in the house. She was in a real panic. When I didn't come to her immediately, she made one of my human brothers bring me up. Can't a dog sleep around here?!!! We went on a short ride to the vet's office. I knew this wasn't good. I had a vague memory of my last visit there and if I remember correctly, the lady in the office gave me 2 shots in the bum and I didn't like that one bit!!!! When we arrived, I did some exploring around the office. There were a lot of new and interesting scents and I went crazy. I sniffed every corner of the rooms and that distracted me for a bit. Then we were let into an office and at that point I knew something was not right and I let mommy know. I tried to be brave as my tail went down. After 5 minutes of waiting, Dr. Ewing and a vet student came in. They were very nice but I was suspicious of them. They offered me treats....another sign that something BAD was about to happen. I ain't buying that trick!!!! After they checked me over to make sure I was in tip top shape, they held my head. OH, OH....you know what that means!!!! I felt this pinch in my left bum. I didn't bark or yelp but I did whine a bit. Then they turned me around and did the same thing on the other side of my bum. What did I ever do to deserve this? Mommy tried to comfort me and told me what a good boy I was after it was all over. She said it was for my own good....YEAH, right....what does she know?!!! They offered me more treat and I was worried they were going to stick me in the bum again. I stayed in my corner as mommy chatted with Dr. Ewing. She said I don't have to see her until it's time for my heartworm medicine. I hope it doesn't mean I will get another shot in the bum because if it does, I'm not going to be a very happy bichon!

Today while mommy was outside taking out the garbage, she saw a dog run by. At first she thought it was running along side a female jogger but shortly afterwards the dog came dashing by our front yard. I noticed the dog right away and got very excited. I thought perhaps s/he had come to play with me! I was barking and squirming inside the house while mommy was trying to catch the dog. It looked EXACTLY like me!!! After a few minutes of running around playing doggy tag, mommy finally got a hold of the little dog. It turned out to be a case the missing dog caper. Mommy took one of my leashes and put it on the lost dog and also bought me out to meet our new friend. It was indeed another BICHON. Mommy checked the collar but it did not have a name of phone number of the owners. She immediately called the vet's office and shortly afterwards they were able to tell us exactly where he lived. His name is Bailey and he lived just a few houses from us. Who would have thought! I have another friend who is also a Bichon and she lives behind us and her name is Mindy. I tried to play with Bailey but he wasn't very interested. I guess he was homesick. Mommy gave Bailey some water and we shared a couple of treats. Bailey stayed at my house for about an hour or so before mommy and daddy took him home. It was nice having Bailey here but I still like being King of the household.

Tonight mommy and daddy took me on a car ride. It was such a thrill to hang my head out the window and let my ears flop in the wind. I could smell so many interesting smells around me....AHHHHH They also picked up some gas for the car. I overheard mommy say that the price of gas is ridiculous and if it continues to go up they may have to sell me.....GEEZ, I hope she was just kidding around with daddy!!!!!

We took a quick walk along the creek. I really enjoyed it. It was kind of chilly and it got dark so fast so we went to grab some coffee and donuts. While we were there, I met 2 dogs. One big and one small. We played with each other and before I knew it mommy said it was time to head on home. I just love going on car rides with mommy and daddy. As long as I'm with them, I am a happy camper!

Greetings from La Belle Province!

I've been enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of Montreal. It was a long drive down but I was a very good boy in the car. I slept most of the time while daddy was behind the wheel.

On Monday, mommy put me in her doggy bag and we all went downtown. We visited the malls and walked along St. Catherine Street. I met some homeless people and felt so sad. One of the homeless men had a dog and he didn't look very happy. I am so blessed to have mommy and daddy take such good care of me and we live in a nice house. Dogs like me who have a good home must count their blessings. I got a lot of attention while I was relaxing in my doggy bag. We went to the McGill Bookstore where daddy bought a new top and Chris bought a very expensive hat. I guess I better be a good boy and not chew on that or otherwise I will be in the doghouse for a very long time!

We also went to a bookstore called Chapters. I rested while daddy read some magazines. It was nice and comfortable in the cool air conditioning. A lady came up to daddy and asked if she could pet me. It was nice to meet kind people.

One evening I had to spend time in my crate and I was not very happy. I didn't like to be alone and I was afraid mommy and daddy would forget me but happily they returned and showered me with hugs and kisses. I told them "never leave me along like that again!!!!!!!!!!!!" I hope they understood me.

I have been having a ball playing with Sandy. She is a schauzer and her mommy and mine are good friends. We chased each other and rolled in the grass. I can't wait to come back again to play with Sandy...she's the best!

I woke up this morning feeling all fuzzy inside. I'm not sure whether it was from a lack of sleep or all the excitement last night. Mommy and daddy took me to my first firework exhibit last night in celebration of Canada Day (July 1st). There were so many people there sprawled out on the grass along the lake. It was also pretty cold which I found very strange because I thought it was summer. I overheard mommy complaining that she was cold. She held me tight to try to keep warm. It was so cold I was shivering a bit also. There were families, teens, children and other doggies there enjoying the outdoor. Finally around 10 pm the show started. Everyone was getting a bit weary of the long wait. I was busy exploring the grounds with daddy. I met a few other canine friends and we sniffed and exchanged nose rubs. I have never seen such a great display of lights in the sky. The entire night sky lit up with all sorts of specks. It was also very smoky and noisy. I was brave though as mommy reassured me that everything was a ok! By the time the show was over I was pooped out. We got back to our car and I zonked out in the backseat. Then we reached home and mommy gave me a little snack for being such a brave boy. Geez, I sure hope I get to see another firework because it was the coolest thing. The best part for me of course was meeting all the people and dogs at the park. I can't wait until the next Canada Day fireworks!!!

BELATED CANADA DAY GREETINGS!

WHEWWWW....pant, pant!!!!!!!!! It's been so hot here the past week and I overheard mommy saying that this heatwave will continue into next week. I'm so lucky I live in an air conditioned house where I can stay cool all day long. As much as I enjoying going out to do exploration during my daily walks, it's just TOO much with this fur coat. I think mommy is going to ship me off to the groomer this week to get a haircut.

Tonight we went out for an evening stroll in the neighborhood. Mommy bought along my small ball and we played fetch in the fenced in yard at the school where the kindergarten kiddies play. I love chasing after the bouncy ball. It gives me a good workout. I had to have a lot of water in between fetches because I started to get very hot.

On our way back home, we met my friend Mindy who was also out for an evening stroll. Mindy is also a bichon frise and while she played "hard to get" I knew she liked me because I noticed her tail was wagging in happiness. We had a nice sniff and nose to nose greeting while mommy chatted away. Then it was time to head on home. What a fun filled evening I had!

Tonight after mommy and daddy had their supper, they took me along for a car ride. We drove to Glen Williams which is a small quaint town next door. We went there last summer and it was so beautiful. We always go to the same spot which is along the banks of the Credit River. It's just a little brook with streaming water and we took a nice evening stroll. I really enjoyed it...the view, the fresh air and of course the company. Oliver and Jonathan tossed pebbles into the water to see how far they can pitch it. I had other things on my mind; like smelling all the new smell. We also met a few joggers and they came over to pet me. I just love meeting people. It gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling!

We spent about 15 minutes exploring and then daddy decided to go grab some dessert. We all went into the van and headed to Diary Queen. There were lots of people there and a car load of teenagers stopped to admire me. One of the girls said, "hey there's a bichon frise" and I smiled at her. While I waited with mommy in the car, daddy and the boys went inside to get something to eat. Another man came by and he said I was so cute. His little boy came over to pet me. Then daddy returned with 3 ice cream sundaes in tow. It looked mighty yummy. While I sat on the floor, I waited patiently hoping to get a taste of it. Finally mommy rewarded me and gave me a taste. It was different but very yummyyyyyyy.

Today mommy invited Molly (the poodle) over for a doggie play date. It was a beautiful day and we both chased each other in the back yard and then got all thirsty and had to drink lots of water to cool ourselves down. I love being outside but when the sun is out full blast I usually get very hot and need to find shelter in the shade to rest. While mommy and Molly's mommy were chatting away, we were exploring the yard for bunny bombs...they sure are yummy. Then, of course, mommy saw us and put an end to that....frown!!! All in all, I had a super duper day playing with my friend Molly. I hope mommy sets up another play date soon. I just love company! smile
