It has been a week now since our darling Heidie girl left our sides and made her trip over the rainbow bridge. Eleven years to the date of when she first arrived with us, she made her special trip. We would have wished for more time, but that would have only caused our sweet honey to endure more pain, not fair for such a lovely soul as our sweet Heidie. We could tell you about all the ailments our poor Heidie suffered over the past few years as age caught up to her, but we would prefer to share with you some of the lovely moments that we had with her through the years, because those moments are truly what speak loudest about her life.

Heidie was never a ham. She was always a gentle fawn of a creature. Even in her beginning days of sharing time with Starbuck when he came to us as a puppy, Heidie maintained her lady like quality. She did attempt to teach him right from wrong, but she was never overbearing with him, and it was her gentleness, that we believe allowed him to continue to be a sweet little boy, even at 6yrs old, as we speak this day. Heidie came to us with her name, and it was well deserving. For most of her life, she would prefer to hide, and avoided having her photo taken at all costs. The photos we have shared with you here, barely caught a glimpse of Heidie's soul. She had the sweetest eyes, and they always portrayed the innocence that was truly her nature. When she would look into your eyes, you knew she was listening and understanding whatever conversation you were having with her. Heidie's favorite time was spent laying in the sunlight. When the wind would blow gently, you could actually see a true smile on her soft face. When she would walk, she had a gentle little stepping motion, just like a deer, her tiny feet would prance lightly with each step. When Starbuck was a puppy, she would make a stearn bark that sounded somewhat like a "BAUCK" noise, but she never fought with him or went beyond a bark. As Starbuck grew, she was content with letting him be the Alpha Dog. She had taught him to come to eat when she barked, which Starbuck took over as she aged. She did not mind sharing a bed beside this young man, but they were never mates. Heidie was always the motherly matriarch of the pair.

In her final days, Heidie did not eat very often. Starbuck was always their dinner bell. We would put down the food in separate bowls, and he would never eat from Heidie's. We believe he knew as we did that it was important she eat, and his daily regimen involved barking when the food arrived, and waiting for Heidie to come to the bowls. Before he would begin to eat, if Heidie didn't raise her head, or get out of bed, Starbuck would bark once or twice more, and then lay down with his head in his paws, waiting until she would make her way over. The first day after Heidie passed, Starbuck still barked for Heidie to make her way to the bowls. He looked for her, and it was my greatest sadness, that she was not there to respond. He did not eat easily, and it was difficult but we tried as best as we could to explain to him what had occurred. We have spent the last week, babying him and attempting to help him restart his life. We know he will have moments of grieving, just as we will, and Heidie, will never be far from our minds. She was always our angel, and it is only fitting that she has now replaced her crown, with a halo.
We will always love you Heidie-- we hope you have a gentle wind with sunshine on your shoulders now to keep your smile. Love Meme, Daddy, Starbuck and Cassie

Last week Meme took a special trip to the Petco to buy important dog items for our glorious outing to the "Cove"... Jarrell Cove, of course.
Its a tiny island off the Puget Sound in the state of Washington.
Naturally Meme's shopping adventure was more for my benefit than that peasant hound Star-whatever his name is... but imagine my surprise when she returned with a new pink crown for me. I could hardly contain myself and have felt the need to prance around to show it off for a better part of the week now. Meme calls it an E-Collar and says its meant to keep me from thrashing myself when I get bitten by mosquitos and those pesky peasant pests called fleas--- imagine that? Why would anyone ever call it a collar when it quite obviously is a delightful crown! AND MORE IMPORTANTLY--- WHY would ANYONE ever think I could possibly come in contact with FLEAS!!
My blue blood is of course simply too sweet an royally rich for the likes of those scoundrels!

Never the less--- A Queen must most definitely have and wear a crown and I am wearing mine with pride. When we drove to Washington I thought it was especially important that any local royals there should be aware of my visit, so it was of course necessary that I wear it. Little did I know it was a peasant resort we would be vacationing at! We stayed in tiny huts called tents, and oh my dogness, I was relagated to spending the night within a dogs length of that peasant hound servant of Doggy Daddy's. I could barely contain myself when the meals were served. I found myself scarfing down morsels of food called weiners... I must confess, they had a slight smokey flavor from being roasted over an open fire-- one might even say they were quite YUMMY!

Alas, I digress--- this camping as the peasants refer to it, was actually not all that bad. We did see some very beautiful travel spots and I slept fairly peacefully on the ride home. Meme says she can't believe I have taken so well to wearing a crown. But I say--- a crown is but a sign of royalty--- Why shouldn't a queen such as I love one??!
pip- pip, Pups!!

well how do you like that! The rascal Starbuck was named for Diary Pick of the Day Sunday while we were on our vacation to the doggie Hotel in Seattle.
First there was his special trip to the Groomer, then his TWO trips to see MY cutie vet doctor for Neuterville and shots, then he gets the pick of the hotel room and now he gets DOGGIE DIARY!

This means WAR! I am going to rage an all out attack on this pup!
They say "Every Dog has his day..." and this 'Queen D' is gonna have hers too I tell you!
Of course I guess that means I will have to be more cooperative when Meme wants to take my picture, but oh well, certain things must be sacrificed to win the War!

Meme said I should start a column about doggy adoptions. I was brought to Meme and Doggy Daddy through the Last Chance Rescue of Michigan and Meme always said it was the most fortunate day of her and Doggy Daddy's lives and they are so happy they found me. I know they love me and I know they wanted me because they went looking for me and even when I snapped at Doggy Daddy they still said I was their girl and took me home.

Maybe seeing some rescue doggies with good family relationships will encourage other families to adopt from shelters too. Pet stores are just one option for finding pets to love, but it should not be the only option. There are many many wonderful doggies, full-grown and puppies that need homes.

I am going to begin writing a column here, called the "Doggie Dozen". You will find 12 doggies that need homes with happy families. This is your chance to have your family connect with a great new friend that your heart will always find love from. I will also list shelter names that need support, so if you can't adopt a new friend, maybe you will adopt a shelter to help. You can see a small picture of them in my page above or use their link to get the full details.

Meme loves happy endings and she is always reading stories on the internet that she shares with us. This was a great happy ending story for a couple of pups out in Wisconsin, so I am sharing it here with my friends today. It made my snoopy-smile shine through!

Lost Lab brothers meet at dog daycare
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- They were called Wallace and Gromit, a couple of abandoned yellow Labrador retriever siblings who wound up at the Coulee Region Humane Society. The pups were 5 months old last June when they were adopted out, but to separate homes. Months later, Pat Kucera at Diggity Dog Daycare noticed two yellow Labs named Levi and Cooper would "play like crazy" every time they got the chance during visits to his facility.
"They love playing chase, ring around the picnic table and face wrestling on the couches," Kucera said.
When he mentioned their behavior to their respective owners, Cyndy Lamb remembered the other pup she never forgot - the one that was with Cooper when she took him home from the humane society.
She asked Denice Mack, owner of Levi, about her dog's past and found out she too adopted her dog last June.
"When she said he was 5 months old when she got him, my heart stopped," Lamb said.
"I was so excited," Mack said, "because when we adopted (Levi), we knew there was another yellow Lab out there, and we wanted to find him and get together with him."
Mack and her husband Curt said they're hoping to set up play dates outside the daycare for the two long-lost Labs.
"I'm definitely going to take them up on that," Lamb said.

MeMe had to have a serious talk with us today. She said she wanted to sit us down and prepare us for the hard cold truth.
It seems that human folks in ancient Egypt saw rabbits as a sign of fertility because naturally those darned things are always having so many babies in Spring. Over the years, in the early 1700s, when that belief travelled to Europe, it was combined with another thought that eggs are also a symbol of fertility because they are the beginning of new life and bring birth. The German folks who were Christians started a tradition at Easter time of children setting out their caps or bonnets, filled with straw to collect colored hard cooked eggs left in them on Easter morning. It was meant to show that Jesus Christ was reborn with the resurrection on that day. In the 1800s Germany naturally being a big maker of chocolate soon added chocolate candies in the shape of bunnies to that early "Easter Basket" and before you know it, In the 1930s, we in America joined in on that tradition, even including Jelly Beans in our baskets because they resemble the shape of an egg.
So here is where the dreaded truth comes in. Doggie people cannot have chocolate easter bunnies! Now why on earth would they go and create a holiday that we cannot even have the best part of?? ShEEsh! Ya see chocolate is not a good thing for us doggies because if we get even a taste, it starts us craving it... If we eat a little we become determined to eat more and in some cases it can cause seizures or even kill us! Meme said chocolate is kind of like mushrooms for human folks. Some are worse than others. White chocolate is the least dangerous because it doesn't have so much of what can poison us, but baking chocolate chips like she uses sometimes to make fudge and cookies has a whole lot and it wouldn't take much to harm a small dog and still wasn't good for the big ones either.
MeMe said not to fear though... She said she can guarantee that when the Easter Bunny comes April 8th this year, we will find some extra special treats tucked inside our baskets. This will be that pesky Starbuck's first Easter with us, but I remember how MeMe gave me some tasty hard boiled eggs out of the basket last year. OOhhh YummY! I just love eggs any way I can get them, but those hardboiled ones are a treat, something to really sink your teeth into... nummy-nummy! So remember doggies, leave the chocolate bunnies for your human kiddies to enjoy, wouldn't want any of my friends gettin' sick!

Hee Hee Hee, Ho Ho HO!
That rascal has been into all sorts of trouble these days and MeeMee and Doggy Daddy have finally saw through to that fur rug's real personality!
MeeMee gave Daddy a long long while to decide whether or not there should be any more rascals created for properity, and Daddy finally decided that the rascal is a menace and there is only room on this planet for one.
Doggy Daddy scheduled an appointment for Starbuck's neuter-time. I sat really quiet on the princess bed while Daddy was talking with the vet lady. ShEEsh the way the menace was acting you would think he thought they were making an appointment to give him a medal or something. That rascal is completely clue--less!
All he can talk about is how they are making him save his peeshooter for our trip to Seattle... Again Hee Hee Hee, HO Ho HO! I mean really, like we need him to mark the path or something. So me in my infinite wisdom, because you know all rescued sweeties are spayed or neutered; Well, I think I will just sit back and watch the show for the next couple of weeks until the boy gets his "special award". It ought to be a huge surprise for that rascal! Awww... okay I am not really that evil. Maybe I will tell him in a day or two... OOOOh Yeah that would be even better! Then he would have two weeks to contemplate what this neuter deal is really all about... Hee HEE Hee, Ho Ho HO! Hmmm ... MeeMee said the leprechans must have dropped by a bit early this year... I seem to be full of mischief and a few too many HeeHee Hees... Oh well a bit of the blarney neva' hurt anyone dontcha know!
Next time we visit I will tell ya about our visit to the Emerald City!

Ever seen that people movie, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"?
The week before Meemee and Doggie Daddy put the Christmas Tree up, there was plenty of discussion going on. I distinctly remember Doggie Daddy saying, "We will just have to skip the tree this year, because you know that Starbuck will knock it down and destroy all the ornaments!"
Leave it to that dastardly boy dog to doom our sacred temple to Christmas!!
But my Meemee stuck to her guns like all strong women of power do, and of course me being the reigning princess here, I stood right there behind her on all fours, while she said, "Well if he destroys my favorite ornament, he will spend Christmas in a new dog house, because I'll make sure Santa packs him up on his sleigh!"
well, maybe she wasn't quite that angry or strong, but WE still got our way!
and Yeah, we got our beautiful twinkly lighted tree with lots of beautiful silver glittery ornaments and oh everything just smelled so wonderful and looked so yummy when Meemee made the Christmas dinner. I didn't know if we would get anything special to eat, because usually that rascal eats everything before anyone else can get to it, but as it turned out, Meemee and Doggy Daddy went away one day and when they came back they brought in a bag that smelled so tastey I could smell it before they ever came in the door. Meemee took out a small sample for me before she put it in the frig. Oh it was so sweet and yummy and just melted right in my mouth. Of course the rascal had to ruin it by jumping up and down and doing his acrobatics or we might have had more than a sample that day. Luckily it came out again on Christmas day for our special dinner. Doggy Daddy shouted , Praise the Lord and pass the honeybaked and we all ate lots of goodies and more of that special tasting melt in your mouth goodness! Yum Yum... Thank goodness Meemee and Doggy Daddy didnt let the rascal ruin Christmas dinner or our beautiful holiday tree! Oh and Meemee wanted me to say that I got some very nice toys from one of her Michigan friends... yes they were, but of course then the rascal had to slobber on them! I give up! A princess' work is never done--what a peasant!
