A wise man once said "When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight". We choose to remember the day you came into our lives, not the terrible day that you left...

Sweet LuckyLucy celebrates her 12th Birthday/Gotcha Day (3rd at the Bridge) on July 31st. Here's the story of how she joined our family:

"We lost our heart dog, HoneyBunny, quite suddenly in June 2006. At the end of July 2006, we brought a rescue transport, LuckyLucy, home for just one night.

LuckyLucy was laying on a daybed with my husband while he watched TV. Suddenly, LuckyLucy jumped off the daybed and quickly started to dig around underneath, behind a row of storage boxes. She was digging and digging... stretching her paws as far as she could reach along the wall. We could hear her nails scratching frantically on the hardwood floor... we had no idea what on Earth she was doing!

LuckyLucy popped up and jumped back onto the daybed. In her mouth was an empty 2-liter plastic bottle from soda. She proceeded to calmly chew on the bottle until she had the cap off, and then stretched out for a nap.

My husband looked at me and I looked at him... goosebumps running up and down our arms and tears forming in our eyes. That bottle had been left by HoneyBunny... before she became ill, cap dysection had been a favorite past time. HoneyBunny must have pushed the bottle underneath the daybed behind the boxes... possibly to save for later or?

We hadn't planned on expanding our pack so soon, but it was as if HoneyBunny had sent us a message from beyond... "this one... keep this one...". How did LuckyLucy know to jump off the daybed? How did she know what to find and what to do with her find? And why, in the two years that she lived here, did LuckyLucy never play with plastic bottles again--dropping them out of her mouth the instant she was given one? I think only LuckyLucy and HoneyBunny know the answers...

(As luck would have it, Mum was taking some pictures of our "overnight" guest, and captured this amazing incident in two photos shown above.)

Happy Gotcha Day, sweet girl. Today we celebrate your love and the love you gave to all who knew you.

strikes so many of our Dogster friends over time. Sometimes our pals have led a full and happy life when they get the word. Sometimes it strikes when life has barely begun. Some breeds, like Golden Retrievers, have a terrible survival rate. Some pups fight the good fight and win many more years with those who love them. Some pups never get that chance.

So hug your pups and cherish every second with them. Life is too, too short... and the life of dogs even shorter. In the words of Sir Walter Scott

"I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time?"

Well, next week on July 31st will be my 10th Birthday (my 3rd Gotcha Day anniversary) and the first one celebrated at the Bridge. Mum was looking through my photos and shifting some around on my page when she came across two photos that are very, very special. Here's the story:

Back when Joy Ward was writing the Dogster Dog Blog, she asked if anyone had had contact "from beyond the Bridge". Joy posted: "Have you had an experience with a dog who has passed to the Rainbow Bridge? Received a visit from a beloved canine furbaby who has come back to help you or reach you in some way? I’d love to hear from you!"

The story of how we came to keep an As Good as Gold--Golden Retriever Rescue of Northern Illinois rescue transport, LuckyLucy, is about contact from beyond the Bridge:

"We lost our "heart" dog, HoneyBunny, quite suddenly in June 2006. At the end of July 2006, we brought a rescue transport, "Lucky", home for just one night.

Lucky was laying on a daybed with my husband while he watched TV. Suddenly, she jumped off the daybed and quickly started to dig around underneath, behind a row of storage boxes. Lucky was digging and digging... stretching her paws as far as she could reach along the wall. We could hear Lucky's nails scratching frantically on the hardwood floor... we had no idea what on Earth she was doing!

Finally Lucky popped up and jumped back up onto the daybed. In her mouth was an empty 2-liter plastic bottle from soda. Lucky proceeded to calmly chew on the bottle until she had the cap off, and then stretched out for a nap.

My husband looked at me and I at him... goosebumps running up and down our arms and tears forming in our eyes. That bottle had been left by HoneyBunny... before she became ill, cap dysection had been a favorite pasttime. HoneyBunny must have pushed the bottle underneath the daybed behind the boxes... possibly to save it for later or ????

We hadn't planned on expanding our pack so soon, but it was as if HoneyBunny had sent us a message from beyond... "this one... keep this one...". How did Lucky know to jump off the daybed? How did she know what to find and what to do with it? And why in the 2 years that she's lived here has Lucky, now LuckyLucy, never played with plastic bottles again--dropping them out of her mouth the instant she's given one? I think only LuckyLucy and HoneyBunny know the answers...

(Mum was taking some pictures of our "overnight" guest, and captured this amazing incident in the two photos shown above.)

####

We still miss our quirky girl very, very much. We had only two short years with her, but we made sure that she got a lifetime of love from us every second of every day. Happy birthday, baby girl... we love you!

Cancer strikes again in the Golden Retriever community. This time a beautiful, 6yr old Red girl named Marley. Here is the latest news...

------------------------
Well, the liver biopsy did not come back with very good news. It appears the cancer has spread and I have the "bad" version of hysti0cytic sarcoma, which means that there is nothing they can do for me. They will put me on steroids for a bit to hopefully help me feel better enough to eat. Everyone tells me I'm too skinny.

Who would have thought this would be me?

Well, since it is what it is, I have to accept my fate. Despite all my health issues since I was a pup, I consider myself extremely lucky. I picked good parents who took care of my boo boos and sicknesses. They fed me lots and gave me more love than any pup could ever imagine. Who could ask for a better life?

My wish for is that my parents and auntie to try not to be sad. I came into their life for a reason and they for me. It's the way things were meant to be.

To all my friends on Dogster, you have been a blessing for me and my family with all your POPs and prayers. My wish for all of you is to love your humans with all your hearts (like that isn't hard for us Golden s, huh?)

We don't know how long it will be, but when it's time have faith that I will no longer be in pain. I will finally be with my best friend ever...Angel. I can't wait to play bitey ears with her again. :)

...and finally....Teddy. I Love You. You are the cutest boyfriend a girl could ever have. I will watch over you every day and when you are ready, I will be the first one at the Bridge waiting for you. My wish for you is that you live a long and happy life with your loving family.
------------------------------------

Did you know that 1 out of every 3 dogs will get some form of cancer in their lifetime? And 50% of those stricken will die from cancer? And that in our Golden Retriever breed, that number jumps to 75%? Please support Canine Cancer research, and please pray for Marley and her family.

Mum just finished reading "The Darkest Evening of the Year" by author and Golden Retriever-lover Dean Koontz. A Golden Retriever plays an essential part in this latest novel, but that not why we're writing this. One of the characters speaks about the perfect truth of loving dogs...

"Dogs' lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know that the pain is coming, you're going to lose a dog, and there's going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and for the mistakes we make because of those illusions."

Having lost his beloved Golden, Trixie, Dean Koontz speaks from his heart as he perfectly put into words what loving, and losing, dogs is all about.

Yes, my head knows that Goldens are predisposed to various cancers--one out of three get cancer and 75% die from it. But my heart just doesn't understand this insane loss.
Sheba's Corner
Lucky Lucy
August 16th 2008 1:02 pm

It's been a couple years since I last saw my daughter Lucky Lucy but we had reconnected here at Dogster. Oh what a joy that was to know that Lucy still thought of me and was proud of my accomplishments as the house dog at my assisted living community. I was proud of Lucy as well for being such a special girl. It is with great sadness now that I write that sweet Lucy has passed on to the Rainbow Bridge. We animals understand these things so differently than humans, and I know Lucy is in good company with her brother Remo. While I'm not planning on going to join her anytime soon, I know that when it is my time, Lucy will be there waiting for me too.

I wanted to say that Lucy was truly lucky indeed. It's not an easy thing to have to give up your home and family and go to rescue but Lucy found such a wonderful family to love her, shower her with attention, and treat her like the princess she was. Speaking as a wise girl of 14, I can tell you that this pairing up of dogs and families is not quite as random as you might think. I don't know how it works, but we often seem to find our way to the people that need us as much as we need them. We need a home and someone to call our own, and they need that very special kind of love and companionship that only we dogs can give. Lucy knew that and she gave it in spades just like she found a wonderful home and family that gave her all the love she could ever wish for and saw her for the special girl she was. The world's a little sadder place today with the loss of Lucky Lucy, but to Lucy's human mom...don't be surprised if Lucy finds a way to let you know her spirit is still with you. And thank you for taking such great care of my girl. I will miss her too.

Love,
Sheba (Lucy's doggy mom)

We ask that any contributions made in LuckyLucy's memory go to the rescue that saved her life--As Good as Gold--Golden Retriever Rescue of Northern Illinois. Since May 2003, As Good as Gold has rescued over 775 Golden Retrievers. Spoke to the Vet by phone--she said that if Lucy's symptoms worsen, we have to find a way to take her to ER tonight. Remo spent most of the week rolling from one side to the other, and he'd pull his stuffy with him. I could tell it was important to him to have it, so I was a Good girl and didn't take it from him...

Now, it gets even odder... Remo went for a car ride with Mum and Brother, but he hasn't come back yet. I saw Remo's pillowman stuffy today... it's on top of Mum's chest of drawers, with Remo's squeaky Snowman and his "Old Soul" stuffed bone. It's wearing Remo's collar, with the St. Francis medal on it that Bentley sent him. Strange... I thought Remo was wearing his collar when he left... and I know he took his pillowman stuffy with him for the car ride. I stretched and stretched, and scratched and scratched up the front of the dresser, trying to get Remo's toys, but Dad said "No, Lucy, those are Remo's". But Dad, can't I borrow them until he comes home? He won't mind... but Dad just said No.

I guess I'm lucky Dad and Mum didn't get mad about the scratched dresser. They've been pretty low key all week, and Remo's still gone... how odd...

We didn't mean to cause such alarm, we were just trying to bow out privately...so we've edited our post in the hopes you will all understand:

Dearest Friends,

In between coming and going to the vet, we have spent an enormous amount of time on Dogster this past month--time that we now realize should have been spent on the Crew and on Mum and Dad. It has been a difficult, difficult time for us all.

The Crew is currently stable, but all are terminal. We wish to devote whatever time we have left to belly rubs, ear scritches, leg massages and long naps together on the couch--foot and paw intertwined. We will, of course, post any major updates, but won't be stopping by every day to participate in the Groups or Forums. We know our dear Friends will understand our focus.

So, please cross your paws when you think of us and say a prayer for The Terminal Three--The Chicago Crew. And until we meet again in this beautiful Dogster world or over the Bridge, May the Power of the PAW remain with you Forever!

Woofs and Wags, Licks and Love
from the Chicago Crew,

Joy Ward asked in her Dogster Dog Blog if anyone had had contact "from beyond the Bridge". Joy posted: "Have you had an experience with a dog who has passed to the Rainbow Bridge? Received a visit from a beloved canine furbaby who has come back to help you or reach you in some way? I’d love to hear from you!"

This diary entry about how we came to keep a rescue transport, LuckyLucy, is a story of such contact:

"We lost our heart dog, HoneyBunny, quite suddenly in June 2006. At the end of July 2006, we brought a rescue transport, LuckyLucy, home for just one night.

LuckyLucy was laying on a daybed with my husband while he watched TV.
Suddenly, LuckyLucy jumped off the daybed and quickly started to dig around underneath, behind a row of storage boxes. She was digging and
digging... stretching her paws as far as she could reach along the wall. We
could hear her nails scratching frantically on the hardwood floor... we had no
idea what on Earth she was doing!

Suddenly, LuckyLucy popped up and jumped back up onto the daybed. In her mouth was an empty 2-liter plastic bottle from soda. She proceeded to calmly chew on the bottle until she had the cap off, and then stretched out for a nap.

My husband looked at me and I looked at him... goosebumps running up and down our arms and tears forming in our eyes. That bottle had been left by
HoneyBunny... before she became ill, cap dysection had been a favorite pasttime. HoneyBunny must have pushed the bottle underneath the daybed behind the boxes... possibly to save for later or?

We hadn't planned on expanding our pack so soon, but it was as if HoneyBunny had sent us a message from beyond... "this one... keep this one...". How did LuckyLucy know to jump off the daybed? How did she know what to find and what to do with her find? And why in the almost 2 years that she's lived here has LuckyLucy never played with plastic bottles again--dropping them out of her mouth the instant she's given one? I think only LuckyLucy and HoneyBunny know the answers...

(As luck would have it, Mum was taking some pictures of our "overnight" guest, and captured this amazing incident in the two photos shown above.)

My Mom and I both went into rescue almost two years ago. Today I found her again... on Dogster! My Mum thought she was lookin' at ME at first, then she realized it was my MOM!!!

My new Mum and Sheba's new Mom have pawmailed back and forth and filled out our respective stories. Seems Sheba's owner was the Grandpa of my old owner. No wonder Sheba is just PERFECT at her job at the assisted living community! Sheba's owner passed away, so she came to live with me in my outdoor dog run... then MY owner got sent to Iraq and we both got sent into rescue.

Check out my beautiful Mom, Sheba, at http://www.dogster.com/dogs/761843

She's bloomin' gorgeous! Of course, she looks just like ME! hee hee

Remo said: "So, my lil' bro WINston turned 11 yesterday. It's been a pretty stressful year, and we're all so very glad he's still here. OK, ok, that being said...

How COOL was it that Rocky and Sarge sent a box of pressies for WINston and included stuff for LuckyLucy and ME TOO!!!!!!!! We both got this very neat extra large Kong Snugga Wubba, and the funniest ball I've EVER seen--called a Good Cuz--it's hard rubber, squeaky, and it has FEET! How weird is that???

Everyone always makes a big deal about Winston--it's like travelin' with a ROCK STAR or somethin'... It's really nice that someone remembered me! (and Lucy, of course)

Rocky and Sarge, this woooooo woooooooo's for you!"

"I am very sorry to have to tell you all this. Our sweet Arthur has crossed over to Rainbow Bridge tonight. I just got off the phone with his mommy. This was so unexpected and needless to say his mommy is heartbroken and devastated. He seemed to be a little off yesterday but okay. He even was a happy boy when his mommy came home from work. He did however start taking deep long breaths and went over to his bed to lay down. When his mommy called his daddy to come home to take him to the ER he closed his eyes and he was gone. We are very heartbroken here and can't stop the tears. GOD SPEED my dear Arthur. I'll always love you."

Lucy's test results (updated 12/15):

Both fine needle aspirations of the lymph node in the neck area found only fatty tissue (blush)... no lymph cells... Based on developing symptoms, Dr is leaning more toward an inner ear or middle ear infection of that ear possibly causing that node to flare up. She wants to recheck and augment the antibiotics. Dr told Mum not to start celebrating until we get the results back. Not celebrate? Dr doesn't know Dogsters!!! We party at the drop of a paw!

Radiologist said there is definitely "something there" on the chest xray... what the vet thought she saw plus possibly a secondary nodule, right below the heart. Portable ultrasound technicians spoke to dr and also concur that, based on description of what's on the xray, there is cause for concern. I will have an ultrasound Wednesday a.m., 12/19, and if possible, a biopsy of the suspected mass.

So...... again, maybe not bad stuff in the neck, but still possibly bad stuff in the chest... cautiously optimistic, and PAWS STILL CROSSED!!!!!

OK, so I went to Winston's vet today for an all-day comprehensive exam. It's part of the Wellness Plan that Mum pays for monthly. I actually lost 10 pounds, so my Vet was happy about that, but...

Mum told Dad not to borrow trouble before it's here, whatever that means. All I know is that the Vet shaved my neck and took a needle biopsy of one of my glands to send to an outside lab. And the Vet thought she saw something below my heart on one of my chest xrays, but because she didn't see it on the other views she's sending the xray out to a radiologist for a second opinion.

So, there you go. Mum is SO certain that the gland will be a simple infection caused by my chronic ear problems and the darkness below my heart will be NOTHING to worry about that she brought the Vet and the Vet Techs their thank-you presents when she came to pick me up because we will so NOT see them again before Christmas!!!

Saying our prayers with head bowed and paws crossed.
Power of the Paw, baby, Power of the Paw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Dogster HQ is really, really something! I posted the diary entry shown above very, very early this morning (Mum couldn't sleep... wonder why...) about how we are NOT going to borrow trouble before it's here, and waaaaalaaaaa! Dogster named me Dogster of the Week! Power of the Paw, baby, Power of the Paw!!!! Dogster HQ did the same wonderful thing for WINston back in March--naming him DOTW while he was in hospital under IV fluids because of the bad dog food. I tell ya, isn't HQ just really something!

Thank you all so very much for my sleds, flowers, snowmen, candles, snowflakes, hearts, jingle bells, mistletoe (MUAH!) , and of course, the gingerbread men! (but shouldn't it be a Gingerbread cat? hee hee... guess that wouldn't be PC... and my cat, OzzyCat, would probably have a "hissy" fit... tee hee...) I had some Gingerbread Loaf from Starbucks yesterday on the way home from the vet. Yummm!

And thank you, thank you, thank you all for the kind thoughts and prayers. We absolutely need all of the prayers and support we can muster! The Dogster community is such a loving, supportive group. We wouldn't have gotten through losing our sweet HoneyBunny last year and going through everything with Winston and Remo this year without Dogster's help. We believe in the Power of the Paw!!!!!!!

So many of you have asked about Remo and Winston in your messages to me today. Big WIN is now "stable", which is so very good. Sure, he still is in CRF, but he's coming up on his 11th birthday Feb 21st, which is really something for a Bulldog, let alone one who's in Chronic Renal Failure courtesy of Menu Foods!

And Remo is doing well, too--the big C not withstanding. He is definitely slowing down more, which was expected, but is in really good spirits and is eating well, which is key. He just celebrated his 1/2 year birthday on Dec. 2nd--he is now 13 and 1/2 years young! Yesterday when he hop-hop-hopped down the back steps and went outside he took his brown woobie-stuffie-dog with him. When Mum said "did you bring your baby outside" Remo started to prance (stiff-legged, sure, but it was a prance!) around on the patio, lifting his head and shaking the toy... it was so good to see! He is having more accidents in the house, but what's a little peep between friends, huh?

We will hear back from the Vet probably by Wednesday/ Thursday of next week, 12/12 or 12/13, and will let everyone know as soon as we know about what's up with the xray and biopsy. So many have written that the gland is probably an infection from the ear problems, so that what we're going with!

We so Love all of you guys! Remember, Power of the PAW!
Love and licks,

We got our first SNOW here on December 1st! It started in the afternoon, and by late evening everything was covered in WHITE! Then it got REAL cold!!!!

The next morning, Mum let me and Remo out to PLAY (Winston just laid on the couch, the spud...) But you know, something was wrong here. I was an outdoor gal for the first 7 years of my life. I lived outside in a dog kennel run 24/7/365. And each winter I grew the most fabulously THICK fur coat!

I've been in my Forever Home now a little over a year, and this winter NO FUR COAT!!! What the?????? I put on a "winter coat", but nothing like last year and the years before. Mum says that it's a GOOD thing, because last winter, my first winter as an Inside dog, she picked up enough stray fur each day to make a Pomeranian!

Mum said my coat is finally changing to more of an Indoor dog's coat! Well, how do you like THEM apples? Now, after only being out to play for only a couple of minutes I wimp out and sit by the back door, out of the wind and snow! What's this world coming to when a girl can't play in the snow without getting COLD?

Mum said we'd look at something called a "dog sweater" the next time we're at Petco. Hurry Mum.... I'm C-C-C-C-C-COLD!

So Mum and Dad got me up REAL EARLY... actually woke me up, and put my HARNESS on. YIPPEEEE! That means I'm goin' OUT! Winston got his harness on too 'cuz he was going, but poor ol' Remo had to stay home...

We drove a long time on the highway and parked by LAKE MICHIGAN! But Mum wouldn't let me go play in the surf... she said LATER. We walked up this pedestrian bridge over a very busy Lake Shore Drive. It was weird lookin' down and seein' CARS go by so fast under me. Dad had quite a struggle pullin' 60 lbs of Bully and 40 lbs of wagon over the bridge!!

We came off the bridge into a BIG field with tents and lots and lots of DOGS!!! At almost every tent they gave away "doggie" bags (hee hee) with treats, frisbees and BALLS!!!!!!!! This is FUN!!

This thing we were here to do today was PAWS Chicago's 2007 8k Run and 4k Walk for Their Lives. It's a fundraiser for the largest no-kill animal shelter in Chicago. They just opened up their new expanded facility this month! You can check it out at
http://www.pawschicago.org

We met up with Nancy-lady, who used to own Daisy-a-Go-Go (Winston's pup pal from Bark In the Park and my walk-buddy from last year's PAWS Walk). Nancy-lady was so sad because Daisy went to the Rainbow Bridge quite suddenly just 10 days ago. Daisy was a REAL nice pup, and everyone who knew her misses her lots and lots! We put a picture of Daisy on the back of Winston's wagon, so Angel-Daisy walked with us in Spirit! Nancy-lady got to hold my leash--hope I helped her feel better...

We walked up hills and down hills. It was a nice, SUNNY day and we took some great pictures. Dad had to hold my leash while we walked by the Goose Lagoon... I soooooo wanted to jump in the slimey water! All 3,000+ pups walked around the outside of Lincoln Park Zoo (they wouldn't let us inside the zoo... bummer) and we could SMELL all sorts of neat animal smells in the wind. And when we passed the big fountain outside of the Lincoln Park Conservatory, some pups actually jumped in it!!!

After the PAWS walk, Mum took me back to the BEACH and I got to chase the WAVES!!! Mum was a pretty good sport about it... I didn't have my long leash and Mum let me drag her INTO the lake, gym shoes, blue jeans and all! Winston had to wait in his wagon. He doesn't do too well in the water... like most Bullies, he sinks!!

All in all, it was a really nice day, for a really nice cause. We miss you, Daisy. I LOVE my life!!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you all for the rosettes and pawmail! Just got back from a car ride with my Mum and Dad! We went to PetsMart, and then over to Petco. I got a stuffed soccer ball that squeaks (not for long) and a big knuckle bone to eat downstairs in the den, away from Remo and Winston. It's been a long, happy year here at my forever home, and now I'm 8! I love my Life!

I've been tagged by Khloie #463105 and by Kiss #414350!

Each play ...

I've been tagged by Khloie #463105 and by Kiss #414350!

So, how to play this game...

Each player starts with seven random facts about themselves. Dogs who are tagged, need to post in their Diary the rules & their 7 pawsome facts. Then choose 7 dogs to tag THAT HAVEN"T BEEN TAGGED YET and list their names. There are over 288,000 dogs on Dogster so you should be able to find at least 7 that weren't tagged yet! Don’t forget to pmail them and tell them that they have been tagged and to read your Diary, or you could send them a rosette announcing they've been tagged!

So here are 7 fun facts about me...

1. I snore louder than my two-legged Daddy, but not as loud as Winston!
2. I love all things BALL... and I love to pretend to dig up the ball from the grass... I make BIG divots with my paws!
3. I love to eat and eat and eat. I'm still pretty protective when there's food around and if Winston gets in my way.
4. I love to lay under things... the swing, the daybed, the patio furniture, I feel more comfortable underneath something.
5. I love surprising my new Mommy and Daddy with things they didn't know I culd do... like flush birds!
6. I still can't lick anyone's faces, except Mommy's boy Larry and Auntie Katie's Jim. For some reason, I lick them and noone else! Maybe my old owner had whiskers?
7. We are going to celebrate my birthday on the day I came to live at my forever home, July 31st. So, I'll be celebrating 8 candles!

I've tried to find new pups to invite to play. I tag:

1. Lucky in England #365567
2. Hollie #415961
3. Amor #371170
4. Caramel #394543
5. Sir Augustus Tatortot #409906
6. Lucky in Oregon #302392
and last, but not least, one of our HoneyBunny's dear friends,
7. Jake Ortolano #156155

Now these pups have to write 7 fun facts in their diary, and then tag 7 more Dogsters who haven't been tagged yet! (Cut and Paste works well) Have fun!!

Mum and Dad have been really wrapped up in taking care of Remo, and now Winston. I understand that it's hard to take care of two ill Senior dogs, and it's not anything that they planned.

But tonight, Mum took me out for a walk!!! We haven't gone in months 'cuz it's been so cold in Chicago and Mum is been getting over this thing called anemia and she was always tired. For some reason her thyroid gland wasn't working right so she couldn't store red blood cells, but she's on the mend.

Tonight she let Winston out in front, and then Remo. They're both two ol' codgers who can't move fast or go far, so she can watch them both off leash. After she got them both back up the steps (she has to lift them both up by their back legs) and into the house, she clipped a leash on me and took me out.

I thought we were gonna hang out in front for a while, but she followed me as I walked down the block. And we kept walking!!!! Just like we did last year when I first came to live with her. Down the blocks, past the school, around the corner, up the blocks... how fun! I got to stop and sniff as many times as I wanted to, and in the city there are a lot of smells to smell!!

It was really nice to have some special time with Mum, some special time just for me... I LOVE my life!

3-legged Maddie was at Petco Sunday, pullin' her Mom all around the store!! Boy, is THAT fun to watch!

Maddie, Duke and I were trying to raise money for As Good as Gold, the rescue organization that rescued us!!! And Miz Maddie was pressin' paw (Golden's version of a handshake) and RUNNING up to everyone who stopped by our table.

Seems a couple of months ago Maddie had soft tissue cancer in one of her back legs. The vet said it was "agressive", whatever that means. So, Maddie had to give the vet her leg up past her knee. But she's recovered really fast.

Her mom, Sue, was afraid to bring Maddie 'cuz of Petco's slippery, tiled floors. Boy, no worries there! Maddie is REALLY strong, and she just yanks her mom ALL over the store! Maddie moves lickedy-split!! Hee hee...good goin', Maddie!

And I did some draggin', too! My Dad had my leash cuz' Mum was takin' pictures of everyone. I dragged him up the aisle, down the aisle, around the corner...grab some tennis balls...back up the aisle...what FUN! I LOVE my life!!

A fun thing about being a rescued pup is new Mum & Dad know NOTHING about me ... hee hee! Like the time Dad took me on a bridge and I tried to squeeze through the rail to JUMP into the river!! Didn't know I liked the water ... hee hee! Surprise!

And today they found out I hunt DUCKS! Or should say hunted, 'cuz new Dad's not into that kind of thing, being an artist and all... We went to a Nature Preserve and there was a pond and there were DUCKS!!!

Kind of funny, this Oak Lawn place ... they won't let dogs in ANY of their public parks. The ONLY place they allow dogs is a Nature Preserve ... can you say DUH?

Anyway, Mum was watching Remo who was having a hard time walking around the pond, and while her head was turned I went all the way to the edge of the pond and there were DUCKS!!!! But I wasn't allowed to go any farther... bummer.

I kept on smelling them and doing my best "point" (bet you didn't know Goldens could do that, huh?). Mum and Dad didn't either... hee hee. Mum put some pictures on my page of me "pointing", but I can't seem to straighten out my curly pom-pom Golden tail... but heh, it was so much fun! I LOVE my life!

So Mum got me up REAL EARLY... actually woke me up, and put my HARNESS on. YIPPEEEE! That means I'm goin' OUT!

We drove a long time on the highway and parked by the LAKE! But Mum wouldn't let me go play in the surf... she said LATER. We walked up this bridge over a very busy Lake Shore Drive. It was weird lookin' down and seein' CARS go by so fast under me.

We came off the bridge into a BIG field with tents and lots and lots of DOGS!!! At almost every tent they gave away "doggie" bags (hee hee) with treats, frisbees and BALLS!!!!!!!! This is FUN!!

This thing we were here to do was PAWS Chicago's Run for Their Lives 8K Run and 4K Walk. Mum and I met up with Nancy-lady and Daisy (Winston's girlfriend from Bark In the Park). She was a REAL nice pup, and we got along fine.

We walked up hills and down hills, and through a lot of MUD from last night's rain. It was a nice, SUNNY day and we took some great pictures. All 2,500 pups walked around the outside of Lincoln Park Zoo (they wouldn't let us inside the zoo... bummer) and we could SMELL all sorts of neat animal smells in the wind.

After the PAWS walk, Daisy and I walked over to The Furry Bistro. I got some great dog bakery goods and Daisy got a pretty new red Puppia harness... VERY nice! Daisy got to chase some WHIRLYS (squirrels) up into the trees on the way through the park... BONUS!

Then, Mum took me back to the BEACH and I got to chase the WAVES!!! Mum said if it doesn't rain tomorrow we'll come back with Dad and the LONGER leash! Can't wait! I LOVE my life!!!!!

p.s. Mum and Dad took me BACK to the BEACH on Monday. We didn't stay too long because it started to THUNDERSTORM, but I got to eat the breakers enough that I BARFED my breakfast up all over the beach. (Those goofy seagulls LOVED it). Mum had to keep me on a lead 'cuz I still don't come TOO well... hee hee

What a busy, busy, BUSY day I had on Saturday. Well, the excitement started on Friday when Mum took me back to the GROOMERS! I got a BATH (eewww) and my nails and coat trimmed. I looked GORGEOUS!

The next day Mum and Dad loaded us ALL into the pup-mobile (yea, even my SNOTTY-NOSED bulldog brother and old Golden brother got to come). We drove to a place called Madison Meadow for the 3rd Annual AGaG Golden Retriever Rescue Reunion PICNIC.

It RAINED, but that didn't stop 177 CRAZY Golden Moms and Dads from bringing 118 of their adopted and foster pups out to PLAY! The lady who did my assessment visit stopped by to see ME. She was so HAPPY I had found a forever home with my foster parents. Her husband did my initial intake transport from my old home to AGaG's vet. They kept saying said how well my ears had healed up (THANKS new Mum and Dad).

Dad took me for a walk down by this neat LAKE... but this place called Lombard, IL wouldn't let us water dogs SWIM... bummer! I soooooooo wanted to take a SWIM. We had games and frozen watermelon dog treats, too! And fried chicken (Dad snuck me a bit when Mum wasn't lookin'... hee hee ;)

After a NAP in the back seat on the way home and another nap in the house, I woke up to a FIESTA happening right on MY STREET!!! We have alot of new neighbors who speak a different language than Mum and Dad. I sometimes think I understand this language they use...it makes me perk up my ears...

The neighbor kids like me ALOT, and boy do these neighbors know how to PARTY!!!! They had the entire STREET blocked off. Kids were riding around on their bikes, playing soccer, and dancing to this really, really, really LOUD music. OOOOM-PAAAA! People were grillin' but I'm allergic so no handouts for me... bummer.... but Snot-Nosed scored some CHICKEN :p

I got LOTS of hugs and pets, then Dad let me play LEASH-TUG-O-War with some of the bigger girls. We ran down the block and had SO MUCH FUN! Mum took lots of pictures! I LOVE my new life!

Well, I'm happy to to say that Winston and I are doin' OK, really doin' alot better. Mum took a picture yesterday of Winston and me sleeping on the daybed... BUTT to BUTT!

Yesterday Mum and Dad took me to a festival to meet PEOPLE for the Golden Retriever rescue. I was REALLY good, and they were really happy.

But Dad didn't like people calling me a "FOSTER" dog all afternoon. He told Mum when we got back in the car to fill out whatever paperwork we needed and send the check in to ADOPT me--he said "Lucy's not goin' ANYWHERE!" Cool, huh?

Then when we got home and went online we had an e-mail from Dogster that my DIARY was one of five chosen each day to be Featured! Cool, huh? If you went to the Home page, and click on "see more diaries" next to the Diary of the Day, it brought up lists and I was the fifth one on yesterday's list of FEATURED diaries!!! Mum was so excited she forwarded the Dogster e-mail to a bunch of people. :)

So, I saw a RIVER when we were at the festival. The booth for AGaG was on a bridge over a River Walk! I REALLY like RIVERS!!!! But I didn't know how to tell Mum and Dad, so I tried to squish my body through the railing, but only my HEAD fit! So Mum and Dad said they'd take me to the dog beach that Winston went to next Saturday so I could play in the WATER!!! That's gonna be FUN!

It's so GREAT being me!!! I LOVE my life!!!!!!

Sunday, August 27, 2006

So, today I went for a CAR RIDE...weeeee... It was just ME...NO old Golden brother, and NO little snocky-nosed, snorty, burping, droolin', fartin', eye-boogy Bulldog...just ME (and Mum)!! We drove pretty far away, and we passed FORESTS... Boy, lot's of neat SMELLS!

We got to a PETCO. I know Petco is where I get a new BALL!!! So, I went in all HAPPY!! But we didn't go find a new BALL (even though eventually I got a NEW blue and red one--SUPER SIZED, too). We went over to this table and there were a LOT of people and GOLDENS.

Turns out THIS is something called a Meet 'n Greet (HoneyBunny whispered in my ear for me to be a GOOD girl). LOTS of people wanted to meet ME, and their Goldens wanted to SNIFF me (didn't know I was SO popular!!).

I met this lady JoAnne with her old Gold Duke; I met Sandy with her adopted Golden Jordan and her foster pup Romeo (he was suppose to be ME...Sandy is the lady I was headed to on that FIRST DAY when my foster Mum found my bad ear) along with two lovely young ladies as helpers Lindsey and Megan; I met this really nice man Ray with HIS Goldens Rocky and Dillon (they BOTH used to be foster dogs like ME); this nice lady Beverly and her adopted Golden Ellie (who's really, really SHY but let a little girl PET her today....YEA ELLIE!!!) and Mum's friend Sue and her adopted, curly-haired Red Golden Rex (who they call Lap-a-Saurus 'cuz he's BIG as a dinosaur and likes to SIT on people...hee...hee).

Dillon TRIED to take my pink tennis ball, so I GRRRRRRR'd him and the nice man Ray made him give it BACK to me...hee hee.... But, Mum let me get a NEW, bigger red and blue BALL so I let old Duke keep the pink one...I know, I know, why didn't I GRRRR at Duke too? Well, I think a GIRL should be able to CHOOSE who to give her BALL to...don't cha think?

These people and dogs are ALL here at Petco today to raise money for Foster Dog VET bills (I know something about that...CONE HEAD)!!! This As Good As Gold organization is ok...they have helped over FIVE HUNDRED Goldens in a little over THREE years. They helped ME, right?

I met other people and LOTS of little kids, but foster Mum WOULDN't let me JUMP on them...bummer... She said since I was being so GOOD she's gonna take me to something called Naperville's Last Fling to meet MORE people and kids... Maybe that will be OK (HoneyBunny, you better help me...whisper in my ear and tell me WHAT to DO)! It will be OK with me as long as I get a BALL!!!!!!!!!!

My new yard has a BIG patch of grass in the center, with cement on all four sides. My favorite game right now is POP the ball UP from the grass.

You see, with this CONE on my head, I can't just pick up my BALL. So, I came up with this FUN game... I smash the BALL down with my big paws, it POPS UP and I LUNGE at it and GRAB it!!!!

But, when I do the SMASHING, I kind of make divots of grass with my big PAWS... I really get EXCITED and I guess it's maybe like DIGGING.... but not REALLY... and the ball gets all muddy and slippy...

I started the game at one end of the grass and got ALL the way to the other end. Mommy said it looks like a "Roto-tiller" went down the WHOLE side of the lawn... She laughed and said I made a GOOD Roto-tiller... what's a Roto-tiller?

I guess it must be an OK thing, 'cuz Mommy laughed (but she DIDN'T laugh when I tried to JUMP UP on the daybed with the muddy ball I SNEAKED inside...wonder why?).

Went for a car ride.... wheeeeee... to the nice lady vet. Thought I'd get rid of this Cone on my head today. It's cracked from me slamming it into things as I try to get my BALL... and it's got grass stains on it...and I'm TIRED of it!

OH NO..... lady vet gave me a NEW Cone... not good... but she DID take out the drain tube from my earflap... but my ear's STILL flipped inside out and attached to the top of my head... what's up with THAT????

Lady vet said one more week, if things go good she'll take down my ear... THANKS, but geeeeeeesh... what a disappointment...

Tuesday August 1, 2006

Once upon a time I lived in a cage OUTSIDE in a yard with my dog-mom Sheba. We lived there for the first 7 years of my life. It WASN'T too much fun, if you ask me.

One day a nice lady from something called a "rescue" came to visit. She took me and Sheba for a car ride! WHEEEEEE... Boy, was that ever neat--first time ever in a CAR!

Oh my...from a cage in a yard to a little-itty-bitty cage in this vet's office...I did HARD TIME there!!! Then, after 11 days, another nice lady came and sprang me! We went for another car ride---wheeeee--and stopped at someplace called "THE GROOMER'S".

Oh no...water, shampoo, water, conditioner, water, detangler, and MORE water... what's up with that??? And now new nice lady is pouring junk down my sore ears... and now we're in the car again....wheeeee....

Not again...we're at another one of those "VET" places, and they're pouring more junk down my ears...ooooooooh, but those pain pills are GOOOOOOOD....

Another car ride...wheeeeeeee.....hey, who are you? You're a red dog like me....your name's Remo? .....hey, keep your NOSE to yourself, buddy... and what's that thing? Snorting and drooling, what a MESS...you're tellin' me that's a "bulldog"? Named Winston? Sounds like a lil' piggy to me...

Hey, this place called a "forever home" ain't too bad...a nice daybed to climb on INSIDE out of the hot sun... the nice lady and nice man scratch my ears, feed me these "treat" things, and, what's this? A ball...A Ball....oooooo....A BALL!!!!!

OK, now this is getting to be a PAIN in the EAR (sic)... after another car ride.....wheeeeee.... another Vet office... ouch...a shot....ooooooooooo, that feels gooooodddddd.....zzzzzz...zzzzz...zzzzzz... HEY, they've stitched my ear to the top of my head.... if I wanted prick-ears I'd have been born a TERRIER....

What is this giant plastic lampshade thing on my head? I can't itch my ears.... man, this STINKS....... but you know, this thing called an E-collar makes a really good, A #1 Ball Scooper-Upper!!!!!

So, we're going to take another car ride.....wheeeeee....back to the nice lady vet on Monday, and I hope, I hope, I hope this E-Collar thing will go away. I want to have fun in my new yard and roll around in the grass and dig more holes...can't wait!!!

New Mommy and new Daddy are pretty nice. And that cat-thing is fun to bark at. But, I tell 'ya, the jury is still out on those two dogs... "boy" dogs.....boy do they smell...like boy dogs...heee...heee...

It's been a heck of a two weeks if you ask me...
sort of like that Dorothy-girl from the Wizard of Oz...
