Our sweet boy went to his rest on July 7, 2012. After his cancer diagnosis in February, he remained symptom free for several months. We had lots of walks, games of fetch, buddy burgers and treats. He got to go to the cabin one last time for his Gotcha Day and went with us on a trip to Manitou Springs. In June his symptoms became severe and it was time to let him go. We trust that many Dogster pals are keeping him company at the Bridge.

I had the best time in Salida! I didn't get to meet up with my pal Jesse because his Mom and Dad had to be out of town, but I got to go everywhere with my peeps! Our motel is real dog friendly and we could walk into town from the motel. On our first night, I walked to a restaurant with the folks and we three sat on the patio and had dinner together. Well, they had dinner and I watched and had my dinner back at the motel. Most of the stores in Salida let dogs in, so I went book shopping at Book Haven and I shopped for shoes for Dad and went into a gift shop. I think I could get into this shopping thing, so the peeps better watch their credit cards!! BOL!

We went to see the new dog park that Jesse's Mom worked to get established. I had a great time because they had agility tunnels and I ran through one of them to the pawrents delight! We walked by the river, but I didn't go in, because that would mean getting my paws wet and I hate that!

Mom put a video of me protecting her in the hotel on my main Dogster page. It's kinda slow going, but you can see how very alert I am! I take my guarding job very seriously!

We walked and walked and I just loved that! Mom and Dad are talking about a trip to Breckenridge that doesn't include me, but I am going back to my old B and B for a few days. So, I should have fun anyway.

I am one happy boy! Today I have a play date with Mocha, a chocolate lab. (I am disappointed that Mom says that chocolate is her color and that she is not edible). Then on Sunday we leave for my favorite doggy-friendly motel in Salida. We will park the car there and walk everywhere in town! When we get back, I have doggy daycare on Thursday with all my pals and ANOTHER play date next Friday with my other grrrlfriend, Nuna. Mom says she is going to have to get me my own Daytimer or iPod touch to keep up with all my appointments and dates!!

I am so excited! Mom was perusing the dogs up for adoption at our shelter and her heart went out to a 7 year old Border Collie/Lab whose family had moved and said they couldn't take her. She called our friend Edna, who is looking for an older dog. Edna went to see the dog, Nuna, today and put a hold on her!! Hooray!

She said Nona was very calm and sweet. She couldn't take her home today, because she will be out from morning to late evening tomorrow, so she put a hold on her and is going to pick her up on Friday. Mom is going to their house to meet Nuna. She says that after Nuna is settle into her house we can have a play date!! And assuming that we get along (and I KNOW we will), Nuna is invited to our house for Easter dinner with her Mom!!

Oh boy, oh boy! I do love those grrrls!!! I will have Mom post photos of our date!

Now that I am 8 years old, I go to see Dr. Batch twice a year for a Senior Check-up. Mom took me in yesterday and I just loved it. All the techs know me and come to greeet me and give me rubs and scratches. Then Dr. Batch examined me. He gets down on the floor with me and kisses me while we're doing it! He also gives me WONDERFUL little chicken treats!

He looked in my eyes and ears and mouth and felt me all over. He put a thingy next to my heart and said I have the slow heartbeat of an athelete! He bent my legs and pulled on them and said my joints are just fine. When he was all done, he said, "Cosmo is perfect." I loved that!

He did find one little lump the size of a marble near my rib. He put a needle in it and put stuff on a slide. Then he said, "I don't even have to put this under the microscope. It's clearly all fat." So that was nothing.

More treats, more kisses....I love my vet.

Mom and Dad took me to a neat hotel on the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs. The pet-friendly rooms were on the third floor, which was new to us. Usually they are on the first floor near the doors so we dogs can get outside when needed.

So Mom took me into this little room and the door closed behind us. Then I felt a big vibration in the floor and IT FELT LIKE THE ROOM WAS MOVING!!! When the door opened, we were in a different place! Mom said that the room is called an elevator and that I shouldn't be afraid. But it spooked me every time. And we had to use it alot! I don't like the elevator thing, although I do like the Colorado River........

I got to meet a mom and then all the kids petted me!! They loved the way my tail wags and wags real fast!!! Then when the bus came, Dad took me on it to meet Mr. School Bus Driver!! It was great fun!!

Then after the bus left, Mom and Dad put me in the car and we went off to MY school....doggy daycare where I played with the other dogs all day!!

Will someone please call the Humane Society and have them come and just take me away? Two weeks ago, Mom took me to the doggy emergency room and they gave me a shot to make me puke just because I ate an empty doggy toothpaste tube. Mom says she was afraid the metal shards would hurt my insides. But I think she just wanted to torture me.

Then at the cabin on Monday she was cleaning out a shed and found an old chipmunk carcass. She took it out back and buried it under some sticks. Yesterday morning she saw me playing back there and then she noticed that the carcass was gone. So she ASSUMED that I had eaten it! Out came the peroxide bottle. She put that awful stuff down my throat and made me puke AGAIN!!! Only my kibble and some green beans came up because I was innocent of eating it. This time she was afraid the old thing would get stuck inside me or that the chipmunk might have eaten some Decon.

All I know is that I am sick and tired of being sick and pukey. Mom is making me miserable....somebody get me some hellp.

Life sure has been busy for me. FIn my last entry, I had to put on my bow tie to meet and greet the dog rescue ladies from the All Breed Rescue Network of Colorado. Then last week Mom and Dad took me to a 4th of July party in the mountains at the cabin of our neighbors whose name is Neighbors! It's pretty confusing. But joy of joys, my Ellie was at the pawty! She lives in Austin, Texas and her peeps have a ranch near our cabin. I only get to see her once a year. But it sure was nice......sigh.

Ellie has a new brother named Shorty (shouldn't ALL doxies be named Shorty?). He's a great guy, but he had a bad start in life and he shakes and cries anytime his mom leaves the room. But other than that, he seems happy and healthy. Ellie has no such issues. When her mom leaves the room, she just kisses whomever is left in the room. (Sometimes, thats me!)

After the picnic Mom and Dad took me for a short, but steep walk on the Continental Divide Trail, which is just 8 miles from our cabin. It starts at 9,600 feet and goes up from there, so we were all panting like dogs.

In keeping with my busy social schedule, today Dad had a bunch of former work friends over for lunch. So I put on my red bow tie (with Mom's help) and I did the meet and greet thing. Needless to say, I was again the life of the pawty!

What a day! Mom had eight dog rescue ladies over for lunch today! I got to wear my red bow tie and be the center of attention. I was kissed and petted and told how handsome I am. People sneaked me food and wouldn't let Mom keep me away from the table. I feel like a rock star!!

The whole group was photographed for the All Breed Rescue Network Newsletter and I am front and center in the photo!

The only bad moment was when they told Mom she should have more dogs!! But she is a one dog human, so I think I'm safe!

On Saturday I helped Mom and Dad do a walk for NAMI, the National Association for Mental Illness. We did a 3.2 mile walk around Sloan's Lake in Denver. Everyone commented on how nicely I walked, greeted other dogs and greeted peeps. Several peeps said they couldn't bring their dogs on a walk like that, because it would freak them out.

Well, I LOVED it, the walk, the peeps, the dogs. And we raised money for a good cause. Mom's church group walked with their tee shirts that say, "Walking my Talk." If Mom could sew, she'd make me a tee that says, "Walking my Bark." BOL!

I've had quite a day today. First I had to help Mom with the garden up on the hill. I patrolled the agricultural ditch and kept any marauding ducks away. Then I had to accompany Mom on her walk to Denver West to mail some stuff. We came back along another ditch path and we passed six houses with dogs running to the fences to bark at me. Mom says I was very mature to ignore them.

Then my uncle Andy came to have lunch with Dad while Mom was out somewhere. They took me for another long walk. Again, I was praised for my "walkie" skills. But I have learned that walking nicely means you get to go on lots of walks.

I have walked and run for miles today, and I am pooped.......but happy!

That's the word Dr. Batch used on my physical!! It says GERIATRIC EXAM! Does he think I am old or something? I am almost eight, but I'd say a very young eight! My eyes are perfect, my ears are perfect, my teeth are good (except for the one I broke that has to come out). My heart and lungs are great and my knees and elbows and hips look super fine. Oh I gained a lot of weight since my last exam, so I am now on a diet. Mom thinks it's because of the long winter and all the days we couldn't walk or play on the icey snow. I hope this doesn't mean no more BUDDY BURGERS for me!!!

Why can't the doctor call this a "mature adult" exam?? Mom got me Senior dog food, but I thought that meant that I had advanced to the Senior class in doggie school. Harumph,

Here in Colorado, the legislature has passed laws stating that animal abuse that involves torture, mutilation or death of an animal can be punishable as a felony. We just had a case nearby where a young woman was charged with taping a Shiba Inu to a refrigerator door with packing tape!! When arrested she said it was because her boyfriend was paying more attention to the dog than to her. Her trial ended yesterday and the jury found her guilty of a felony charge. We are waiting to hear what her sentence will be! But I am glad that my state finds animal abuse to be a serious thing.

There will be an appeal, but the jury was clear that this case involved torture. Oh, and the dog is doing fine now. He has been in foster care and now I understand he's been adopted to a loving home.

It was quite a sight this morning. Mom in her nightgown with a trench coat and garden clogs, trying to pick up some of my poo now that the snow's melting. She was sliding backward down the hill with baggies in hand! BOL! I was sliding too! The snow that remains is pure ice and the grass was covered with little ice crystals. So Mom and I gave up and went back inside.

I did get a nice walk to Applewood Park later and a nice off-leash run there. The streets and the park are totally dry. We just have the ice obstacles in our yard! BOL!

Sometimes peeps just don't understand. Since the streets are still wet and slick in places, Mom decided that I should have a nice long game of fetch in the snow to get my exercise. I really tried to stay in the groove and catch and fetch, but suddenly it occurred to me that snow is delicious. So I stopped playing to eat it. One should live in the moment and follow one's bliss! And that snow was blissful!

Mom just got disgusted and left me and the ball and the snow and went inside. What a grouch!

I am happy to report that I have the pawrents totally under my spell! The other night they went out for dinner. Sandy Paws had left a nice pressed pork chew bone in my stocking and while they were out, I became very hungry for a snack. So I pulled the stocking down off the fireplace and chewed the foot off to remove the chew bone. It was encased in plastic, but I must say I did a fine job of chewing the plastic off and spitting it out. I knocked a few things off the fireplace hearth in the process too. All of this activity made me so hungry that I ate the entire chew bone in one sitting.

When Mom and Dad got home, it took them awhile to figure out what had happened. Since the fireplace door was open, they were afraid for a minute that an animal had come down the chimney. Then they examined the wrappers, chewed up Christmas stocking and realized what I had done. And then:

THEY LAUGHED and said I was ever so cute!! Dad reminded Mom that I have another stocking for next year, so they are not even going to report me to Sandy Paws.

We started Christmas Eve day with a rousing game of snow ball in the back yard! My pal Spike sent me a really cool ball that stays on top of the snow. Mom did a video of me playing with it and posted it today. Then after the peeps shoveled the snow from last night's storm, we went inside and Mom started cooking meatballs and baked ravioli. But before she made the meatballs, she pulled off a nice piece and made a burger for me!! I can hardly wait!! Then we are having company for dinner and I will let them all admire me and tell me how great I look in my holiday collar with bells (Just like Bo Obama has!)

I love the holidays! Good food, great fun and visits from my favorite peeps! Life is good in Cosmorado!

That sub-zero weather has blown past and now it's more seasonable. Yesterday we went to the park and it was sunny and in the 50's. We walked around the lake and then Mom and I walked in the back part of the park, but it was pretty snow packed. Mom said she didn't have the right shoes. I told her that if she'd get rid of those shoes and toughen up her paw pads, she could walk anywhere, anytime! BOL!

We saw a big bird hovering like a hummingbird! It would hang there and then move on then hover some more and move on. At first Mom thought it was having problems, but then it was clear that it was doing this on purpose. Mom talked to a birder friend today and told me it was probably a kestrel. It's a little hawk. Mom says the birder lady told her the only birds that hover are hummingbirds and hawks, when they are hunting.

We took a little walk today. It was uneventful, but that's ok. Life is still good in Cosmorado!

Mom told me that, after 15 agility classes, we are at the point of committing to a whole lot of work and practice or going on to something else. We are not serious about competing, so I told mom to see what was out there. She does have my flyball hurdles and an agility hurdle to set up in the yard for me to play on once the snow goes away.

So, Mom says she is going to sign us up for a class called Games and Tricks in January! I can hardly wait, since they main thing is to get mom to take me to the fairgrounds arena where the classes are held so I can sniff the wonderful floor there. It's the livestock arena, so the place is nice and fragrant. (although the peeps can't seem to smell anything).

I am going to email my teacher to let her know my game and trick preferences. I want to learn to play Scrabble in the games section and I want to learn some good magic tricks to show off at doggy day care. I hope they can accommodate me!

In the meantime, it's chasing balls in the snow in the back yard for exercise and fun. Life is good in Cosmorado!!

Mom and I were pretty worried about agility today. We were given a hurdle to work with last time, but the snow hasn't melted in our yard, so Mom couldn't set it up. So today in agility I had to run though a tunnel followed by two hurdles. I hadn't practiced at all!! The hurdles didn't look a bit like my flyball hurdles, but when Mom yelled "JUMP!" I knew what to do. I did several of those runs through the tunnel and over the hurdles and Mom was very proud of me.

My only "fou fou" was the first time she sent me through the tunnel and instead I ran out to the stands to say "hi" to Dad. He was told to ignore me, which is very hard for him! BOL!

But all in all I was a good athlete! Most of the pups in the class are much, much younger than me, so I try to advise them and give them pointers on handling their peeps in between activities!!

I snapped and growled right back and he ran off again.

I just got back from my walk through the 'hood with Mom. It was a nice, enjoyable non-eventful walk up the hill behind us and back. Then it happened! As we passed one house first one, then two and finally five Yorkies came rushing at me barking. They were of varying sizes and very yappy. Mom saw that their side gate was open so she made me go with her to the front door, with Yorkies nipping at my toes. She rang the doorbell and the owner came out and got them all back into the house. She was very glad to have them inside and to get the gate closed.

Then at the next house, I got to meet the big white poodle who I always bark at. He was very friendly and nice. His name is Zak, like my pal from Ahia, so I took a liking to him right away. However, I can't promise that I won't bark at him when he walks past my house. It's what I do.

Hooray...the snow is all melted and so Mom took me for a nice long walk to Applewood Park, around the park and back the long way. I got to run off leash in the park! On our way there, we practiced walking on a regular collar and "loose lead." Mom said I did very well..and gave me quite a few training treats in the process!

On our way home, we noticed that a man was staring at me. He asked Mom if I was an Aussie! As always she said, "He is a shelter dog and we think he's Border Collie and pointer." The man said I had Aussie traits. BOL! One of the vets in our practice thought I was part deerhound! Being such a mutt is great. It keeps the peeps guessing.

I know for a fact that I am a Cosmo dog. Unique and exceptional! BOL!

Last Sunday, Mom and Dad took me to the big Episcopal Cathedral in Denver for the "Blessing of the Animals." I was surprised when they took me up the big marble steps into the beautiful cathedral. We sat in a pew together! There were dogs everywhere and a few cats. Some dogs preferred to stand in the big aisle to sniff each other, but I liked sitting in the pews with the peeps. Then a big organ played music and a procession came down the aisle, led by a Samoyed and a Norwegian Elkhound! Some of the people in the choir had their dogs with them. The people read a prayer giving thanks for all the animals...even squirrels! Mom was glad that there was a thank you for the parakeets, but I don't agree. BOL! The people sang some songs and the "barky" dogs barked along. I am too well-behaved for that. Then the priests came down the aisle with water bowls and evergreen boughs and they sprinkled water on us. Finally, we went outside and got lots of treats!!! And we all sniffed each other. At the blessing service there were no fights and we all remembered not to lift our legs or squat inside the cathedral.

I feel like I am blessed every day. I have my home, my pawrents, my big yard, my agility classes, my trips to the cabin, our walks to the park and even fun at daycare and at Pet Peeves when the pawrents travel.

Mom and Dad went to Chicago for Grandma's 88th birthday over the weekend. I stayed at Pet Peeves and had a discussion with them about confidentiality. After my experience last time when they told Mom all about my grrrrlfriend, I didn't want anymore "leaks." So this morning when Mom asked how I did, they said "Cosmo is a terrific dog, a very good boy. And he had a great stay." No details about my "friendships" with the grrrrls! That's the way I like it.

I wish I could have stayed in Vegas while Mom and Dad were in Oregon. Instead I went to a lovely place called Pet Peeves where I played with other dogs all day and slept in a farm house at night. They say that "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." That is NOT the case with Pet Peeves. In the middle of the week I was there, Mom called to check in on me and right off the bat they told her that I had a special relationship going with a girl dog named Tille. She is a pretty black lab. We had a great time playing together all day and because we liked each other so much, the nice people put our crates next to each other in the same bedroom at bed time. We had such wonderful time. Of course I played with the other dogs too, but Tillie was my favorite!

When Mom came to pick me up this morning, they told her all about Tillie again! A guy has no privacy at all! They told Mom that Tillie and I played together, ate together and slept together!! So Mom is telling everyone about the "Tillie affair." That's when she''s not singing that silly "Cosmo and Tillie sitting in a tree...k-i-s-s-i-n-g......song!!!

I wish that what happened at Pet Peeves STAYED at Pet Peeves! I am going back there for several days next week and I'm sure hoping "you-know-who" is there! BOL!!

Today was our last time. When the peeps get back from Oregon, it'll be the last weekend for Farmer's Market and Mom has a chorale workshop so we will miss it. Mom took me to the dog treat place today to buy a few things. The nice lady said we would get a discount if I would pick a tennis ball out of a big bowl of water. Now, I love the tennis balls, but these were just floating in WATER! I absolutely refused, so no refund for Mom. BOL!

We went to our favorite barbecue place and Dad got a big pile of brisket to share with me. But when we sat down at a picnic table to eat it, it was bad according to the peeps. Mom wanted Dad to return it, but he just threw it away. I would have given it a special test and disposed of it for them, but they wouldn't give it to me. What a waste.

So, Mom and I have to practice our pre-agility lessons tomorrow. On Monday I go to my doggy camp. I can't believe they are going away without me, but I hope to make lots of new friends at camp. A guy has to make the best of things.......I did get a Frosty Paws tonight and I'm having a buddy burger tomorrow. The guilt in humans can be a very good thing! BOL!

Mom took me to my new boarding camp, "Pet Peeves." I will be there next week, when my pawrents head off to the Oregon coast. Mom told Mr. Kris that I am a high energy boy, used to day care and other dogs. So they put me in with a high energy male Malamute. That did not work out at all. He was too rough and I let him know I didn't like it. So, Mr. Kris moved me in with some females and smaller males. Am I brilliant or what? Mr. Kris says that I should always be in play groups with the ladies. I now have a whole new group of grrrrls!! BOL!

Those of us who are boarding sleep in the farmhouse at Pet Peeves with a human caretaker at night. I am not used to crates, but I went right into my crate at nap time and settled in. Then I woke up and decided that nap time was too long, so I started barking. Mom is hoping that I won't be a barking problem and is going to suggest lots of ball games for me to be sure I am tired out at night. There's a nice big running area behind the play areas.

I think I'm going to like it at Pet Peeves, but I would rather be running on the Oregon beach with Sybil Marie and Thalia Rose. If only I could get a seat in the cabin of Mom and Dad's plane........sigh.

So why can't I have a pony? There is a little field across the street from our house that has been for sale for a long time. Last week some peeps started putting fencing up all around it. Then they added a temporary shelter and a BIG drinking bowl. Then they added three beautiful horses. The family is there every day taking care of the horses and there is a young girl who works with them. Dad says she is in the Westernaires, a group of young people that does all kinds of fancy riding and formations on horse back. Dad took me for a walk today and we went by the field. I wanted to play with the horses, but Dad wouldn't let me.

Then Mom took me to the fairgrounds for my pre-agility class. It is in a big arena with a dirt floor where horses have been walking around. It's part of the Westernaires complex at the fairgrounds and it is so horsey smelling, I could hardly concentrate.

Mom was supposed to reward me with treat every time I touched her hand with my nose. This holding out the hand signal is just like the one she uses to get me to shake hands. So she'd hold out her hand and I'd hit it with my paw. She told the instructor, "Cosmo thinks I'm a PEZ dispenser!" BOL!

My teacher showed Mom how to hold her hand differently for the nose touch thing. I can tell I'm going to have to have tons of treats to learn this one!

As if squirrels weren't enough of a pain in the neck, now they are getting ME into trouble..
And not the "I ate the whole squirrel" kind of trouble that I can live with. Those rodents have noticed the cool nights and have started burying the peanuts they get from our neighbors next door in Mom's flower and veggie pots. Mom says that it is my job to keep them off the patio and away from the planters. But I have no intention of even being on the patio if I can be in the house with Mom. And if she puts me out, sit on my bed on the porch and wait for her to let me in...and my eyes get heavy and I doze off.

I love chasing squirrels and chipmunks in the mountains, but when it becomes a job and a responsibility it just ruins the sport of it.

So Mom says I am a failure as a squirrel hunter and Dad says he is sure I have signed a non-aggression pact with the squirrels. I just wish they'd go away and live in somebody else's yard and that they would stop ruining my reputation.

OK, even with the new railing on the porch, I have figured out that by watching carefully, I can use the steps and still get pretty close to those dratted chipmunks and squirrels. And the area under the cabin has been cleared out and is also a great hunting ground!!

We took a good hike on Snyder Creek road in the Arapahoe National Forest, just a few miles from our place. The creek is full of willows, which makes it prime moose habitat. Mom says she's sure we passed some moose who were lying in the willows. But we didn't see a thing. She was glad I didn't try to flush them out because we don't want to be that close to them, especially Mom moosies with their babies!! The only incident we know of someone getting hurt by a moose by us was when a woman was walking her dogs and got between a Mom Moose and her baby. In the confusion and upset, the woman slipped and fell and the moose accidentally stepped on her face!

We stopped at our friend Bonnie's cabin and she was being visited by some folks from Texas who have a ranch near us. They had the beautiful doxie, Ellie, who I befriended last year. She is as pretty as ever and now she has a brother, "Shorty," who looks just like her. He was a rescue, but seems to be happy with his family. I didn't get to play with much. Mom is always afraid I will step on them....as if I weren't a perfect gentleman with the pretty little gal dogs!! So Mom made sure I left them alone.

I got lots of kudos for being a good boy while the pawrents stained the new railing. I ran after lots of chipmunks and I didn't knock over a single paint can! Mom says this is good preparation for agility!

What a day! First the man from the groomers called to see if Mom wanted me to have a bath!!! I really didn't need one, but off we went. Mom says she feels sorry because his business is having a rough time. Ha! She feels sorry, but I have to be the one who gets the bath. (pardon my use of the B word).

Then Mom said she'd take me to doggy day care to play tomorrow. But when she called, she found out that they are on vacation this week.

Fortunately, there's always a silver lining in Cosmorado. This afternoon, I watched Mom check out a web site for agility classes at the Jeffco Fairgrounds nearby. And I saw her sign us up for a class called "Foundations of Agility I." Does this mean I am going to become a professional athlete??? More to the point, is Mom going to be able to keep up with me and give me the right cues????

I can hardly wait until September 9!!!

I am not as perfect as I may seem. I am a bad boy. I cannot keep myself from barking at my own Dad when he enters a room where Mom is in residence. If she is on Dogster or otherwise on the computer, I lie at her feet and if Dad enters the room, I jump up and bark at him. I cannot stop myself from doing this even though neither Mom nor Dad approve. And if Mom goes to bed first, I park myself on the floor next to her side of the bed and when Dad starts up the stairs, I start barking. It's very embarrassing. And when Dad gets near me I wag my tail and smile and invite him to pat me. Dad knows I love him and he makes me my buddy burgers and all....but still, I bark.

But this barking thing is even getting on MY nerves! I think I need a doggy shrink!

Oh how I love Saturday mornings when Mom and Dad and I get into the car and head 15 minutes west to Golden. We park and walk to the Clear Creek walking path and down to the Farmer's Market. The creek was running high today which was good to see and my fellow Canine-Americans were everywhere!! Mom and I went to the coffee booth for an iced coffee while Dad picked out corn and then we watched a little bit of the puppet show, which consisted of dancing dog puppets!! So very cool! I sniffed many doggies as we wended our way through the peeps while Mom and Dad shopped. I think my favorite thing today was meeting "Barbeque Bob." He is ALL ABOUT MEAT!! Dad bought some of his barbeque and even gave me a taste of it. SOOOOO good!

We wandered along the path and looked at the water, but I had no interest in getting wet this week. I just liked walking and sniffing and greeting everyone.

Another happy Saturday morning in Cosmorado! BOL!

I was feeling kind of sick this morning and I threw up my dinner from last night in the living room.
After cleaning up the mess, Mom said I needed a "bland diet" for a couple of days. I didn't like the sound of that "diet" word, but I just watched Mom cook up some ground turkey (low fat) and mix white rice into it. It smells heavenly and it is cooling in the kitchen now.

So, I highly recommend barfing to get lots of sympathy and good eats!!! BOL!!

Today must have been another "Anything Can Happen Day!" Mom said that she and Dad were taking me to the farmer's market in Golden. I love it there. It's on Clear Creek and there are lots of peeps and dogs and there's a nice dog treat booth that I especially like! So we parked at our usual place and Mom and Dad walked by a bunch of signs without reading them. But we noticed that Golden was full of people and the streets were being closed off. At some point, Mom and Dad realized that this weekend is Buffalo Bill Days in Golden (he lived in Golden and his grave is there on Lookout Mountain).

So we went to the site of the farmer's market and the parade was being staged there. We ended up going back to the main street to watch the parade. I love a parade! There were lots of horses and vintage cars and clowns and a drum corps and a jazz band doing a New Orleans funeral march (what that has to do with Buffalo Bill, we don't know). And BUFFALO BILL and CALAMITY JANE were there on horses!! Mom told me that they were not the real BB and CJ. I guess they are helpers like Santa has at the holidays. At the beginning of the parade, one young horse got frightened and bolted!!! Mom was ready to take me into a store to hide. But he ran down the street and Mom said there were lots of horse people around to catch and calm him.

There was a dog group representing a training company called "Sit Means Sit." It was fun watching the dogs run after balls and frisbees and then come and sit, etc. And the Westernaires were there doing formations on horse back. They are young girls from our county who perform all over the area.

A lot of the stores had water bowls out and a man gave me some biscuits. Lots of people stopped to pat me and scratch me and generally show me the love.....:>)

As the parade was winding down, Mom and Dad took me for a walk along the creek. Dad said to take me by the water, but Mom said I don't like water. So Dad said, "Cosmo, make a liar out of Mom." And I did. I got my paws wet in the creek! After all it was a warm day!

I love the farmer's market, but Buffalo Bill Days rocks! AND Mom says we are going to the farmers market next week! Life is still good in Cosmorado!

I had such a nice weekend being loved up by peeps! My Auntie Barb came over just to see me on Sunday! She lets me sit on her lap and pets me and tells me how handsome I am and on top of all that she brings me treats! Including Three Dog Bakery Cookies!! Oh boy!

Then on Sunday night, my Aunt Jo and Uncle Tom came to visit. And Uncle Tom gave me lots of great attention. Aunt Jo has something called "allergies," but I think she still likes me.

And today, Mom and Dad drove me up to the cabin to meet with a workman there. We drove back right away, which really confused me. We stopped for a picnic in Winter Park and I found some french fries on the ground. I ate them like a starved puppy! After our picnic Mom and I sat on a bench and she gave me a drink of water. While I was there, I attracted a whole group of peeple puppies. Some could barely walk and some were bigger. They asked if they could pet me and Mom said yes. The Dad came over and joined in on the petting, too!!! I felt like a rock star with all this love coming at me! The Dad told Mom they are researching to find a dog for their family. Mom said, "this is what a shelter dog looks like!" The Dad said they are going to a shelter or rescue for sure, so I felt I did my part as an ambassador for us rescues. When my Dad came to find us I was still surrounded by my peeple puppy fans and was lying on my back getting my belly rubbed by their Dad.

This was another great day in Cosmoland!

Mom told me about this ancient TV show, called the Mickey Mouse Club. Every week they would have an "Anything Can Happen Day!" They would sing..."Today is a day that is full of surprises. Nobody knows what's going to happen!" Today was that kind of day for me. First I happened to look at my pal Zak's page and I saw that today was his Gotcha Day! And I almost missed it! Then Mom checked our email account and found out that people have been commenting on my diary entries. We didn't know that this was going on! Dogster lost contact with our email address and it took us a long time to get a new one for Dogster use (glaring at Mom), but now we are notified when we have comments, rosettes, pmails, etc.

But the great thing is, we got to read a whole lot of comments from my Dogster pals, which was great fun!

The other surprises were just terrific. Mom and I did a ditch walk this morning and played a few rounds of fetch, then the clouds came over and we were planning to snuggle in for the evening. But the clouds blew out to the Eastern Plains, and we had a pretty, sunny and cool evening, so we went for another ditch walk. And to make life totally heavenly, Dad made buddy burgers for dinner, so I had one with my kibble.

I like Anything Can Happen Day! BOL! (Mom says this makes me an official "mouseketeer." I wonder if that is a good thing???????)

I have certain standards for fetch, one of which is: Whatever ball you start with is the only ball you may throw. Mom started out with my favorite glowball, which was great. Then she sneaked inside and got a new nylabone ball and threw it. I caught it, dropped it on the patio and picked up the correct ball and took it to Mom. NO FAIR CHANGING BALLS IN MID-GAME!!
Last week at the cabin, Mom and Dad took me on a great hike in the Arapahoe National Forest. The trailhead is only 3 miles from the cabin, so we were there in a jif. First we walked up a dirt road and then took off on one of the trails. It was all uphill and I got a real charge out of listening to Mom huff and puff. But she kept up with us! There were a lot of mosquitos out, so the peeps couldn't stop and rest on the uphill becuase the mosquitos would land on them and bite them. I had them on me, but my double coat kept them from getting any of my blood! BOL!

There was a steep drop-off and we could hear Parkview Creek down below. There were lots of pretty white spruce trees and lodgepole pines that were too young for the beetles to eat. Some of the trails were closed due to logging to get some of the beetle killed pines out. When we got back to the cabin, Mom took me for another walk just around the area, so that I could protect her from the chipmunks and squirrels!

We haven't had any moose around our place so far this year. We don't know why. Our neighbors say there's a very grumpy moose hanging around that challenges people. I hope that one stays away. I don't want to have to protect Mom from him.

Mom and Dad said that on our next trip we will hike on the Continental Divide Trail! I wonder if I can get a walking stick and fancy hat for that one????? BOL!

So today, Mom and Dad took me to Cosmo's Bakery (no relation-that Cosmo's a cat!). There were vet techs and a vet there cleaning the teeth of dogs and cats without anesthesia. It was great! Two nice ladies petted and scratched me and rolled me over on my back. One of them sat at my feet and rubbed my belly while the other one held my head in her lap (I think she had a crush on me....). The one at my head opened my mouth and scratched at my teeth and gums with the sharp thingie. It didn't hurt at all though. And the belly rubs kept coming... Believe it or not, the whole time I was there, there other patients getting their teeth cleaned were CATS! They meowed unceasingly, which was pretty annoying to me, especially since I was not allowed to chase them or even sniff them out!

After 1/2 hour, they took me out to Mom and showed her my nice white teeth. Mom says I look even more handsome than usual and she is happy that I did not have to be put under.

I have found a new way to guilt Mom into taking me for a walk. She seems to think that if we play three or more games of fetch in the yard, that is sufficient exercise for me. I love fetch, but I still want my walks. I mean, I have pee mail to check on and bushes to mark throughout the neighborhood. Not walking has a negative effect on my social networking system!!

So, yesterday when Mom threw out the ball for the first time. I just caught it and took it inside the house. Three times. So, Mom gave up and took me for a walk. Then we played fetch later in the day!!

I want a chance to give back to my community, since nice Animal Control Officers picked me up from the highway where I was wandering and took me to the shelter.
I had a GREAT time at the cabin. There were many, many rain storms, but we took long walks between them. While it rained, I snuggled up with Mom while she read her book. And I got the following good things to eat....a hot dog, a meat ball (!) some chicken stew with carrots and celery....all on top of my kibble. Good, good, good.....

The bad thing was a dearth of chipmunks at my cabin!!! I have left Mom a note to buy some sunflower seeds to lure them in close to the house. I did find some to chase near our friend's cabin.

The other problem I had was in inter-canine relations. I behaved quite well with Max, the Golden Retriever. His cabin has two sets of stairs and two doors and we each guarded one while the peeps were inside. And he let me chase his chipmunks, which was good.

But on our way back from Max's cabin, FOUR labs from the cabin next door ran out to greet me and we got into some growling. Mom was nervous because there were four of them and they are all one family. Last year I played with two of them and Carl the lab even let me pick up his marrow bone. But this year was a bit scary, so Mom told the labs mom that I was not being friendly and took me right home. Why did she blame me? There weren't four of me???

Back to the good stuff, I did meet up with a very sweet and charming shepherd mix visiting the cabin next door. I don't remember her name, but her smells were divine!!

So, all in all, life is still quite good here in Cosmorado!

So we are wondering if I will get a chipmunk on our first day at the cabin this Friday. Mom thinks I will have to do a lot of chasing and she is hoping I am unsuccessful. We shall see. I can't believe it's been since September that I've been up in North Park. Our neighbors will probably have their Golden up there this year. We didn't get along well the first couple of times we met, which is unusual for me. I hope we can be friends.
What a great time I had on our family road trip last week! I knew I was included when I saw that Mom was packing my bag with food, treats, toothbrush and brushes. We drove to San Luis where I joined the peeps in climbing the hill in town that features scuptures of the Stations of the Cross. There were these funny creatures zipping around in the rocks. Mom said that they were lizards and that we were in almost desert country! At the top of the hill, Mom and I found a cool place to rest while Dad took photos. That night we stayed in a motel in Alamosa. Mom and Dad took me on a walk on the road behind the motel. Since there was NO traffic, Mom let me off leash and I followed the scent to a dead prairie dog that I picked up to keep for a midnight snack. Evil Mom hit me on my nose with the leash to make me drop it and and put me on the leash and pulled me away from it. People just have no sense of fun at all!

The next morning we went to the park in Alamosa right next to the Rio Grande River. Since there was no shade near the restaurants, the peeps got a picnic lunch to eat with me under a tree in the park. I loved that park!

The next day we went to our favorite motel in Salida. When we checked in, I got water and food bowls and a nice handful of treats at the front desk. Unfortunately, they seemed to be all out of prairie dog carcasses for the weary canine traveler. Mom and Dad and I walked into town several times and on one trip we met my friend Jesse from the Dogster Dog Eared Book Club. He is a very cool guy. We went to the river and Jesse jumped right into the deep part and his Mom threw sticks for him. I am guessing that Jesse thinks I am a wuss because I don't like water at all. I did go in up to my ankles to be a good sport, but there were huge rocks on the shore and I was lizard hunting. I was happy to meet my Dogster friend and his Mom.

On our ride home we stopped Buena Vista to visit the park and the custard stand. The peeps had their annual frozen custard and shared it with me! This is a tradition on our trips home from Salida each year.

I think road trips are the best. I get to lounge in the back seat while the peeps drive me around and see to my every need. And in another two weeks, we will be off to the mountains to open up the cabin! Life is still good in Cosmorado!!

Mom and Dad decided to take me to Doggie Day Care yesterday, even though it was raining. We stayed in the inside play rooms, mostly. Mom and Dad were picturing me leading a game of "dogs playing poker." Then they went to lunch and an art show and saw our favorite dog sculptor, Dede LaRue's version of "Dogs Playing Poker" with a political twist! It's on her web site under Social Commentary. Miss LaRue also does dog rescue (Chinese Cresteds) and at one time was a groomer. So she really does a great job of dog sculpture. Here's her site for dog art lovers: http://www.ddlarue.com/portfolio/social.html

When Mom came to pick me up, she could see me milling around with the other dogs through security mirror. She thought I should have had a dogarita in my paw as I milled and visited with the other dogs. BOL! Now, when they let me up front to meet Mom, I jump up on the counter and try to get over it instead of going through the gate. Mom finds this embarrassing, but I think I'm being endearing!

Today we are having a snow and rain storm. So it's couch-potato Friday for me! BOL!

Yesterday Mom took me to see Doctor Batch for my annual physical. She had all my blood work from the hospital where I am a blood donor. So, Dr. Batch studied it and said I was perfect! Then he got down on the floor with me and checked me all over. My eyes, ears, teeth and organs all seem fine. And he checked my legs and back...after all my worries last year at this time I am totally great orthopedically!! Mom told him I run and jump into the car and on the bed and am totally energetic.

So, I passed my physical with flying colors!! I heard Dr. Batch tell mom not to tell me that I'm almost seven years old, because I don't seem to know it. BOL! I'm just young-at-heart. I got lots of treats from Dr. B and the vet assistant and lots of rubs and kisses. Dr. B. says I am a very unusual dog and he just loves me. Mom said they gave me a leptospirosis shot, but I didn't notice. Must have been when I was getting all those treats!

And today we walked at Crown Hill. Mom and I went back to the "unofficial" no leash area and I had a nice run! Saw lots of ducks and coots and what looked like an egret up in a tree. (???) We also met a lady walking with a big green parrot on her shoulder! What a day!

Last night Mom and Dad had peeps over for wine and cheese and desserts and because of my record of sending wine glasses flying with my tail, I had to stay out on the sun porch. I just napped and relaxed and no one heard a peep from me. I WAS a bit jealous of the parakeets, Larimer and LoDo, who got to chirp along with the discussion. Mom says that I am an exemplary dog and as a reward I am getting an extra day at doggie day care on Thursday! I can't wait! Last time Mom picked me up from DDD, I was so tuckered out, I slept on the short ride home. I can't wait!!

And tomorrow we are having our family portrait done for our church picture directory. I am going to wear my red bow tie and sit between Mom and Dad.

So I was out in the back with Mom today, having a lovely time. I was enjoying the warm sun, checking the perimeter of the yard and visiting with a little boy next door who had a BIG ball that he was throwing around. Mom was doing that yard work thing that the peeps love to do in the spring.

Then, what should appear next door on the other side of the house but a big, male yellow lab! I barked at him, telling him in no uncertain terms to stay away from my yard and my Mom! Then to my great shock and dismay, Mom sneaked out the back gate and went around to the dog and called him to her. Then she was petting him!!! How could she??!! To make things even worse, she brought him into MY yard. I ran up to him to tell him what I thought of that and he snarled at me!!! So Mom put ME inside and kept him outside. She read his tag and started calling him Duke. Then she got on that thing they put by their ear to talk to people and called his mom. While she waited for his mom to come, she went into MY doggie treat container and took out a handful of MY Charlie Bear treats. And gave them to him!! I saw this through the glass door. SHE GAVE HIM MY TREATS!!

Fortunately his mom came to get him before she gave him ALL my treats and all my toys and who knows what else.

I am totally upset and am not speaking to Mom!!! Ever!!! ....unless she has a treat for me.....or wants me to get up on the bed next to her while she reads.......oh dear......

On Wednesday, Mom and Dad went out and when they came back later they had three new people for me to meet! Their names were Adrienne, Michael and See Tsai. It was nice of them to come all the way from Blackburn College in Illinois just to meet me!! Mom says they were here on a concert tour, but I am sure it was just an excuse to meet me. Adrienne and Mike have two chihuahuas at home, so I pretended to be a chihuahua for them and sat on their laps and shared my nice long hair with them. I wanted them to stay for a long time, but Mom and Dad took them away the next morning. She says they were going to ski and then to sing at other places.

Today we walked almost 4 miles along Clear Creek in the Wheat Ridge Green Belt. It was nice and cool and there were only a few walkers and dogs out and about. I loved it.

But the best thing is that afterwards, Mom was making muffins for the peeps and told me she was going to try some super easy treats for me while the oven was on!! She got the recipe from a terrific book called Eco Dog and here it is:

1 cup wheat germ
two small jars baby food
mix
spoon 1" dollups onto a greased baking sheet
Flatten with a fork two ways....(like peanut butter cookies)
Bake at 350 for 25 minutes

We made 12 cookies with this recipe. I licked the bowl!!!

Mom used on jar of sweet potato and one jar of chicken and gravy baby food. These cookies are dynamite and you can make any flavor(s) you want!!

It's been a happy day in Cosmoland! Mom and Dad and walked to Applewood Park and Mom used her new camera to get snapshots for my Dogster pals. There were other dogs and kids in the park because it was so warm and sunny, so I had to stay on leash, but we did have the twenty foot retractible. The smells in the park are just yummy and I left a lot of messages for the other dogs and foxes and racoons. We walked all around the the park and around the office park and past the little lake and we just really had a nice time.

Then when we got home, there was a box on the front porch with MY NAME on it! It was from my sweet grrrlfriend Savannah from New Jersey. It was full of treats! I got bags of Taste of the Wild treats and a box of Doggie Croissants...non wheat, veggie. I am happy to see that my little rescue gal is rapidly becoming a yuppy princess! BOL!

I am so happy! Mom took me to my new Doggy Daycare at "The Den." She has enrolled me on an on-going basis, so I'll be going every other Thursday for the day! I just love it. There are about 30 dogs and two humans who stay with us the whole day. I love making friends with all the dogs and the humans too. Miss Joy is a Certified Vet Tech and a dog trainer and Mr. Andrew, her brother, manages the business. We have two big play yards outside and two big play rooms inside for when it's very cold or very hot outside. And we have a nap time in the middle of the day.

I have smelled many doggie butts and gotten the scoop on all my new friends! I used to be a Big Man on Campus at my last daycare place, so I hope to establish myself at the new school. I think Mommy should buy me a lunch box and fill it with sandwiches and Twinkies!!! BOL!

Mom and Dad and I took a nice walk to Applewood Park yesterday. Mom took some cool photos and videos and then noticed that the message in her view finder said "no memory card." BOL!

Mom noticed that I was burping all morning and then on my walk, I had the "runs." She could not figure out what was causing my digestive woes, but she kept an eye on me all day and fed me very little.

Then last night Dad went into the back bedroom, where some of my Secret Santa gifts are stored and found an entire bag of delicious, delectable Canadian duck treats from my pal Buddy had been totally destroyed and every treat eaten! Oh it was sooooooo good! Mom and Dad didn't get mad at me because I NEVER do bad things like that and they can understand the lure of the duck for a pointer mix. (Guess I don't have a "soft mouth!") Dad says that I am "foodie" like him!

This has been a wonderful holiday with terrific Secret Santa surprises and wonderful surprise from my pals Flecken and Spike. And I am looking forward to spending Christmas Day quietly with my family.

May every fur be so blessed and may every fur and furless one find warmth and love at this holiday time!

Mom and Dad and I have been going on "family walks" this week. We walked to Applewood Park. It was nice, but there was a group of workers raking up leaves, so I couldn't run off lead...only get to do that when there's no one around. Then Mom and her friend took me to Crown Hill Park...we walked the whole outer loop, plus my Auntie showed us a new area that opened up, so we did an extra loop there! Mom likes Crown Hill because it has great mountain views and it is not "landscaped." We like the natural prairie grasses, the paths and the lake. There are usually lots of geese and other birds around and sooooooo many good smells.

Finally, yesterday Mom and Dad and I walked thorugh Denver West office park to Whole Foods. Mom and I like to sit on the patio while Dad shops and he always brings us glasses of water on his way out. I feel so civilized drinking from a glass. BOL!

This week my pawrents and I went to our mountain place so they could winterize it and close it up for the year. And we wanted to enjoy the gorgeous September weather. When we pulled into our property, there were two cow moose and one bull having a nice graze on our grasses and wildflowers.

The first night was a shocker. Mom forgot to pack my food! But this ended up being a good thing when she cooked me some oatmeal and added some bratwurst and carrots! Not bad at all. The next morning Mom and I made the 50 mile round-trip into Walden to buy dog food. Mom was grooving on the view across North Park...the Never Summer mountain range in one direction, the mountains of the Rahwah Wilderness and the Rabbit Ears at the top of Rabbit Ears Pass that leads into Steamboat Springs were all visible around the valley. But for a dog, the ride was pure nose candy! I could smell deer, antelope, elk, moose, prairie dog, vole, jackrabbit, fox....it was a potpourri of the best smells in the world. Poor Mom with her limited human nose could only smell fresh air, tinged with sage.

As usual we had lots of walks, where the humans walk and I run, run, run!

At the end of the trip, while Mom and Dad drained water from the cabin, I went out to hunt chipmunk and finally, after a season of chasing, I caught and killed a chipmunk. I ate half of it and presented the other half to my pawrents and a year-end gift. But, Silly Humans, they didn't understand. They threw this marvelous treasure into the bushes. So, I retrieved it and ate it!

With this, I realized I had accomplished all my goals for the summer season!

...

It was in the newsletter of the All Breed Rescue Network here in Colorado. Here's what I wrote:

Giving Blood is Giving Back
By Cosmo Horner (Lu Horner, typist and personal assistant)

I’ve often heard people say, “dogs that are adopted from a rescue or a shelter to know that their lives have been saved and are forever grateful.” Well, I am here to tell you that it is true! I was adopted from a shelter and I will always be grateful to those who found me and took me to the shelter; to the staff and volunteers who took good care of me and worked to find me a home and of course to my “pawrents” who adopted me and made me part of the family.
So, I’ve often thought how great it would be if I could find a way to return the favor and give back to help other dogs. Then one day Mom told me about a canine blood bank right near our home. She said that I could donate my blood and it would be used to save the lives of dogs! In fact a single donation of blood can save more than one life because both the red blood cells and the blood plasma are used.
I was so excited about this that I asked Mom to sign me up right away. She called Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital and made an appointment to bring me in to apply to be a blood donor. I passed the first level of screening, because I am between 1 and 7 years old, in good health, not on any medications and over 50 pounds in weight. At this appointment a nice lady took some blood to test my type. I didn’t know that we dogs have many different blood types and that the type they are most interested in is DEA 1.1 negative. Because dogs are fully awake during the drawing of the blood, I also had to pass a test to show that I am friendly (!) and that I could tolerate lying down for the duration of the procedure. I passed all the screening tests easily.
So now I am an official blood donor! I am called to donate every three months. The process takes about an hour wit preparation and follow-up. Since we live near the blood bank, Mom drops me off and waits for a call that I am ready to be picked up. She says that if she were working, she’d be able to drop me off for a half day or even a whole day.
While I am lying there giving blood, I get “loved up” by the vet techs and told what a good boy I am. They give me treats and when I’m not looking, they even give me a free nail clipping. After the procedure, when Mom comes to pick me up, I get to pick a toy from a big bag of toys. This is my favorite part!
Mom is happy because after donating two times, I get free annual blood work, including free annual heartworm test. This will continue for as long as I am an active donor. And if I ever need blood, I’ll receive free blood products on a 1/1 basis until after two years as a donor.
My canine pals all tell me that I am a hero, but to tell the truth, I enjoy going to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital and getting pats and treats and toys. If you think your dog might enjoy becoming a blood donor and you live in the Denver metro area, call the blood bank coordinator at Wheat Ridge or visit www.wheatridgeanimal.com. If you live outside the Denver area, you might call your vet to find out if there is a blood bank near you. Different blood banks may have different screening rules and different rewards. No matter where you donate blood, it’s a wonderful way to know that you are helping to save the lives of other dogs.
Licks and doggie kisses from your canine correspondent,
Cosmo

Mom took me for our usual morning walk, down the street and up on the Agricultural Ditch path. We sometimes see fox there, but this morning we were walking along and there was ... A SWAN! It was beautiful, big and white and was sitting across the ditch from us. I was in such awe to see such a large and lovely bird, I didn't even bark. The swan saw us and calmly lowered itself into the water and drifted downstream. We followed it for a bit and then just stood there together admiring the swan. Then it turned and moved upstream. It looked like it was gliding, but its feet must have been paddling away.
We thought it was a great way to start our day!

It was so nice and relaxing at the cabin this week. It was also very strange because I am not allowed to run, jump or go for long walks until my lower back is re-evaluated. Mom and Dad and I usually take about a two mile walk each day, plus Mom and I do two or three shorter walks. This time, we sat around, although the humans did some chores. I was fine with being a gentleman of leisure.

I only got into trouble once, when I jumped off the porch to run after a chipmunk. I had a leash on me to keep me from doing this, and if Mom hadn't thought to drop it, she says I would have hung myself or broken my neck. Humans can be such over-reacters!

Since the trees are down, there are fewer squirrels and chipmunks to chase, so maybe while I am in resting mode they will reproduce!

Dawson and Hollidawg's Mom wrote a song just for me to the tune of White Christmas. This makes me feel really good, since my Mom has been diverting her attention from me to write songs for other dogs. I was mad about this, but Mom explained that Dogma's have love in their hearts for many dogs, although love their own dogs the very best!!

So with thanks to Dawson's Mommy:

I'm dreaming of a tuxedo'd doggie
Just like the one I love to own.
With a snow white belly
that's soft as well. He
dreams of rubs that make him moan.

I'm dreaming of a tuxedo'd doggie
A handsome boy who loves to hug
His name is Cosmo
I'm not his Mom, 'though
I do love to see his handsome mug.

I'm dreaming of a tuxedo'd doggie
With every stroke of his sweet fur
May your dreams be filled with delight
and may bellyrubbin' fill up your night.

Well ... my road trip with Mom and Dad was really cool. The first day was not real great, because when we got to Glen Isle, a resident Great Pyrenees with the name (IRONIC) of Angel, cornered me and went for my throat. One of the staff pulled her off of me and Mom discovered a puncture in my ear and treated it. I was very brave throughout, but did not fight back. She outweighed me by about 100 pounds! I just tried to get away!

Other than that, I ran around alot, laid around alot and ate alot!! What more is there? We went up on Kenosha Pass and walked on the Colorado Trail. We started at 10,000 feet elevation and walked uphill. The trail is through an aspen grove and then opens up with a view across South Park (yes, THAT South Park) to the Collegiate Range....Mt. Princeton, Mt. Yale, Mt. Harvard...very "Ivy League" mountains around there!

From our cabin in Glen Isle, we walked to the Coney Island Hot Dog stand. I stood in awe. That's one HUGE hot dog! My friend Spike says that Doxies are planning to take over the world and I believe that this is a temple for their worship....! Dad bought me my own hot dog and I attracted a crowd of tourists and entertained them by inhaling my hot dog without any chewing at all.

Salida is one cool dog town! Our motel is very dog friendly and offers dog biscuits at the registration desk. They also provided food and water bowls for me. We could walk into town from the motel and one day we walked for four hours straight. It's such a fun place. My Dogster friend Jesse told me to check out the Book Haven bookstore, so we did. There was a sign that said "Good Dogs Always Welcome," so Dad took me in. There was this big metal vase full of rocks holding the door open, so I knocked it over with my paw. I was SURE there was food in it, but no such luck. Mom was embarrassed and took me outside. sigh.

We drove to the top of Tenderfoot Mountain and while Dad took photos, Mom and I walked up a trail to see the other side of the hill. It was fun up there.

I just loved my road trip. And the best thing is that the pawrents planned this trip with me in mind. They said they didn't want to go on a trip where they would have to leave me behind. But then, who could blame them...I am such fun!

Last week was our last week at the cabin until next Memorial Day. I will surely miss it! I had lots of walks and since only a few people were around during the week, I was off leash all the time! While the pawrents painted the cabin, I hunted and hunted, chasing squirrels, birds and chipmunks. I realized a lifetime goal when I caught and killed a chipmunk. Dad took it from me and threw it into the woods. But when the pawrents weren't looking, I slipped off and ate it. Quite yummy.

Took lots of walks, too. And watched the moose who visited us. In fact, Mom had to keep me in one evening because a moose was by our driveway rubbing himself on our young baby pine trees.

Well, the cabin season is over, but the pawrents are talking about a special in-state trip with me later this month! I can hardly wait!

We were up at the mountain cabin when Mom and Dad told me to get in the car for a quick drive to the local Post Office. When we pulled up I saw the prettiest girl I had seen in Rand, Colorado. She is half Aussie and half Border Collie...a pretty russet and white girl. While Mom and Dad went in to talk to the Postmistress, she stood up at the car window to chat with me. Sigh!

Mom came back and told me that her name was Bruce and that the Postmistress had adopted her from a local rancher. She had been scheduled to be "put down" because she is not interested in working cattle. But what a lovely pet she makes! I am smitten!!

Mom let me out of the fenced yard to the open area behind out yard because my friend Sadie was barking at me. Mom thought she wanted to say hi at her fence. But she wasn't barking for me, she was barking at one of our neighborhood foxes! And I took off after it in a dash. Couldn't catch it though. Mom says that's because it was running for its life, while I was running for a bit of sport.

I am in the doghouse again even though I came right back. If the fox and I had gone in the opposite direction, we would have run into a busy street.
But I just cannot help it!

We just got back from the mountain cabin today. Mom is hardly speaking to me, but I can tell this won't last...

The man with the big saw came on Tuesday and took down about 75 trees that were dead from beetle kill. What we didn't know is that the squirrels living high in the lodgepole pines are killed when the trees come down with them....

Last evening, Mom and I were walking in the back and she wanted to check on her "dog cemetary." Right next to the river rocks with my late sisters' names there was a dead squirrel. So I picked up and ran! Mom started screaming "drop it!" and "leave it." But I was a mighty hunter with my prey and I ate the head right away. Mom came running and in desperation yelled things like "sit" and "come." But I was totally into my hunter/animal mode and those words meant nothing to me. I ran and ran with my prey and when I'd stop and Mom came toward me, I'd chew and swallow more and more of it. I ate the whole thing!!!

Mom yelled things like 'bad dog" at me and even swatted me on the nose!!!!
I have never been hit before and I'm not used to her yelling "bad dog!" So this was traumatizing for me. I went inside the cabin and hid behind a sofa. Later, she made up with me and calmed me down. I heard her tell Dad she'd have to watch me to make sure I don't get a blockage or something. I also heard her tell Dad I'd never have gotten the squirrel to eat if it weren't already dead. The INSULT of that!!!

Well, I'm trying to be the model of good behavior today. And I try not to laugh when I see mom examining my poo to make sure that things are passing...if you know what I mean!

What a wonderful week I've had, celebrating my Happy Adoption Day! First my pals on Dogster had a wonderful virtual barbeque featuring my Dad's "Buddy Burgers," burgers made just for me! Then we went up to the mountain cabin and I ran and ran. Mom and Dad were cleaning up brush and needed a lot of my supervision. I had to keep showing them how to get back to the brush pile. I didn't see Mable Moose this time, but our neighbors did. Only a few chipmunks and squirrels were around...they probably heard that I was coming and went off to plan their "evade the dog" tactics. I'll get them yet!

As I curled up on the sofa in the cabin at night, I thought about my time in the shelter. I remembered all the other dogs who were "doing time" with me. I hope they all got homes. But I feel so sad for those dogs who don't have the resilliant personality that I do. While I was kissing passers-by and wagging my tail for the volunteers, who took a special interest in me, I noticed other dogs who were just overwhelmed by the shelter experience. Some were so depressed that they just laid and faced the back of their run and didn't even look up at the people coming by to adopt. The poor dogs were so afraid and so unhappy that they couldn't do the things they needed to do to get adopted. So I thought about them and sent up a little prayer that they are somewhere safe and happy now. I sure am.
