Mom was watching on Dateline or something like that tonight. They were showing how the glachers were melting so fast because of us of corse. And how were scientists walked 5 years ago were there was ground is now water, or were there was snow is now green. And how the Penguin and other animal population has decreased by 50%.::o So mom went online to see how she chould help out more! And thought she whould share this with you! And hope you will try to help as well!

For more info go to: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/03/how-to-green-your-pet.php

What’s the Big Deal?

Ah, the pitter patter of four-legged feet as they whip through your living room at overclocked speeds or uproot your prize gladiolas with manic fervor. But Snookiepuss and Mrs. Fluffypants are practically family, right? So why should they settle for anything less than top drawer when their health and wellbeing are at stake? Throw the planet a bone while you’re at it; we’ve got the goods on how to reduce your pets’ carbon paw prints—without making your wallet roll over and play dead.

1. Adopt from a shelter

Pet breeders have only one goal in mind—to raise large quantities of purebred animals for profit. They’ve also been pilloried for misdeeds such as overbreeding, inbreeding, poor veterinary oversight, lousy food and living conditions, overcrowding, and culling of unwanted animals. Why buy when you can adopt one of the 70,000 puppies and kittens born every day in the United States? Love knows no pedigree. Check out Petfinder.com to find your perfect match.

2. Spay or neuter your pet

Did we mention 70,000 puppies and kittens are born every day in the United States? That’s 15 puppies and 45 kittens for every hairless biped that slides out of a birth canal. And “multiplying like bunnies” isn’t just any old trope. We don’t need any more homeless animals than we already have. As a bonus, spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives by eliminating the possibility of uterine, ovarian, and testicular cancer, and decreasing the incidence of prostate disease.

3. Rein in your pets; protect native wildlife

Always keep your dog on a leash when outside, and confine your mangy feline indoors. Topped only perhaps by habitat destruction, cats are the biggest, baddest bird killers of all time. Even wind turbines have got nothing on them. While you may poo-poo high cat-related bird-mortality rates as collateral damage in the great Circle of Life, domestic cats do have an unfair advantage. Unlike wild predators, house cats are always well fed, well rested, and in tip-top fighting shape. They’re also present in more concentrated (and rapidly increasing) numbers than say, the San Clemente Loggerhead Shrike.

That aside, two out of every three vets, according to the Humane Society of America, recommend keeping cats indoors, because of the dangers of cars, predators, disease, and other hazards. The estimated average life span of a free-roaming cat is less than three years; an indoors-only cat gets to live an average of 15 to 18 years. If kitty needs to heed the call of the wild, an outdoor cat enclosure is a good compromise.

4. Swap out the junk food

Most conventional pet-food brands you find at the supermarket consist of reconstituted animal by-products, otherwise known as low-grade wastes from the beef and poultry industries—you know, inedibles you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot fork. In fact, the animals used to make many pet foods are classified as “4-D,” which is really a polite way of saying “Dead, Dying, Diseased, or Down (Disabled)” when they line up at the slaughterhouse. Unless that can of Chicken ‘N Liver Delite explicitly states that it contains FDA-certified, food-grade meat, you should know that its contents are considered unfit for human consumption—but apparently good enough for your cat or pooch.

Now, since nutrition is one of the key determinants of health and resistance to disease, ideally you’ll want your pet’s chow to be comparable in quality with what we would eat.

Natural and organic pet foods use meats that are raised in sustainable, humane ways without added drugs or hormones, minimally processed, and preserved with natural substances, such as vitamins C and E. Certified-organic pet foods must meet strict USDA standards that spell out how ingredients are produced and processed, which means no pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, artificial preservatives, artificial ingredients or genetically engineered ingredients.

(Hemp dog beds from Earth Dog)

5. Clean up their poop

Scoop up your doggie doo in biodegradable poop bags so your buddy’s No. 2 isn’t immortalized in a plastic bag, while deep-sixed in a landfill somewhere for hundreds of years. Cat owners should avoid clumping clay litter at all costs. Not only is clay strip-mined (bad for the planet), but the clay sediment is also permeated with carcinogenic silica dust that can coat little kitty lungs (bad for the cat). Plus, the sodium bentonite that acts as the clumping agent can poison your cat through chronic ingestion through their fastidious need to groom. Because sodium bentonite acts like expanding cement—it’s also used as a grouting, sealing, and plugging material—it can swell up to15 to18 times their dry size and clog up your cat’s insides. Eco-friendly cat litters avoid these problems; a happy cat is a cat that doesn’t claw your face off.

6. Give them sustainable goods

Your furry friends can get in on some saving-the-planet goodness, too—and have plenty of fun—with toys made from recycled materials or sustainable fibers (sans herbicides or pesticides) such as hemp. A hemp collar (with matching leash) is a rocking accessory for a tree-hugging mutt. These days, you can even get pet beds made with organic cotton or even recycled PET bottles.

7. Use natural pet-care and cleaning products

You don’t use toxic-chemical-laced shampoos and beauty products, so lather up your cats and dogs (or ferrets, rabbits, or hamsters—we don’t judge) with natural pet-care products, as well. And if your cat horks up a hairball, or Fifi doesn’t make it all the way to the bathroom, clean up the mess with cleaning products that are as gentle on the planet as they are on your critters’ delicate senses.

8. Pets, not fads

Sure, everyone’s ovaries ping when they see a five-year-old moppet cradle a tiny chick or a bunny during Easter, but nature dictates that baby bunnies grow up into rabbits, and little chicks into full-size chickens. Unless everyone involved understands that a pet is a long-term commitment that involves demands on both their time and money, you’re better off giving the kid a stuffed animal. Impulse buying (say, rushing out an grabbing the next available Dalmatian puppy after watching 101 Dalmatians) isn’t a good idea, either, as the large numbers of fad dogs that pass through shelters (often to their death) can attest. Repeat after us—especially you, Paris Hilton: Pets are not fads or fashion accessories.

9. Melt the ice, nicely

Use a child- and pet-safe deicer such as Safe Paw’s environmentally friendly Ice Melter. Rock salt and salt-based ice-melting products, which kids and animals might accidentally ingest, can cause health problems, while contaminating wells and drinking supplies.

10. Tag your pet

It might be a stretch to call inserting an electronic ID chip into your pet an eco-friendly move, but losing your buddy causes extreme emotional distress that turns you into nobody’s friend. Then there’s the paper waste from printing out Missing posters, the fuel cost of driving around your neighborhood trying to find them, the phone bill as you bawl your eyes out to everyone you know … well, you get the idea. Ask your vet for more info. For hanging tags, check out these recyclable (and recycled) aluminum ID tags and these WaggTaggs made from recycled silver.

Wanna Do More?

1. Compost their poop

American dogs and cats create 10 million tons of waste a year, and no one knows where it’s going, according to Will Brinton, a scientist in Mount Vernon, Maine, and one of the world’s leading authorities on waste reduction and composting.

Most of our pets’ poop either winds up in a landfill purgatory, where it’s embalmed practically forever in plastic bags, or sits on the ground until the next rainstorm washes it into the sewer where it can drift on down to rivers and beaches. You can compost the poop—just don’t use it with your vegetable garden, because the compost doesn’t heat up enough to kill pathogens such as E. coli., which could contaminate your homegrown produce and land up in your (very unhappy) belly.

If you have room in your backyard, you can bury an old garbage bin (note: far away from your vegetable garden) to use as a pet-waste composter. Or check out the Doggie Dooley. The makers of the Doggy Dooley also sell an enzymatic “Super Digester Concentrate” for your backyard pet septic system.

2. Be a pet chef

If you want to know exactly what is going into your furball’s food dish, or your pet suffers from allergies, you can always make your own puppy (or kitty) chow. If the idea of becoming a fulltime pet chef is just crazy talk, making the occasional meal or treat is completely doable. Those broccoli stalks left over from your last stirfry also make some tasty morsels for your pup.

3. Get crafty

Your cat will love you forever if you grow your own organic catnip or cat grass. Scrap yarn and fabric you might otherwise toss can also easily be transformed into pet toys with some basic crafty know-how. And they wouldn’t have had to be trucked thousands of miles just to get drooled on.

4. Get ticks off

While you don’t want to douse your pet in toxins, it is also important to keep the bugs in check. Pets can carry ticks, and ticks can carry Lyme Disease, a serious and poorly understood disease that attacks the nervous system. If you live in an area where Lyme Disease is a risk, be very cautious and seek sound advice on keeping ticks off you and your furry friends.

5. Offset your pet

Maybe Scruffy will only drink water from an electric-powered water fountain, or perhaps you have a self-cleaning litter box from before you went green—we all have corpses buried in our backyards. Why not purchase green tags, otherwise known as renewable energy credits, to offset your pets’ carbon emissions. Heck, buy ‘em for the whole family so no one feels left out. Or better yet, check if your state sells green power so you and your furry compatriots can go carbon neutral.

By The Numbers

1. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service estimates that domestic cats kill more than 39 million birds annually—and that’s just in Wisconsin.

2. There are over 66 million pet cats in the United States; approximately 35 percent are kept exclusively indoors.

3. Certain studies have shown that children who grow up with two or more pets are more than 75 percent less likely to develop allergies later in life.

4. Sixty percent of pet owners have a dog; on average owners have almost two dogs (1.7).

5.Over 5,500 puppies and kittens (compared with 415 human babies) are born every hour in the United States.

6. The U.S. Dept. of Health found that 28 percent of heart patients who were also pet owners survived serious heart attacks, compared with 6 percent of patients without pets.

7.In 1994, Time magazine estimated that as many as 25 percent of purebred dogs were afflicted with serious genetic problems.

8. Shelter workers nationwide are forced to euthanize an estimated 3 to 4 million homeless cats and dogs each year.::o

Mommy went to the doctor yesterday and found out it is a BOY!!!!!

They were kind of hopeing for a girl but whould be happy either way. But so far it is a very healthy baby boy.

The doctor doing the ultra sound said he whould it stop moving, and when they went to see what the sex was she said it was a boy and then he covered up his stuff with his hands. Mom thought that was very funny.

But mom says that having a boy evens the odds in are house alittle more since there is 3 of us girl dogs, 1 girl cat, & mom. So dad has another boy in the house.

Mom already started her gift registry at Walmart.com. and is so happy to be able to start buying things.

Well last Fall she took some grooming classes, (Something she really wanted to do, but ended up getting a job she really wanted at the Northeast Missouri Humane Society) and her teacher told her about the Kennel Club.

It has Obenince, Agility, Etc classes, and mainly a big meet up for dog lovers every week. So she visted acouple of classes and loved it. But so much went on after that that she never got to sign up, and then forgot.

Well are groomer is the daugter of her grooming teacher and was talking about how fun there Halloween partey was and that mom should start going.

So we started going last night, it was so much fun, I am the first one getting lessons and mom and the trainer said I did great!

Mom almost thought we were going to be late because she had to drop off some dogs that were going for transport to a rescue and that took longer then it useally does.

But after we got there we ended up seeing the women that does transport for us up there. She told mom she should of told her we were going. (Because mommy already paid for are first bunch of classes.) Because she said since I do transport for her and work at the shelter they whould of waved my fee. How cool is that.

But mommy is so happy to have something to go to, to get us and her out of the house. She has been so busy with work, and the upcoming baby stuff. We all need it, bol

Well Lady did it get to go, want to do some training classes first, better safe then sorry.

We had so much fun, we have never seen so many people and dogs in one place before! There was so much to do, and so much free stuff!

So far they said mommy raised $150.00. But the donations made threw pay pal were not counted, unless the person email, called, or faxed telling them what they donation was for. They said they would call mom when the know the right amount. But thanks so much guys that is a great # for are fist event.

Well for the actual walk there had to be like 2 miles worth of people/ dogs lined up. There were cows, penguins, lamas, houses, an alligator, and police dogs, etc. Everything you could imagine there.

Oh and we got stopped by the St. Louis paper, they told mom you guys are it. Mom was like huh, they said they wanted a couple great dogs in outfits for an article for the paper. And they said Missy and Mia were the cutest they have seen all day. They took a ton of pictures, and asked a bunch of ?. Missy & Mia were also photographed for a local shelter magazine, and a website. (Not many dogs dress up there, we say a handful. But most of them wear bandanas.)

Oh and MIA WON 1ST PLACE IN THE SLOW POKE RACE. We won a $50.00 gift card to a local grocery store, and both Missy and Mia won a Kong Toy.

Mom got some great pics you can check them out here: http://spotted.hannibal.net/pages/user_detail.php?user=10842 6
GO TO THE: St. Louis Bark in the Park 07 GALLERY! (THERE IS 5 PAGES OF PICS!)

Mommy is it really the best at telling stories, but she will do her best!

Her story starts in a small town trailer park, not much is know on her mother. All we know is that at one time she use to have a home, and at some point was lost or abandoned. She wasn’t spayed, which in a way is a bad thing for a dog that runs around. But in another way it was a good thing, because you wouldn’t know the great dog that I am talking about now. And I would have never gotten her in my life. Which I don’t know what I would have done with out her growing up. But anyway on with the story.

After having a litter of puppies, (Missy being one of them.)someone called Animal Control concerned about the puppies, and the mother. So Animal Control came out, and took the mom and the litter of pups to the local shelter. That is were my grandma saw them, and picked Missy out. She had gone to the shelter to adopt a dog for me. I had always wanted a dog of my own. And after moving to a new place and the passing of my father, she thought adopting a dog would be good for me.

I remember the day that she brought her home to me. I got off the bus and to my surprise my grandma was there. She told me to go inside and see the surprise she had got me. I never figured it to be a dog. I was it shock when I opened the door, and this little pup was staring at me, I could it move or anything. My grandma said well do you like her? That got me out of the trance that I was in. And I picked her up, and she started licking all over me.

Well to fast forward a little bit, after having her a couple of weeks, I still hadn’t found a name for her. I was stomped on what to name her. And one weekend I went to a sleep over with some friends. And when I got back my mom said she had went nuts with out me there, she said she keep searching for me, thinking that I abandoned her. (Something I would have never done, I love animals to much to do that. But sad she thought that.) She had also told me that she had missed me very much. And that is how she got her name, Missy. Because when I was gone she missed me so much! She is now 8 and she has had a great 8 years of life. She has been so spoiled & loved.

So if you are ever weary about adopting from a shelter don’t be! They have some of the greatest dogs and cats there. I know I have 3 dogs and 1 cat from there. And they are the best!

Bark the herald angels sing! Best wishes this holiday season! I was sleeping soundly (while visions of Greenies danced in my head), when my human looked up from her mug of cocoa and asked me, “So, Melody, what do you want for Christmas?” Ignoring my first instinct, which was to snarl and go back to sleep, I decided to come up with a list of ten things I would like to see under my tree this year. And so without further ado, I present to you All I Want For Christmas by yours truly, Melody Belle.

A Bigger Bed: While it is nice to sleep in the big bed with my mommy, daddy and sister Emma they tend to take up too much room. I would like to have a bigger bed (complete with soft feather bed and clean duvet) in which to stretch out and snooze.

A car: Sure walk-walks are fun, but I don’t get to where I need to be fast enough on four paws. I don’t ask for much: just a 2005 Volkswagen Beetle (chrome) with a booster seat so I can reach the pedals. And a snack bowl complete with snacks.

A Kitty Slave: Luckily for Santa, the house already comes equipped with a kitty. All he has to do is make it my slave. She should bring me toys, bone-bones, blankets and errant bugs upon my request.

DVDs: Specifically, Otis and Milo, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Lady and The Tramp, Cats and Dogs, Benji, Snow Dogs, Dogma and Monty Python’s Holy Grail. (I know there are no dogs in that one, but it’s funny and it makes me howl.)

A Gilded Crate: Don’t get me wrong, I love my crate (it’s equipped with every possible canine amenity) but I could do with something fancier to impress the other pups.

A Cat Torture Device: Otherwise known as a “squirt gun.”

Peanut Butter Flavored Water: Santa is crafty; I expect he’d know a way to work out the logistics.

Eau de Rodent Morte: Scent of dead squirrel or mouse is a classic in doggie perfume and I would be the toast of the town!

A Kitty Slave: Ok, I know I said this already but I really want this!

Adoration: Actually, my humans give me all the adoration I could ever desire, but I just want Santa to make sure it never stops!!! Kisses and squeezes are my favorite gifts!

So, if you see Santa or one of his elves, pass this list along! When my human read it she laughed and I’m afraid she thinks it was a joke. Be sure to tell him I won’t bite him again this year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Christmas is for humans, and I will not ruin the surprises by opening all their presents.

Christmas light bulbs, Christmas ornaments, Christmas stockings, and tinsel from the Christmas tree are not food.

I am the alpha dog, therefore I do not need to protect my new Christmas rawhide from the omega dog by taking it outside to eat when the wind chill is -10 F.

I will not demolish the Christmas tree and drag the string of lights out into the backyard through the doggy door.

I will not dive into the Christmas tree to get the candy canes (which I will eat -- paper and all).

I will not eat my Christmas doggie treats until after they're out of the stocking!

I will not even THINK about going underneath the Christmas tree and piddling on the dining room rug.

I will not get into a fight with the bigger dog next door, making my human have to call the vet's at Christmas.

I will not get tangled up in the Christmas tree lights and pull the tree down while trying to get at a cat through the conservatory window.

I will not pee on Grandma's Christmas presents that are under her tree as soon as we enter her house.

I will not pee on the Christmas tree.

I will not steal the neighbor's Christmas light bulbs.

The bowl underneath the Christmas tree is not a dog dish. I will not drink from it. It will make me sick.

Today is 4th of July hip hip hooray lets celebrate are nation’s birthday! Sorry just a little excited today. It is going to be so much fun, and mommy is feeling a lot better so we get to go out today. Well we all dressed up festive and went to downtown Hannibal. They still have National Tom Sawyer day’s thing’s going on. Well we watched the National Tom Sawyer fence painting contest. That was sure fun, they got paint all over them. And then we looked at all neat stuff people were selling. Everyone thought we looked really cute. And had to stop and pet us are talk to mommy about us. Which she is use to it because she gets that all the time.

After we looked around we headed to the riverfront mommy deiced we should take some picture’s before it got to dark and before we had to get seat’s to watch the firework’s. Well we found some good seats, but it took forever for the show to start. Me and Mia got kind of tired while we were waiting. Mia started to fall asleep on mommy’s lap and I started to fall asleep on daddy’s lap. And shortly after the show started it was great. Mommy say’s it is the best one she has ever seen. After the show was over we headed back to the car and went home to go to sleep. That was the best 4th of July ever!

GUESS WHAT I WON BEST BECKY!

Well today was the day for the Tom Sawyer Day's Pet Show! It was great I won Best Becky, and Mia got Honorable Mention. She was it disappointed though because she win's thing's all the time. And she was so proud that I won something for a change. But I got a nice shiny plaque and t-shirt. And it was so much fun to see and meet all the other dogs in the contest. We did it even think we were going to win. So it was a shock when they called are name out.

After the contest we all went out to eat. And talked about the Pet Show. After that we went to are local groomer's to show her are costume's she had to work so she asked us to stop by. And after we got done there we all went home to relax. But we could go to bed early we had to stay up to watch both local news stations 10:00 news and guess what?! We all were on both of them. It was such a good day and what make’s it better is that I have never won anything before!

Today we went to the Northeast Missouri Humane Society Parade. We had to get up really early to get ready. We all took bath’s, brushed are hair, brushed are teeth and got dressed. We got there a little early and registered. There was a lot dog’s that showed up. I was having a lot of fun socializing, and Mia was sunbathing and watching everyone in her float.

While mommy was socializing with other dog owner’s, a police officer came up to her and asked if they could borrow my ear’s to put them on there German Shepard for a picture. He looked so funny, and he did it look so scary anymore with them on.

Well shortly after the parade started. And daddy walked me and mommy walked Mia.
And we saw are local Channel 7 TV station taping the event. And we were told it was going too broadcasted on the 10:00 news’s that night. We walked down the whole street till the parade came to an end.

Then at the end of the parade they announced who had won the certain categories for the parade. Mia had won 1st place in best float. And I got Honorable Mention in cutest bunny. We both got lots of good’s from the event. A lot of people wanted to take picture’s of us after we had won. So we stuck around for the pictures.

And then we went home. I was happy to go to the event. But I was so tired when I got home. But I was glad to have lots of fun, and loved winning all that stuff. Later that night we ended up watching the news and to are surprise, Mia was on there twice and mommy, daddy, and I were on there once.

Dear Dogydiary,
Well today Mommy's brother came over with his dog Suzie today, she is a Blue Heeler. And I got Mommy all to my self on the couch today. I guess Mia and Squirt were really tired because they were still sleeping in Mommy's bed most of the day.

Then Mommy took us outside for awhile. She was trying to teach Squirt how to fetch. But he just ran up to the ball and sat there. I was having so much fun though. Running around and chancing Squirt and Mia.

The rest of the day I am going to stay inside and watch Animal Planet and watch over Mia and Squirt. Mommy is going out tonight, so I am head of the House tonight. Well till next time my Dogydiary.

Guess what I have a boyfriend! His name is Lucky, he is so… cute. Mommy say’s we look like a really cute couple. He is planning on taking me out for a date. I don’t know were yet, but I can’t wait.

Mommy just found out about Doggie groups. They sound like they are really fun. I think Dogster does a great job on pleasing us dog’s. There is a Fashion Contest and a Sportiest Dog Contest going on in one of the group’s. Me and Mia are going to enter Fashion Contest that, and Squirt is going to enter the Sportiest Dog Contest. Well till next time my Dogydiary.

Dear Dogydiary,
Wow my very first Dogydiary entry! Well Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone had a fun and safe New Year. We sure did, Mommy made sure we did. We dressed up and watched Animal Planet, and counted down to the New Year. And Mommy gave us some new toy's to play with. She spoil’s us so much, but I am not complaining.

Well today being the fist day of the year. Mommy took us out for a walk in the woods. I love the wood's I grew up in the country so I know my way around. Squirt was so funny though. He has never been in the woods so he did it know what to do. And Mia act's like a princess, Mommy ended up having to carry her on the way back. But it was so much fun I love nature. The rest of the day we relaxed inside and played, while Mommy did some indoor chores. Tonight we are going to sit down and watch a movie together, I hope it is good. Well till next time my Dogydiary.
