Marty is still the perfect dog. He still learns new tricks, to the delight of my grandchildren and students, and can now "sit pretty", "dance" and chase his tail, as well as the old stuff.

He and my 4 y/o granddaughter are inseparable. When she was a baby, he would get upset when she started to walk, and would hurry over and wrap his whole body around her legs to protect her. Of course, that would make her lose balance and fall--onto him. Then she'd cry and he would kindly stick his tail in her face and wag it to distract her. :) For a long time, they had a symbiotic relationship with food. Thank goodness that has stopped....mostly.

We have adopted the rule that food dropped...ahem!...by accident onto the floor is Marty's. Even though he is now a senior, he can still occasionally be tempted to play by insistent puppies.

Mommy went to Curves, and then she took me across the street to walk. Well,
let me tell you, that walk didn't last long. I saw something across the
field that stopped me in my tracks, but only for a second. She was pulling
at her leash just as much as I was. It was L O V E at first sight. I
sure wish they hadn't fixed me. You should have seen her. Her name was
Lola (Haven't I heard that somewhere before?), and she looks like a show
dog, she's so beautiful. I always fall for the older wome... dogs. Female dogs. She's two. We finally convinced our mommies to let us off our leashes, even though it isn't an off-leash park, at least not where we were. Her mummy was afraid to let her off the leash in the off-leash park because it was too close to the street. Anyway, she's faster than I am. I can keep up, but I get tired more quickly. I'm going to have to work on that. She won't wrestle with me, like Sam does...after all, she's a lady. But we jumped back and forth and ran and ran. My mummy told her mommy about dogster and Saxe Point, and I think we have a date for tomorrow. Woof!

Mommy took me to Clover Pt. this morning. I chased a dog who was chasing a ball for a while. We practiced "come" at several strategic moments, reinforced with treats. Mommy said I was pretty good. I did "attack" yet another little Oriental lady when we walked down to the beach. (Attack means I jumped on her enthusiastically, grinning). She was not pleased, but hey, she's in an off-leash park. I fell in love with a young blind woman and her boyfriend/husband, and was really good with them. Then I chased some crows who were duly compliant. Mommy swears they are playing with me on purpose. We had a LONG walk along the beach. I'm afraid of the waves. I slip on the seaweed, but I don't mind much. Mommy took me home and gave me a B A T H.

David came over today to install a program. He asked to see me. After my mommy warned him to brace himself, she let me out of the kitchen and I roared to the computer room, came to a halt next to David and jumped all over him, then stood quietly, thought for one second...and peed at his feet. I couldn't think of a more appropriate manner to say hi.

This has been one of Marty's less obedient days. He fell in love with an Oriental lady on his walk this morning, the problem being that she's afraid of dogs. What she's doing in an off-leash park is beyond me. Maybe I should have enlightened her.
He was very good while I went to the gym, to my massage, to the McPherson, and then when we got to Saxe Pt., around 9:45, the only ones there were Dieter and his "brother" (sister?) the dalmation. Sam & Pippin got there about 20 minutes later. We stayed until 10:55.

He played with his best buddy Sam, and Sam's new baby brother, Pippin, who is just learning how to play. They had some good tag games and "Try To Take My Stick Away" games.

Pippin is playing more now. It's surprising how good Marty is with him. I'm so proud of him. Pippin is adorable.

Sam is definitely the owner of the park. He has to approve all arrivals. Marty is just the PR guy. He makes everyone feel welcome.

News: A package just came, and Marty "told" me there was someone at the door. :) This is new for him. He practically licked him to death, of course, and was about to go off with him, as well. The delivery guy loved him. Good thing "Fang" was in a good mood, or we could get sued for everything. LOL. I ordered him, "ATTACK!!" and he paid no attention. Allan says the proper command is "Kill!" So THAT'S what went wrong! The guy walked away completely unscathed. He is probably completely unaware of how much danger he was in. His innocence protected him.

Marty just dug up one of my plants.

Are you bringing Marty tomorrow?

I hope so. I'd love to see Marty.
I'll bring my camera and some doggy treats :- )

There is a great dog run at Tower Point we could do.
Have you ever been there?

Tippy has difficulty venturing out now.
He is deaf, his eyesight is poor
and he is pretty wobbly on his feet.
Poor Tippy is 119 dog years old.

We've had him for 16 years. He was 1 when he
arrived.

Looking forward to lunch,

I am about to give Marty a bath. A man was at Saxe Point Park with two big dogs. One was a female bloodhound cross, the other, a male Rotweiller. The female decided Marty was one of her 13 long-lost puppies, and played with him, barking and growling... It was really scary to watch, but Marty and she had a great time. Then Sam and Pippin came and joined in, along with Ivy, an elegant, diamond-studded standard poodle. It was really something to see, but Marty got all slobbered on --he looked like he'd gone down to the water--and that, mixed with the dirt... YUCK! Kathleen got pics. Marty--the Rottweiller puppy!

Sam, Marty and the other little dogs played nicely as could be expected with the giant mother-dog trying to play with them. Marty and she were playing before Sam got there, and then, of course, Sam tried to get between them to "protect" Marty. She scared me, but meant no harm, other than playing pretty rough. She kept trying to get at his halter. Straaaaange.

Marty is delightful. He's just mischievous enough to be spunky, but he's so sweet, too. He's very friendly. He goes up and greets every dog and person he sees. He has now learned that some people and some dogs don't like to be bothered, and has learned to be polite. On the other hand, if the other dog wants to play, he doesn't care how big or little it is. As far as running, only the Boston bulls and the whippet can beat him. He rarely barks. He is litter trained, but will go outside just as easily. He's been to obedience school, and knows his basic commands. He LOVES going anywhere in the car. He comes when he's called...usually. He won't jump up on people unless they start making a fuss over him or say something to him. Me, on the other hand...if I don't pay atention to him, he bounces off me, over and over again until I react. He's adorable.

I just got back from a nice walk with Marty. He was such a good, obedient dog this morning! He didn't jump up on anyone unless they stopped and stooped down to talk to him, and then, of course, he went crazy. He did chase 2 crows... :( ("We DON'T CHASE BIRDS!!") He did the "mad dog" thing all by himself with a candy wrapper. He socialized with a couple of border terriers...until a bigger dog came by and they decided to pretend to attack him. He ran around a bit with a couple of old corgis. He came each time I called him, and stayed when I told him. When we got to the car, he jumped in the back and stayed while I closed the gate. Such a good puppy!! :)

He really is adorable, you know. There were two women there who were just SOOO impressed with how obedient and well-trained he was. Oh, and I forgot to mention that he peed and pooed, too. :) In the park. :D

I think someone exchanged him when we weren't looking.

You wouldn't believe how well Marty is behaving all of a sudden!! He's a different dog. He's still happy-go-lucky, but he doesn't jump all over people anymore, no accidents in the house.... Amazing! They say it's because he got fixed. Hmmmm.... I wonder if that works with humans.

We went to Clover Point. There were a lot of big dogs and I was nervous at
first, but then we met a medium-sized dog who let Marty run circles around
her for a while. On our way back to the car, we met Jackson, an 11 week
old lab. They had a GREAT time. He met several big dogs, some on leashes,
and all were pleasant, but no one wanted to play except for Jackson. I met
a nice couple with a 5-yr old dog who tolerated Marty. The good thing? He
pooped and later he LIFTED HIS LEG TO PEE. Well, he didn't lift if REALLY high.

Marty is pretty tired out, believe it or not. Both puppies stopped playing after a while, it was so intense. Marty had more stamina than the other, though.

Marty was bitten on the face by another dog (an old Corgi named Buster) late this morning at the dog park, and is being sewn up under anaesthetic right now. They are neutering him and tattooing him at the same time.

Later: He's fine right now, but hampered by a cone. They took the oportunity to neuter and tattoo him at the same time. I found out from other dog owners in the area that at least two of them have been bitten by the same dog. Unfortunately the owner is really nice, and I had to be the one to complain, but my dog did nothing to his other than try to beat him to a treat. The wound was on his nose, and was pretty serious. Luckily I bought PetInsurance.

I'm completely stunned. It just didn't occur to me that this would happen. Yes, the man said he wasn't good with puppies, but I didn't know it was THAT bad... I just thought he'd nip him, and Marty would learn a lesson.

The owner is very nice, and so is his other dog. At first, when we appeared there with Marty, he'd take the dogs for a walk, rather than be in the play area, and told us he wasn't good with puppies. I hated the fact that this man wasn't able to have his dog play with the others, just because of Marty. In the past couple of weeks, Marty has learned to leave the older dogs alone, and so the man has been staying there for a while, and we discussed the fact that Marty might need a lesson to keep him away from the other dog. I thought it would be like what the other older dogs do with puppies. Actually, Marty didn't bother him. Someone was giving out treats, and the dogs were all there, begging... (This is an off-leash park.) The owner was mortified and offered to pay the vet bill. I felt physically sick over the whole incident--even more as the day went on. The vet showed me the wound. It was SO deep!!!

Upon our return from our trip:

Hi kids

We got in at midnight last night. We wonder which of you lucky inividuals has Marty at the time. Allan is sure you are enamored with him and do not want to part with him, but if for some reason you do wish to part with him, you can reach us on Joan's cell. She, for some strange reason, REALLY misses him.

Thanks!

Allan (Dad) and Joan

----------

Alas... i do not have Marty. I actually AM enamoured with him, but i got busted in my building with a dog and threatened with a $200 fine. *sigh*... he was nice to have around.

Talk to aliza & bryan. And tell Marty i miss him. *sniff....

I was attempting to make it my mission to train him in 6 days, before you got back. I heard a rumor you two were getting tired of him. He chews a little, but he's just a puppy! He just needs some attention and play-time. And some room to run around.

Lets see, i got him on Wednesday after work, then i took him out on Thursday to visit a friend who has a little dog too, and got busted sneaking him back in... he barked for like a minute solid while i was saying goodbye to my friends. So Friday evening aliza came and picked him up again. So sounds like about 2 days.

He's a cutie. I wish i could have a dog. But i'm not home enough for one anyways i suppose... I think i am just starved for dog-attention. I miss cecil, and not having a puppy around is wearing on me. I am so a dogperson.

Hope you had fun!

Hi Erica,

I admire your intended mission, and am sorry you didn't get the opportunity to implement it. Oh well...

I'm not getting tired of him....yet. Exasperated? At times, yes. I'm too old for this. But he's adorable. We were taking him out every day, a couple of times, and tried as best we could to find playmates for him. He really loves to play, even with big dogs. He has no fear, which is kind of scary at times.

Thanks for enjoying The Martster,

I bought a bitter repellant for Marty. It tastes AWFUL. (Don't ask how I know.) It doesn't seem to matter much to him, but we'll see. At least he doesn't lick it off with relish, like the last one. I have sprayed the furniture. I sat out in the living room with him and his toys. We had a serious talk... I also bought a booklet that has some good ideas in it.

I also bought him a toy. He LOVES it. It's a stuffed dachsund, very long, with a quiet squeaker in it.

I put his harness on. It barely fits. It will probably be too small in 2 weeks.

We went to Saxe Point dog park today. There were several big dogs, and he made friends...sort of...with a young German shepherd and a black lab. They were good with him, and he was not intimidated at all. He played a bit with the shepherd. He played more with a 20 lb. something-or-other who's name is Sam, and he's a regular. Sam's owner says there is a big "little dog" meet there around 3:30 or 4 each day, which should be perfect for Marty. Marty got lots of attention. He has been a good boy today....so far. He has been nice when I have picked him up, and did not bite. Sometimes I think he's getting it.

If you saw Marty right now, you would never believe he is/was a "wild dog." He is being SOOOO good.

We took Marty to Vancouver with us, and we all survived, and had a great time visiting with dogs and dog people. He met some great dogs, but none he could really play with. I thought that when we met a beautiful toy poodle today at the ferry, that finally .... but she didn't want to play with him, even though she was a bit bigger. She was much too much of a lady to stoop to playing with a baby mutt. LOL. The nicest dog was a huge thing.... a Bouvier. He was fairly young, massive, and very gentle. Marty showed no fear, just walked up and said, "Hi. How ya doin'?" I think the answer was, "Just fine, little fellow." Marty wisely did not jump up on him.

We (no puppy yet) went to Puppy Training last night. We're way ahead of schedule in a lot of things, usually, but suddenly he's getting stubborn. Sometimes he's just great, and understands what is expected of him, and usually obeys Come, Fetch, Sit, and is learning Down, Watch Me, Stay. I guess he'll get it, but now he's starting to balk at walking with us, and just stands there. Arghhh!! ("I want to go out with my buddies, not my PARENTS!!")

Marty is here on my lap ehlping me type.

To a friend: I just had my son and his family here for a few days, to visit our new puppy. His name is Marty, and he's a 10 week old Shih Tzu/Yorkie, and is absolutely adorable. I'm a cat person, and Marty is my first dog. I'm not voting yet.... but he's sure fun. He was just what I was looking for. :) I can pretty much get him to spend all his energy playing "fetch", or he has this thing he does with the broom. He chases it, hangs on, dances with it.... it's his favorite toy, if I'm on the other end.

To a friend: I have a new puppy!! His name is Marty (otherwise it would have been "Bob"). He is a 9 1/2 week-old Shih Tzu/Yorkie, and he's mostly black, with a few strategically placed white spots, like his goatee, his vest, a couple of toes, and under his tail (as reported by the vet, who wanted to call him "Skunk") He is already ruling the house.

I've decided he has cat-blood in him, and am training him to use the litter box, much to Allan's dismay. ("He's a DOG!!") It's working, and much better than having those ugly newspapers all over the floor.

He went to have his first grooming yesterday. Of course, I had already bathed him 3 times. He smells like DAWG. Still. But he sure is cute.

Marty went on a looooong walk (for him) along Dallas Road (beach) with us today. He met several other dogs from a distance, as well as many dog lovers. We had a great time. Everyone loved Marty.

We went to Baja Grill afterwards. Charmaine gave Marty water in the car. We left him there, in his cage, with the window open a crack, and Tony checked on him after a bit. He was fine. When we got back to the car, I took him out on the leash, and I think he peed....

He was a good boy. But he did have a little accident: he threw up in his cage on the way home. Poor baby.

The neighborhood sleeps more soundly, knowing he is there to protect us.
