Cross-post from our Austin Small Dog Meet Up group:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*****
Friends:
If you purchased the green 20 oz bag of Innova dog biscuits--the large
size biscuits--for your pupsters, please check the expiration date for a
December 08 expiration date. This is the batch in question.
Someone in the neighborhood who just recently purchased some biscuits at
Bark 'n Purr (in Austin,Texas) found pieces of metal and rocks in these
biscuits when breaking them in half for their dogs. The package was
returned to the store and when they and the store staff looked through
some of the other biscuits in the same package, they found more non-food
items in the biscuits. Bark 'n Purr management contacted the
manufacturers immediately and the product has been pulled off the shelf
and sent to the manufacturer.
I confirmed all of the above with the manager at Bark 'n Purr this
morning and told her I would be sending out a note. She was extremely
helpful.
If you have a package in this batch--the batch that expires in December
08--you can return it to them. As of this morning they have heard
nothing from the manufacturer.
I did ask the store manager if it is likely that this batch of biscuits
would have been distributed only in central Texas. She said it would
likely have gone out all over the country.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is so weird because we were reading something in the Dogster Forum posts about Innova having hairs in the large bites food... Hm... wonder if there are any issues with Evo or small bites?

We switched from Iams to Innova Evo and LOVED it. Then mom couldn't remember we she got and we ended up with Orijen Adult and wouldn't eat it. So then she remember Innova but furgot the EVO part and got lil bites and we are just lukewarm about it. So now she's going to have to reorder. In the meantime, we were eating Science Diet I/D canned but our vet doesn't carry it anymore. WHAT GIVES, mom?!!

We got 3 more ABBEY pupdates I thought we would share. (This is Waverly's GF in TN. She does not have a Dogster page but is gravely ill. We have been forwarding posts from STAFU to her):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ABBEY UPDATE:
Thank you so much for your prayers and concern - I've heard from as far as the UK and Hawaii!! It means a great deal to me.
I am leaving in a few minutes to sit with Abbey until it's time to transport her to the emergency clinic for the rest of the night. She has moved from critical to stable, but her vet will not go as far as to say he is encouraged, only that she's no longer getting worse. It will be a couple of days before we know more, but there are no masses in her chest.
I truly appreciate those of you who have encouraged me, too. I really just kind of went on about my days this weekend, thinking the meds and her age were the culprit for her queasiness. According to Dr. Prior, this auto-immune issue is unheard of; he did say - and was clear to point out it may just be his wishful thinking - that she seemed slightly perkier than this morning.
I do think her condition moving from critical to stable is a half-step of positive - please, as I said before, whether you've ever prayed or not, regardless of who or what you believe, I just ask that you continue saying a prayer on Abbey's behalf. I truly believe He hears them all.
She is so special to me, I am not ready for us to part ways. I cannot wait to hug her!
m
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ONE MORE THOUGHT:
Keep forwarding the original message and/or updates - I don't care if people think I'm a nut for requesting prayers from anyone and everyone. Abbey is absolutely worth any scrutiny of my mental state.

m
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UPDATE
Abbey has Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). If I'm understanding correctly, her body is intent on destroying her red blood cells.
Several things can "launch" this sort of attack. They have pretty much ruled out cancer; it could possibly be some sort of tick disease; or it could be a reaction to a drug. There is a very real possibility we will not know the culprit. There is a possibility that the anesthesia she received last week lowered her resistance enough to cause this to surface.
She is on a very high dose of steroids, antibiotics, fluids, etc. We have taken her to the all-night clinic, where she is receiving a blood transfusion as I type, and will pick her up early tomorrow morning to return her to Murphy Rd. Animal Hospital. She received a couple of units of fake blood earlier today; Dr. Prior had one of his own dogs donate blood, but Abbey's was so messed up he could not determine a "cross-match," I believe was what he called it. He has kept the blood on reserve because chances are very good Abbey will need several. He has also ordered some red blood cells, which will arrive tomorrow from California.
The next 48 hours are critical - if she survives, we have a long road ahead.
Please, I ask for continued prayers and appreciate all that have gone out on her behalf thus far.
Blessings,
Miriam
FLUFFS!
I'm checking in from Grandma and Grandpaw's house. (My videos were taken at their place during Xmas). I can't type much on da Ipawd because my paws are too big to hunt and peck on this keyboard!
Mom overmedicated me again and I look like my sake bomb pic. Mom is kind of a nervous wreck on the plane because the take off and landing parts are a little ruff on my ears and I whine and bark. Also my meds give me dry mouth and I get hot and fussy. There was a baby and another dog, a Yorkie on the first flight, but they were quieter than I.
The second flight we got off in Dallas and Momma bought me McDs. The airline attendants lied and said what a good girl I was and when we deplaned lots of passengers pet me and gave me some love. I did not eat my burger though. On the second flight mom gave me another quarter tablet because I was fussy. Mom scolded me saying, Abigail!" and the lady behind us goes, "Oh good, we're behind Abigail," so mom was embarrassed
and left the bag unzipped so I would not cry. Once I had my water I was fine. It's so hot in that bag. Mom talked to me the whole time. I'm sure we were quite a site! Now I am sleeping. In the car I was so mellow mom kept tapping me on the shoulder to make sure I was still conscious. :o
Grandma is at the airport picking up Molly and Charlie. They are Uncle John's kids and they are coming with their mom. I can't wait! We haven't seen the kids since before Uncle John passed. They are 5 & 4 and look just like their dad! We'll have so much fun and take lots of pics! Check ya later!
On Monday I joined my brother and sister at the Happy Mailman, which is a boarding kennel/ doggy day care facility, which I am calling my "summer camp." Moses and Willie Mae have been since last Thursday, since mom and I were travelling this weekend. Well, now, mom is traveling for work, without me, and I will be spending the night for the first time away from home!
When mom dropped me off, Moses was all wet and Willie's paws were wet. Mom asked about this and the guy said that they were playing in the kiddie pool!
She is glad that I get to be somewhere fun, but I don't get messed up very easily. She likes that there is always somebody back there watching everybody.
There was a really cute tzu in Willie Mae's play group! It's going to be 100 degrees out so she is also glad that the place is air conditioned!
Well, mom just called to check on me. I was evaluated this morning, and mom gave John Michael, the caregiver, my list of "dos" and "don'ts". Some of them include: I don't like getting dirty, or wet, or hot, and I need fresh cool water every day, and sometimes I will not eat, not because I am not hungry, but because I don't want to get my face dirty! BOL! Just call me DIVA!
Before they let you stay, of course, you have to leave your vet records, but you also have to have an assessment to make sure you are friendly enough to hang with a play group. Sure enough, they said I was friendly enough to stay, but they also said I was...um... "different" than Willie and Moses, i.e. they were running around in the pool and dirt outside and I did not care to go outside at all, but wanted to lay on the concrete where it is nice and cool!
This reminds me of Green Acres. Moses is Eddie Albert and I am a sisterly Eva Gabor- Willie can be Wilbur the Pig! BOL!
Almost exactly a year ago on August 8, 2006, mom's brother John passed away suddenly.
Here's some info about him:This was the announcement in the Yale Medicine newsletter.
John K. Joe, M.D., HS ’00, assistant professor of otolaryngology, died suddenly on August 8. He was 36. Joe came to Yale in 1995 as an intern in the Department of Surgery and completed his residency in otolaryngology in 2000. After a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and an assistant professorship at the Medical University of South Carolina, Joe returned to Yale in 2003 to join the faculty of the Section of Otolaryngology in the Department of Surgery. He rapidly established himself as a premier head and neck surgeon and developed one of the largest head and neck surgical oncology practices on the East Coast. He specialized in treating patients with advanced and complex cancers and offered the highest level of technical and compassionate care.
***********************************************************
Much more than any of his professional accomplishments and accolades, he was known for definitely leaving a heart print on every person that he met. He was a truly wonderful and compassionate, fun, dynamic, fun-loving human being who brought so much life to every moment.
This was an interview with him a couple of months before he died. It was about his love of surgery, and work life balance:
May 2006 Yale Medicine Interview
This is the article about the free cancer screening in his memory.
Free Cancer Screening at Yale Announcement
Read the first couple of sentences about this lecture that he did Encoding Lecture- "Just Like Flossing"
We don't understand the medical topic discussed, but it says that he got a "rousing ovation to a packed crowd"- that was typical John.
Mom is going home for her mom's birthday and for his memorial.
We hope that his memory will live on for all of the good work that he did and for the wonderful father, brother, and son that he was. He is survived by a daughter, Molly, 4 and son Charlie, 3.
Dear Diary,
Last week lots of pups in STAFU got hit with anonymous watermelon rosettes. My brother started a thread to try and find the culprit. Well, today the CULPRIT turned herself in... It was none other than my friend from Orange County, Sophie Tzu!!!
Everything was fine and DANDY until the little jailbird started to SING! NOW I am BUSTED for being an accomplice... Unfortunately, the puparazzi has already gotten ahold of this story, and here it is:
I have just been tagged by my friends, Raja Babu, Abigail, Mato and Buzzy to play the "TAG" game:
Here are the rules:
Each player starts with seven random facts about themselves. Dogs who are tagged, need to post in their Diary the rules & their 7 pawsome facts. Then choose 7 dogs to tag and list their names. Don’t forget to bark them a pmail that they have been tagged and to read your Diary!!! Here are my PAWESOME FACTS:
1. I am a rescue pup from Austin, TX. Shameless plug: www.weerescue.com. I was found at Townlake Animal Shelter and wasn't claimed, so the rescue group picked me up.
2. My name was originally Abigail, just like Moses was already Moses. Mom just added the exclamation point for emphasis because I'm a WHOLE LOTTA ABIGAIL!! Also, my middle name is Graciella. Abigail! Graciella Joe.
3. My toe pads alternate between pink and black.
4. I LOVE fresh water- sometimes I will stand by the sink and demand it.
5. Mom doesn't dress me up so much anymore. I wear a little bling in the form of a purple swarovski collar. Willie Mae wears my pearl necklace because my neck's too fat.
6. When I don't get what I want, I cry like a human baby!
7. I love pasta, but without the red sauce. I especially love it when mom hand feeds it to me!
Thanks to Raj, Abigail, Mato and Buzzy for tagging me.
I tagged: Gracie, Molly, Schitzo, Tater, Toby, Murphy, and Hollywood. Sorry if there are any repeats!!!
XOXO, Abigail!
I was rescued by an Austin small dog rescue group that my mom joined when her BF was deployed to Iraq. Unfortunately, he never made it back, (an IED took him in October 2003) so she threw all of her time and energy into that rescue group. I was the second foster dog that my mom took in. (See my brother Moses' photos to see her first foster, Mango).
Mom originally wanted Mango instead of me.
Mango was matted, poor and pitiful. He had a sad little look in his eyes. His head of hair was so matted that by the time they cut his Diana Ross style down his head was half of its previous size. You could tell that he was not used to being up on furniture or being petted... but NOT me!
Soon after Mango came to their home, I was brought to my mom's house as a foster. My hair was a mess, but I had a sense of entitlement from the very start. If I wanted something, I would bark very indignantly and let you know it. My tail was curled up as a strutted my stuff around. I was born a diva, even though I ended up in the rescue group, because I was told I was a beauty and believed it 100 percent! I was so spoiled, mom would just roll her eyes at me when I would look up at her and bark. There were so many other dogs that never had the attention that I had. Plus there were two ladies who were already fighting over me.
One day Mango was adopted. Mom was so sad, the ladies at the rescue had to do a three-way call just to stop her from crying. She grudgingly admitted that I was more her style, and boy was she ever right. They told mom they were hoping that she would say that, and I have been the head of this pack ever since!
