Sweet little delilah woke up one morning to find a big juicy strawberry rhubarb pie on the counter. She never eats human food, or takes things off the counter, but apparently she has a strawberry rhubarb pie fetish that we had no idea about. She dragged it off the way back of the counter and the glass pie plate shattered into a thousand pieces. When mommy came down she saw shards of glass on the floor (but not enough to recreate a full pie plate) and no pie. There sat delhi happy as a clam and wagging away. Mommy flips out and rushes delilah to Cornell Vet Hospital, once there x-rays are taken and indeed one can see (underneath a huge amount of pie) about a half cup of glass. We decided on emergency surgery since the glass was all contained and had many large very jagged and sharp pieces. Later we got to see all the glass they got out of her stomach - we were so happy that we opted for surgery as several pieces were very long and sharp. They told us that it's true - labs will eat everything, but this is the first lab that ate the pie and the pie plate!
Boy did we learn out lesson - never again will we leave ANYTHING out on our counter. Delilah is the beloved sun to which our lives revolve around, she brings us so much joy and love.
Our eternal respect and gratefulness goes out to the wonderful Doctors, Nurses, Surgeons and Students at the Cornell Vet Hospital. They could not have been more caring, experienced, or wonderful to us.

We are sure that they saved our beloved brown dogs life.

So this is my new peeve. when the ups man comes to our house I really throw a fit. I bark, I growl, I show my teeth. The whole nine. The reason.........pressure. UPS' slogan "what can brown do for you" seems to put more pressure on me. I mean i'm brown, just look at me! My personal slogan is "what can you do for brown"! So i'm worried that they're giving my mom bad ideas with their shiny brown truck and slogan, I mean how can I compete?

Needless to say the ups driver now leaves out packages outside the house on the steps.

Don't mess with brown!

Humans just don't realize how important it us for us pups to check out "Pee-Mail". Whenever i'm at the dogpark, or out for a walk, I like to check in with my buddies and see what new in my Pee-Mail. With one sniff I can get a world of information about my friends...how they are feeling that day, what they had for breakfast, what kind of mood they're in, etc. Pretty efficent eh? My mom thinks i'm just pulling on the leash, craning my neck for one more sniff just to annoy her and stretch out my time at the park. I want to howl "Mom, Max was here this morning and apparently his mom is making peanut butter cookies with tons of crumbs falling on the floor!" But to no avail...it's back to the car, one more half sniffed Pee-Mail....

I'm just a brown dog. My parents alway remind me of that when I've been bad. "Delilah, who do you think you are, you're just a little brown dog." I think this is a good thing though. Sure everyone knows the much loved black lab. But I say that times they are a changing, BROWN is the new black! My chocolately deliciousness goes with many things. Brown can be beautiful too!

Most humans just don't "get it". They see repeating tasks over and over again as "dull". I am a Buddhist so therefore I'm really into the Zen of fetching. Fetching is my meditation. When I meet new dogs at the dog park that just want to sniff my butt or roll in dirt, I tell them what would really help clear their mind of all these hyper-social behaviors is a good tennis ball. Out there... it's just me and the ball. That's all I care about, there is no distance between the ball and me. We are one. I am the ball. I see the ball. Be the ball.

next time...."the zen of begging"....followed by.. "the zen of ripping your toys apart"....
