Star has to be put down on 06/12/12 because of something that wasted her away within a month. Our vet didn't know the reason but it was clear that it was time. It was so shockingly fast. She was working up until close to the end.

She will always be remembered by me and I hope this Diary has been a help to others.

When it gets warmer outside I will start retraining Icy. I doubt he'll ever be an Assistance Dog again, I am hoping I won't need him, but I want to be able to walk him like a regular pet. I may continue his Diary on his page. I still want to get him and I in as a unit to do Therapy Dog work. I want to be sure his fear of other dogs is under control enough that we can do this.

I am heart broken right now and have no plans at the moment for another dog. Icy seems alright with being alone and we grieve together.

A 4 hour cafe visit with my two good friends. Star was amazing and we got several surprised comments because people didn't know she was in the room.

It was a wonderful day and good training for my girl! She was definitely ready for it. Ignored all the food yet centered all her attention on me. Hardly any treat rewards.

Star's second car ride and she settled on the floor of the car without a thought for the seats. Now that she knows I'm not going to drop her off and leave her somewhere, she was quite good in the car.

I will see if I can load my new video. Star helps me navigate through lots of tables and chairs to the exit.

Lone Star was wonderful today working as my Mobility Assistance Dog at my son's primary school. We did a talk about Working Dogs with his class and were invited back for a presentation on Hanukkah to the kids.

She was a champion! She got a "Golden Scroll" for being such a good learner. I'll scan it later. My husband and I got "Golden Scrolls" too for our talk.

She was very smooth in the walk. My husband took some video. Can't wait to play it back. She lay under my legs at the school and allowed strokes when the kids wanted. At one point my son accidently stood on her tail and the teacher looked worried but Star ignored him.

To be fair she was a little worried till we got into the classroom. They had to get the kids ready and I was standing for a few minutes with my legs shaking. My husband went off to find me a chair and Star whined till I was seated.

We went up hill on the way home. I never dared try that with Icy. Star was very smooth and paced herself with me. She noticed things for me and stopped me from walking into a cross walk when a car had not stopped yet.

Very good day. My son's teacher even said she saw a change since the last time she saw Star for the Parent Night. :)

I saw film of someone else's dog they are training and she had this pointer stick that clicks to point to things till the dog knows the name of what she's after. I am going to get one of those. Star is a workaholic and is soaking up everything I can teach her like a sponge. That's why I think adding the Therapy Dog work to this would be good for her. Application about ready to go in the mail.

Something decidedly odd. Star has taken it upon herself to wake me in the morning when I am about to burst with holding pee. I know its kinda a gross thing to share but I wear a pad in case of accidental trickles. This last week she'll put her muzzle in my hand and I get up and walk to the toilet just fine. Then she will be happy to lie back down and go to sleep without clamoring to be let out of have food. She's amazing.

We got our application to be a Therapy Dog unit. I'm excited about this and think I can do it along with her other training. I will teach her the command "friend" and she will know she can give attention to someone other than me. :)

Star is feeling much better and is back on her food properly. She looks bright enough. I'm hoping it was something she ate that disagreed with her. Either way I plan to work her lightly (as if I ever get out that much) and see how she is.

Even if she turns out to have a problem with fits I am hoping we can work as a Therapy Dog unit. I have asked for an application. She could use some of her training and it would be laid back. http://www.petsastherapy.org/ Even if I can work her (and I'm starting to feel I can) we might do this on the side.

So I'm starting to hope. We'll see how this week goes.

Star had a fit today on and off for 20 minutes from 8:20am-8:40am. Mild shaking of her head and down her back. Didn't want to run and hide this time. I pet her through it.

So that's it for her Assistance Dog career. I'll keep making my log for the next time we see the vet. But as long as its hot hindering her life, I'll keep her off medication as long as possible. My Epileptic girl Ookie didn't last 6 months on the meds. It is hard on the body.

So that's it for her Assistance Dog training. I'm much better in my body now and I still look forward to taking her for regular walks, I just won't be able to take her into buildings. It's a blow but her health is my main concern.

So this might be the last entry in this diary. I may add tid bits from other things I might train both dogs to do.

Thank you for reading.

Of all the things I nearly had a panic attack two nights ago while playing with Jason. He was screaming and giggling and then he had me down and I had a PTSD moment. Very bad as I had been mock calling for help before, Dave didn't come as he thought it was part of the game. The two dogs are used to these games by now and were calm but when I started really panicking one of them came and touched my foot, I think it was Star (that's part of her job). When I got up Icy was there and I gave him hugs. I tried to laugh it off with my son but it scared me real bad. I've never had anything like that happen before.

Just got back from the vet. My dog Star is fine. She's not eating like I expected because its a breed thing. She's not happy with the hard food so he says soft is more natural. She chews bones so he wasn't worried. As for the fit she had, he says some dogs have them. The medication (as I have experience) can be harder on the dogs body than the occasional fit. As long as it doesn't stop them enjoying life. For now I am to keep a log of when I see it happening so they know how frequently it happens.

She was fantastic in her capacity as a Mobility Assistance Dog in Training. I wish I had film of her. She was so relaxed and on the job. I broke one of their chairs and she stood and supported me till help could arrive. She didn't solicit attention even from the vet. There were lots of excited dogs and one that growled at her. She just ignored them. She also paused before a step down in the office on a few occasions to show me it was there. She was very alert looking for cars too. I'm really proud of her.

The vet gave her vitamins and we're going back next Thursday for some jags. Got the PDSA form and I filled it out. Maybe tomorrow we can drop it in.

As this might be a one time only fit the vet said she was still able to work with me. :)

I took Lone Star down to my son's primary school today for the first time this term. It was her first time. We were to meet with his teacher after all the kids had gone.

She was spot on in everything despite walking a new path and having family with us. We saw dogs, kids in buggies, strollers, toddlers, older kids, teens, bikes, scooters, cars and many more things.

She lay quiet during the meeting and we spent some time at the playground afterwards. Star showed a side I didn't expect in her as she was worried about my son if he got to far ahead of us adults. She was great in the playground with all the kids running around. Since I was safe on a bench she spent the time watching my son.

On the way home I was tired and needed frequent rests. She was understanding. She learned my "stand" command (which means to stand and let me use the dog as a balance to get up). She also finally "released" peed. I'm sure she'll know the command now that she did it and I told her what it was.

She was very watchful of everything and even kept trying to veer me to one side of the side walk. When my husband mentioned it I told him I thought it was because she wanted to smell the fence. He told me that actually I was placing my crutch to close to the curb and he was sure I would eventually end up in the gutter. After that I trusted her judgement and we were fine.

My son's teacher has invited us to come in and talk about working dogs to the class. I'm in a lot of pain but it was worth it.

Lone Star was out on the beat with me today. We walked around a packed and busy parking lot for practice. She was so good that I got a compliment from someone who trains Hearing Dogs.

She was totally alert to our surroundings. She even steadied me when I had a stumble when looking both ways on the busy road.

I took Lone Star out yesterday for a short walk around the super market right near us. I left without thinking to put by back pack on. Big mistake! I didn't fall (my first fall with Icy was the one time I didn't bring "my ton of bricks") but only because we stopped frequently and I leaned against street light poles. I was fine going into the walk. We walked through a parking lot with lots going on and cars coming and going and people. She was excellent. Looking both ways and not giving undue attention to our surroundings. I was walking and I couldn't understand why I was having problems standing straight. By the time we got out of the parking lot and on our way home around it (next to a fairly busy road) I was having real problems. She was so good at telling that I was not well. She walked slowly and I let her sniff around to places we stopped. She was on edge. By the time we got home I was walking perpendicular. I sat down on the bottom stair and caught my breath and then made it upstairs to my armchair. By the time we were to leave to go to my son's Taikwondo I was able to walk down stairs to the door without a problem. My husband always takes me in my wheel chair as it's to far for me to walk yet. Due to balance and stamina.

Last night I got up and walked to the toilet myself at the Taikwondo place. Hey, I was proud! I held onto the walls but did it on my own.

I am sore today like I was beaten badly yesterday but most of it is centred around my right shoulder where I was walking with the crutch. What does that tell you about walking with an assistance dog vs crutches??

Poor Star is really mopy today. Even my MIL (who doesn't like Lone Star) has noticed and she remarked that maybe she ate something that didn't agree with her. I had to remind her of what happened yesterday and that I think Star is reacting to that and me being in pain. That woman! She just shrugged it off. She was THERE when I came home!!

Anyway, Star is getting a lot of pets today. Next time I will go out WITH my backpack. I told her to remind me.

She's learning fast and today I didn't need to hold her lead during the meeting. She knew that a dropped lead meant to stay put. She slept through most of the meeting. Food on the table and not one interested look. Fantastic dog.

I still think Icy must have strapped a cheat sheet to her paw!

We'll both gradually build our stamina up. Today I wanted to keep walking but to walk around my normal exercise/training rout I would have to go through the area where Icy and I were attacked. I'm not psychology ready for it. So I have to map out somewhere else to start walking around.

Successful trip with Lone Star. I would say it was more promising than Icy's first trip out.

Lovely trip to the garden and back. We passed lots of people and cars, dogs barking, dogs walking, hoses running water, someone unloading a big truck. We did get stopped a few times for people to meet the "husky". Even when I was sitting on the bench in the garden we had people passing and pointing at Star. The cat treats worked very well. :) She went nuts at the sight of the treats. She also carried her own water, bowls and treats in her pack. She was really very good. My husband has even remarked on how satisfied she looked later. I was told that Icy just went to sleep when we were out but he did tell her off when we got home. LOL

I think Icy will have one more outing on Augst 3rd. Our photo that was taken for charity will be in a gallery opening that night. I think Icy HAS to be there and I don't think Star will be up to riding the bus yet. I'm kind of excited. I'll probably muzzle him till we get there. I can't wait to see the photo!

Lone Star has been over the moon with her new status and Icy seems pleased she's going to be working. I don't know how he will be when she and I go out together but in the house he is very gracious and excepting. She wears his old vest and it fits her a lot better than it ever did him! His coat will always be his.

I will post photos when I have them. I'm excited to start working with her. But we'll be working in the house first to get her used to the equipment and her role. I hope to take her out by the end of July.

Icy and I did manage to get our photo taken yesterday by the professional photographer for charity. It rained so hopefully we won't have to reshoot. Icy was such a ham! Seriously, focused on posing. Would get up and literally pose! I was so jealous! Dodges my camera but the minute someone else takes a camera out....BAM. Mr Ham!

Icy is edgy about other dogs again. Mostly telling them to go away. No pulling or aggression. He had to have his neg muzzle on to get to the garden where we met the photographer. On the way home a man with a boxer came out of a doorway. He had his muzzle on but started seeing red. I used the noise I use in the house when someone is bad and that got his attention. I kept walking and making that noise and saying no and after maybe 4 times of it he turned on walked with me on our way. This was a break-through for us. So I have hopes to put this behind us. But I'm not surprised that the dog is worried! He just needs to relearn that most dogs are not interested in us.

He's very happy with the fit and seems to be less hot wearing it. I made sure and made it big for him so I think he gets more air-flow going through it.

Went out on Monday with Icy. We had a great walk and meeting. Everyone thinks Icy acted well and they were calling him a hero. I think he is too.

I think they have been talking. My MIL was in town and someone came up to her that had seen it happen. Wanted to know if we were alright. He said that he thought that the aggressive dog was a goner when Icy opened his big mouth. But he didn't attack or even growl. He was also amazed at how easily Icy was controlled by my MIL and then me. My MIL talked some more. The more people that have a good opinion of what happened the better. My MIL says that the Dog Warden would have been here with the police the day after if they thought Icy had been in the wrong. So I think we're good. Maybe that dog and man are known to be trouble makers....

I was told yesterday that it is a credit to my training that Icy calmed down for my MIL till I could get to him. He has also walked fine for an elderly gentleman that I used to know.

We had an interesting walk yesterday. We were about to be attacked by a dog when Icy broke free from me and faced it off. Scared it literally shittless and he herded it away from us by ROARING. I was out with my MIL who isn't all that steady and in her 70s.

I lost my balance and fell on the cobble stones and she went after Icy (who didn't go more than a few paces from me). A man out with the aggressive dog knocked her over and grabbed Icy's harness. He got pulled around in a circle until he gave him over to my MIL who was closer. He sat on my MIL and kept barking. I crawled across the cobbles to get to them. He calmed down instantly when I got there. My MIL stood up and I told Icy to "stand" and used the harness and him to get back to my feet. The crowd that had gathered seemed shocked that he calmed down instantly and helped me up. I told them that was what I had trained him for. Though I have only had one other fall while being out. The idiots with the dog staid to watch.

I put Icy's neg muzzle on and we walked off. There were a few other dogs in the area including two seeing eye dogs and he ignored them. A few people tried to help us get up but most gawked. Icy didn't touch the other dog or any person involved. He just scared the dog and the owner shittless (which was probably needed). I could have had a much worse fall if the dog had gotten to us. As it is my MIL and I feel kinda battered but no damage.

Scary. I was worried WE would be reported. But the three of us had been to my son's school for a meeting, then went to a supermarket and ate at the cafe. We had even stopped and sat on a bench and waited to my MIL to come out of a shop. It was unexpected and most of the people thought it was Icy who was the aggressor.

A lady came up to me to ask if the other dog had tried to attack and then told me to calm down and Icy was doing his job. He has been moping since we got home. Poor lad. I can't tell him he did good when he shouldn't have broken away from me. But if he did not, I don't know what would have happened.

Everyone seems to agree Icy acted the Hero. I'm proud of him.

Icy is devoted. All my rescues have been close to me but Icy is like an extension of me. We were close before the training but now we're really close. Its wonderful. I think from a trainers point of view the most amazing thing about it is that he watches over me but he lets me lead. That is so rare especially for the breed. Star and I are close too but not like Icy. I always thought Cora was my "soul dog" but Icy has become that. Cora had so many issues and I think she and I worked through them. That's what I have had with all my rescues. But Icy gave up trying to do his own thing and really gave himself to me to mould. I have no experience with service dogs but if they all give themselves like this than I am amazed trainers can give them up to someone else in the end. I would be so worried about him being treated right. And what if they didn't bond like this? I mean when I went into the hospital I had spent a year dog aggression training Icy. I've never heard of another dog, let alone a service dog, that has worked through that stuff for the good of the owner so fast. Years of work in the space of one year. I just think he's amazing. We're his 5th home.....

I've actually started to think that he's the result of karma. Since I gave myself for so many souls in need (cats and dogs). He's giving back. I just leaned back and his eyes opened on to me. He knows what signs I make when I am going to start moving or getting up. *shakes head* I don't know.

I read something the other day like "If you save a soul you are then responsible for that soul." It made sense to me. I wonder if Icy saved my soul?

‎"The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog... He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world...When all other friends desert, he remains."

A new photo of Icy working.

This was our family trip out to TESCO Supermarket today. It was a great trip out. My 5 year old son picked it chocolate Easter Eggs and then Icy and I sat in the cafe upstairs while while my husband did the rest of the shopping with the family. A lot of compliments for the big boy and no negatives. His second time in TESCO.

I need to buy the big boy another working reflective vest. His coat is so thick right now that the one he has been wearing doesn't fit any more! I know someone who can custom make him a vest. I just bought a new big girl collar for Star from this seller and I need to get in touch. I can't find any vests thin enough not to suffocate him that are for his size.

It was very busy today and had a lot of signs and he never looked at anything but his family. He was wonderful.

Icy was fab like usual and just went to sleep. Tomorrow there is an Easter thing at my son's school and I'm going to walk in with him. He'll wear his new "bondage" wire model muzzle so people feel safe. *rolls eyes* I bought this one for him in the hopes that he will be able to breathe better through it. He doesn't breathe well through his nose (poor dear). I'm keeping his cloth muzzle for other training but at the school I think it would be nice for him to breathe. *lol* I can't wait to see my son's show. So he, my mother-in-law and I walked to son's parents night at dusk and it was very dark when we left. So he got some night experience. He was so brilliant that even with my balance being bad right now, he compensated. There is quite a hill down to the school and we had no problems. :)

He was great at the school and all Jason's teachers spent some time stroking him.

I have an infected big toe that keeps breaking open. It has limited my activity though I haven't posted on here in awhile because it has been to icy and slippery for me to even think of walking outdoors.

This last fortnight I keep falling (I'm assuming because of the antibiotic that I'm taking for my big toe; or it could be just that my balance is buggered due to the toe) and today I fell right in front of the bedroom on a standing fan we have. Nothing hurt but my pride and a few bruises.

My husband Dave was alseep and our 5 year old son came running up to me to see if I needed him. The first person to come up to me was Star (Icy was at my head and she came to my face) and when I said "go get Dave" she left with my son. I found out after our son woke Dave up that he awoke to Star sitting on his chest looking into his eyes. I haven't yet worked out how to teach the dogs to go get Dave (or I was going for "help" but didn't say that word today) and Star worked it out. As she is head of my nursing (apart from the humans) when I am in the house, she took on the responsibly. I don't think Icy would leave me in that situation outside but it could be useful for Star to know in the house.

Had a very frigid day out at Stirling Mills Outlet Mall last weekend. Dave got the one pair of shoes big enough for him and they were only £15. Adidas ones with super comfy souls too. We had a muffin at a cafe. Icy came with us into the Nike shop, Adidas, a toilet, that cafe and a long bus ride. In between it was like an outside mall. He was marvellous. Jason was not. It was cold and he wanted to go home. So I guess it was good in that we got the shoes, I got some exercise, and Icy got some experience.

My fears of him not looking professional enough seem to be ungrounded. Once again, no one took one side look at the big guy from any staff. A lot of comments on him but all good. It was a new place, so he was watching everything but no problem attention. He must have looked proper for those big name stores to have let us in. We had to talk to the staff at both shoe stores to find out if they had Dave's size (it's like a 15 US). Not one look or manager walk by.

It might well be my last time out on my two legs for this winter. Though we are going to try to get out our usual Monday meeting tomorrow morning. If it's not to icy or there is no snow. Looks promising today....

On the way home from the doctor yesterday, Dave and Jason were talking. Icy is a "helper dog" because he can go into shops and things. They decided Star was a "hinderence dog" as she's Icy's opposite. :)

We went out in the blowing rain. We had a nice little meeting with the local authority about Jason's school. Dave, I and another parent were all that showed up. Just as well we went! We walked the whole way home without me needing to sit.

And...da Da DA...

Dave, Jason, Icy and I walked through TESCO supermarket without one bad look or problem. That's with trollies (carts) and Christmas lighting and stuff. He even walked past bones and dog treats without a look.

I was really proud of both of us. I didn't have any of the vertigo I was having with riots of colour like supermarkets of tv advertisements, and he was totally on the ball. Sat when we had to wait. Moved out of the isle with me when someone needed past. Then sat. He did look around to orient himself but I could see it was just that. No undue interest. He was on the job. I wouldn't hesitate to take him in again. I have been waiting till we were a better partnership before being ballsy enough to walk into a supermarket like I owned it. I might try and shop for something small next time. Something I can fit in my back pack for the way home.

We had a nice walk home but the wind played havoc with my balance.

Had a great day out on the bus with Icy. 1 hour each way due to traffic. By the ride home he knew to move his bum out of the way when people came by. He was his usual great self at the meeting and one older gentlemen (in his 80s I think) took him out for an impromptu walk. I was a little worried, though I knew he would be returned. But he was excellent and didn't pull at all. The man was all paise and he seemed to know dogs. So it was good in the long run but I don't think I will let it happen again. MY ICY!!!

We saw 5 or 6 dogs and he just wooo wooed at them when his muzzle was on and did a little barking one time without it. But no lunging or getting into his long horrid barking. It was very low key and he let me lead him by them or hold his mouth. I was very pleased. Little steps, eh?

I did some drawings of how Icy helps me for my 5 year old son's class. They teacher showed them to the kids and they talked about them. The class was very favourable and his teacher was all praise. As a result of the drawings, I mostly answered questions about his fur and things about him as a dog rather than his job. I didn't expect that at all! It was cute!!

Icy was perfectly at ease in front of about 15-20 students. He just wanted his muzzle off! There was also an older kid with autism (I think) who was lead in and gave Icy a good massage. All the kids gave Icy pats, kisses and hugs.

Some of the older kids that saw him in the hall thought Icy was a polar bear!

When we left, we went to the playground (it has wood chips on the ground) and Icy had many a good roll and pushed his snout into the muck trying to get the muzzle off. He seemed to have a good time, and I was sitting down, so I let him get on with it. It was funny!

He was totally relaxed and because he knew the path to the school, he even reminded me of the opening in the wall to the school. I had walked right past it! There were a lot of leaves on the ground and I slipped three times but Icy was there to be my solid support.

Icy and I went to our normal Monday group. It ends next week so I'll have to find something else for us to do on Mondays. He knows his days of the week! There was a physio there today and she saw that I have some movement in my drop foot. This is really good news and means I'm doing well working with my body. She had a bed to check me out on and Icy stood up (without me telling him or being on the lead) to give me the handle on his back to help me up. He also go up and moved over a few inches when I asked him to. She also saw us walking and on the stairs.

I've been nervous about showing him to doctors and physios in case they think I'm trying to take the easy way out or something. I know when she walked in she thought maybe I was using him just as emotional support. And then she saw him actually working. It was nice. I think there is a niche here for dogs that are not seeing eye dogs or hearing dogs but mobility dogs.

He was so good today. We had a 45 minute bus ride, then we had a two hour meeting and a car ride home, then a walk. He heard sirens, children, push chairs, motorcycles, cars, buses, bikes, and other dogs. You name it and this dog is great. He's to be helping me out.

Here's a new photo from yesterday October 14th. http://files.dogster.com/pix/dogs/05/1058205/1058205_1318682383.jpg

Icy in his reflective vest with his mobility harness on. I got a thin vest so it wouldn't be so hot and bothersome to him. We get a lot of great comments from professionals as well as bistandards and I haven't had the problem of people coming up to pet him. My mobility is improving the the point where I no longer have the back pain.

Star had a great time while we were out with 4 different people to get attention from, she didn't howl once!

I was officially released from the physio/occupational therapy departments yesterday. I am doing so well that my doctor has left a slot open for me if I need to see him but otherwise I'm to continue my own thing.

My 5 year old's school has oked Icy to come in with me in his service capacity. So I have the freedom to go as I please with my big white boy. We'll try it next week. So pleased! This means so much more freedom for me and I can teach the kids a bit about service dogs. Icy will wear his muzzle to start with.

The school has "No Dogs" signs posted around so I asked permission. They thought it was a great chance to show how to relate to a service dog.

They usually don't let you take photos but maybe they can take one at teacher night on Tuesday. It's nice to be at such progressive school. and I have 6 years with them :) I'm hoping in less time than that he will be a regular dog and I'll be walking both my honeys. *fingers crossed*

I fell on Wednesday when out with Icy on my own. I was stupid and over extended how far I could go and had a hard time getting home. Dave and Jason helped but it was Icy that got me through. We were on a incline and I turned around to see what Icy was whining about. It was a dog coming up behind us on a lead. Anyway, a lot of people wanted to help but I told them I had to learn to do it on my own. So eventually I got on my knees and told Icy "up". He stood like a rock and I used my crutch and his harness to get up. Now this is something I had been meaning to practice with him but hadn't yet. He's so amazing with everything but other dogs. So I guess from now till he stops loosing his top when he sees another dog near us, he'll wear his hated muzzle. I figure I can take it off in buildings. He'll learn. It's all instinct. Dave couldn't believe it. He wondered how we could walk at all. Its like a haze clouds his brain. I'll give it to Dave though, he trusts me to keep at it. Anne for once is all behind me.

The local Dog Warden stopped his van to speak to us personally. He was nice but police officerish. This was before the incident in the park. Anyway, I'm sure he'd heard about a tall woman with a big white husky service dog. He wanted to know the breed and who I was training with. At least now I know that you can train your own dog legally. Wanted to know his age. He said maybe he'd check up on our progress. Like I said, nice. There can't be any complaints about us. He's been excellent apart from barking at a few dogs.

I still stand by my decision. If it had been Star out with me, I would have worried I would hurt her by using her to stand up with. Icy is all muscle and a big guy. He just shrugged it off. We had a few more practices with it on the way home as I had to rest a lot.

I'm taking Icy to our usual Monday meeting.

Dave thought he looked like a gay clubber without his mobility harness on. It worked though. People stayed their distance and said how nice a dog is without touching him.

Believe it or not; Icy noticed a car I hadn't seen coming toward us on a street. Slow but it was coming. It was him constantly looking in that direction that twigged me to it. :)

I had a great time out with my big pal Icy. We walked to the bus stop and rode the bus to the Health Centre and back and an elevator up and down. He rode both like a pro. We even walked by a cafe in the Health Crentre and he didn't even look at the tables or food. Then we waited in the ward for a little over an hour. Icy drank from a cup and had a dog treat.

He was itching to leave by the time we left but he was very good and continued to pace himself with me. He lay the whole time or sat between my legs and watched people. It was raining buckets. It's not a day I could have gone on my own; the distance and the wettness. I wasn't jittery even when I found we were there on the wrong day for the appointment!! He got lots of pets and praise from strangers. In general they kept their distance. Oh I used an ATM too while he sat. At least now I know I can do it. Everyone was very accomidating.

I talked on the phone with Star. She did a lot of talking! Dave said she was a little calmer afterward. She still howled the whole time. Just walked around complaining. *lol*

Icy got his proper Mobility Harness. It's like horse tack. It's got thick wool on the chest strap and under the "saddle" bit in the middle. It's stamped "Service Dog" in the leather. The handle is really sturdy, so if I need support I can use it. It heavy but lighter than what Icy had been carrying in his pack so he wasn't bothered. He knew when he saw the box that it was for him. Mom got an extention to the main handle in case he was lower than I thought, which he isn't. But its good because if i needed to, I could use the gear on another shorter dog. We also got a had leather handle that clips on to the many clips on the harness, for Jason to use.

Last night he stood "ready" for a half hour while I walked around him and took photos. He knows that when his gear is on that he is to be still. I think the first thing I am going to teach him is how to help me up. I think I will lie down on the floor (near a table or couch for help) and then say "Help Up". I want him to lie next to me with the handle or stand and let me use him for my left hand and the table for my right to get up. I think that if we practice enough that if I have a fall outside he will know what to do.

Thursday is out "taking the dogs out day" so we'll try it later today. We'll see how Star preforms for Dave because she might need a Halti with her.

Hopefull photos of video to follow.

My husband Dave and I took the dogs to the memorial garden. I walked Icy and he walked Star. There were lots of people and cars about. Even some loading into stores. Icy was great and we worked on "ignore", "working" & "release". It was great practice with Star yapping behind him. He's the King of Cool. Not one woof out of him and very focused.

We even had to get off the sidewalk twice for buggies and an old lady in one of the motor things. They both sat very well. Dave gave no commands but Star did everything I said. I was pleased. And with Icy and I in the lead it puts her in her place more. They both got a workout. Star is carrying 1 kg of weight in her pack and Icy has 3 kg. Icy's new harness is on its way from the States. It will make my life easier as my back is sore! But it was very good.

We will take them out again on Friday. I had planned on taking Icy to TESCO on Thursday but we are not up to that yet. We'll keep with this Monday meeting, Wednesday and Friday out with Dave and Star for awhile I think. I am also spending more time downstairs. I want to always be down here when Jason comes home from school. It doesn't sound like much but its a lot of work for me. :)

This is short and to the side (don't know how to right it) but you can see how Icy is with me on the stairs. At home he and Star are trained to heel me, but when we are out and I have my new mobility harness, he needs to walk next to me. I thought I would have to teach him this but he is doing it on his own (and without the harness). I am very proud of him. He's so good during the meetings too. That's two that he has attended with me.

Star was pretty settled. Howled a bit, ate her kong. Sounds fine. Very attentive when I got home. No jealousy. I think she's liking the time to herself (provided a human is there).

Amazing time out with Icy working. We went on our own and he was brilliant. Got in to the spiral staircase and he knew just what to do. I thought I'd have to train him to stay at my side on stairs (in case I need support). He and Star are trained to heel me on the stairs. But he staid next to me on his own without being told. One stair at a time. The lady running my group was doubmfounded (sp). He was great in the group too and just lay at my feet.

This group is for chronic pain suffers and people with mobility problems. BTW Didn't want you to think I was in AA or something!

I had water with me and I think next week I'll take a bowl with me. I wish you could have seen him. A real champ! He was a bit distracted when we first walked out but fell into line. People had coffee on a low table and he lay with his back to it. No sniffing people either. It was a new streat and new place so I let him have a sniff as we went. Next week he'll know where we're going and what is expected. At break time, we walked together around and he got to sniff things.

Next week Lynn said she would video us coming down the stairs for all to see. :)

Star howled but was fine. She seemed settled when we got home. They ran around the back to get some energy out. But she doesn't seem to be holding a grudge. All in, a good day. :)

This is Icy and I walking together with Dave sitting with Star during it. Despite the gravel and the whining Star, I thought Icy was great. Dave says he's like a "prancing pony or show horse" when we're walking. Take into account that I am 6'' tall and you'll get an idea of Icy's size. He's like a brick wall. Very comforting.

That's why I thought it best to stick with walking Icy. We'll get used to each other and I don't have to worry about him taking a little of my weight. Star is leaner and though a big dog, she's young and doesn't have the steadiness. She let Icy lead (he sent marked everything) and there were no problems. So it might help things in the house too if she is taking his lead outside.

Only our second time out and Star's first time. 17/07/11

My balance is a lot better with my new leg splint so I have started today walking the dogs around our living room with their packs on. Star has 1 kg of weight (spread between sides) in her's to start and Icy had 3 kg. They were both happy and very attentive. They both waited on my steps without being told and sat when I stopped. This was with the dog I wasn't walking loose as a diversion. I was very happy with Star as she was so excited to go first! I expected what I got from Icy as he's had years of my training.

I was going to make another slide show but I can't work out how right now. So there are the photos. I plan to do five minutes everyday each with them and then take them out back and finally go out with Dave. Afterward I did the dishes and the three of us went shopping in Lidel and then walked around it to the house.

I feel tired and sore but not overly so. I hope to keep this up everyday.

I was originally going to train Star (Mal/Sib rescue) because she seemed more caring and receptive to my needs. Then my physio made it clear I wouldn't need a dog out of the house. So now I've been lightly training both to help me in the house. Icy is good at being told to get things or when I fell and needed help he knew to howl and bark. Star is good at following my around at heel and she takes me to the bathroom and back and waits till I sit down before she leaves. She always returns to check on me. Icy is about 4 (rescue Mal we've had for 2 years) and Star is only just 2 (we've had her for about a year).

Apart from a few falls I think I will be able to take the dogs out soon. My physio said maybe in 6 weeks I will be free to go out on my own. I'll get used to going out everyday for a short walk and work with the dogs in the house. Then add a dog to the walk.

It all sounds good, lets see if I can do it!

I fell today outside with the dogs. I was trying to use the new poop scoop that is supposed to save you bending over. My balance wasn't good enough and I landed on our path. I couldn't hike myself up with the splint on my foot so I took that shoe off. I still couldn't because the ground was to muddy.

So I yelled for help for awhile but our double pained windows kept the noise away. Icy was good and when he head me yell for help me barked and woo woooed with me. Star chased her tail in between sniffing me to see if I was alright. So far I would say Icy is the best with helping me out. Anyway, we all failed to draw attention so I crawled to the steps of our path and hiked myself up using one crutch and the guttering on the building next to ours and got on my feet.

I have all the muddy stuff in the wash and am sitting on my heating pad in a lot of muscular pain but I don't think anything is broken. It's just lucky I have an ample bum. :)

Anyway considering Icy is willing to bring me toys when I ask for them (Star is trying to make a stand against not getting treats for no work) and with his natural instinct to bark when I was calling for help, I am seeing him as the bigger help around the house right now. Though if anyone was there I'm sure Star's chasing her tail would have attracted attention! *lol*

We have plans to put paving slabs over the area in the Summer (hopfully the ground will dry out a bit). My attempt at growing grass failed and the dogs use the path anyway, so I doubt they will mind. Hopfully I'll be walking them by then anyway and they can do their buisness when we're out.

I figure next time I'll leave the door open so the dogs can alert anyione in the house. Even if they just run around and I don't follow, somone will know something is up. We also have two walkie talkies that Dave got before I came home. I figure I'll bring one out with me or failing that, my cell phone.

I still haven't gotten that book I ordered. I will have to check on that.

I think maybe Star has grown a bit taller and her shoulders are bulking out a bit. I think once I start both dogs on some light weights it will really show. Since we have two stair cases in the house I think I might start them carrying weights in here before we go out. Build up some muscles. Dave did a great job of keeping them lean despite their lack of exercise. It shouldn't be hard to get back into it.

I did my cleaning the kitchen, put washing in the washiig machine and I added to my duties to take the dogs out to the back and pick up poop. There was only one pile but I also picked up some trash that had blown over the fence. I'll do this everyday.

Icy was laughing and Star was very serious when we went downstairs and they both watched me from the path while I put my coat on and walked out. They also walked next to me when were out and waited for the command to come in. I sat in one of our chairs for awhile and just enjoyed the wind and the dogs. Then we played in the house for an hour. Jason, Icy, Star & I.

Both Icy and Star's Service Packs have arrived. Don't they look fetching? They will help me mainly indoors but this will warn people to give way a bit when we're out.

I hope this works. I made a slideshow of my practice with the dogs today. I don't think it came up with a hyperlink.

My husband Dave obediently took a lot of photos for me to add to my Training Diary. Its mostly for me if I have to train another dog from such a disabled stand-point, in the future. Maybe it will help a few people. Dunno.

http://s244.photobucket.com/albums/gg22/Mayvren/?action=view¤t=567c513a.pbw

My theory is to walk them around my living room until we both feel comfortable enough to go out. I am ambidextrous so I use a different dog on either side and the crutch on the other. So that (hopefully) in the future I will be able to walk both dogs again and they will be trained their appointed sides.

It went well. Both dogs remembered their prior training and though excited; remained slow and easy on me. :)

They both seem mighty pleased. I think they thought I would never take them with me. Now they know we're working toward it. A great start too! I didn't fall and neither dog tried to put me off my legs. Icy was better but all in I thought they were much better than I expected.

To Star's credit, she only had about 1 month of training before I was in the hospital. Icy is my older dog and I expected more from him. They both were excellent and got lots of praise and treats.

My physio progress has been so good that they think I will be fully capable of going out on my own. ...

My physio progress has been so good that they think I will be fully capable of going out on my own. So now I have decided to train both dogs to help me around the house. Icy is great indoors but he had a real aggression problem when I first adopted him that made me edgy about using him as any kind of Service Dog. Star is young and getting there.

She still has the urge to help even though she doesn't know how yet (I bought that book "Pack Mates" but I'm waiting for it arrive). A few days ago I fell and my husband was trying to get me standing so I could sit on our bed. Star lept onto the bed and put her paws on my shoulders to support me. When I sat down she moved off. I'm dead serious. My husband attributes it to be bid for attention but she wasn't excited, just worried. Icy just thought "let the man sort it out". Though when I was on the floor both of them would have helped if they knew how.

So I think that is going well. I think I have managed to re-bond with them well. My plan is to have the two dogs wearing packs in the house. Icy loves his pack and Star's should be here any day now. I can start them off caring some light stuff in their packs. Before I got ill I had Icy up to 10lbs distributed between sides of his pack. We'll slowly work back to that. It will give them a little more purpose and exercise while I am getting able to walk them.

As I said before I will start by walking them one at a time around the house, then the garden, and then down the sidewalk to our park. It's not far but it will be a lot of work. The park has a sidewalk I can walk on while the dog is on the grass. I'll take them one at a time first; and maybe take my husband along with Icy as I don't know if he will go back on his training. We had gotten to the point where he no longer looked at other dogs. It took over a year but it was much better than him lunging at a distant dog. I doubt he'd do that with me now but better be safe than sorry. Both dogs are very attentive to how stable I am and what I need. As I am to them

I've had to halt my training plans for now as I am waiting on a new leg splint. The old one is very painful and I still use it daily but not as much. The weather has also put a halt on me getting outside as it is all ice and snow right now. I would love to be out playing with the dogs right now!

As my physios seem to think I will have full mobility back, I have now revised my training ideas to training both dogs to help me in the house. I am still waiting on Star's pack and that book "Team Mates" which I had to order from the US.

I plan on walking each dog on a lead around the house first and then the back garden. Then i will take them one at a time to a little park near by. There is total sidewalk the whole way and it's flat. I'm hoping to work myself up to maybe taking them both at the same time and getting our distance up. For the beginning I will work on reminding them of their basic training. Both have packs that they will wear and I will build up their muscles that way again like I did originally with Icy.

So that's the plan for now. As I'm sure you can see, my plans are fairly fluid at this point. I'm still amazed I will not be needing a Service Dog outside the house.

On Tuesday is Jason's Christmas Sing-A-Long thing at his preschool (nursery) and I'm planning on going in the wheel chair. I'll have my husband push (in case of ice) and I'll take Star for her first outing. She gets her stitches from her spaying out on Monday so I think even if her gear arrives by then, she'll be to tender. So I will send a message with my husband or MIL so they know she's a Service Dog In Training just without her distinguishing gear. I have a lead that can attach around my waist that I use so my hands are free for wheeling or using my crutch.

I think before the snow hits again on Friday I will take her out in the back garden and get her used to being out with me and Icy used to being alone in the house. I dunno what his reaction will be when we leave him. He can get himself quite stressed over little things.

The physios now say that they feel I will get all my mobility back and I may not need Star's help for long. But in my experience she should help give me the confidence I need to trust myself in crowds and stuff! Her gear is apparently on it's way through UPS International Priority. I need to check when it is due to arrive! I'm excited! I figure I'll have Icy wear his pack in the house too so he doesn't feel left out. Maybe he'll want to join in with his pack on! He does love that pack....

I'm not used to fear but I was afraid after the physio told me that on Friday. When you wake up and can't move or talk you have to be ready for a life in a wheel chair. I've been working and fighting but in the back of my mind I was ready for the worst. To hear that it will probably not happen (assuming I don't have a fall) was a lot to take in. I've been focusing on little goals but to hear that they all add up to me being able to walk my son to school was amazing.

I got Star's grear shorted out! I got her the pack on this page http://www.activedogs.com/outward-bound-excursion-backpacks.html a leash and a tag saying Service Dog on it. I got the red/clay colour and I have a patch that a friend is making me with her face and name on it; that I'll attach on my own. There's a good book called "Team Work" that I will buy when I get more holiday money. Star gets fixed on Thursday the 9th (tomorrow).

Star certainly has the natural instincts for it. Today instead of scarfing a chocolate bar she found, she brought it and dropped it at my feet! This is new behaviour for her as she normally eats just about anything and everything. When I came upstairs from exercising she hadn't eaten Jason's dinner either and she would normally have (especially as it was meatballs, sausage & spaghetti). Mind you Icy was good too and didn't go for it either (though he would have had the chocolate).

I can't wait to start really working with her. She's probably the smartest dog I've ever had and she WANTS to help. Without a lead she's been walking at my right side (bad side), right at heel position. I've hardly taught her anything yet and not how to retrieve or heel. It's all her as I know when we adopted her she had never worn a collar before!

I've been thinking about it and I have a hiking leash that was Ookies before she died, I can attach it around my waste and then I will have my hands free for wheeling or walking. Apart from the odd pooing incident (she has a sensitive tummy) she has been very attentive and obedient with me. I know my husband Dave is worried about me trying it but if I have trouble the upstairs hallwall is the place to have it as I can catch myself.
