now that the weather is pretty good most days, mom thinks we should go to the beach every afternoon, do the stroll, talk to the other dogs and their peeps. It's really not my thing, I find it kinda stressful but Sniffers loves it - so we compromised - I stay home and enjoy some fresh pulled carrots while mom and Sniffers do the beach thing - I don't miss going along, they don't miss the carrots, and everyone is happy!

Big buzzword these days, multi tasking - well I don't know about you, but I just can't handle it, I have to focus on one thing at a time.

for example, mom is in the kitchen cooking and bits of food fall on the floor - at the same time Sniffers is in the window barking her head off - what to do?? I want to back up Sniffers, but I also want to clean the kitchen floor - it's sooo stressful - but guess what wins most of the time? Yup, food !!!

so it's a cool overcast day, and mom decided it would be a good time to clean out some kitchen cupboards. Ever ready to help I got into a dog bed to watch the proceedings, when all of a sudden mom knocked over a box of rice krispies, which spilled all across the floor! Did she hurry and scoop it all up? Nooooooo! she left it for me to take care of !! BOL BOL

I got there first, then Geneva dove in too and we both worked like mad to clean the floor! Pretty soon we had it all eaten up, now we're just gonna watch and hope something else falls that will require our help !!

Well it was the third annifursary of my gotcha day yesterday and I received some nice pressies and wishes from my dogster furiends. Did I get presents from the pawrents? No! A car ride perhaps? No! I got a poodle sister, OMD.

Two days ago we had visited a friend who breeds poodles, we met several poodles (yawn) but didn't think it was going anywhere....just a visit, right..... Wrong !! Last night a car stopped in front of our house and a man came in carrying two poodles - my eyes went wide, I barked, mom shushed me. The pawrents talked to the man, they laughed and smiled at the poodles...next thing we knew the man was leaving with only one poodle and the other one stayed here. We learned her name is Geneva and she was up for adoption; the second one was the man's companion.

mom told us that Geneva and a couple of others are 7 years old and all need new homes; the breeder re-homes the seniors as new pups arrive. I immediately felt sorry for Geneva and put on my best face, it is after all strange and new to her after being in one home for 7 years, so I guess it's really her gotcha day too, and we will have to celebrate together from now on.

come on Geneva, let me show you around the garden - but no touching my blueberry bushes, ok ?

this is our first summer in this house so we have been anxious to see what comes up in the garden. Surprise!! we have three big blueberry bushes, and they are really producing. "We" go pick some several times a day and eat them fresh right off the bush!

I stay out after mom quits cause the birds have also discovered this treat, so I chase them away, darned if they are gotta get our berries! Then of course I have to go over every inch of the ground "just in case" some have fallen and been missed! they're too good to waste !

Dad laughs at me, but tonight he dug through his old records and came up with Fats Domino singing, "I found my thrill on blueberry hill".

Indeed!!

There was a really great parade in our little town yesterday to celebrate Canada Day. Lots of floats and great decorations and people throwing candy - but not dog treats - gotta complain about that one !

The day long celebrations wound up with a fireworks display at 10:30 pm. mom was worried about my sis Sniffers who does not like fireworks, so half an hour before they were to start, she fed us a little bit and got us outside for last potty in case it was too scary to go out later.

We were a couple of miles from the fireworks centre but we heard them loud and clear - some of the fireworks even made the windows rattle. Our reaction was different this time - Sniffers had curled up in a dog bed and gone to sleep, didn't even seem to notice the noise, but I was a bit unnerved by the booms and started to pace a bit.

Mom knew she shouldn't make a big deal out of it and reinforce that fireworks are bad or anything, but she did pick me up and give me a belly rub for the whole time the fireworks were going off, which was 12 minutes. A 12 minute belly rub, isn't that some kind of record, should we call Guinness ??!!!

belly up to the bar furiends, it's salad time! Yes I am talking about real honest-to-goodness raw veggies here.

When dad got the "big C" dx he and mom hit the books and read that increasing fruits and veggies and reducing meat and dairy, could be a big help - so our fridge is loaded with produce now. Every night it's chop chop on the old cutting board, and pretty soon I realized this was something very good.

After a few nights of chop chop, mom realized I was sitting right there giving her my most intense look so she left some pieces on the board and set it down on the floor for me to try, never dreaming I would actually eat it!

BOL! Of course I ate it! and begged for more! Now I get my own portion of salad every day. there's not much I don't like, except maybe that pesky parsley - I can't seem to chew it enough, it kinda tickles and I end up spitting it out, but everything else is devoured !!

so we got a routine going now - fridge opens, cutting board comes out, I sit! Shortly after I am rewarded!

now don't forget to eat your greens y'all !!

PS if any fur loves salad as much as I do, send me a p-mail, I want to hear about it !! BOL BOL

Since we moved to another town, mom has to hit the yellow pages all the time to find tradespeople and such. This time it was to find a dogtor that does chiropractic - sadly she found one and today was the day.

The approach to the clinic was nice, lots of grass, and we got there early so there was time to check it out. Then mom in her singsong happy voice exclaims "let's go this way" and before we know it Sniffers and I find ourselves standing in the reception area. When we were called into an exam room Sniffers put the brakes on and had to be carried in,but I managed to walk on my own.

The new dogtor said we looked good, and weren't badly out of alignment or anything. We were kind of liking him, and that's when he became so rude - I can hardly believe what he said, unfamiliar words to be sure, "could stand to lose a little weight". Insensitive I tell ya, what girl wants to have her weight remarked on, especially by strangers!

I wasn't really sure what the consequences of this remark would be until mom explained it means less cookies and more veggies, like green beans for example.

Heck I like green beans, but I still want cookies on the side. Apparently there is no more side, at least not as often, until the scale proves I have lost a bit.

As I write this it is a million hours since I've had a cookie; mom says not true it's only 9 hours, but I think it's really closer to a million. Poor me.

I think mom likes the neighbor's dog far too much, and makes a big fuss of her when we happen to meet on the street, so I have no choice but to stand my ground and bark the whole time. "Roma" is a wirehaired dachshund, and mom says she looks just like Cinders, the doxie who won her group at Westminster.

It turns out Roma is not the neighbour's dog,at least not yet. he is loooking after her for friends - but he might end up with her as the owners are not well.

He thinks it's cute that me and Roma both have similar beards. He says he washes hers with baby shampoo after she eats!!

Mom wanted to put her hand up and volunteer to let "Roma" come live with us. What!! No mom you can't do that, it was bad enough you let Roma sniff your hand and lick your fingers, this is going too far! I will just continue to stand and bark at her until you get over this crazy notion.

OK gonna go check to see if the coast is clear, then I will take mom for a long walk to try and clear her head. BAYL

Three more sleeps and we move to a new yard - it comes with a new house too....new to us that is, it is 9 years old.

Sure hope the yard is good but I dunno - we have apple and pear trees in our present one (see previous diary entries), and I don't believe the new yard has any, although mom thinks there might be a peach tree. Well maybe it is time I was introduced to a new fruit anyway, but I do love those apples. Mom assures me there will always be apples, that she will buy them for me - I'm going to hold her to that.

The pawrents have been packing boxes for days, mom says we have way more stuff than she thought. there was a major decluttering done earlier this year, and stuff continues to be donated to charity, but still there's an awful lot left over.

We had a real nice schnauzer meetup group going here that we will miss, so I think we are going to start one at our new place.

We'll bark again when we've checked out the new yard.

My barkday is July 4 - yup, that's right, July 4 - and a holiday at that - declared just for me I believe !! I was born American but a few years later I emigrated to Canada. here we celebrate Canada Day on July 1 - both holidays seem about the same to me - time off work, b-b-q's, fireworks, and so on.

all those pawties and b-b-q's happening on and around my barkday, yippee! I had a great day - started it off with a happy-barkday-tummy-rub the minute I opened my eyes. I had breakfast, read all the nice messages from my dogster pals, and followed up with a nap and later, a full backyard inspection.

After lunch we headed out - me, mom and fursis Sniffers. I had no idea what the plan was,it was all hush hush, apparently meant to be a surprise, and surprise it was - Our first stop was at a big park for a long walk and all the sniffing time I wanted - non of this "hurry up Dixie", no, it was my day and I set the pace!

Once we had "done" the park we got into the car, and drove to a pet store I'd never been to before - that store was packed with goodies, so much to explore, and the staff person was so friendly and gave treats. He must have known it was my barkday!! I picked out some bully sticks and cookies, then it was back into the car and on to - OMD!! a second pet store - where I shopped some more and selected some veal chews and a different type of cookie. The staff there were friendly too and also gave treats. They must have known it was my barkday!

After all this in and out of the car stuff, meeting my subjects, and inspecting a major park, I was pretty tired, and opted for ice cream at home rather than out somewhere.

Mom hauled my shopping into the house, got out the butterscotch ripple ice cream and we all enjoyed some - I took a quick nap and soon it was supper time - later I enjoyed one of the veal sticks, and then off to bed, to dream sweet dreams...

Winter is pretty much over here, there are bulbs coming up all over the place, some are even blooming - daffodils, hyacinths, its starting to look a lot like Spring - yay!! Dad has even cut the grass twice!

School is going good, it is still mostly Big dogs, but there is a cute little havanese in my class this time named LuLu, her mom brings good treats - like Cheese!! Its true, I do pay more attention when the treats are better - so mom has been taking sliced chicken - that's getting a bit predictable now, I think she should change to beef for a while, or some of that cheese stuff ! BOL

Since my last diary entry I've had an ultrasound - I had to lie on my back for 40 minutes while the dogtor did the test but they said I was very good and didn't move a muscle - it was kinda like getting a belly rub I thought, so I didn't mind. Anyway the test was all normal, organs look good. Mom said this is a baseline for the future, she likes to do this on all the furs every two or so years - things show up on ultrasound before they ever show in bloodwork so I guess that's a good thing.

Now spring is just around the corner we've had some spring rain - you know, light and warm, not cold and heavy like winter - well it brought out the worms !! I tried a couple but they weren't like I thought they'd be so I spit them ! Right now mom is teaching me "leave it", which is probably going to be a good thing to know, given that everything goes into my mouth, no questions asked. "Drop it" would have been a good command for the poor worm, but I haven't learned that yet BOL

ok I gotta go check stuff out, so BAYL

what's the big deal here, its a green veggie isn't it !! And I havent met a veggie I dont like so far !!

Mom gave me another piece tonight and was amazed at how possessive I was and wouldnt let any other fur near it ! Well mom, lettuce is expensive this time of year, and I knew they'd only play with it, so lets not waste it.... and just in case you're wondering, it was leaf lettuce.

if you're reading this and you eat lettuce too, drop me a line, I need some support here !!

oh boy our last night of school was so much fun ! the teacher says ok no work tonight, we'll play some games.

first game - we had to walk around the room nicely on leash while mom held a ball in a spoon in her other hand...if she dropped it we would have to start over. I knew this was important and I walked so nicely and mom didnt drop anything !!

When we finished the walk everyone had to grab a T-shirt and dress their dog to show that he/she could be handled ok - touching paws etc. teacher wanted to be sure we would be good at being handled by vets, groomers, etc.

then the teacher says ok, let's introduce you to agility !! she gets out this tunnel thing and sets it up, but not full length. the teacher holds me at one end and mom is at the other end to coax me through. For some reason mom had thought I might need a real incentive tonight, so she brought ROAST BEEF!! I put one dainty paw in the tunnel and sniffed tentatively -- mom was leaning in from the other end with the beef in hand--it took a bit of coaxing the first time but I went through.

We did this 3 times altogether, each time the tunnel was made longer. By the third time I was running through with no hesitation, to get to the Beef and everyone cheered !! BOL BOL

I heard someone say "there should be an award for cuteness" !! BOL

All in all it was a great time, the only thing was that the teacher didnt bring our certificates so she has to mail them. I hope I get mine soon so I can put it on my page.

On the way home we stopped at Starbucks Drive Thru for mom's treat, and there was 3 cars ahead of us. when we got to the window they had no record of our order, so mom's latte was free !!!

Mom says we are signing up for level 2 in the new year, apparently its more work, I wonder if mom is up to it! oh boy !

We were just lying about thinking of going to bed when mom turned to the TV weather channel and then whimpered while going quite pale.

Sniffers explained to me that mom does this when something called snow is in the forecast. What is this thing called snow? I am from Texas you know, and not used to the cold temps we are currently experiencing here in my new northern home land. In fact on our walk today I really had to hurry mom along so I wouldnt freeze my buns off. she had put a sweater on me, but it was very thin, summer weight, not enough for a brisk December day.

mom is worrying now that if it snows we won't get to our final night of school, apparently it is "graduation" and we were told to bring cameras!! We dont want to miss that and certainly dont want to break our pawfect attendance record - hey there! Mr Snow, if you're listening, please hold off til I graduate, ok ?

Found a windfall in the yard today !! I had just about given up hope of finding food out there again, especially since its been cold with frost the last two nights so that even the mushrooms froze and disappeared.

Anyhow, I was checking the yard with Sniffers, when all of a sudden what did we spy - peanuts socked away in an indent in the lawn!! musta been put there over night by the neighborhood squirrels, can't think how else they got there.

We would have gotten away with it too if Sniffers had chewed more discreetly, but no she had to stand there moving her mouth in such a manner as to make mom suspicious and walk over to where we were. Busted!! mom picked up the stash and tossed it (sigh), maybe Mr Squirrel will bring more tonight....we'll be checking first thing in the a.m.

Well! Saturday morning and I thought we'd have a sleep in, but before I know it I've had my breakfast and mom is brushing me, and saying "car ride".

Off we went (Sniffers and me) to a pet store where I met this person called Santa - he was wearing a big red suit, and had a huge white beard you could hide treats in...wow if only I had a beard like that, I could eat for a week from all the stuff I'd save in there !!

Next thing I know mom is putting us on Santa's lap (gulp) and people I don't even know are jumping around with squeaky toys and waving treats and calling our names - how'd they know our names? and this photographer guy is taking our pictures.

Mom was clicking away with her camera too, and Santa was so patient and let her take all the pics she wanted. Then we paid for the pics the official photographer took - the money is to help orphaned cats, so that's good; and mom bought a calendar by donation too, and a book of dog walks for our area so she can plan future schnauzer meetups.

Whew all that before 11 a.m., I am so going back to bed !!

Six weeks of school down with two to go. We are the only ones with perfect attendance so far. There are always one or two absent each week and I can't say I blame them - its been raining a lot and since the classes are in the evening, its pretty dark and miserable driving there, but our attitude is that we paid for it, we are going to get all we can from it - and unless it snows we will be there !

I'm proud to say Mom is doing quite well with the training, and I am learning something too. We both understand Come, Sit, Stay, although we still need lots of practise, and we are working on nice leash walking.

There is a tremendous amount of treats involved in the training which sure gets my attention, and since mom has been doing so well, I let her stop at a drive thru Starbucks after every class for her treat...so we're both happy and we sure sleep good when we get home.

Thursday night it was dark and rainy, and I had just settled in for a nap, when mom picked up my leash and said 'car ride'. I thought it was a bit strange, but ok I like car rides, I will go along with this. She was stuffing plastic bags and treats into her pockets, and next thing I knew we were off to this thing called "school".

There was six other dogs there, various ages and sizes. We all checked each other out, and then we had to sit down while the trainer spoke to our pawrents for a while. Then she introduced a little square box that makes a noise when pushed; apparently it is called a Clicker - and every time we made eye contact it was followed by Click and Treat. Mom handled this pretty good, I was quite proud of how well she did for her first night, and so on the way home I insisted we stop and get mom her own treat at Starbucks.

Mom says we are going to school again next week - I hope its as fun as the first night. Click! Treat!

Dear Diary, As I noted in my previous diary entry, I was doing well as Pear Inspector until mom caught me, insisted they were unfit to eat, and tossed them all.

After that I went looking for a substitute, and my goodness if I didnt discover some apples in the same delicious condition, and therefore immediately proclaimed myself Apple Inspector. I would have gotten away with it too, as the pawrents didnt seem to realize there were still apples hiding under some bushes and trees, but greedy little me, I overdid it and upchucked it all this morning in the living room, right in front of both mom and dad !!

Oh boy there was just no way to get out of that one - mom did her "mom inspection" on it, proclaimed it to be rotten apples, put on some old gloves and went out hunting - yup, she crawled around the trees and bushes on her belly, leaving no rock unturned, and I think she found them all.

But she didnt stop there - she mentions to dad that I am also snacking on the berries that fall off the laurel tree, and next thing I know, dad is getting out a hammer, and some stakes, and a big roll of green plastic coated wire, and in no time at all, he's completely cut off my access in and around the laurel...

Like they say, things happen in three's - I've lost my Pear Inspector license, and my Apple Inspector license, and I've been denied access to the laurel tree berries - geesh what's a girl to do! I guess I'll go lick Sniffers' ears for a while.

Dear Diary, my life has been a whirlwind lately with many changes.

In a nutshell, the home I had in Texas turned me over to rescue, then I was vetted and adopted and emigrated to Canada, all in a few short weeks!! The plane trip was ok, but I had to stay in my carrier unde the seat and no one offered me so much as a crumb! Fortunately the trip was not that long, so I didn't starve to death!!

The weather is a lot cooler here in Canada, and I like being covered up at night. In the mornings I seek out a sunbeam to warm me, and then the afternoons generally warm up nicely -- I like to spend time in my new yard then... It's a big fenced yard with several trees and there is always stuff to check out. I heard it rains a lot in the winter so don't know what that will be like.

I've appointed myself Pear Inspector, or Pear-a-site as dad says ! There is a huge pear tree behind our property that drops pears into our yard, of course they're pretty much over for this year, and dad cleaned up the ground, but I have managed to find several mushy rotting ones that were overlooked, delicious I tell ya, and I have been munching on them every chance I get, but mom keeps telling me I shouldnt do that, and muttering something about competing with wasps as she throws them away. What a party poop!

She also seems upset when I chew the berries that fall off the laurel tree; she seems to think that's not a good idea and I keep hearing this "No" word; I dont know what that means, and mom must think I'm deaf 'cause she keeps repeating it !

Apart from these two annoyances, the rest of the place is pretty good; and the new fursibs are friendly. Sniffers is quite ladylike and can be a bit reserved, but hey I heard that Canine-dians can be like that !!

Mom says we're going to school soon. What is this school I wonder. When I find out I'll let you know.
