: The Mastín Español is rather mellow around the home. As powerful and hardworking as it is, this canine will kick back on the couch for hours if allowed. Not overtly affectionate or animated, the Mastín Español still likes to keep close to family members—as you go from room to room, the Mastín Español will probably be right there with you.
Don’t get the impression that this dog is lazy. The Mastín Español is very watchful and protective of its environment. It is an excellent but restrained watchdog with enough intelligence to know the difference between friend and foe. Overall, the Mastín Español is a strong, confident dog with a real sense of duty and fellowship when it comes to family.
Things You Should Know
: The Mastín Español can live as long as 11 years. Common health issues include hip dysplasia, entropion (when the eyelids become inverted) and bloat. To prevent bloat, feed it several small meals per day as opposed to one big meal. Grooming the Mastín Español is simple. Brush its short coat every week (or more) and regularly check its ears for signs of infection. Remember to keep its teeth clean as well.

: Also known as the Spanish Mastiff, the Mastín Español has been guarding flocks and providing companionship in its native country for centuries. Probably derived from ancient Molosser dogs brought to Spain thousands of years ago by Asian traders, the Mastín Español today ranks as one of Spain’s most popular canines.
The Look of the Mastín Español
: The Mastín Español has a strong, powerful frame covered in a short, straight coat that usually comes in black, red, yellow, gray, brownish red or spotted patterns. Its body is usually longer than tall, and its powerful head has a deep muzzle, hanging ears, heavy lips and a mastiff-like dewlap. It has thick, loose skin and a hanging tail. Overall, the Mastín Español looks rugged but handsome.
