History

:
A cross between the Jack Russell Terrier and the Miniature Poodle, the Jackapoo originated along with a host of other "hybrid" dogs that became popular for being hypoallergenic and (supposedly) healthier than many purebred canines. Some breeders believe the Jackapoo's sturdiness and friendliness come from "hybrid vigor," which is when a healthier dog results from combining two purebreds.

The Look of the Jackapoo

:
Depending on the size of the Poodle parent, the Jackapoo's size can range anywhere from small to medium, and its coat can range from flat to wavy. Because it's a cross between two purebreds, the Jackapoo can have slightly different looks from dog to dog—sometimes having a square-jawed, wirehaired "Terrier" look, sometimes having a fluffier, Poodle look. But every Jackapoo has one thing in common: a cute, lively and smooch-able face.

What They're Like to Live With

:
The Jackapoo combines the energetic athleticism of the Jack Russell Terrier with the intelligence and adaptability of the Poodle. This dog has a high level of stamina and a vivacious sense of play. It's also intelligent and trainable, proving to be quite helpful when there's a job to do. Overall, the Jackapoo is eager to please and a lot of fun to be around.

For those who like an affectionate dog, the Jackapoo is an excellent choice. At the end of the day, this canine likes nothing better than to curl up with its owner on the couch or the bed and snooze the evening away. It's also quite protective, barking zealously when it senses something suspicious.

Things You Should Know

:
When raising a Jackapoo puppy, train and socialize early: The more exposure it has to new people, other dogs and children, the more comfortable it will be adapting to new situations as it gets older. The Jackpoo needs lots of daily exercise and family time to feel settled and centered. If left alone for too long or insufficiently exercised, this dog can get cranky and out of sorts.

The Jackapoo can live as long as 16 years with relatively few genetic health issues. Nevertheless, it's a good idea to regularly inspect the Jackapoo's ears, feet and eyes for signs of infection, and schedule regular health visits based on a veterinarian's advice. Grooming could not be easier: Brush its coat regularly and bathe it when the need strikes.
