History

:
The Chug, which is a cross between the Chihuahua and the Pug, originated as one of many "hybrid" dogs that became popular during the late 1990s. Many of these canines were praised for being hypoallergenic and (supposedly) healthier than purebred canines. According to some breeders, the Chug's energy and enthusiasm come from "hybrid vigor," which is when a healthier dog results from the crossing of two purebreds.

The Look of the Chug

:
Chugs can have different looks, depending on the parents. But, if you’re trying to identify one on the street, it's not too hard: They look pretty much like Pugs crossed with Chihuahuas. The Chug has a small and sturdy frame covered in a short coat. Its face has those familiar Pug wrinkles, but the snout is slightly longer-like the Chihuahua. It has sturdy legs, erect ears that tend to hang forward, and a curled tail.

What They're Like to Live With

:
The Chug is a nice combination of two great purebred companions, combining the Pug's cuddly nature with the Chihuahua's courage and protectiveness. But, if the Chihuahua has a big-time attitude and the Pug has an aristocratic streak, the Chug balances those traits into a likeable, outgoing pup. It’s also quite clever and easy to train.

Some traits from the individual breeds may still show, however. Some Chugs can be protective and bold, standing up mightily to a perceived threat. And, like the Pug, the Chug will do anything to get your attention. These cute little canines will hop right next to you the minute you sit down on the couch. The Chug, like its parents, is a friend for life.

Things You Should Know

:
The Chug can live as long as 16 years. Being a hybrid breed, it suffers from few genetic health issues, but some may develop eye or respiratory problems. Inspect the Chug's ears, feet and eyes for signs of infection, and schedule regular health visits based on a veterinarian’s advice. Keep in mind that the Chug is small and fragile, so handle it with care.

Chugs are superb apartment and city dwellers, adjusting well to small spaces. Just make sure they get a nice daily walk and the occasional romp in a protected outdoor area. Grooming the Chug is easy. Just brush its coat every week and treat it to the occasional bath.
