What They're Like to Live With

:
Chorkies are fantastic household companions. Combining the Chihuahua's loyalty and protectiveness with the Yorkshire Terrier’s bravery and intelligence, the Chorkie can offer loads of fun and friendship to any family. Curious and zestful outdoors, the Chorkie also makes a cuddly couch companion.

Chorkies are great city dogs. They may bark a little, but they can make anyone living alone feel like they've got someone looking out for them. Playful and sweet with children, they may be slightly wary of strangers and other pets. With the proper training and socialization, the Chorkie will be perfectly comfortable with everyone.

Things You Should Know

:
The Chorkie can live as long as 15 years. Being a hybrid breed, it suffers from few genetic health issues. Inspect the Chorkie's ears, feet and eyes for signs of infection, and schedule regular health visits based on a veterinarian's advice. Keep in mind that the Chorkie is small and fragile, so handle with care.

Depending on the length of coat, Chorkies should be brushed anywhere from every few days to every week. Bathe when necessary. The Chorkie is an excellent apartment dog, not needing too much space to feel comfortable. But it should have a daily walk to satisfy its curiosity, its need for fresh air and its exercise requirements.

History

:
The Chorkie (bred from the Chihuahua and the Yorkshire Terrier) originated as one of several hybrid dogs that became popular during the late 1990s. According to some breeders, the Chorkie’s positive energy and solid health comes from "hybrid vigor," which is when a healthier dog results from the crossing of two purebreds.

The Look of the Chorkie

:
The Chorkie "look" can vary, depending upon the parents. The Chihuahua's short coat may offset the Yorkie's long coat; however, a longhaired Chihuahua could create a longhaired or furry Chorkie in a wide range of colors and color combinations. The Chorkie has a nicely rounded head with dark, expressive eyes and a dark, button nose. Sometimes the ears hang low, and sometimes they are erect. Their delicate, square frames look like they could easily snuggle in the crook of your arm.
