Glen of Imaal Terriers are easygoing, compatible housemates. Brash and energetic outdoors, they can be quite relaxed indoors. On any given afternoon, you might find the Glen of Imaal snoozing on the couch. Glen of Imaal Terriers like to be close to family members and involved in household activities. Leave them alone for too long and they can get listless, bored and/or mischievous. Playful with children, some Glen of Imaal Terriers can be feisty and combative around other dogs. They make great apartment dogs, rarely barking unless there’s a reason.

Glen of Imaal Terriers can live as long as 15 years. Common health issues include hip dysplasia, eye disorders (like progressive retinal atrophy) and skin irritations. Grooming the Glen of Imaal Terrier is not too taxing: To prevent the coat from matting, brush once or twice per week and have it stripped several times per year. With professional instruction, stripping and trimming can be performed adequately at home.

Named for a remote valley in Ireland’s Wicklow Mountains, the Glen of Imaal Terrier was bred to hunt rats and foxes. Its small, low frame allowed it to get in hard-to-reach burrows and foxholes. Still rare in the U.S., this spunky little terrier is now considered a cherished household companion.

The Look of the Glen of Imaal Terrier

Glen of Imaal Terriers are long, low and solid. They have wide, slightly domed heads, pricked ears, strong muzzles, and brown eyes with an intelligent and alert expression. Glen of Imaal Terriers have muscular necks, deep chests, short legs and thick tails that are normally docked. Their medium-length, dense coats can come in blue, brindle or wheaten colors.
