What They’re Like to Live With

:
Australian Terriers are strong, determined, loving pals. They are also eager to please and easy to train. Aussies’ hardworking nature makes them wonderful companions on farms, ranches or in the country. They’re also very good at keeping little critters away. With keen eyesight and hearing, Australian Terriers don’t miss a beat around the home. Their watchdog instincts, as you can imagine, are superb.

Things You Should Know

:
Australian Terriers can live15 years or longer. Generally free of genetic health issues, some can develop tumors and diabetes. Grooming the Aussie is fairly easy. A good brushing every week or so will suffice. Also, be sure to trim the hair around their ears and eyes when it gets too long. The Australian Terrier should only be bathed when necessary—too much soap can remove its natural oils.

Australian Terrier History

:
One of the first recognized Australian breeds, the Australian Terrier was most likely derived from a combination of several English terriers including the Yorkie, the Cairn and the Skye. “Aussies” were and always have been hard workers, herding, guarding and pest-controlling Outback ranches and farms.

The Look of the Australian Terrier

:
Australian Terriers are small, sturdy working terriers—longer than tall—covered in straight, harsh coats that usually come in shades of sand, red, and blue & tan. Their heads have long muzzles, dark eyes, small pointed ears and soft tufts of hair on the top. Their tails, usually docked, are carried high without curling over. Overall, Australian Terriers have a lively, hardy and spirited look.
