I had a 10 year old golden/irish setter mix who last fall had first, a diagnosis of horner's syndrome, and second an episode of pericardial effusion. He bounced back from both wonderfully, and we assumed that he got into poison because his blood work returned to normal after the p.e.. 10 days ago we boarded him and he started to bleed profusely out of his upper gum. They thought perhaps he had an abscess tooth but the bleeding never stopped for long enough for them to xray. They also thought that the bleed was secondary to the cancer, probably hemangiosarcoma, even though that didn't show up on the xray after the p.e.. He never stabilized, and in the end, he stopped eating and walking and we had to put him down. Even after he got home and started taking Vit. K and Prednisone in high doses, he continued to decline. They still wonder if he had a tumor in his gum that drove it all, but I am wondering what your thoughts are? Was there something else we could have done

It is hard to put a dog down, you always want to ask "Could I have done more". I was in the same boat with a dog years ago with an enlarged heart. I know he was not well, and i loved him to much to let him suffer. I miss him yet and that has been 15 years ago now. I think about it once in awhile and wonder what I could have done. But sometimes there is just nothing you can do. Just try to remember the good times and everything they did to make you happy. I am very sorry for your loss.

You can second guess your self all you want, but it sounds like you did everything you could. There comes a point when the suffering out weights the treatment and/or looking for a diagnosis. That happened to us with our Golden a few years ago. He got really sick and we went from vet to vet looking for an answer. He got to the point where his suffering was just too much. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is to end their pain. Most of us here on Dogster have been through it. Your pup is in a better place. I am really sorry for your loss.
