Why is Magoo suddenly peeing in the house?

Magoo has never peed in the house before, now suddenly he is doing it. I lost my husband recently and now Magoo is lifting his leg on my grand daughters things. He even peed on my grand daughter yesterday! What can I do? I have caught him in the act twice which I stopped him in the midst of it, taking him out like I did when house training him. I know that male dogs "mark" but he is 1 1/2 years old now and has never done it before. Could this be stress or mourning? Any suggestions of what to do? He is not neutered either, I'd like to breed him when he reaches proper age to do so. Thanks

He may be announcing he is in charge now. It could be a combination of losing your husband and maturing. It is quite common for dogs to make leadership challenges up until they are 3 years old and their personality is mature. The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at www.dogsbestfriend.com For more on being top dog, see www.dogbreedinfo.com.

If better leadership doesn't correct the problem, neuter him. Marking in the house is a serious defect. No responsible breeder would ever use such a dog as breeding stock. We have plenty of well behaved dogs to use.

It might be his way of dealing with the stress. He doesn't understand what has happened.
