Why dose my dog act calm around other dogs, but when I allow him to go closer, he sniffs, and barks aggressively?

My dog Cooper is a German Shepard Boxer Mix that we adopted about 8 months ago. He is the sweetest dog you would ever meet. But when I take him on walks, when he see's another dog, he chuffs in away, but all i have to do is slightly tug the leash, and he seems to totally forget. If he's seen the dog before, he just totally ignores them, no matter how much they bark or try to go after him. But when he is allowed to sniff them, he pulls drastically, and sniffs... but then about 3 seconds to 10 seconds later, he barks once, agressively, and thats when I pull him back. I've never waited longer than that to see what would happen. But the thing that confuses me is that, we have a dog, and there best friends, and he met my grandmothers dog just recently, and he didn't even bark. I want to correct it, before it gets out of hand. He's a sweet dog, trust me! Dose this have something to do with his protective side? Please help, for I am so confused, I've never seen this behavior before.

There are some great books on dog lanquage and resource guarding. To dogs, its all about protecting what is theirs, their space, their human, any and everything revolves around their resources. It's an instinct that allowed them to survive in the wild. The book is by Brenda Aloff, Canine Body Language. The DVD is The Language of Dogs. They will open up a whole new world to you. Dogs really do communicate with each other. A friend of mine turned me on to them and I highly recommend to any dog lover.
