Dogs can have diarrhea for several reasons.

Have you changed your dog's diet lately? If you switched dog food and you didn't do it gradually by mixing the two foods, this will often cause diarrhea because the dog's stomach hasn't adjusted to the new food.

It is also possible that your dog got into something that is upsetting his/her stomach, which could cause your dog to also have diarrhea.

What are you feeding your dog now? It is possible, if your dog has had diarrhea for some time, that the food you are feeding is either too rich, or too low in quality. Low quality dog foods can tend to go right through dogs, and often cause diarrhea because they are not able to absorb any nutrients. Consider switching your dog's food if this is the case, and make sure if you do, that you do the switch gradually.

Regardless, if you are not sure why your dog has diarrhea, take him/her to the vet. Diarrhea can be very serious, especially in smaller breed dogs. Make sure your dog is drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. There are things you can give your dog to help keep things in, like canned pumpkin, but if you are unsure as to why your dog is having diarrhea, take him/her into the vet as soon as you can. Best of luck.

Your dog's vet can diagnose this most correctly.
