Why does my dog stare at the floor/rug/blanket and jerk his head around?

He will stare at the floor, rug or blanket and jerk his head around as if he can see something moving on the floor. Sometimes he will lick the area where he has been staring. I wondered if he could see fleas on the floor, but he is treated regularly for fleas and they have not been a problem.

His sense of smell is 50-100% better than ours, so he can tell if anything has been there before by scent, such as a bug, toad, food etc. If you put a treat down on the floor and your dog eats it, depending on the floor they will lick the floor as well in the same spot to get everything up. This sounds like normal terrier behavior because they are natural diggers- so he's following the characteristics of what he was born to do... probably hunting vermin in his mind... ^_^
