Why does a dogs saliva look foamy? This is just curiosity, nothing more.

This only happens when we go for a walk or play a lot and my GSD gets a bit warm. His saliva (that ends up on his lips because he's panting a bit) is kinda foamy. Why is that?? He's healthy, so that's not an issue. He gets plenty of water. My mutt also has 'foamy' saliva when she gets warm, so it's not just him.
