Why did my 13 y/o mini dachshund suddenly die?

He had a cough during the day, woke in the early morning with trouble breathing and white foam and blood coming from his mouth. Before this he had no major symptoms. Just sleeping more which I thought was because of his age. His appetite was still good.
He died on the way to emergency.

Could be many reasons, heart worms, other parasites, eating a bone that punctured something, infection, a tear or injury form activity, rabies. If you really want to know, you will have to have the vet do an autopsy.

It would be my guess to be some kind of heart disease. But I am not a vet so this is just a guess.

Sorry for your loss.

This is just a guess of course, but that sounds like the way my first dog died. A bit of coughing the day before - took him to the vet who gave us some meds, took him home. He died suddenly and violently the next day similar to the way you described - rushed him to the vet but he died on the way.

We had a necropsy done and he had a spleenic tumor. They are fairly common in dogs and because there are so few symptoms, they often aren't caught before it's too late. It's impossible to know what exactly your dog died from without a necropsy of course, just sharing my personal experience.

My 13 year old mini dachshund passed away 13 days ago. She was fine the night before and ate a lot (as usual). During the night she kept coughing. When I got up in the morning she went right to her food but then stopped and wouldn't eat. I knew then that there was something very seriously wrong with her. She wouldn't put her head down. I got on-line and found that she had symptoms of heart failure. I rushed her to the vet as soon as they opened. It was nearby. She died about 45 minutes later. The vet told me that she probably had a collapsed valve.
