When is it time to say good-bye to my beloved pet who has liver cancer? Answers at Dogster Answers.

We have a dear old Scottie...Maggie..she was diagnosed with liver cancer about 10mths go.. The early warning signs were bad breath which a shonky vet blamed it on her old teeth.. The disease progressed quickly to the point that Maggie couldn't get her head down to her food bowl...so off to a new vet who was onto the problem immediately...a battery of blood tests, xray, biopsy, CT scan etc and then the full sad story was revealed. We talked to a good surgeon, trawled the internet & decided to have a go at helping the good remaining part of her liver with a special diet . The amazing part of this sad & happy story is that our Maggie is a testament to the help you can give a dog with liver cancer. Essentially you have to discard almost all dried dog food...some vets explain that to get around the liver cancer induced problems you need to use an alternating protein/carbo diet..you carefully note what food she will eat and then use these carefully day by day. Maggie is still with us.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. If you feel like it you can paw mail me and tell me about her. I'd take her Sunday too because she might be in pain. Pat her softly and tell her what a good dog she is so she goes out and she will feel safe. It is one of the hardest things in life to do. I'd ultimately take the vets advice and follow your gut. I'll be thinking about you

I personally don't think so. ER vet on Sunday would be an excellent idea. When it comes to puting a pet to sleep, the general rule to go by is: if the dog's quality of life is very low and filled with pain, and there is no hope of getting rid of it or raising his quality of life to a reasonable level anytime soon, the best idea may be to put the dog out of it's misery.
