What's your "personal" opinion on "Designer Dogs"? Do you think it's OK for people to breed this dogs?

What's your personal opinion on Designer dogs?

I personally am against it, although I do agree that every dog needs a home, regardless of it's pedigree.

I don't however agree withe purposeful breeding of mutts, when so many of them are dying in shelters all of the time. I think it's unfair that people are scammed into paying $400+ for the same mixed breed do you can find in a shelter somewhere with an adoption fee around $150.

Again, this is my personal opinion, I want your take. Do you think it's OK for people to breed designer dogs?

All the same arguments you use could be used to discourage people from breeding purebreds- a lot of shelter dogs are purebred, so does that mean that no one should breed them either? I could buy a purebred German Shepherd from a great breeder for 1200 dollars, or I could get a rescue GSD for 200. Does that mean the breeder is "scamming me" because I could get a dog of that same breed for a lot less in rescue?

I don't think so- there are a lot of reasons to get a puppy from a GOOD breeder. The problem with "designer dogs" is that most of them are NOT from good breeders who care about health and temperament, and make sure their dogs don't end up in shelters (by properly socializing them so they are less likely to develop behavior problems, offering to take them back at any time, by screening homes before selling them, etc.)

A "Designer Dog" breeder who did all that would be totally fine in my book. There are a few out there like that.

If there was a shortage of dogs, I wouldn't have a problem with breeding mixed breeds just because they'd make good pets.
But I think there's not really a need for a new breed when we already have more than 400. Just breed the ones that are already here, IMO, for the purpose of promoting health and stability in the dogs.

I don't agree with the concept of "Designer" Dogs to start with. That whole approach is totally biased on the whims of people, who want something they think is more special than a standard Breed.

Mixing breeds has always been problematic, health and other negative issues abound !

I'm certainly FOR rescue and shelter acquisitions, but, we have enough "variety" in the Breeds as they are. We don't need to burden our shelter systems any more, when one finds out they bought a dud, and it's going to cost a LOT of money to fix it. So, they just dump them on the system.

Bad business

I think it's fine to breed "designer" breeds if they're a responsible breeder. I was looking in the local newspaper on Sunday and saw some Labradoodle puppies for $1,400 dollars and yes, that is too much!

I think there is pet overpopulation, but that goes without saying. However if you look back at the history of any dog breeds' origins, they all started out as mutts. There is a demand for a certain look, size and disposition. Breeders (well the good ones) see a demand to be met and they breed the dogs accordingly, to achieve a healthy mix of the desired traits. Once designer dogs have been around long enough to breed true (like breeding a goldendoodle to a goldendoodle for 2 or three generations), they will make their own breed and no longer be designer dogs.
