What would be the etiquette for fostering a dog for a family?

I have been in contact with a couple who is deploying in the next few months for a year and need someone to watch their dogs while they're away.

I am moving soon, and intend to find a pet friendly apartment and would love to do this for the couple. Our only concern is that I will be caring for two 40 pound dogs by myself. Obviously, a lot of things have to fall in place before I'm able to do this, and I have let them know this.

What questions should I be asking them? She assured me they are very well behaved and very sweet. I want to ensure this will be an ideal situation for both me and the dogs.

What would be okay for me to do with them. If i go home is it okay for me to bring them with me? What other concerns would you have?

Thank you in advance for any advice you have.

Even pet friendly apartments have rules which can get a pet and owner, evicted. Barking and destruction are top of the list.

If they live in an apartment now and are low energy, quiet dog, they might do okay.

But these dogs will have to make 2 adjustments, their owner leaving and moving to a different home. Even a perfect dog is going to have potty questions and some anxiety.

I would suggest a trial of a week, see how they do.

Write up a contract, of sorts, to spell out what you are willing to do as far as care, (medical) and it should be clear the owner is getting the dogs back at the end of the deployment.

Some things to consider: who will pay vet costs, both regular & emergency; who will pay for food; what is your liability if (god forbid) something happens to one of the dogs while in your care; provisions for what happens if something happens to you & you can no longer care for the dogs. As for activities, you don't say what breed/s the dogs are, so that would be tough to advise on. Walking, playing, & loving are all essential. How old are the dogs? Are they house broken? What type/how much training have they had? Are they altered? What a great thing you are doing for these folks! God bless & good luck!
