What would be a good brand of puppy food for a Miniature Dachshund puppy?

We've been on Purina Puppy Chow but we think its time for a change. We need a good healthy food thats not too expensive. What do you think?

Are you limited to normal pet store kind of brands? If so, then Avoderm or Blue Buffalo are good, some Petsmarts carry them. If you can find a specialty pet store (or Petcos I think have a better food selection) then I'd rec Merrick or Nature's Variety.

There's lots of good dog food info at

I try to feed a 4-5 star food, in my opinion most dogs don't need a 6 star (totally grain free) diet.

I have my Malti-Poo on Wellness Small Breed. He has done really well on Wellness as well as Summit.

Depends on what you consider "not too expensive."

I feed my German Shepherd Taste of the Wild, which is a grain free food. A big bag (I think it's 25 lbs, but am not sure off top of my head) is $46. That's pretty affordable for a grain free. I'd assume that, with a dog as small as a Dachshund puppy, that bag would last you FOREVER. *laughs*

A good "cheap" food is Blue Buffalo. Others to try are Natural Balance and Nutro Ultra, if your only options are chain pet stores. Costco's Kirkland brand food is also decent and very cheap.

If you have quality dog stores (like small stores), they carry better foods like Fromm's, Orijen, Taste of the Wild, etc. Considering you feed LESS when you feed a quality food, the price is about the same, if not less, than the cheap stuff!

My guy likes Artemis dog food. Mix it with some wet food some times so they don't get bored with any food.

I asked this same question about 6 weeks ago. I am now feeding mine Blue Buffalo Puppy formula. I get it at petsmart for 25.99 a 17lb bag. The dogs love it and seem to be happier and healthier. I am on a very limited income, so I was worried about price too. Since it's a better food they eat less of it. You should look the Blue Buffalo food up online, their process it really interesting. They use a cold process that keeps the nutrients in the food.
