It varies with different vets. There are low-cost spaying programs going on sometimes, such as Spay Day in February.

The price really varies. What you're looking at is not just the price of spay surgery, but also the price of the other things that are required before your dog can be spayed, such as a vet exam and basic shots such as rabies. Without those, most clinics will not do the surgery.
Fees really vary a lot depending on what vet you use. The vet I go to doesn't charge anything for the office visit itself, only for the shots and such, but other vets charge $50 or more just for the office visit. So it's best to call around and ask.
Fortunately, most areas have low-cost spay and neuter programs available. Check the website for your local shelter or SPCA, or call them and ask about low-cost spay and neuter clinics or coupons. Some places offer coupons you can take to participating vets, while others do low-cost shots and spay/neuter surgery once a month or once every two months. Call and find out what's available in your area.

i was just spayed... for about $450 when all was said and done: procedure w/ cathater & anesthetic, post-op meds, blood work and microchipping.
call your vet and talk to them about the costs of their proceedures, the options, any discounts they may give (they had given us the "Responsible Pet Owner Discount" at $100), and then see what the doctor recommends for your dog (not just what the desk clerk tells you). mine was happy to talk to my mommy about them, and broke it down piece by piece for her.
