What is the BEST IN-HOME TREATMENT for emaciation in a rescued Walker Hound? Thank you!
Danny and I found this one-year Walker on our leased property. He appears to be past his 5th day with no food (judging from the loss of body fat). While we understand "refeeding syndrome" we need to provide his treatment from home because we cannot afford our local vet's estimate of more than 1000.00
We did have him checked out by her though. He is otherwise in good health. NO Heartworm, NO major tick or flea infestation, NO SIGN of mange, NO sign of Parvo, etc.

Ah, Dieta, if you read the whole post you would have realized the guest has ALREADY taken the dog to a vet and had him checked out!!
I go along with Jack. I would start with boiled chicken and rice and offer very small meals at frequent intervals. I would also consider adding some good probiotics since one of the major problems is the lack of normal bacteria in the gut. Gradually increace the amount until you can mix in a good kibble with no problems. Good luck!!!

Well, since he's not your dog, is it possible for you to turn him into a rescue or shelter where THEY can afford to get him treated for dehydration and emaciation? It's possible he does need IV fluids, but it's hard to say for sure. That way, you could still rescue him by adopting him once he's back to a healthy state. Just a thought....
If your vet seemed to think he was in otherwise ok condition, you could just start very slowly with food and water with close monitoring. You can try boiling chicken breast (plain, no skin, no rib meat) and white rice and giving him this. It will help ease the transition back to regular food and is so bland that he will probably be able to tolerate it better than dog food at this point. BUT it's not going to put a lot of bulk back on him. It will prevent diarrhea and vomiting, which is crucial in an already dehydrated dog.
Your vet should be able to give you some advice on this, too and I'd make a follow up appt for a few days from now. Good luck!!

You should take her to the vets for HW check. yes. that is a must.
That is about 25.00 and then her shots are to be up to date that would be at the minium of 75.00
If you can not afford to get her to the vet you should take her to the nearest shelter and let them call around or see if you can find the owner.
A hunting dog travels for miles and miles. I have ran across these dogs many times.
Most likely this dog has been running for many miles and days. They will do that til they are starving. They live to hunt.
I am sure someone is looking for her.
Most of the time they do have a collar with a brass plate on it with all the info of the owners. She could of lost the collar if she is that thin, with the weight loss the collar most likely popped off on some brush. Check ALL your local newspapers and post some ads at the Farmstores. Most of them are willing to pay you for the food and vet bills. They love them they just get lost their noses get them into trouble.
