What is the best airline for transporting a 50lb dog (cargo only) in the domestic US, now that Pet Airways is gone?

Going from west coast to east coast.

Last month (Sept 2012) there were 2 more deaths (golden retriever and mastiff) -- both healthy young adult dogs -- on United Airlines.

Or is ground transport a better option?
